Invest in circle lense to make your eyes pop. Get some makeup on, contouring etc. You should be fine for passing cause your face is kinda roundish too. You might experience some problems with a thicker neck (as I do ) but it can be covered up to some degree depending on the wig of your character.

Hall lighting is usually too dim for good photography to occur unless the photog has a surface to bounce his flash off or carries a good reflector/softbox around. But if this is you it is pretty good potential you have there.

Oh dear this is such a bad picture and so over shooped but these two seem to have some potential. Sanae needs some better makeup and slouch less. I have a feel the sakuya's face is way over shooped, but uh, imagining the original, he could easily look good if he worked on it. I think wearing heels matter a lot, even a low heel because it changes the posture and the way you stand. They way he's standing is very masculine lol.

I think what a lot of crossplayers forget to do is compensating for features they don't have. They put chest padding but guys obviously usually have slimmer hips, so hip/butt padding is needed as well. Furthermore, many have longer torsos so they forget to try to visually make their waistlines higher via shapewear or just hiking up the skirt. So many potentially good crossplays ruined because they didn't take advantage of having a skirt by using a petticoat(s) and/or wearing the skirt far too low.

Pic related for example but not me. He's pretty good but should have made a fuller skirt to make his hips appear wider.

I'm also pretty tall.. Well, normal for a guy, but you know. I could go with XL clothing like I usually do, but the people who make cosplay suits have stupidly big waists on their XL sizes (probably because otakus are fat as shit).. So I just ask them if they do a custom size for me, I give them my waist/hip, bust, shoulder width, height, desired sleeve length, leg circumference (if it's a pants) and desired skirt length and usually they do my custom size without additional costs

my usual sizes are 180cm tall, chest 85, hip 90cm, skirt length 60cm (don't want to look too revealing), sleeve length 20cm

Usually such a small chest and hip is only on their S-size, but my length is an L or XL size. Asking for custom makes sense. Sorry though, can't show what I look like right now, costume isn't completed yet

Anon, I think you're construction looks alright so far, but I think the box pleats on your shirt could sit higher. If the top of the pleats sat at elbow height, where male torso tends to be thinnest, the flare would be more flattering/feminine.

try contouring from the area slightly in front of the jaw joint down to you chin. Experiment to see how much you can "shave" off your jawline. the effect only becomes more pronounced with flash photography though

New to cross/cosplay, planning on crossplaying as Homura as my first try. I lack the resources and/or technical skill to make my own costume so i've been looking into purchasing one - is there any way of knowing whether or not something will be good quality?

Every guys ability to pass depends on the guy. Some have very prominent masculine features while others need a lot of work to cover facial hair (fucking asians). I had to go to a make up artist for when I started to get in drag to find out exactly what I needed to get and do.

Online make up tutorials for drag generally FUCKING SUCK. Most of them seem to advice caking it on and that doesn't help you pass at all. :|

I hope I was able to help in any way. If you do have stubble, get your skin tone matched with Dermablend. That shit is what you need.

What do you guys recommend for daily skin care to achieve all-around smoothness?
I've neglected my skin for so long (~15 years+). Is it even something salvagable?

I tried using some men's 3-in-1 lubriderm lotion and my skin looks a decent amount better but my face is more oily than normal now and the redder spots are even more pronounced.

sorry, this is only something you can achieve with hormones

one of the things you can do is apply various lotions, but i'm highly doubtful that does much. though a lot of guys usually get quite serious acne compared to girls (who can simply take their birth-control pills to control acne), so acne scars and redness in the face is a pretty big issue for guys. I'm currently saving up for laser therapy of my skin to de-pronounce some of my acne scars and redness. Not sure if that's going to make an objective difference (after paying up, I probably will see a difference myself, but that doesn't mean other people around me will see it as an improvement)

I've had reasonable luck with Veet hair removal cream. For me it seems to work best with a liberal application and keeping it moist before you rinse it (and the hair) off.

Wait we should clarify this. Do not get your facial hair waxed unless it isn't very thick. Most guys cannot get their facial hair waxed off because it's more coarse than even hair on your head. Most places will refuse to do this on men because you can pull out skin and it will get all fucked up.

If you are hardcore you do a super close shave with dermablend for coverage or for super hardcore mode get electrolysis for permanent hair removal.

See if you have any asian lady salon's around. The kind that do nails waxing and other things. They're usually pretty cheap and effective. I get my brows done for $8 and I give them $10. They'll always ask you if you want lip or some other waxing too to add onto the price, get it if you want and no thanks you if you don't.

1. Can I pull it off? I am 5'11", 175 lbs, kind of thick build. I crossplay Touhou but I think the expectations for fitting into characters in that community are lower.
2. Is makeup and such necessary? Can I just wear sunglasses and be a bro or is that frowned on?

The skirt right now is actually WAY too long and I'm currently having it hemmed to be much shorter. I'm not planning on wearing a petticoat actually and in the picture I just have my knee bent which is why the skirt is flayed like that. I'm hoping that if I shorten the skirt it will be less straight but we'll see. Honestly though I'm just looking to have fun and meet other fans of the show, so while I would love to be passable, having a blast is my first priority.

I'm not the guy you're commenting on, but it looks like the generic costume that's for sale on ebay, coupled with a blonde long-hair wig.

I don't personally think shoes matter that much, unless you're entering a contest.. After all, they can be quite expensive, and you're generally only going to wear them a couple of times. Well that's your decision of course, but Maria-holic shoes can also be bought on ebay if you must, and probably also on costume websites..

When I was thinking about what future cosplays I wanted to do I knew I wanted to do something ffrom MH yet I didn't have many choices and decided this would be the most fun and most recgonizable. I got the outfit online, if you just search for Maria Holic cosplay there are a few different ones out there for varying prices. As for the shoes I'm just doing some nice brown dress shoes. I was planning on having my friend "Crossplay" as Maria's sister Shizu but she backed out. Just hope I run into a Kanako at Otakon for some fun pictures or something.
