Hey, /cgl/, I've spent the better part of the last two years trying to get in shape and I'm looking for popular characters to cosplay. I'd like to cosplay Bane, not necessarily the Tom Hardy version, I only single him out because of his visibility but I am concerned because I am only five feet, eight inches tall.

Is there a lot of criticism for cosplayers shorter than the characters they portray? I know that in photos it wont really matter, but I play to have my cosplay done for the fall/winter convention season.

Tom Hardy is 5'9. CIA was actually taller than him. You should be more concerned about the muscles and accuracy of the costume.

Canonically, Bane is at least 6'+. Even though Hardy is a manlet they shot all his scenes from specific angles to make him look much taller than he is.

Personally I'd look the other way on height provided the rest of the costume was good and you had an otherwise fitting physique for it. Now if you were like 5'3" we might have a problem, but that's purely my opinion.

I rarely see much criticism over height discrepancies in cosplay, either way. Weight, physique, hair, etc., sure, that stuff comes up all the time. I almost never see height raised as an issue.
