As for why people hate her? After all these years of hearing horror stories but being a big fan of her work, I decided to go to a meet & greet at a con a couple months ago. I bought two prints at her table to get signed. I told her the usual that everyone says. I'm so excited to meet you, you're my idol (for fashion AND costume design) and she started asking me questions about what I do and make as far as fashion and/or costumes. She asked to see pictures. She actually took her time looking through pictures on my phone and complimenting them and certain techniques I did with them. Even asked for a business card from me. Even though she had a line and I didn't ask or suggest her to feel obligated to show any interest in what I do, she really made me feel like she cared about her fans. Other people in line were extremely pleased with her too, she didn't even care if you bought a print from her, she gave a genuine smile to people who stood in line with just their badge to get autographed. ....

So later that day, I went into her last panel for the weekend (I unfortunately missed the others). It was just a generic Q&A with Yaya. Anything from recommendations, personal questions(She actually shared some pretty humbling information about herself), getting famous for cosplay, Yaya's views on cosplay, etc. She would somehow speed through very stupid over asked questions, but she took a lot of questions over about an hour or hour and a half. I actually decided to put my hand up even though there was a sea of hands and I was pretty far back in the room. She pointed in my direction and goes "I think I see Brian(My real first name), the fashion designer?", and it seriously made my day out of the hundreds/thousands people she's met over that long weekend, she remembered me. I asked her a question about sewing skill vs prop and armor making (to get noticed or be 'successful'), and she gave a really good answer about playing to my strengths but learning new techniques to be well rounded and successful. After the panel she even mingled with people for about 15 minutes of people just around her and she was talking casually with cosplayers and saying how much she loved other's costumes. Honestly, she may have had a rough past, or maybe people catch her on a bad day with a stressful con schedule or misinterpret her. But my experience with her was great. She seems really grateful to her friends and really seems to have a passion for the art of cosplay and not just fame, and for that, I don't regret buying prints and her new calendar(dat first 300 preorder Ashe print) to support an idol.

I actually just feel really, really bad for this woman at this point. She's getting older and it's impressive that her modelling career has lasted this long, but she's defeating herself.

Most of us have other life aspirations or jobs to fall back on, and it seems like she's hanging onto cosplay for dear life either because she won't or can't fall back onto some sort of day job or secondary source of income. All she does with her life is cosplay and if she doesn't try to push some sort of brand or cult of personality then she's not got much else.

And with her rather well-documented attitude problems, she's pushing people and resources away and I'm going to guess that fewer people will want to work with her.

This really is what it boils down to. She's an annoyance in a hobby I enjoy but she's hardly some genocidal maniac or inoperable cancer. When you put things in perspective when I'm not posting on /cgl/ or at a con the shit she's done never crosses my mind. Hell her name rarely crosses my mind anywhere else, and I'm very active in cosplay.

She's gotten her fans through some means that deserve to be criticized, but she still got those fans. I work in sales, I pay my bills, afford my cosplays, and other shit sometimes by doing things that others would criticize. I have no idea what the costs of living are where she lives, but even considering how many cons she goes to invite her to go there, she still must have some considerable expenses due to travel considerations - not to mention making her costumes (or commissioning them if you want to buy into that conspiracy theory). She had her attorney serve a friend of mine a cease and desist letter to my friend via her facebook fan page, that she didn’t even start! About cat ears. The letter was ridiculous, her ‘attorney’ is the boyfriend of one of her HoC friends, and my friend hired an attorney to write back in regards to it, sent the letter NOT through facebook, and they laughed at Yaya trying to claim right on all sculpted cat ears, since they only come in 1 shape…cat ears, and that Yaya was trying to monopolize all sculpted cat ears. Her attorney never replied back except to say he lost the letter, and will reply later…and never did.
