So how do y'all feel about using real fur or animal parts as part of a costume. I am in need of a horse skull for part of a helmet, and am considering using a real one.

Thoughts?

totally metal, do it \m/

I mean if it's already dead then you aren't harming anything. People use leather in their cosplay. Same type of thing in my book.

Basically this. So long as you don't go out and kill a horse for the sake of cosplay, there's no issue.

>> No.7808043

If it's just for a costume, it kind of feels wasteful.

>>7808043
yeah. that horse skull has sooo many other uses it could be used for. totally wasteful

>> No.7808069

>>7808043
don't know how it's any more wasteful then having it for display in a home

Fucking go for it. I used deer bones i pulled from a rotting carcass for my Shadow of the colossus cosplay. I posted it up on the acen fan page and one chick freaked the fuck out about it. Mentioned how it was disgusting and how dare i do that. Even had to go to the lengths of explaining that the deer was already dead. I'm recycling. Also, it was a great learning experience. Just because someone else doesn't feel comfortable using real bones/fur doesn't mean you can't do it. Although i wanted to smack my husband because he was wondering how the deer died. Told me "I wonder if it was chronic wasting disease".

I think the only concern I would have is would it not be quite heavy to wear on your head for long periods of time? Also how strong are the skulls? Don't want it breaking on you.

>> No.7808517

People are retarded. Animals and humans die everyday. I don't think it's 'heartless' to use dead animal parts for a costume. What about your meals then? All those chicken and potato roots died for you! And your clothes on you - how many trees were killed to make room for a polyester factory? Ahhh the horror!

Do it anon.

>> No.7808530

It's expensive unless you find a dead horse. If you find a dead horse it's a pain in the ass to treat a skull to be useful (aka, not smelly and full of larva)

Also, it's heavy.

I'd say it's absolutely impractical for everything except studying anatomy.

Also, forget about cutting, sanding or making holes on it, skulls are hard

>what is bone carving

It's difficult, but there are plenty of things you can do to shape bone.

>> No.7808584

I definitely had a few people freak out when I used real fur for my bother's Jon Snow cape. I didn't really care, though. It looks fabulous and I'll do it again for my Sansa cape.

>> No.7808587

As long as you use vintage fur or the animal is already dead, I don't care. It's not worse than eating meat in my book, and anyone who claims otherwise is probably a hypocrite.

>> No.7808590

>>7808551
think acid washing it would work?

>> No.7808592

As long as you didn't kill it for the sake of cosplay, sure, go for it.

Might get some shit from people but who cares, it was already dead.

>> No.7808611

If it's too heavy you can always make a cast of it and use a lighter material or make it thinner than the original, like resin.

>> No.7808616

If you just found the horse skull or something, it's fine, just don't kill a real one. It's more effort than it's worth.

Also make sure you clean it properly. You don't want bacteria on your face/head.

This is probably best idea. I find a pig skull heavy already, let alone a horse.

They were cleaned. I repainted them to look dirty. I posted the clean photo up on acen so they were stark white. Sorry I should have clarified. That photo was after painting them. This was after cleaning.

Those are supposed to be bone tips for his arrows. Not random deer ribs just cause he wanted to wear them.
You need to bleach them. They look really gross and I wouldnt want to touch it.

Shrug, there's a reason we're the dominating species. Anyone who would bitch about it wouldn't do it to your face.

Vet here again.

My friend used to collect skulls (she has all domestic species) and she treated them. Her technique was to leave them in bleach for a couple of weeks, then leave them to dry under the sun for another few weeks (so bugs eat the brain and the remaining skin and muscle) then bleach it again.

It worked more or less, some of her skulls still had bugs inside them when I used them to study for my exam

Incoming terrible photoshop. What i started out with is in the bucket, then i cleaned them, then repainted to look dirty. Also there was a huge online consensus that his dangly bits were bones so thought it would be neat to use bones instead of just dowels. I felt it would add something considering what the character would be around/have access too. It was actually a really fun experience and i'd totally do this again if i needed.
