Mori is a style worked around the colours and vibes of nature.

>>7751530
IMO this question doesn't belong here. All black coords are not mori, and what you need to learn to achieve the look you want is just proper layering technique, which you can find elsewhere or figure out on your own by just looking at photos of everything from mori to dolly kei to goth ninja. Adding vintage elements is as easy as finding accessories or other pieces in black/gold/whatever other accents you want to use.

dont worry I have the hourglass shape. I just hate when it makes my butt look flat. Yeah all of the models tend to be flat really hard to apply it to my body type. You just need to work around it. I think it looks incredibly unflattering, but whatever floats your boat, Anon.
Where I live, there's some 'hippy' stores- they tend to focus on hemp/linen/natural fiber clothing. They also seem to have lots of imported clothing made from alpaca- that coat looks strikingly similar to one of them. I'm not sure if everywhere has these kinds of stores, but you'd probably have a good chance looking in places like that.

I feel as if just like called party kei, mori girl is starting to have a split between Western style and Asian style. Western style has heavier and darker fabrics with less layers while the Asian version has lighter fabrics and colors. Western version also seems to incoporate more knits. It leans towards boho. Asian is more shabby chic.

Dark mori is mostly a western invention and doesn't consist of all black clothing. This question has been beat to death in these threads, and the OP even stated the colour scheme and theme of mori in their post.

This,>>7754005 for example, is not mori so much as northern European "layered fashion" (I'm blanking on the word right now). Just because tumblr and shortcuttothestars wants shitty, western "dark mori" to be a thing doesn't mean it is one.
It's a made up, special snowflake term used to validate bad, hippy/wiccan outfits that don't fit the mori girl aesthetic in anything but occasionally layering style (and more often than not, not even this); there is no reason to call your outfit "dark mori."
If you want to incorporate darker colours (i.e. blacks/greys/dark navy blues), it's fine so long as they're balanced with other colours and fit the overall aesthetic, like this casual coord >>7754001 or pic related.
If you want to be gothy/witchy, do that and don't call it mori.

western girls can try their best to layer with correct fabrics (to avoid lagenlook, which honestly, is so similar to mori if it weren't for the absence of quirky delicate accessories), colors, and hairstyles all they want and they still get shat on for "inconsistency" or "deviation".
is mori turning into a brand-based fashion? the only person who seems to have it down without complaints in more than three photos is the dearli model, who is dressed by stylists. stylists who sometimes themselves deviate from their own packaged look, and the outfits are still completely accepted as mori. (pic related?)

look into your hearts. mori is a combination of cottage, prairie, hippie and even senile-elderly-woman-patching-together-lacy-tablecloths clothing. don't take it as seriously as lolita.

Like >>7755600 said, she's not styled, the's the designer and owner of Dearli. Images of her and other shop looks pop up often because they're plentiful and easy to find.
I like plenty of Japanese street snaps, many of which feature thrifted, not branded, items. The difficulty with dressing mori as a westerner comes from what you already mentioned– it's somewhat similar yet different from hippy/boho and lagenlook. Too many girls think that they can throw on anything that looks "hippy" or "brown and vintage" and call it a day. To create a good mori look, you need to understand colour balancing, layering, and how to mix fabrics.
There are a few good westerners (I posted both >>7755517 and >>7755526 and think they're both good, gohalainn is okay but not my personal favorite). My issue with the latter of those quoted looks is really just the bag and the way the uppermost top fits her.

While mori is different from lolita in that it isn't necessarily brand centric and doesn't have a set silhouette or set "rules," if anything, that makes it even harder to do properly. Saying "just wear what you want!!" is all good and fine, but if you look bad, people are going to call you out on it. I don't understand the aversion to criticism that so many people have, especially in the western mori community.

Also, it would strengthen your argument if you posted looks that you think are underrated/over-criticized. I have a hard time wading through all of the shit on the mori tags.

ahh, why the hell not. I'll translate the gist of it, but I'm kind of lousy at translating this slightly more formal style of writing.

"Mori Girl is a whimsical take on the theme of 'a girl who lives in the forest.' The concept is entirely imaginary, and is not a fashion suitable for a girl who actually lives in a forest.

Summary/Overview
The term "mori girl" originated on the social media site Mixi, where the owner of a mori girl community posted a comment on a friend's photo that read, "it looks like something a forest girl would wear." This community began in August of 2006, but 'mori girl' did not become that popular until around 2008, and by June of 2009, the mori girl community had amassed some 35,000 members. Mori girl was picked up by various fashion magazines in an effort to promote the concept, but the greatest response came when the magazine "spoon" printed a special extra on February 14, 2009, titled "Mori Girl A-Z." From then on, many different publishers put out various mooks about the fashion.

In terms of fashion style, mori girl generally incorporates loose, flower-patterned A-line dresses, tights, and flat shoes. In 2009, mori girl became a more common sight in Harajuku, when previously it was seen most frequently in the neighborhoods of Koenji, Shimokitazawa, and Daikanyama. Furthermore, within the mori girl community, natural kei and lolita are seen as distinctly different fashion styles, but a common opinion is that based on outward appearance alone, it can often be hard to distinguish between them. In addition to fashion, there is also interest and use of housewares that are natural and unprocessed, as well as goods that are of Scandinavian/Northern European origin.

>> No.7758309

>>7758304
In spoon's "Mori Girl A-Z," there are preferences/statements given, such as "I like airy-feeling dresses," "I like cameras," "I like DIY crafts," "I enjoy wandering around general stores."

As a representative of the mori girl fashion, model and designer MEG gathered data in Paris, France. She comments in a later interview, "Mori girl is perceived as a new, fresh current of Harajuku culture following in the wake of lolita and gothic lolita."

I know people have been saying this for years, but now I think it is finally coming true. Mori girl is dying in the west. I have many suspicions of why this is the case, but I may be wrong.

First, although there is a certain aesthetic to mori girl. The community considers them as guidelines than rules. This means, almost everything that is slightly shabby, black or brown becomes "mori" or even worse, dark mori.

Also, we do not have any specific brands. One of the reasons why lolita does so well, is because it is a fashion AND an investment. You know whatever you purchase, it will have some value down the road. This rarely applies to mori girl. This is why mori girl sales community is dead. Everyone can go to the thrift store to find what they want. Lacemarket, Livejournal, and Facebook keep lolita alive.

Finally, there is no concept of dream dresses/items in mori. Girls in lolita love to talk about their dream dress and aspire to get it one day. This doesn't exist in mori.

There are very few western mori girl idols. In lolita, we have quite a few lolitas that inspire us. I can't think of any in mori girl.

What mori girl is successful with is DIY. Lot's of mori girls love to show what they have made. Still, this is more craft related than fashion related.

It makes me so sad to see this fashion die.

The mori community doesn't need to be like the lolita community to be successful.
Mori isn't dying, it's just not the trending fashion right now, in Japan or the west.
Also:
>mori doesn't have brands!
Except it does. While not brand-centric, there are a number of distinctly mori brands. Also, fashion doesn't need brands (or dream dresses) to survive.
>We need western idols!
No, we don't.

Mori peaked in the late 2000s and was never huge in the west. If anything, I feel like it's more popular now than it has been, even if everyone still dresses like shit. I got into mori girl in 2011, before I got into lolita. There were a lot of blogs for it back then, but they are all dead now.

I would argue there were more "blogs" in general in 2011 than now. Half of my reading list is dead and everyone has moved to tumblr.
I think quite a few people have bought from mori brands, actually. There are quite a few "wonder rocket" and "favorite" haul posts out there as well as taobao reviews of mori-centric shops.
I don't really want a mori community. To me, the fashion is so wearable and everyday-life applicable that it doesn't matter. I talk to my normalfag friends about my outfits, do crafts with my lolita and sewing club friends, and just live my life. I also have online friends who are into mori, and while we chat/skype occasionally, none of us would ever really participate in a big group thing.
I like going to lolita meet ups because we can talk about brands, all dress to the 9s without dealing with a lot of public questions all on our own, etc.
I don't need that with mori.

I think a mori girl community is starting up in the northeastern US, but I can't recall where exactly.

If this is a store product shoot or a magazine shoot, they tend to be a bit looser with the mori 'rules' as it were and tend to use atypical colours, or outfit items (Dearli is a good example), I feel like these shoots are more about capturing the feel of a mori girl or lifestyle or an atmosphere than depicting actual mori outfits, and to sell certain mori items. Alot of these shoots are pretty but I wouldn't take it as gospel mori, and I wouldn't tag them as mori if I wore them in a personal coord photo or anything. Western mori girls have a hard enough time with standard mori looks without trying more avant garde looks.
Yes the colours are too bright/saturated but don't think primary colours are not mori girl, it isn't all cream/ecru, or all white or browns. You can use primary colours, just keep them muted.

The blues are still too bright because...they're too bright. I know that may sound dumb but if you look at the blue light reflected in the bubbles, as well as the blue on the left side of the blanket (past all the stuff) you can tell that the camera settings (plus photoshop) have been arranged to emphasize and exaggerate blue pigment. I would say that the outfit is pretty damn mori, not only because mori does make use of color, but because I'd be willing to bet that irl it would be fairly subdued looking.

Sort of actually. I live in the middle of the redwood forest in a town called Felton, I rent a shabby little "apartment" in a house. The forest is my backyard and there's lots of trails and secret places to go to! One of my favorite places is a little swimming hole in the middle of the forest off this crazy hiking trail, there's a lot of mini waterfalls and the water's always super fresh and clear. I'll usually go with a few friends and we'll bring some snacks!
I love living here because the forest is so big and there's so much to explore, there's actually a guy who sets up his drum kit on the side of a cliff and plays his drums lol

I know it's daunting to have to apply loads of layers because you think it's going to compound the bag lady look, but the opposite is true. Even if people don't get or like it, looking like you've deliberately dressed that way is always better than looking like you don't know what you're doing and threw anything on. Anyway, more specific crit for each outfit:

>>7765611
Head accessory, even just a knit beret would improve this by miles. Also you have really nice hair, obviously you're not going to style it just for a pic to show /cgl/ but I think a cute hairstyle would improve this a lot too. Halo braids with little flowers woven in maybe. Overall it needs more texture and more layers. Incorporate some heavy knit and somewhere in there. A really really baggy slouchy cardigan would help improve the layering situation. Like this >>7764729
Maybe throw on a shawl too.Try wearing longer socks and slouch them, with legwarmers over the top as well. If your socks are tight they should be heavily textured, like cable knit.
I like the shoes but I think something chunkier like loose leather walking boots would add a little more balance. They also look adorable with layers of socks/legwarmers.

>>7765617
Again, there just isn't enough going on in this outfit at all. It doesn't look like a deliberate style, you kind of look like a mom who threw some stuff on to run to the shop. I don't know if there's any saving this one because it doesn't seem to have much basis in mori to begin with.

>> No.7765662

>>7765623
I would say your layering isn't the biggest issue actually, I think you have the right idea on that aspect. Let me break down my thoughts on the 2 outfits you just posted, starting with
>>7765611

So, in mori kei fashion it's important to have a good sense of color, balance and texture. the top half looks pretty good, the shirt has a nice pattern and the denim adds good texture to this outfit. However moving down to the bottom of the dress, it begins to fall flat. I'm unsure if the white portion is attached to the dress or not (if it is, it might be wise to just remove it from the dress completely). That white section turns this from cute mori to a little bit frumpy. It would be a lot better with a crochet trim or lace skirt underneath, depending on how handy you are. Also, pure white doesn't fit in this look. The socks are off putting, especially so close to the white trim on the dress. I would suggest getting some neutral colored socks (I can link some that I use, they have a really cute crochet top that's perfect for mori).
So to sum things up for this, trash the white trim on the dress, switch it out for a lace skirt or sew on some crochet trim. Get different socks in a darker color than the skirt / trim, with either a pattern or texture. I'll link you some stuff when I'm done.

For the next outfit, the top is really sticking out to me. It doesn't fit the style, and is a little confusing to me. The skirt is fine, but maybe switch out the top for a floral printed top in the same style, or just something with a texture such as denim or a linen type fabric. This adds depth. A plaid could go well in here too, a plaid shawl or poncho in combination with a darker top. You can make one with a plaid blanket, just cut a hole in the middle and wear it over your head

Use a texture, add a pattern, contrasting brightness, etc.
Fur, flannel, linen, denim. Florals, plaid, simple geometrics. Earth tones!!! You can do it anon.

>> No.7765846

I'll write general tips at the end, outfit specific crit under each post. 1/2
>>7765611
The top of this looks like it has some potential, since you're kind of playing with texture, pattern, and colour. However, I don't like the bodice of that dress, and you need some sort of hair accessory, especially if you're not going to style your hair in a way that's more visually striking (curling, braiding, etc.)
The bottom of the outfit is really lacking. Like another anon said, the trim on the dress doesn't suit the aesthetic and feels out of place. The socks are a total miss; knee socks are not flattering, especially on medium-bigger legs, and the white is out of place. You'd be better off wearing a pair of patterned/textured tights or leggings. Bunched socks look best with boots, too, imo.

>>7765617
This doesn't look like you're even going for mori. Here, because you've done so little with the outfit, you kind of look like someone who just threw on whatever you could find, which is exactly what you should be trying to avoid.
The top looks too old Navy and ill-fitting to work for you, imo. You need some more fitted layers to make the looser ones work. The shoes also don't work here, and you need legwear.

>> No.7765870
File: 205 KB, 736x1100, 008.jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]
7765870

>>7765846
2/2

>>7765634
Once again looks too old-lady, imo. You're not working your layers enough to make the plainness of the pieces and colouring work, and the huge chunks of colour that aren't tied together look bad. I'm glad to see that you tried to wear a hair accessory this time, but that hat needs to be modified to suit the aesthetic, I think. Even a detachable ribbon detail would do the trick.
I hate that shawl thing and thus like >>7765643 more despite it being so basic. Being able to see the underskirt isn't such a big deal, but you could easily remedy this by wearing more under or over the pink dress.
The long, unadorned layers of the underskirt aren't working well for you here, either. It needs to be piecer and lighter (in the sense of weightlessness). I feel like your shoe and sock choices (as well as skirt lengths) are not flattering on your legs, and here again, legwear with more coverage would probably help.

In general:
Please learn to layer and use colour better. Like >>7765660 said, more layers make your outfits look more deliberate and thus (usually) better. If I had seen these elsewhere, I would not have even guessed you were going for mori.
Incorporate accessories, especially ones with a mori girl feel. Only one of your outfits featured any sort of accessory, which is bad in any fashion. Necklaces, brooches, hairpieces, bracelets, bags, etc. all really help bring an outfit together.
Please start styling your hair and wearing a bit of makeup. While mori is a more "natural" style, you still need to put effort into your hair and face. Mori girl lessons have makeup and hair tutorials, and links to the scans were posted upthread.
Please buy some other shoes and socks. Boots/ brogues with a small heel and tights/leggings will make your legs look much nicer. Invest in some patterned ones and some simple lace ones.

I don't mean to be rude, but I think you should lurk more, learn more, and build your wardrobe before you wear mori.

Both chunky and lightweight nits work fine. I think lightweight are more versatile, though.

I've only ever crocheted a collar and some little cherries and strawberries for accessories. I mostly make little bears to give as gifts.

On another note, I wish there were a few good western mori girls so that they/we could collaborate and make a little zine or something. Not that anon, but the unified problem with all three outfits is that they're too symmetrical. Mori outfits are generally unbalanced and play with asymmetry - this adds to the concept of things being more natural because only man-made landscapes have perfectly cut trees and such. This is what layering is supposed to simulate - if all your layers are all just horizontal lines you won't look mori regardless of how many layers you pile on.

Knitting anon again. I'm trying to see if I've got the right sort of feel for knits and crochet in mori? I like the look of crochet incorporated with regular fabrics, too. But am I getting the right sort of feel here with these?

I can also dredge up the patterns for these (and if you want some other kind of pattern, I have pretty good ravelry-search-fu) if people want - they're all on ravelry. (And if anyone has knitting/crochet questions, I can try to help?) The nice thing about knit and crochet (and tatting, but I can't tat.) is that you can easily adapt size to make things more exaggerated/add length, can custom size, and yarn comes in every imaginable colorway possible.

Some of these are good, but a lot are not, in my opinion. I think bigger graphics (like the animals here) are best avoided in mori, but the little pouchette things work because they're so small/accessories. Things like the animal-ear hats make me cringe, and that big green hat just doesn't work for me.
I think things like the blue/teal/whatever knit in the bottom right don't work for a few reasons. The band at the bottom doesn't allow for the same amount of layering and is too symmetrical, and the arms wouldn't look good with anything over or under (besides a camisole, as pictured.
I wasn't sure about the green shirt. I think it looks bad and like maternity wear, but maybe that's just me.

I think they're pretty costumey and tend to be poorly executed, but I've seen them done well once or twice.
Generally, the smaller and more natural (i.e. less cartoony, see pic related), the better. I think they also need to be balanced with/incorporated into other elements, so they really only work with fairly elaborate hair styles/schemes.
You're trying to dress like a little forest fairy, not a deer, and hence big/ostentatious antlers or fawn makeup of any sort kills an outfit, in my book. I am so goddamn glad the fawn trend is dying.

>> No.7767806

>>7767704
The thing is, anything with a graphic/colorwork can be made plain, so would the shape of the deer poncho work if made solid? Green top could be extended down into a dress? Though I'm not sure I would want a full-knit dress, even out of something like linen or cotton. I figured the same for the brown cardi, take it down to mid thigh. But in general, dropped waists/no defined waist?

The animal things are actually wrist warmers, but easy to adapt into a pouchette.

Are slouchy hats in general sort of a no? Knit berets seem to be more the theme?

I'd actually probably rather have the teal crochet top with the star motif as a poncho, elongated vest, or shawl, anyways.

Thanks for the help.

I think heavier knits work best as more open/asymmetric ponchos and cardigans/boleros. I've also seen long, sweater-dress type things look nice.

I think slouchy hats can work, I just think they need to be more neutral, perhaps thinner(?), and a bit smaller. I don't like them, but that's personal preference. Here's a pic of someone wearing it (though I think this outfit, especially the cowl/scarf thing, isn't great).
Also, I don't knit, just sew and crochet little things, so I honstly don't know what kind of patterns are out there, but I feel like you would get a better idea of what works if you looked over mori girl magazine scans.

I really like the deer poncho, honestly, and the bear hat. Maybe it's a bit big like the other anon said, but it reminds me of the whimsical side of the fashion that seems to get overlooked a lot.

Yeah (knitting anon again), I'm just an absolutely enormous animal lover, so I'm immediately drawn to animal-related things. My biggest problem with the bear hood is actually that it looks terrible on anyone older than six, and that the examples are all made in bad yarn and bad colorways.

I guess I just need to turn down the twee.

It's not because you don't like it, that it's not mori. Besides, it doesn't matter how good it looks, I just wanted to prove to anon dark mori does excist. I've seen a few good ones in these threads before but I didn't save the pictures.

It's not "dark mori." Nowhere except tumblr and western blogs is "dark mori" a phrase. If it's mori, it's mori; stop trying to be a special snowflake.
Also, >>7766109 that doesn't ring mori to me. How exactly does that remind you of a romanticized forest girl?
Mori can definitely incorporate darker colours, but the only all black/grey outfits I've seen have been from people like shortcuttothestars, who tags practically /everything/ she wears as mori, whether it is mori or not.
You still need to keep the patterns, motif, and colour basics of a fashion when you wear it, and the outfit you posted doesn't.
Does it play with textures, fabrics, and layering nicely? Yes. Does it feel like mori? No.

Is this the cue to break out my 'this is what dark colors in mori look like' image(?).

Personally I couldn't give a shit if people like to use the same texture matching and layering techniques as found in mori, use dark colors or all black then call it 'dark mori'. I also kinda like some of the ensembles and would wear similar outfits myself. 'Dark mori' in the tumblr sense however, to my knowledge, has never been a thing in glorious nippon.

Thanks for proving my point. I said dark colours can be used just fine and even posted an example. Every outfit you posted (like the one I posted) incorporates earth tones or typical mori patterns/fabrics and items (i.e. brown leather boots, lace accents, etc.) whereas >>7766109 does not.
My issue with "dark mori" is that it's just some special snowflake term used only by tumblrtards who want to feel different and ~unique~.
I have seen maybe one or two outfits on the dark mori tag that are any decent. Most of them just look like shitty hippy/witchy bullshit.

That's literally what fashion is about. Seeing, analyzing, and applying. Each fashion has certain fundamentals that make it recognizable, and that you have to know before you can play around with it. If layering isn't one of the mori fundamentals then what do you propose the fundamentals are?

Here's similar pineapple crochet in a scarf: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/p12-pineapple-scarf
