Prints of Not Homestuck from the last thread.

Next project will be a Vitruvian Yaoi Man, or some similar anatomical illustration featuring huge hands, shovel chins, tiny heads, square shoulders, etc.

I'm building up a stock so I can do AA in two years maybe after selling online. I just got my stock sample booklet from Catprint today.

My first print(s). Branching out from just craft stuff. I'm thinking of keeping them as smaller prints since they're going to be pretty simple and maybe doing prism bookmarks because I think the sparkle would look neat with the art.

I noticed a lot of artists jumping on the prism thing, but it doesn't always suit their art and that's kind of disappointing.

You kind of get what you pay for with printing. Those online printing companies like Vistaprint are really cheap but the quality isn't always the best. I'm pretty sure Vistaprint uses digital printing which doesn't look as nice as litho printing. If you want the best quality, I would just go to a local print shop that does litho prints. Or not being around them. I had a table buddy once who set up, asked if I'd mind their stuff while they went to the bathroom, and then didn't come back until the end of the day. Ugh, I had to table sit for a boyfriend/girlfriend duo that were like that too. I just went with them to help out & lower the hotel room cost and they had me and another guy sit at the table for the entire first day, and then on the second I got into an argument with the boyfriend because they wouldn't even let me leave the table to go to the merchant's room to buy a book. The two of us wound up leaving after they went on a "lunch break" that lasted a few hours - A couple I was friends that were also at the con with saw them milling around the merchant's room the whole time.

I did art commissions for customers and sold more shit than they did the whole time we were there.

We never have any issues and always help out each other whenever we can [AA-wise]. It helps that she's very nice and serious about her art and selling art. Honestly, I lucked out! I don't think I would have the cojones to just start by myself, so doing it together has been really great.

I'm trying to get into the AA scene too. You might want to consider buying LD glossy inkjet sticker paper (i got mine off amazon). Rather than having to commit to a single design and buy in bulk, you can test how well something sells.

You're going to have to devote some time to cutting everything out by hand, but the stickers look nice once they're done.

sweet (Angelic Pretty, BTSSB, Metamorphose), classic (Innocent World), and gothic (Moi-même-Moitié). Like I said though, there are pieces that overlap that can be worn as a few different styles depending on the /design/motif/whatever.

Also, mori isn't related to lolita fashion, it's just another type of j-fashion.

Also I'm surprised about the backing complaints. I use felt and they're as sturdy as ever. Out of the ones I've sold I've never had any complaints, and the one I have pinned to my purse is still great.

The fact that so many anons told you it was bad and how it was bad should be a sign. Don't get defensive; let it be a lesson.

>>7767848
I think you need something to differentiate yourself. The problems with things like what you posted are that 1) a lot of people are making them (like you said); 2) several taobao shops sell them for dirt cheap now, too; and 3) they can be made by almost anyone, so more crafty sellers will just diy them.
Mossbadger does well because she has a market that few other people have moved in on (i.e. custom prints/artwork) and her quality is top notch.
I think really sweet/pastel rosettes would sell better since it's not such a saturated market, but they would probably require art and would need to be made well (i.e. better than kawaiigoods, which isn't saying that much, but still).

Sort of. I'm not really familiar with the character, but motifs like seashells and stuff are generic enough if they are integral to the character. From what I know, the text used on the original print are also his "famous last words" so I understand using that text, but the composition and the "ribbon" motif seem incongruous enough that I have a hard time seeing it as a "coincidence."

Thank you!

I don't have an online shop as of yet- just selling at local-ish cons. I have a tumblr if you'd like to follow.
This is my first time making plastic charms, so I only printed 4 so far. (First two came out like ass.)
I'll make sure to make a thicker loop on the next batch. I also want to adjust the colors some more- they came out pretty dark compared to the digital image.

Same character? Pass.
Same text? Character relevant so pass.
Seashell? Same as above. Pass.
Same decision to use a headshot of same character with same scroll banner using same text? No, this is beyond coincidence. It's pretty clearly theft. The artist should apologize and stop selling that print.

just curious how i should price these
they're an inch and a half tall and are attached to a little cell strap

i'm kind of miffed because i originally ordered these from inkitlabs on white plastic and the charms i received were really faded and sad looking.
they explained it had something to do with white ink and not using it on white plastic
long story short i ended up reordering them in clear plastic, as shown

i'm out like 200 bucks for 50 usable charms and 50 unusable charms

Charms usually go for $5.
That sucks about the first lot of charms. I'd be emailing inkitlabs about a partial refund. If they knew your design wouldn't work well on white, they should have given you a heads up before printing them all. I don't really see why it would print all faded like that anyway. White is usually the safe option. Sounds more like a printing error to me but I'm no expert.

yeah i emailed them about it and they replied that they don't use a white ink base on white plastic, but they do use white ink on the other plastics and on wood. apparently the white ink is what makes the colors really pop and also has a hand in keeping the image sharp looking.
they also said they were pleased with the "vintage" look of the first batch of charms and seemed confused that i wasn't equally pleased.

Rejects basket is a good idea. Otherwise, you definitely want to go $5+ for charms. If they're on the smaller side, $5~$7 should be good. My friends who do larger ones sell for like $8~$12 with deals for buying multiples.

I don't know if you've done this already (can't really tell from the picture) but try adding a layer of gloss, finish, or coating to the charms. A good finish can saturate the colors a little more as well as make it look more durable. In a pinch you can use Mod Podge glue, but I find that the Ceramcoat stuff that they sell at JoAnn's is a pretty solid all-purpose finish. You can also try the Sculpey glaze they usually sell in the clay section

Since there are a lot of crafty people here and not just illustrators, would anyone have advice on what I should do to make the leaf ears for some snow bunny bath bombs? I was making them from the bb mix and colorant but I like keeping the main piece in its mold while it dries, so I probably wouldn't be able to stick them on after.

>red noses on every character

There have been art pieces I almost bought at Artist Alley that I decided against because of the weird red nose trend. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be cute, or indicate the character is drunk or embarrassed or has rosacea or a sunburn or what. It confuses me so much that I just can't buy art with those weird sunburned faces, even if I love the artist's work otherwise.

If I were to commission a piece at a con from an artist who does this style, how rude would it be of me to specify no noseblush? There is no way I can think of to phrase this request that doesn't make me feel like a snotty dickhead.

I think it's supposed to be cute? Or show to show blood under the skin (my nose gets really red sometimes). They're really bad at blending it out, that's the problem. Otherwise you wouldn't notice it very much.

But I agree. Unless it's a wintertime picture or the character's nose is canonly weirdly red, leave the nose blush out.

>> No.7770467

>>7770363
honestly I think it's because they don't want to do anime style dot noses, but want to be more "realistic" without being ugly. Of course they're still unhumanly small so the unnatural red makes it look less...fittngly "unnatural".

I feel into the red nose thing for a small amount of time and that's my theory. I bet if you asked for no red nose they simply wouldn't be able to do it for they fear they'd make something ugly.

Square is alright. Like any other card reader there's a small charge for every transaction. It's all nickels and dimes but those do add up if you're selling a lot of stock for cheap prices. The reader itself is free, so is the app, but both can be a bit slow, even moreso if your con's wifi is shit.
The one thing about Square is that it deposits the money straight into your back account within one or two days and that's super helpful.

Most of my friends use some sort of corkboard or foam board, since it's easy to just pin them in. If your'e going for the long-term, get a pretty good quality corkboard (with a stand) as flimsy ones/foamboard can get beaten up after a while.

If you have a lot of different designs, you can also use those plastic jewelry organizer cases with all the individual square boxes. If you don't want the pins themselves out, you can have a catalog of designs displayed somewhere on your table.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

I'd like to use it to do personal shapes/cutting. But the last one I got did only shapes within it's database.

So I guess my question is: has anyone used this? And can I make it cut custom shapes?

I'm willing to drop the $300 if it'll save me hours of cutting.

Please do, anon! Thank you so much!

I got a pazzles inspiration and it cuts whatever you put in the program, the only bigger downside is that sometimes it goes like crazy and cuts whatever. Also you can`t use it for several cuts in a row, like you want to cut 10 sheets, my recomendation is to cut them and leave it rest for half an hour. I haven`t used sticker paper though, but it got an option for that...Now I wonder if I can do kiss cut sheets...

>> No.7778410

>>7778051
I have one of those and it works pretty well. You can cut custom shapes, and there's also a feature called "print and cut", where the software puts some marks on the paper and uses them to align the cuts. The positioning of the cuts is generally very accurate, but sometimes using the print and cut the cuts just don't align with the printed shapes. That's usually caused by some calibration issue though.

If you want to get one, I suggest you get at least one extra cutting base (the plastic thing where you attach the paper to be cut), because removing the cut pieces from the base can be quite time consuming and slow down your production if you only have one base.

I should also mention that the cutting base has a sticky side where you temporarily glue your paper, but with time and constant use the stickiness decreases. To restore the stickiness, just use spray glue.

Well it's not me personally, but my friend sells his originals of his prints at the con, and they generally sell here or there, generally ending up mostly gone by the end of the con. But with only 5-6 available at the beginning, it's not a significant amount. They go for around $50-$100 depending on their detail and complexity. A painting or copic work would probably go for a lot more, but his is the comic book work super clean black inking and hashing, and a print vs the original are pretty indistinguishable out of going up and feeling the paper.

SLCC is a bigger animal so you do get more shops selling legitimate comic/pop culture merch. Any anime merch will be unlicensed/bootleg. Hi, fujoshi anon from a few threads ago. The local con I attended for my first AA table went well. Everyone loved the husbando-OTP-orgy chibi price tiers, however, the option of keychain, cell charm, or magnet did not fly. People just wanted the ball chain and sales were so quick we weren't going to have the time to ask and then make the charm up like they wanted.

So since the con is done and I've got money to invest, I'm looking to get a personal desktop laminator for my chibi charms. For this last con I printed them on 100 lb cardstock and laminated them at my work which meant they only got ran through on .5 mm laminate. Can anyone recommend a good personal laminator that could handle .10 mm laminate? All I need it to do is charms, so it doesn't have to handle bigger than letter size, if that. Sure, I don't disagree with that - there's nothing wrong with fanart inherently. But no one's entitled to make money from it. If the company didn't initially put their money into marketing the shit out of their intellectual property none of us would give a fuck about it.\

I don't have a problem with fanart, nor do I have a problem with people who sell fanart. It's the fuckers who think they have a right to it that annoy me.

I make realistic mini-sweets(pic related) and I also do moe-uguu food related drawings and the like, but I am wondering what sort of sweets people would like to see more of. I like this! I think it would look better though if the dough parts were more "flakey" looking and maybe had sugar crystals. Reminds me of when chocomint had these necklaces on tiny gold plates. As long as it's cute and not too pricey, I think you will stand a chance.

On the other hand I want to see some cute burgers. A while back someone on LJ would make "bear burgers" (the top bun has bear ears and a face) and I am regretting now not buying one.

you could use the "it boils down to" sentiment for a lot of things where you compare two fundamentally different or at least morally different things that have similar themes. Killing an infant a few hours after it was born boils down to a late term abortion so it's basically the same thing amirite?

Plus a lot of large companies are pretty complicit when it comes to fanartists, if not outright supportive of them, even when they sell their work. It's considered good publicity for their property. On the other hand someone who just prints out stuff and resells it is simply stealing, without bringing anything new to the table.

I like that Angelic Pretty print. I'm going to make some replica dresses but add a few more stars to the print. The dress should make me some big bucks when I sell it without giving any credit to AP! (You all bitch about replicas around here, it is the same thing)

See how stupid you sound?

If a company is fine with it, go right ahead. But I would bet most people don't ask permission and the Etsy thing shows that not all companies are okay with people making a profit off of their characters

Surprised no one's answered this yet. AAs were generally harder to get into in LA even five to ten years back - it's gotten worse lately because art school students now attend them as well and LA has a fairly high concentration of art schools.

The best thing to do if you're serious about doing AAs is add yourself to mailing lists, stalk twitters and facebooks and get added to waiting lists if they're still available for cons that are full. AX let in a bunch of people through its waiting list this year and I wouldn't be surprised if they do it again for next year.

>> No.7804810

>>7804789
But fanartists are marketing prints, not bootleg copies of the show/game/whatever with a few sparkles and fake deleted scenes thrown in.

It's more like... someone wearing an Angelic Pretty dress in a staged scene of their own creation, having professional photos taken, and selling prints of the photo. The dress in the print is a draw, but the artistry of the staged scene/professionalism of the photos/beauty of the model are the majority motivating factors behind sales. The fanart that sells really well is stuff that looks amazing - and would look amazing regardless of the characters featured. Obviously yes, the fandom featured is a big draw, but most people make the effort to actually make the prints a lot more than just a picture of an anime character.

>> No.7804813

Not really. Since when do those things constitute bringing new things to the table? Coey just rehashed someone else's specific image. I would find a redraw of an official image to be similarly lazy/skeezy unless there was some sort of clear re-imagining that made it significant in some other way.

Both companies have billions of dollars in revenue, they don't particularly care about what the fans make unless it's offensive or mass-produced and obviously enough to make a good profit. The money people make online and at conventions with fan art is chump change in comparison.

In this argument, I totally agree with you. Though I feel like most companies could be handling this situation way better and are missing out on both new/innovative products involving their characters and the respective licensing moolah.
It is nearly impossible to get a hold of licensing information/request to license a character from American companies. It would be better for everyone if they had more accessible licensing departments, or if they don't want to deal with us pleb artists that often they can do what the Japanese companies do for wonderfestival. They sell licenses that allow the sale of a garage kit based on their character limited to the convention. That's why it's such a bitch to get a hold of those things overseas/after the event but hey they give them a chance.
They don't have to give it out to everyone either they could have some way of if you submit the prototype design/product etc. we might let you license it etc.

The companies are just handling this like all old things that refuse to change with the times and recognize the little guy.

Ah. I see.
I'll have to see how lucky I get with the wait lists. I feel like that would be easier than finding somebody willing to split a table with a stranger. Heck, I would even pay for the whole table for them. Just feels like artists usually stick to sharing with peeps that they know well.

That's nice that you got an AX table this year. How come you weren't able to get a table for next years?
I was hoping I could possibly get one, but was crushed to find out that only artists who had a table this year could buy one for next year. It really does make sense and is fair.
I once was invited to table at a small event and I had to pay $150 to to do so. I only ended up making $40-$45. Left a bad taste in my mouth that I really don't want to risk doing small events or faraway cons. It did leave a craving for tabling at cons in my area.
