Make up thread? I checked the catalog and didn't see one (unless I'm blind)

I wanted to discuss buying makeup online in particular. I feel like it is a bit harder since it's hard to compare shades without physically being there.

I've been browsing aliexpress and some knock off palettes of popular brand (Naked, Two Faced) etc. and I was wondering if anyone had any good experiences/suggestions?

>> No.7751247

exactly this. the pallets are not that expensive in all honesty. I have all the naked pallets and they are perfect and totally worth shelling out money on it.

Never ever buy makeup from china. There are plenty of asian brands if you are into that but don't buy a knock off just for the sake of saving some money.

My GO TO makeup shit

For eyeshadow make sure you invest in a good primer too. I have the Urban Decay Primer Potion and it's just the god damn best thing to stop my shadow from creasing.

The NYX milk pencil is also really good to have colors show up boldly if you need them to. In general for drugstore products I really like NYX. the butter lipstick and glosses are really great. The glosses are never that goopy sticky shit. Love the face setting spray as well.

I have yet to find a liquid liner I liked. Closest has been MACs fluidline. But you need to have a pretty steady hand to get really good results. But it's not chalky and it is not shiny.

I have the costal scents 252 pallet which isnt bad. the intense pink/red/purples have stained my eyelids pink after use. Usually goes away within a day but it is kind of annoying.

And for makeup removers I always use the neutrogena oil free makeup remover. That shit is incredible.

All you people are stupid and don't read the labels and packaging before buying ANYTHING.

Makeup is mostly made in China nowadays. Even Japanese brands like kate/shiseido outsource production to China. You just read the fucking label and it says MADE IN CHINA. Buying from a Japanese webshop does not guarantee it's not made in China.

For the record I bought two mentholatum lip balms; one was made in China because I was stupid and I assumed that all Japanese brands were safe. It made my lips itch and dry, I thought I bought an expired product so I checked the label and it was MIC lel. Doubled back to watsons and bought another mentholatum lip balm that said made in Japan, it kept my lips hydrated and I loved it

So keep your eyes peeled.

>> No.7753360

>>7753331
And by "basic colors" do you mean neutrals or do you want all the colors of the rainbow? Getting a good quality completely matte eyeshadow palette for a little money is going to be hard, most eyeshadows have at least a *little* shimmer, because matte eyeshadows easily get very chalky and shitty. I'm going to assume you don't want "glitterbomb" and proceed with my recommendations.

I stand by Naked as being the best value for your money if you want neutrals. It's about $48 USD but the quality is great and it lasts a long time. It's very versatile and I love mine. If you want cool tones, Naked 2 is for you. I have Naked 3 also and that's full of rosy tones and I love it.

The Lorac Pro palette (the first one) is fucking excellent, it has half matte half shimmer shades and is therefore even more versatile than Naked. I think this one is about $50? It has a good mix of warm/cool tones whereas Naked (the first one) is mostly warm.

NYX "Nude on Nude" is a palette that is supposed to resemble Naked, I don't own it personally but I heard people are satisfied with it, it has an array of nude colors and then some lip colors, it's $25 I think.

If you really don't have any eyeshadows and you don't like my suggestions, I recommend going on the sephora site and browsing to see if you find a palette whose color selection you like. At that point start googling the reviews of those palettes to see swatches and to make sure the quality isn't shit.

Also generally stay away from eyeshadow palettes from Revlon/l'oreal/maybelline, they are hit/miss with the quality but mostly "miss", and you would be better off putting your money into something good.

>> No.7753374

>>7753360
Thank you for the suggestions! Are all of those neutrals? I was hoping to find a good neutral one and a rainbow. I think Naked would be the way to go for neutrals, so thank you for that suggestion. Is there also and easy way to find out if your cool or warm toned?

>>7753374
Yes, all these palettes are neutrals. If you want rainbow colors I would suggest first figuring out which colors look best on you. At the start of my makeup obsession I bought a lot of green shadows (because my eyes were hazel) and unfortunately discovered green looks like shit on me. So first determine which colors look best on you. You can do this by finding your skin tone:
http://www.wikihow.com/Determine-Skin-Tone

Then try to determine which colors would go with your eyes (image related). Looking at those pre-made Sephora palettes ("specifically for hazel/blue/whatever eyes") should also give you an idea.

As for colored shadow palettes, I don't wear bright colors but Sugarpill is beloved by many, they have like 3 eyeshadow quad palettes. The Urban Decay Electric Palette is getting good reviews and seems pigmented as hell. Also Kat Von D sells shadow palettes that are nice at Sephora (also manufactured by the Sephora brand). Do not buy from Limecrime as it is scammy and shitty.

Oh and one last note, the rules of makeup in regards to tones/complementary colors aren't hard and fast, but they're good guidelines if you're just starting out. For example, cool purple shadow might make my eyes pop (because I am cool toned), but I actually prefer warm rosy-pink-purple tones because the warmth of the shadow balances out the cool of my complexion. I'm sorry if I'm making this more complicated, I'm here if you have any more questions.

As far as contouring, with pale skin, it's very important not to overdo it and to also know your skin's undertone. You want to pick a product that has similar undertones and not just a bronzer or something. I use a mineral foundation that's a couple shades darker than my skin for contouring and blend it well.

As a total beginner (ie. someone who only wears mascara and basic foundation/powder) I've picked up a lot of tips in this thread. I hate sitting through videos but I guess that's what I'll have to do to learn better.

I was wondering, is it normal that when you first start trying to wear more makeup you think you look awful? I've got relatively pale and clear skin and a very round face, and whenever I try to wear more than just brown mascara, I feel like make up ages me and I look... whorish. Obviously part of that is finding makeup that suits you, but I feel that makeup looks odd on me (even when done by skilled MUAs) and I'll never get that pretty and polished look most girls have. I think you need to be careful about the colours and styles of makeup you choose. There are not a lot of tutorials out there that are done on people with your skin tone so often the colours used are too strong or harsh or just don't suit you, hence the adding years to your face. For colours that work for you I suggest looking at Lily Cole, she has a fairly diverse portfolio and in some images her makeup clearly makes her look older/sexy/downright weird and in others she looks fresh and lovely. For makeup styles obviously you need to base it off the shape of your features

manbabby ginger reporting in

Your facial features may differ from mine obviously, but what makes the most difference to me is eyebrows and face shape. I don't contour but with flattering glasses your face can look sooooo much better. I also tightline my lashes and draw in my eyebrows. That helps define your face somehow, I don't know much else as it's the only makeup I wear. Maybe nose contour can help?

At any point it's also a good idea to get a flattering haircut. My skin is warm-tinted which is apparently weird for gingers and I have dark red hair, so I don't know how much that can apply to you but I had the same problem with makeup until deciding to just fuck it and experiment until I find something I can get away with. My eyes also kinda bulge out and wearing anything on them just looks reeeeeally awkward.

Thanks for your input! Weirdly enough I've mastered the haircut thing, and even got my hair cut slightly differently yesterday and it's the most flattering cut I've had yet... Which has prompted the "take makeup more seriously and you'll be gorgeous" attitude.

I've been trying out different eyebrow shapes and been told when I had them done that my natural shape is really good for my face (thank god,I can only deal with minimal plucking), so I'm just learning to pencil them in now (as I've been advised by my hairdresser and friends) because they're a pale dirty blonde while my hair is really ginger. What colour do you use for yours? I asked in a Sephora and the lady recommended a hazelnutty colour so I've just been using that.

I can't into eyeshadow and eyeliner at all though, just had to look up tightline! It seems hard to do. I'm going shopping tomorrow and tempted to go to a Sephora or somewhere and ask for advice, but I always feel like they just recommend things to get you to buy stuff.

Yes it makes a big difference. Without it, no matter how long your eyelashes are they are sticking out horizontally right at people, which gives them the illusion of being smaller than they are. Curling them moves them vertically so they frame your eyes. Sort of like how a long pole only has a small visible circumference when pointed at you, you can only see its full length when it's stood up vertically, if that makes sense.

First figure out what compliments your face and coloring, then work out how to make it suitable to what you're wearing.
In general:
>sweet = lighter shimmery pearl tones and pastels, some bright accents, pastel or candy pinks for lips
>gothic = darker neutrals, jewel tones, not generally as harsh as traditional goth/alt fashion makeup, darker reds or burgundy into purples for lips
>classic = lighter softer neutrals, some shimmery neutral tones like rose golds as accents, and deep rose tones for lips and blush

Again you'll want to already know how to emphasize your features and not to wear anything that goes against your coloring (some people just don't work well in pastels, some don't work in jewel tones). Neutrals are always a safe bet and easy to customize to the style.

2) bend them back and forth a few times before applying them, so they're "softer" and less stiff
3) place a "drop" of glue at the end of the spine on each end, but keep glue in the middle as thin as possible
4) use tweezers to place the lashes, and hold the ends down for 2-3 seconds each with the back side (not the points) to let the glue set (glue instructions say to use your fingertip, but I find the glue sticks to that more easily and pulls the lashes back up)

Firstly, where would you say is best to get makeup help/tips? Sephora? Ulta? Macys? I'm in a big city so I have a lot of options and I'm not sure where to go.

Does anyone else have this problem when using liquid foundation and setting it with a loose powder foundation?

My liquid foundation matches my skin PERFECTLY (Revlon ColorStay 150), however when I go to set the foundation with a colored pressed powder (in my case I use Kat Von D's Lock It Powder in Light) it suddenly gets noticeably darker and it makes me look like a cakeface.

Should I try applying the powder with a brush instead of the little foam pad they give me? I need advice...

It also has to do with your glue. Sometimes the glue you're using can make or break how well it's going to stick. I have the best luck with Duo and Ardell brands.

I learned a little trick though. Put some on the top of your hand and let it start to dry. You can tell because the outer corners begin to change color, once it's changed and tacky, drag the lash through it carefully (make sure there is a little extra on the tips) and then apply it.

Cheap glue won't work and glue that isn't tacky enough is just going to slide off. So don't be too impatient. Tweezers often help me too.

If you want the foundation to last longer you could switch to more thicker make up because too runny ones won't last and cover that well. Also the 30 mins you're talking about is commonly known as ''cooking'' among drag queens when the make up warms up and it's easier to blend which means you should either be in a rather chilly environment or get something stronger than normal foundation if you want to get a longer lasting cover. Plus it also depends if you're not using primer of some sort to keep the make up in place.

Oh, and if you want a ton of different shades of lipstick you can always try Morgana Cryptoria and Ka'Oir Cosmetics. There are also a ton of etsy sellers that do these using all natural ingredients. I think ALL of them are cheaper than Limecrime. Every single one also has much more variety. The only advantage she ever had was the unicorn packaging and even that's not exactly great to me.

I have two of the Velvetines and I feel like shit every time I use them because Doe is such a shitfuck.

They are good in my opinion, but you know what? There are so many liquid to dry lipsticks, most of them good, that it doesn't even matter. You have plenty of choices from Maybelline to Kat Von D. You can even sample some of them at Sephora, which you wouldn't be able to do with the Velvetines.

There are also some really cheap lip stick top coats. I bought one from Amazon recently and while it burns when first applying, it really does make lipstick last longer.

I posted over in the Skincare thread too, but can I get a basic tutorial for "no makeup" or "natural" look cosplay makeup?

>> No.7764687

>>7764137

Do you want it to look natural in person or natural in photos? Because you can be wearing a lot of makeup and it will just barely show up in photos.

I'll give you my "no makeup" makeup routine, though, and a few notes on certain things that can be adjusted. You might want something more obvious than this for photos, though.

You should probably use a foundation without SPF in it so it doesn't reflect back in flash photos, but I mix a mineral makeup with a moisturizing serum (that has oils in it) because I have dry skin. I also don't use powder over top of it because even with the serum, mineral makeup is pretty powdery. If you have oily skin or use a liquid foundation for cosplay, you're probably going to want to set it with powder to make it stay on all day. The important thing for a "natural" look is to not use too much foundation and use concealer to cover blemishes. Your foundation should just even out your skin tone, not completely cover every red mark you've got.

I might get some flak for this, but this is how it works for me: I do my eye makeup before I conceal my undereye circles. I don't really wear eyeshadow or even really put anything on my upper eyelids except for maybe some highlighter on my browbone. A lot of people like to wear eyeshadow or foundation/concealer on the upper eyelid, so if you like the way you look with it, just keep it light and use nude shades and make sure you blend it in well.

I tightline my eyes with a pencil liner (I use brown, but I have very fair skin and light brown hair, so if you're darker coloured, black can be fine.). If you don't know what tightlining is, it's basically filling in the line JUST above your upper waterline, like where your eyelashes are. There are plenty of tutorials out there for it, and it really makes your eyeliner blend in more and gives you a more defined eye without looking like you're wearing tons of eyeliner. Lately I've been using a liquid eyeliner juuuust above my lash line, but only because it's a soft brown and because the brush is REALLY small. It's the Sailor Moon Liquid Liner that came out fairly recently, and it draws a VERY VERY thin line. I think the Dolly Wink liquid liner is pretty similar too? Unless I can get such a thin line, I don't wear liquid liner. I only follow the shape of my eye and don't do a cateye tail. Using a small, thin brush and some brown eyeshadow, I line my bottom lids, JUST under where the lashes grow, from the outer corners to just a little over halfway in and blend it. Then I gently fill in my eyebrows with a shade a little lighter than my actual eyebrow hair and blend in. If you have really thick defined brows you may not need to do this.

You can curl your lashes here if you want to (I don't just out of personal preference.). Take the mascara of your choice and a tissue, and clean off the excess goop on the mascara wands. I like a thinner, more liquid mascara because I don't think it clumps or looks as unnatural. Thoroughly and carefully coat the lashes. Then I take a clean mascara wand (no product at all) and brush it through my lashes while they're still wet to break up any clumps and define them.

(Cont. - Yeah I know it's really long, sorry.)

>> No.7764701

>>7764692

Clean up any fall out you have, and conceal your undereye circles if you have them. I have really dark ones, so I use a thin yellow-toned neutralizer, then an actual undereye concealer (I use the maybelline instant eye rewind stick thing), blend well, and powder them to set. You may not need all of that if yours aren't so dark, maybe just the concealer and a little powder. I use a powder specifically for undereyes, by the way. Then draw a little line from the inner corner to where the lashes start on the bottom lid with a shimmery ivory eyeliner pencil.

Blush is a pretty personal preference, depending on skin tone and the kind of character you're using, but if you want to use it, choose a colour that complements your skintone (I use peachy or a warm peachy pink because I have yellow tones, for example.). I put it on the apples of my cheeks and blend out well instead of doing it underneath my cheek bones or up towards my temple. I think it softens your face that way.

I also use a liquid highlighter with a very subtle shimmer, I don't know if that's something you want to do. I lightly apply it to the apples of and on top of my cheeks, up the bridge of my nose in a straightline, on my cupid's bow, and the middle of my forehead. You can find liquid highlighters in just about any colour.

Then for lips, I do the gradient thing anon mentioned in the other thread. I use skinfood tomato jelly lip tint all over my lips because it's not terribly pigmented, then tonymoly cat chu wink tint (which is very pigmented) just on the inside of my lips, like where my lips touch, and blend it out a little. I finish with a little bit of gloss or lip balm to the cupid's bow and center of my lower lip.

I check my makeup in different lightings after I'm done to make sure it looks okay in all of them. The key is just to not use too much of anything and make sure you don't have any hard lines. It's a lot of makeup, but if you're careful, most people can't tell.

Haha, aww, thank you. I'm glad you liked it- I was worried because it's a lot of words. I could talk about this for pages, I love makeup and I love discussing techniques and comparing and contrasting methods to pick up on new tricks.

Oh! Another thing is to really play around with it and find what you like and what works for you. Like different foundations work best with different methods of application. My old liquid foundation looked so cakey if I applied it with my fingers, but my new method (mixing serum + mineral makeup) works amazingly with finger application. Another technique I've gotten to like is applying my concealer in dots with a q-tip and letting it "cook" while I do my eyemakeup. I don't know if it'll work for your concealer, I use the NARS stick.

But mostly the tightlining and combing through your mascara while it's still wet, I think those are two of the most important things you can do.

>> No.7764830

I basically create a natural looking "mask" for myself in cosplay, with the point being to look good in photos but not like I'm wearing makeup. I have typical combination skin with an oily, acne prone t zone and dry cheeks. I start with oil controlling/matteifying and smoothing primer on my t zone, and just the smoothing one on my cheeks. If I have red spots or particularly bad dark circles I might use concealer, otherwise I go straight to foundation. I use two shades of Revlon colorstay for oily/combo skin (not necessary, but I have a summer and winter foundation anyway) and use the different shades to contour slightly as I apply my foundation. I then do my actual contouring around my jaw and nose, I tend not to emphasise my cheeks with contour when I'm going more natural, just use blush in a fairly toned down colour, which will still give my cheeks some emphasis. Then I brown/neutral tones around my eyes, usually with a hint of browbone highlight anda vertical gradient on my top lid which blends down to dark brown eyeliner,I don't use shadow under my eyes but just tightline. I sometimes use "natural" false lashes because my own are super sparse, or a thickening mascara (the kind with fibres). If you have naturally full lashes this tends to look more fake but I basically don't have any - however, I have eyebrows in excess so I let them be as long as I've groomed them in the last week. I then go for a lip tint or tinted balm

Seconding the request for advice, but girl I hope you're getting actual help for this. My face is also pretty sunken but for me it's not a weight issue. What I do is apply highlighter on my upper cheeks and blusher below that, both staying below my pupils and not blending out too much to the side. My 'contouring' consists of applying a bit of shadow under my chin and nothing more.

>> No.7766926

>>7765853

You can only really go so far with makeup, although contouring can be pretty powerful.

In your case I don't know if I would contour at all. I wouldn't use any dark shades (like bronzer or eyeshadow). Evenly apply foundation everywhere, blush on the apples of your cheeks, highlighter...

I've never actually done this, so maybe try it and see if it works, but maybe putting a little bit of highlighter where people normally contour? Like underneath your cheek bones, on the edge of your face, etc. Try to lighten up all the areas that recede so they look a little brighter and fuller maybe.

Could I please have some bb cream help? I'm Asian with oily, acne prone skin and really pale. I've tried bb creams from Western brands (Estee Lauder, The Body Shop) and they're all way too dark on me. It also seems like they do this thing where the color itself separates from the cream and it makes my face look strange.

I was looking at Skin Food's bb creams and Skin79's hot pink bottle. Does anyone know if this are good for my skin tone/type? Swatches online haven't been too helpful. Will they clog my pores? I don't even use foundation because no shades from any brand seem to be light enough for me, so trips to Sephora and department stores are becoming upsetting.

What are your undertones? Skin79's orange runs pretty light and is yellow-beige, and it's also supposed to be for oily skin. Their green label bb cream runs even lighter, but I'm not exactly sure of the undertone. It is also for oily skin. The hot pink bottle is darker than either of these.

Missha's bb creams in #13 are pretty light but also kind of pink toned, and they have this shade in several different formulas.

Just curious though- you said you've checked Sephora. Have you tried NARS Siberia?
