Thinking of doing something crazy and horrifying for Halloween.

It involves one of those kigurumi masks.

Anyone had any experience? Any way to make one affordable that looks decent? Maybe just a fabric mask over a plain one?

This plain reflective mask seems to be a good idea to put under it, unless I somehow sculpt a solid animu mask with plastic.

Kinda horrified to even try these things. Worried some people take it too serious. Haven't really crossplayed before. Dunno if I wanna spend all this effort for a joke costume, but I got a con to go to just before Halloween and this idea I can't get outta my head.

Because they are kigurumi masks. Kigurumi is the japanese name for people in mascot costumes.

They are extremely expensive and hard to make. Unless you are really skilled at sculpting and using FRP, you have no chance of making anything that looks decent within a month. If you are just aiming for creepy, I am a fan of just using a black or white zentai suit to go along with whatever character you are cosplaying to give a faceless look. It is a similar concept, but without all the hard work/money.

There is some Taobao shop that sells quality ones but they are still not cheap.

I guarantee if you wear that for Halloween you will scare the piss out of people. I'm used to seeing them at cons and they STILL freak me the fuck out.
But yeah, really expensive if you just want it for a Halloween prank. If you're looking to wear this to a con as well and maybe pick up this kind of cosplaying as a hobby...it's probably worth it?

One of these cosplayers (one in the pic) walked by me at anime north.

"She" was one of the tallest and most frightening things there besides the 7 foot tall Ezio cosplayer.

I'd love to see whoever this is do a height accurate version of Super Shredder from the second TMNT movie. If I were as tall as Kevin Nash, i'd do it in an instant. Seems like it'd take a lot of craftsmanship tho.

It only looks cute because it doesn't suffer from the issues all the kigs I've seen do - their heads (masks) are usually 1.5x the normal human size, this one looks like it belongs on a person though

The overall quality among Japanese hobbyists has risen dramatically over recent years. Gaijins are still playing catch up.

shit really? and which kawaii idoru-chan told you this? Kigurumi literally means a 'plushie that you wear', none of this mask shit. there is a separate term for this which i can't remember at the moment but it has absolutely shit all to do with kigurumi.

Are you trying to troll or are you just stupid?

Kigurumi is the term for mascot costume, subsets of this being animegao and fursuits as well.

The average japanese kig mask doesn't look any different tho, the good ones are usually by makers who have been into it since over a decade.

are kigurumi masks really that hard to design? they have anime features, so they shouldn't be that complicated (not saying that they are easy to make, but I'm pretty sure you could master it in way less than 10 years)

Maybe you should go tell all these kigurumi hobbyists that they are in fact not actually doing kigurumi.
