I asked my boyfriend if I could dress him up to look cute with me and he said yes. He fully supports my lolita stuff but doesn't know much about the fashion himself so I guess I'm just buying stuff to have him wear on my own.
What do you gulls' boyfriends wear to look good with you and where do they get their clothes? It doesn't have to be OTT or anything and I mostly wear black so the colors don't have to be crazy. He has small/average waist/hips but broad shoulders.
I didn't know if certain shops had nice men's clothes or I'd be better off looking at vintage second hand stuff.

I managed recently to pick up a set from BTSSB's outlet page of vest, pants, and shirt all in the men's size. Can anyone who owns MM's madeleine chiffon OP tell me if the measurements on lolibrary are accurate?
I really want to buy it but it says it's an 85cm bust and 66cm waist and I have an 89cm bust and 68cm waist. It has shirring, so I'm hoping that it maybe goes bigger than the listed measurements.

Wouldn't it depend on what dress it is, though? Like, specific versions of Iron Gate, Puppet Circus and Cats Tea Party hit the $1k mark regularly enough, so there's certainly folks for whom dropping $1,100 on the dress alone seems entirely reasonable.

And then there's everyone else and me in this thread, I just picked up Toy Drops set for $150-ish, now hunting for the jelly animals to go with it. If I can find them within the month I'd ship them all at once, so I think I would have spent maybe $300 total for an entire set that I really wanted but was too broke to buy when it came out.

Highst I have spent is around $400 for AP's Sugary Carnival set (sans jewellery and pony bag), but that was a fairly popular print that I know isn't going to come much cheaper at the time that I bought it. I don't really see the point of paying above the market price just because it's a dream dress, at the same time, if you want that dress badly enough and $700 is the normal market price for it, you're either going to have to suck it up and pay it, or resign yourself to only admiring from afar.

I'm not a lolita, but as a ballet dancer with experience with tutus, I am amazed by your pettis.
How do you sit? Do you just sit on them like a normal skirt? Wouldn't that deflate them? With stiff tutus, sitting on anything other than an open backed stool is a big no-no.
How long do they last? Do you hang them upside down the way I was taught to with tutus? So many questions about something no one's supposed to see.

>Do you just sit on them like a normal skirt?
Not exactly, if they bunch up it's uncomfortable
>Wouldn't that deflate them?
If you just sorta fluff them when you get back up, they pop right back to normal. They aren't really stiff, a lot more free-flowing.
>How long do they last?
Depends on the brand and a bunch of other stuff. I have one from malco modes, and I got it almost a year ago.
>Do you hang them upside down the way I was taught to with tutus? I do. Some people just stick them in a bag.

The majority of petticoats are not stiff like tutus - the volume is created by the layers rather than the stiffness. This means that they generally fluff up easily after being sat on. I tend to spread my petticoat out so that the bunching is pushed more to the side when I sit, which means that I'm not sitting inside a cloud of floof.

Okay so earlier this week i ordered a petti from a newish indie brand. It arrived today, and it's actually mouldy?? I am pretty mad about it since i just spent $60 on this "brand new" petti thats mould stained and smells like mildew. It's mainly the waistband but it's very noticeable. I don't want to cause any trouble since the owner is in my comm but i'm not sure what to do.. I don't even know how this could have happened, since it only took a day to get to me,i highly doubt it was from being in transit, and how did she not notice before sending it off? Like >>7909438 said, they aren't made of stiff tulle like tutus are. Most lolita petticoats are made of materials which are not nearly as stiff and deformable. Here are some good examples of lolita pettis: http://www.malcomodes.biz/petticoats-petticoats-Jennifer-p/582.htm http://www.qutieland.com/product.php?id=677

I usually have to adjust them a bit when I sit down, but it doesn't really hurt them too much to directly sit on them. I think a good quality petti lasts a pretty long time (at least a year or two), but I can't say for sure. Some people hang them upside down, some people just scrunch them up and put them in a drawer, it varies. Hope that answers your questions!

I'm also in college, and I wear it to class sometimes (at least 1-3 times a month). I'm a design major and most of my classes get kind of messy, so I don't wear it too often for fear of ruining my clothes.... I really wish I could wear it more often, but we work with wood, metal, paint, glue, etc., and it's tough to work in the materials shop with a blowtorch or a bandsaw while worrying about my clothes getting caught in something or getting ruined. I've never had anyone give me trouble for wearing it or treat me differently, but there are several lolitas in my area who went to the same school I'm going to and wore it to class often, so it's something that most of the faculty and staff have seen before. Being in a creative major also helps, though, since people are used to strangely dressed people. I don't look like an autist IMO, but having social skills and not going OTT or wearing a shit ton of sweet to class helps with that. I usually wear classic or a classic/sweet hybrid, but I keep it pretty toned down and casual. I wear a less poofy petti, too.

Do what you want, anon! College isn't a bad time to wear lolita, but make sure you're comfortable in your clothes and confident about it. If you're super self-conscious, awkward, and wearing uncomfortable shoes or whatever, you're gonna have a bad time and feel like an autist at school no matter what. Chin up! But if you feel uncomfortable at school, just wear it on the weekends. Or if you have lolita friends, go out somewhere with them and dress up for it!

Admittedly the poof it has at the moment is less than its original poof. I haven't done anything to bring it back to original poof in 3 years or more. but the beauty is that there's use for even a smaller petti. As I've gotten older I don't like the bigger amounts of poof, my style has matured etc so that requires an a smaller petticoat.

I usually store it upside down. I even stored it under a mattress for a while to purposely flatten it down at some point lol

For dresses like this I wear a thick belt over the seam at the under bust. That pulls in a definite small spot from which your poof can begin. Depending on the dress I often also tuck the petticoat into this spot so the poof comes from the empire line and there is no "sack" effect.

I disagree about stiff crinoline being the only thing you want to look for in a petti. I find that if the stiffer fabrics are unlined I get a lot of irritation/rash from the fabric rubbing if I decide to wear bloomers + utk socks as opposed to tights, and they can really destroy nice tights as well. Softer ones also give a different shape/feel to the poof and imo if distributed right are less lumpy under lightweight and unlined dresses.

I have 10 main pieces now that I'm really happy with, so my wardrobe is slowly balancing out, and I only have 1-2 things to sell left. At one point, I basically cut my main pieces in half, it can be scary, but looking at what I have now, it was so worth it, because it's easier to mix and match, and I'm in love with everything I have. It wasn't planned at all and definitely gradual.

I went from Gothic -> sweet lolita in black -> sweet-classic and I've been stuck at sweet classic for 5 years maybe a bit more?

There was a period of time before I switched over to sweet classic that I was in to sweet in other colors that wheren't black. But I had no money to buy it, and didn't want to sell what I had to get it. Then I bought some some AP and IW florals. And realized I just wanted more if that, and sold all my sweet prints in black.

This makes it sound like it happened over night. It took like two years between getting my first sweet-classic dress and selling my sweet lolita in black for more.

Honestly it's common to be able to appreciate other styles other than your own. And the changing of styles is to be expected as you get older. The transition will happen gradually and naturally. One day you'll just like something new enough to drop the old, don't over think it.

Also it's A-ok to be in to more than just one thing. I have some very sweet none printed pieces in my closet. It's cool.

I think my wardrobe at the moment is pretty cohesive both in color and style (pic related) by sweet classic I don't mean sweet AND classic but that fun place between sweet and classic. Think BABY florals or sweet lolita brands florals. lots of florals. Definitely not classic as in VM/JetJ classic. More like IW. Damn near all my shoes and accessories can be coordinated with any dress. For the none print sweeter dresses I mentioned I usually coordinate them with more classic shoes, and accessories so it ends up being the same general style as my wardrobe once coordinated. But they can also be coordinated in a simple typical sweet way which wouldn't exactly be immensely different from my usual style. I never go OTT sweet or anything.

When I still had my sweet lolita in black dresses I basically had two wardrobes. A coheasive wardrobe is best if you're on a budget. But having the basics down like shoes, and accessories for any given style can make it easy to have multiple styles.

Actually. I've been wearing the fashion for 10 years now. Back when I started crinoline pettis where the standard. It wasn't until bodyline and taobao popped up that people started buying the cheaper tulle kind that don't last and can't be revived.

wedding petties are the best because they last longer and are hella cheap, you might need to reshape them though. Just cut layers off since it might be too big. The shorter kind might already have the right shape but you might need cut the length to fit the fashion.

In any case, crinoline petti is the way to go if you're looking for a lasting petti. "Wedding" or not. I called it "wedding" petti because they're usually found at the bridal section but they could easily not be idk honestly.

>> No.7913116

>>7913104
There's actually more than just 2 types - there's a variety of materials and ways of getting volume now.
There are the huge square dancing ones (e.g. more expensive malco modes ones) that get their volume just from the sheer amount of fabric, but are still very soft - often organza or soft tulle rather than net tulle.
There are stiff net ones that rapidly deflate because they lose stiffness as they're worn - often the cheaper ebay/bodyline ones, the ones made out of the cheap 'ballet tulle' netting.
There are those that are vaguely in-between - they are made of soft fabric, but don't have quite the same amount of volume as a really full square dancing one and thus will deflate over time (e.g. most of the classical puppets pettis, victoriangirldress, the smaller malco modes) but they can often be repoofed with starching.
There are also some that are a combo of both, often seen in square dancing brands - usually a three-layer sandwich with organza and net to try and get a 'best of both worlds' type thing.

The one that's "best" depends on what you want. Very stiff, poofy ones are often pretty average for casual levels of poof, or under softer dresses where you can see the shape of the petticoat - in those cases, the softer shape with soft tulle and organza is often more useful. If you want long-lasting poof, the big square dancing ones and the better 'bridal' ones are usually the way to go, although there is variability in quality and lasting power.

I understand theres more than two types, I just tend to dump all in the soft fluffy material that looks like it would flatten down and the crinoline type that last for ages and when it flattens can be revived categories. Admittedly I font know much about Petties outside if that, I've had the same one for 5 years now.

I wouldn't recommend the square dancing type to anyone honestly it's compleatly the wrong shape. And your last paragraph seems to be compleatly backward to my experience with petticoats. The "stiff poofy kind" can be too huge and will remain poofy for ages. I had to store mine under a mattress for years and it still was too big when I put it on. I later decided to just cut a layer off.

>>7913120
Crinoline Petties have been used for ages, there's plenty of stuff in the internet on how to bring them back.

Last time I brought mine back I bathed with it (it's said the steam helps) then I starched it, which ended up being a nightmare because it came back to it's original cupcake shape when at the time I preferred less poof.

Sorry - that last paragraph isn't clear at all! I meant to say that the stiff&poofy pettis are often too puffy for more casual dresses, and that sometimes the outline of the petticoat is visible. Square dancing petticoats are a line which is a common silhouette for classic, obviously they aren't going to be cupcake shaped.
I was recommending both the sort of petti you have - i.e. a bridal one where the stiffness is lasting, (which isn't always common for the stiff netting, especially when it is the same quality as the $1/ yard stuff from the fabric stores) as well as petticoats that rely solely on volume for their poof

You don't necessarily need to cover dresses when you store them (and drycleaning plastic + humidity is just asking for mould...) but I prefer padded/wide hangers rather than wire

Never ordered from them, but don't. They're just another shop that orders stuff from a shopping service and tacks on an even bigger fee. Their stuff is way overpriced.

...do you seriously think Malco Modes is a "cheaper tulle kind"? I'm a "veteran" lolita as well, and cheap crinoline pettis always looked like shit.

How are square dancing petticoats the wrong shape? They're A-line.

I'm actually quite petite, my measuments smaller than that girls. And you're a cunt too or some kind of moron. 3cm is off by about one thumb in each shoulder, it's not noticesable in the least, it's average size and generally preffered by most actually. And the bust, like she was asking CAN be taken in. And taking in to account say 4-5cm of layering room plus 3-4cm of wiggle room/so you can wear a push up bra if wanted that's just about 5-7 cm too big. Again, hardly "huge".

Your petticoat is not supposed to be seen. And I rather have a functional one that's "ugly" than a pretty one that sucks, will deflate in a year and you'll likely never be able to get back to it's original poof. Specially if the pretty one is so ridiculously expensive compared to the functional one. It's nothing an overskirt can't fix if it bothers you that much?

I have a crinoline petticoat that's just ONE layer and a ruffled layer at the end. Great poof, I've had it for only a year but it's still going uninflated.

Meanwhile my bodyline tulle petti of two years or so needs to be starched up every outing or it will be significantly deflated by the time I get home.

So is it safe to assume that BABY's petticoats are all crinoline? I never understood how something with so few layers was meant to provide enough poof.

Where did you see it? I tried googling the watermark and came up with nothing. I think it looks pretty cute.

Bodyline petticoats are universally acknowledged by lolitas everywhere to be rubbish except for the overpriced $100 ones though.

I'm not really impressed by the one year your crinoline has been through either, my first petticoat is from Puppet Circus way back in 2008, and while it's deflated from violent poof to medium poof, it's still at a level that's too poofy for daily wear. I would be interested to hear how well it holds up after another 4 years, though, or if you have an older petticoat that's 5 years old I'd be interested to hear about that. One year's just not long enough.

Sorry, I'm not trying to pick a fight, just saying that a year is too short to judge whether a petticoat can last.

I do acknowledge that a petticoat that can be starched would have a longer shelf life, but at the same time, I'd really rather throw money at another taobao organdy petti rather than spend time restarching my petti before every meetup.

Baby lists most of their panniers (something got lost in translation, their petticoats are all written as パニエ, pannier) as being hard tulle, not crinoline. Best I can describe the hard tulle fabric is that it feels like chicken wire netting but as a stiff fabric instead of metal. One layer provides poof by being really stiff, if you can imagine yourself wearing a chicken wire netting skirt that's pretty much the way it works.

The hard tulle netting feels different from the way my crinoline feels, but I'm not an expert, so I can't promise you they're not the same, all I know is that it feels and looks different, and Baby themselves list the panniers as tulle, not crinoline. As for how long they last, they do deflate over time, but you can lay them over an open umbrella and starch them to prolong their poof life.

I mention the difference in panniers and petticoats because Baby also lists a number of "petticoats" (ペティコート), but they're basically long underskirts and provide zero poof.

I've been calling my petticoat crinoline this entire time because it's diffrent than the tulle ones I'm used to seeing, but it could well be hard tulle?

when buying crinoline petticoats on eBay for example you can see the exact same one being described as tulle in another listing. The term seems to be used interchangable at times?

crinoline is actually not really used anymore to describe the fabric or materials, but rather any stiff petticoat is called a crinoline, it's been that way for some time now(since 1900 but the term was popularized again in the 50s) crinoline isn't even made anymore because it's easier to achieve the same affect synthetically. Chances are that's what it is and why the word is there.

My best one was a handmade A-line square dancing one. 2 layers of some sort of semi-soft tulle stuff, fantastic medium A-line poof and medium cupcake when the waistband was rolled up (basically like the classical puppets a-line and bell shape, which I think of as medium poof) and stayed just like that for years. I had it for 4 years before selling it - it survived 3 lots of moving between cities, being shoved in drawers, boxes and suitcases, but it was always a bit too long for me.

>medium cupcake when the waistband was rolled up

Anon, I implore you not to roll up the waistband and rather put an extra small cupcake shaped petti underneath. I used to do this and while affective it's not good in the long run. It not only stretches the waistband out but can put kinks in the tulle which will look weird later on.

Given that this is all past tense, it's really not going to change anything now. Since it was soft tulle and the waistband was thin 1/4" elastic that wasn't particularly tight anyway it really never affected it...

When someone includes their domestic shipping in a price but then says you need to ask them for a quote for international do they then add that to the listed price or take away from what they would spend on the domestic shipping then add the international?
