I'm with you, most of this thread seems to be straight up classic lolita but for newbies who haven't stepped out of their comfort zone yet I can see where non-print/toned down coordinates would be appealing because they're not as eye-catching as prints and therefore feel "safer" when worn in public.
I wish the idea of "casual lolita" would just vanish though, it's used as a blanket term to justify half-assed coordinates and going without a petti (that's not really the case in this thread, but check the archive for other "casual" threads to see what I mean).

Non-printed and toned down outfits are great for everyday life and casual outings with friends, it's basically what I wear. 'Le mieux est l'ennemie du bien'. When you have some beautiful hight quality pieces, pilling accessories on it won't obligatory make it better.

It's my favourite part of classic lolita, actually : making a stunning outfit out of nothing but simplicity. A nice op, a hat/bonnet/hair corsage, designer or vintage leather bag, quality shoes and thigh-highs and you're done. You don't need to overstyle it when you got the look.
The bad side of this is that you actually have to fit perfectly the dress and look nice (have a nice posture etc) and have some really good quality (brand or not) pieces or you'll just look basic instead of elegant.

I think you have to realize that the majority of Lolita's only wear it to "special occations" (I.E cons and meet ups.) And they usually go OTT for those.

So anything outside of that constitutes as 'casual' to them. A lolita outfit to the movies with some friends is about as 'casual' lolita as they will go since they are not daily lolitas, wearing lolita for a quick run to the shop or walking the dog is not even something they would do.

- OTT ( which I don't do often because I'm mostly lone loli but can)
- Basic/simple for everyday lyfe outings.

This is generally how I wear lolita, with minimal accessories and colors, and I think it's perfect, but I always feel like if you don't have ott vomit all over you with a matching neon wig, girls always side eye you or snub you, clearly thinking your coord is too plain.

I have been in lolita fashion for a year and a half now, but I still have bought a print dress. All of my dress are solid. I am not sure why I am only attracted to solid color dresses. I must be a boring lolita anons. Someday I will buy a print dress. Someday.

Anyway, I thought this coord was simple and cute. I think it is only 1 of 2 pictures I have seen of dreaming sherbert (one of my favorite dress.) It's a shame the dress isn't popular. I really want it in mint.

It took me wearing lolita for four years before I was brave enough to buy print dress. Honestly, I wish I could go back to wearing non-prints. Non-print coords feel so plain when I'm wearing them, but all my print coords look so shitty since I haven't figured out how to balance all the colours differently. It was a lot easier when I could do 2-3 colours in a solids-only coord.

To add: basically in my mind, a 'simple' coord has all the elements from head to toe (headwear, blouse, dress or skirt, legwear, shoes) with maybe 2 more *noticeable* additional accessories. I feel that the understatedness of the accessories is key (so for example, a necklace plus a few rings but they're very small like a simple pendant and a few small stone or charm rings, there but not obvious).

I absolutely love simple and solid-color coords where the colors or one single accessory or piece can stand out on its own. It's a blank canvas for the key item.

Fanny Rosie is hard to pin point with her coordinates sometimes. I don't find a lot of her casual wear to be lolita or otome, but more inspired by the fashion since she follows a similar silhouette and wears brand. My first dress was a print dress and I regret it. It's not versatile at all. No matter how I coord it, with blouses or boleros or different accessories or different accent colours, it looks the same because the focus is always on the print.
It's still beautiful and I like wearing it but since it's so eye-catching I can't wear it casually, only to meets. And because of the aforementioned lack of versatility I often feel like I'm wearing the same coord to every other meet and everyone must think I'm boring.

If it wasn't a gift from a loved one I'd sell the damn thing and buy two or three non-print secondhand dresses with the money.

My definition of basic generally excludes busy prints unless it's something like >>7786488 that is relatively easy to tone down. I think a DCC skirt in a colourway other than black could work in a simple coord if you let the colours kind of blend with the rest of the outfit, but a colourway like black is already way too busy and contrasting to be anything but OTT.
