I watched the full video of one they had in 2012 out of sheer morbid curiosity and some of it was fucking cringeworthy. This has been bugging me since they posted it, but who does Eirtakon think they're kidding by advertising a contest to redesign their ugly mascot? They're too cheap to pay the wage of a designer who can actually make them a logo that presents an air of both fun AND professionalism, so they're willing scam the con-going public into designing something they'll likely be using for years for no pay whatsoever? Super disappointing.
At the very least no self-respecting artists will apply and they'll be stuck with noob art that looks worse than their current one.

Back from Glasgow Comic Con lads, was good craic. Funnily enough since we're on the discussion of Persona cosplays, a group of 3 of us did P3 cosplays as Shinji, Akihiko and MC. We met another pair of Akihiko and MC along with a really fucking cheerful Junpei, great guy.

Much better than last year, a lot more space and some really creative cosplay. I spent £30 on these two, nothing else really caught my eye. There was a stall with an amazing selection of rare PS2 games but they were going for £30 a piece in some cases so I left it. Courtenay Taylor and D.C. Douglas held a panel too and it was good craic, except for every second question in the Q&A being about fucking Mass Effect.

I'm looking forward to Eirtakon more though since Comic Con is essentially just a giant trading hall with a lot more Western influence thrown in.

I know who that is. That's the spanner who made an 'Obscure Anime' panel for Akumakon a few years back. First billing on the Obscure Anime front was given to Cowboy Bebop.

Three people shot themselves before the panel ended, and I left the con because of it.

He moaned at Eirtakon because they wouldn't give him a panel at all. And he hast been rightly shunned by the community.

This is a message from the con director of Otaku Con.
We have members of our staff who ran other cons/currently run other cons so we know what were doing.
We make money,break even or lose money it's just a project for us to keep our heads down

The video game tournaments haven't been updated.
We have dedicated a whole floor to video games.

Geek eire isn't out PR.
He volunteered for 2 days and had to be asked to leave for trouble making.
They have no involvement besides a panel.
I'm the PR of the con.

We are aware we make posts too often and will be lessening it dramatically.You can always click unlike and check updates on the website if your interested in going.

At the end of the day it's a bit of fun for us to organise something like that.

We are aware of how many other conventions there are in Ireland.
We were inspired by most of these conventions.When you have the motivation,drive and passion to do something do you say to yourself "I shouldn't do it there's too many people doing this".
No you say to yourself. "I'm gonna do this and give it the best shit I have".
What if the great people who inspire you life said "I'm not gonna do this it's been done before"
We wouldn't have all these great things in life!
I think Will Smith once said something along the lines of "people may be stronger than me but if they get in a thread mill and challenge me I will win every time because I'll run til I die because I'll do whatever it takes to succeed."
I will do whatever takes to make Otaku Con succeed.Its a family,community and so much more to a lot of people involved.

You may say "this venue was used before for other conventions"
Because most of those conventions are involved with Otaku Con.

Otakon is a convention that did inspired us.So much so we actually asked Otakons permission to use the name "Otaku Con" even tho they have a slight difference.We have a great working relationship with those guys.

If you seen our guests before,don't like our events etc then that's fine you don't have to come along.
We hope another year will catch your attention to give us a chance.

Regarding geek eire.
We can't control who he advertised in order to gain attention to his podcast but he's in now way related to Otaku Con besides his panel.

But Christ on a bike I didn't expect such a blowup. I just wondered how they could afford so many guests and events on a E20 entry ticket.

It just seemed to me that it was a risky way to run a Convention that could bite them in the ass, and didn't bode well for the main event. It's too ambitious for year 1....

It could also bite other conventions too, if question marks get asked about Irish cons being a bit overambitious, or not paying guests, start getting around. There's also a noted problem in the US of some First-Year cons trying to go big early and blowing their budget, or coming up massively short on the attendance they promised the hotel.

If they're lucky enough to get to the thousand attendee mark, that's 20 Grand cash. On top of whatever prior funding they have. It's not actually a lot of money.

Maybe the committee members are happy to take the hit, or the college is covering the cost of the venue which'd make a little more sense. But it's still a peculiarly low price for so many events. All that stuff's expensive.

I do remember that Eirtakon used to run with those ticket price levels when it was held in the Hub with about a thousand attendees. But they only had the one guest at the time, and only recently went beyond that.

There're genuine questions left hanging about their ability to run this event and pay for it. If they actually think they can get a libel suit going over this, they only increase.

I honestly think that, for a con, they're starting far too big. They're looking to launch like Nom-con did, but I don't think that's going to happen. To use an -ew- business term, Nom-con hit a gap in the market at the time but that gap just isn't there for Otakucon to launch as big as they expect.

I'd be tempted to go just to see it crash. If we all go to see it fail, it'll accidentally be a success. Like Springtime for Otakon.... sorry, Otakucon.

Y'know. I've tried to keep things to a certain level of sanity and correctness, to keep a nose above the trolling and make a fair point and ask a fair question.

But that's almost too low-hanging to pass up. Almost. I'll leave it to someone else to take the bait.

The fact that he's saying it's registered as his business however, might be telling. It might've been possible to run at such a low price-point if the college was backing it, but if he's running it himself as his business, I have strong doubts.

And there is nothing defamatory in wondering just how a business expects to cover its operating costs. If I'm doing work on my house and a builder quotes me a suspiciously low price, I have a right to ask why, and where the corners might've be cut.

I do not want to buy a weekend pass to Otakucon and find that it's cancelled late on Saturday for unpaid venue fees, the guests have left and gotten annoyed over not having their costs covered.

This has happened before in the States. There's been a rash of over-ambitious cons. And if it happens here, it'll sour the waters amongst potential guests for other Conventions.

By buying a membership to a Convention, we're taking a stake in the event happening as advertised and if we have genuine questions about whether the event can continue as advertised it's the job of the event Director to convince us that it will, and not just offer platitudes and the equivelant of 'Ah sure trust us'. I've never trusted a politician who said that, I won't trust anyone else.

Refusing to trust a Business's word is not deformation. It's not even *defamation*. It's good sense when attending an event involves me spending money I might not have in the run up to New Years.

The fact that the Director is taking such a blusterous line warning of legal action rather than attempting to address these concerns further makes me doubt their ability to make the event happen.

Take out a loan to cover costs. Hope to make enough money to cover the loan. If it fails, the Ltd goes belly up, it's assets are sold off and he moves on.

You guys are pretty universally terrible. It's funny how you keep mentioning things I've supposedly done or ways in which I'm horrible, but when was the last time you had any specific example to latch onto that didn't involve some degree of transphobia/policing/anti-SJW bullshit?
