AWESOME PANELS GENERAL

Just to brighten up the discussion brought to you by >>7696221

For me Zapp Brannigan Spaceship of Love is always a hit and proves that in character panels can be glorious

>Uncle Yo
Every con I ever went to he is always there, either in the masquerade or his own panel. Was always funny and made the crowd enjoy themselves. I'm glad he's still around.

>>7699530

He's always at my local con (ConnectiCon) and they always shove him in a small-ass room so only people willing to wait in line for over an hour can get in. He would entertain a much bigger space if they let him; he's main-event tier.

Why does it seem so much easier to bash than praise on /cgl/?

>>7700741

Because as much as /cgl/ loves conventions, they recognize that most panels are godawful. It's Sturgeon's Law in action. It's a lot harder to put together a good panel than it is a bad one, and talented people who can actually host a good panel are far rarer than fucktards who just want to talk about their favorite anime in front of an audience.

>> No.7701082

Those cowplay wrestling panels are awesome. I saw the one at AX14 a couple weeks ago, I didn't go in with high expectations, but it was actually really fun and funny.

>> No.7701104

Any Dana Snyder panel ends up being a riot, especially his smaller ones.

There's a local group who do 'Name that Tune' very well. You can tell they've been doing it for a while because they run it like a machine and don't take any shit and include the entire crowd.

I run some of the panels from this con. Thus far I haven't heard anything bad about them but obviously I can't prove how awesome they are without recorded video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Je14NOVgzMM

Anyway, the most successful one (IMO) was

>12:00AM Alt. Hentai Art Critique
>An investigation of the emergence of a new paradigm of “visual culture” vis-à-vis late night discussion. This is a formal artistic analysis of alternative hentai as a deconstruction and subversion of beauty in a post-photography world, concordant with contemporary epistemology but contrary to contemporary bio-physics (as such). Event is 18+.

Basically I grabbed some ultra weird shit from /d/ and then my partner and I would delve into how the piece could be interpreted using valid academic terms liberally sprinkled with random bullshit. Eventually it wound up being a round circle discussion with people raising their hands and contributing what the pics mean to them.

"This piece is both a celebration and a condemnation of cross-cultural exchange vis-r-vis globalization. Stocking, representing the Westernized East, is eating a pizza of a people, representing the Easternized West (Italians). Now the question everyone's asking is: what does this mean for feminism? Of course, it would do a disservice to the artist to disregard the allusions to Rembrant's Christ in the Storm of Gallilee with the pizza acting as the vessel for Christ (either the people or the cheese) and Stocking as the mighty leviathan of other such religious import."

Went on for an hour, people loved it. It's great just to use big words and have everyone nod and agree and then give an interpretation that is the complete opposite of what you said.

I'm rambling but it was fun.

I think its more of the 2/10 rule of customer service.

People are less likely to talk about good panels than complain about bad ones. Much like how companies feel that customers are more likely share stories of bad experiences with company products than recommend good ones.

The ideas are not really the issues moreso the presenters. Many of the bad examples are good topics ruined by people who don't know how to give a presentation to save their lives

Best thing about apop is that you have the freedom to do crazy panels. I can't imagine a con like AN accepting that.

>> No.7706957

A small con I go to locally has had an "Is it hentai?" panel the last two years. It would be so bad if the people running it weren't hilarious. The gist is that they play a sound clip or non-hentai scene and the contestants they call up have to choose whether it is hentai or not. Simple. But they choose the MOST fucked up hentai when it is hentai, and they also create their own sound effects for those that are not. Plus they have booby prizes and good prizes and at the end of the panel they give away all of the leftover prizes. It's my favorite panel every year and I always die laughing.

>> No.7706962

Any panel with Chuck Huber.

>> No.7707075

Now I host the panel about to mention, but I'm mentioning it for the prespective of hosting it. I host a panel with some friends called that Video Game Sucks at the AZ cons I am able to go to. I love this panel as someone who is a part of it to see the games the other people play.

For those of you who don't know people take turns raising their hands we call on them and comedically most of the time tell you why the game sucks. The thing we try to keep is that our statements must be valid whilst still being comical. I love watch people laugh and I will continue to provide this panel as entertainment.

At youmacon there's 'your favorite video game sucks' which is pretty much /v/ but without shitposting
They also host the speed runs panel which is really fun to watch.

I was drunk when I wrote that post. I tried to delete it but it was too late.

You have my blessing. It's not like anyone would be able to stop you anyway.

>>7706937
It wouldn't be that hard to do it at AN. The trick is to get in real cozy with the staff. You wanna know why there were like 7 MLP panels that one year? Because the staff liked MLP and their brony friends wanted to do panels and they got auto-approved. There's a game and you gotta play it.

>>7706261
Agreed. Likewise, many shitty topics can be made amazingly entertaining if the right people are running them.

>>7709272
That's terrible. I try to make a point of running down people who take pictures/videos and getting their contact info. This goes for cosplay too. You can't be sure that someone is gonna upload to FB, tumblr, 4chan, whatever.
