Oh we're shooting out Doc Scratch cosplays? Here take my folder I have literally so many of them. There's this one guy in my state that use to go to conventions all the time as Doc Scratch but he got into some drama and I haven't seen or heard from him since. He used an acrylic light fixture for his head.

While it's not really a pre-requisite, it helps if you're pretty when trying to cosplay characters. Unless they're supposed to look ugly, but even then you have to look a specific kind of ugly, if that makes sense.

with Homestuck cosplay you have a lot of options if you're not conventionally attractive, you could cosplay Doc Scratch or WV. A lot of the designs are forgiving because of the use of morphsuits.
I wouldn't get pissy if others get more attention than you, though. Usually the more conventionally attractive people get more attention. Not always, though regdichab/rat john has a lot of followers and they're ugly as sin.

i really don't see anything original though. the off-the-shoulder look is pretty common and i've seen the belt and pink skirt multiple times as well. i do like that she worked in pink to the outfit, i am a fan of working in a pop of the associated color, but like i said, there really is nothing original about this. her wig is pretty bad, too. she isn't one of the worst roxy cosplayers i've seen, but she isn't the best and definitely isn't worth posting almost every thread.

idk, personally i'd rather not see hairy legs on any cosplayer, it being masculine or not. it just doesn't look good.

the only noticable makeup is the eyebrows which, yes, are shaped very feminine, but i think properly colored eyebrows look better than too-light or too-thin eyebrows. they match the wig. and i think they're supposed to be 13-year-old john anyways, so i don't see a point in griping they don't look manly. i think if they did more a little more naturally-shaped eyebrows the makeup would be perfectly fine.

they have a lot of problems tbh but the eyebrows and shaved legs really aren't the biggest ones.

Thanks to the pause, kids have had time to read and catch up, and cosplay and get into it. The other day I saw a girl who looked about thirteen or fourteen and she had a hero of Mind sweater. Back when I got into it, most people I knew were my age (I was seventeen then, I'm nineteen now). i'm not saying they're immune to critisim. i'm saying the makeup and shaved legs is the least of their problems, considering they're in an incorrect shirt and terrible wig.

like i said before, a lot of guys shave their legs for cosplay so i don't see how that is such a big deal. and even if they didn't, someone would probably gripe that they didn't. their legs wouldn't be hairy in a masculine way anyways. it would be thin hair to the knees that might not even be that visible.

contouring would be nice, but considering they're trying to look like a child, i personally don't find it that necessary in this particular case. honestly just fixing the eyebrows might be enough. they're not trying to pass as a man, they're trying to pass as a barely-teenaged boy. just being a little more androgynous would be better than being overly masculine imo.

There's a lot of gaping at the bust -- the cups should fit flat against the chest -- and she's got backskin bubbling out where it's too tight in the back.

It's hard to tell with her hand on her hip, but the overall shape isn't doing much for her figure... it looks like the waist isn't fitted where her natural waist actually is.

To get this thread going, why don't we talk wigs. What do you think is the definite line for canon-uncanon. Do you think some hairstyles work better as realistic or cartoony? I for one use hairmaps for my wigs and try to keep it very canon. What irks me most about high-tier cosplayers is the lack of canon wigs.

I really like Krazorspoon and I draw a lot of ideas from their wigs, like their Equius and Karkat. Pic related, their Karkat cosplay. Ignore the shitty shoop and headband, I think this is one of their older cosplays. (a quick google search can give you a good idea)

No, I'm serious. Real hair wouldn't look like that. I prefer when HS cosplays take the stylization out of it and translate that to something more realistic. That doesn't mean I want it to be a shapeless flat wig, mind you; it just means I'd like something less obviously...fake, I guess is the word. A more natural but still styled approach.

If you have an anime character with some weird or simple hairstyle you're going to recreate this hairstyle. Why is Homestuck suddenly exempt? This is the problem with homestuck cosplayers. This wig is clean and well done. I'm just floored it isn't fucking enough for you.

Other source materials, be they video games or manga or anime or what have you, usually offer much better depictions and references of their characters. Eren Jaeger is supposed to look the way the anime shows him, for example. Jake English, on the other hand, is not actually a paper white boy with no arms (or, since panels show him with arms, a paper white boy whose eyes are on top of his glasses). You can't compare the two. Homestuck encourages interpretation away from how the sprites are drawn because you aren't meant to strictly adhere to them as the way the characters actually look. They're a guideline. A very strong guideline, but a guideline nevertheless. Replicating them 100% looks bad.

Some wigs look best styled exactly as to how they're depicted: Super Saiyan wigs, Phoenix Wright's hair, One Piece characters with crazy hairdos. Other wigs do not. Every Nui who's attempted canon drill curls looks like shit, and if a cosplayer tries to recreate every single stringy bang piece Izaya has in the DRRR!! anime, that's going to look bad too. It's..... not? There are some exceptions where people expect cosplayers to have hard as a rock, super cartoony spiked hair (DBZ, Kingdom Hearts). IMO that usually happens when the hair is huge or the cosplay is over the top. You usually don't see shorter spiked hairstyles parted clean to the wig base like >>7822827 because it looks stupid.

Make the shirt out of black fleece so it's blockier? Do what borderlands cosplayers do and make the pants look cel shaded? Make the garments so the proportions look less like real clothes and resemble the sprites more (big pant cuffs, etc). Striped horns instead of gradient.

The problem is people wear retail shirts with paint and gray jeans from the store and then the wig looks completely out of place.

IMO this is the tipping edge before the cartoony spikes start to look weird. There's only a few of them and even the ones sticking up look wispy and natural. I like it, although I'd want to see what this looks like with a finished cosplay.

Those contacts are the same solid orange black limbal ring lenses most Dirks default to, with some shoop added in to make them more vibrant. Their glasses look like they're made out of cardboard and their brows are really strangely shaped. We had a comparison pic last thread of Dirk cosplayers with much better wigs and better overall execution. Tumblr seized onto this cosplayer as "TEH ULTIMATE DIRK" for some reason though and I've never figured out why.
