>No, they did not. We took multiple measures to ensure they wouldn’t, and it isn’t likely that anyone slipped through the system’s fail-safes. Originally, we intended to only use bright orange bracelets that read “OVER 18” in large, easily readable letters. They are made in such a way that, when even sort of snugly, they are very difficult to remove without destroying them. However, many of the bracelets weren’t secured tightly enough or were instead attached to the attendees’ lanyards, which reduced their efficacy to essentially zero. [Photo below]

Wow what fucking bullshit. Unless you have people with Parkinson's attaching these bracelets, this should not be rocket science.

>If you donated cash and would like it returned, please also let us know by 11:59pm EST on Saturday, July 19, 2014. Please send an email to dashcondonations@gmail.com with “Cash Donation Refund” in the subject line. Within the body of the email, please include your full name, phone number, Invoice ID from your badge purchase [to verify your ability to have been in attendance], and the amount you donated. Upon advice of our legal counsel, we have been instructed to sort through claims, try and determine legitimacy [based on total amount claimed versus total amount received], and make an informed decision about potential refunds in coordination with both legal and accounting at that time.

I cannot fathom how any of that is remotely possible. I am glad to see they are offering refunds to people who used paypal, but if you took cash "donations" with the intention of paying it back at a later date...they needed to issue receipts and retain copies of those receipts.

Granted, they weren't prepared at ALL for the $17,000 fundraiser but they shouldn't have accepted cash "donations" or at least told people that by giving them cash you are making an actual donation and shouldn't expect that money to be paid back.

I cannot fuckin believe that they're going to try for next year. I mean, props that they're trying to be "transparent" with what happened this year but all they've shown us is they can't manage their way out of a wet paper bag. Still amused by this mistake.

From >>7690686
>According to the speaker, the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center Hotel had come down with a case of “buyer’s remorse.” They were unhappy with the “type of clientele” the con had brought in, and “within the contract,” they were entitled to demand the money still owed them by DashCon, which totaled a now-infamous $17,000. If the convention couldn’t comply, the hotel would start kicking people out and shut down the con.

From Dashcon.org
>Additionally, it was suggested that the Renaissance Schaumburg had denigrated our attendees, saying that they didn’t like the ‘type of clientele’ our event brought in. That has since been proven 100% untrue. When two of the Con Heads were told by the third that such a thing had been said or otherwise insinuated, it wasn’t wholly unbelievable—as it’s happened to so many other events in the past—and, in our state of panic, we believed what we were told, therein passing it along to our attendees.

>Knowing what I know about the ins and outs of running a convention, I believe that the staff of DashCon 2014 bit off way more than they could chew and, as a result, spent the weekend choking, sputtering, and searching in vain for someone willing to perform the Heimlich. The warning signs were all there on day one: the fancy hotel, the high-quality badges, the unusually steep registration fee. It was basically a sandcastle built on a fault line.

>This does not mean that I hold them unaccountable. Yes, they got in way over their heads, but DashCon had a duty to the attendees, guests, panelists, media, and vendors, and they let them down. No, it wasn’t a terrible experience for me, personally—I had fun, and so did many of the people I spoke with—but the disasters were extreme, the repercussions are still rippling, and a lot of people either lost money or straight-up were not paid. That is not okay.

Tumblr convention in Schaumburg implodes
Attendees hit up to cover $17,000 bill
Eric Peterson

>A social media convention at the Schaumburg Convention Center last weekend -- aimed at Tumblr bloggers and their followers -- went horribly wrong when organizers were forced to raise $17,000 on the spot from those present or reachable online to prevent the event's immediate cancellation.

>The debacle has since sparked a life of its own on Tumblr and elsewhere -- from satirical listings of other things that could be bought for $17,000 to ridicule of the organizers' apology that included "an extra hour with the ball pit" for those who had reserved seats for a canceled guest panel.

>DashCon 2014 -- a reference to the "dashboard" or feed of a Tumblr account -- was organized by DashCon LLP of Hudson, Ohio. Its owners and staff appeared to take full responsibility in a Tumblr posting for what they called a miscommunication with the staff of the Schaumburg Renaissance hotel.

>Much of the online derision in the days since has focused on the ball pit. The pit wasn't the large kind normally associated with entertaining several children at once, but an inflatable kiddie pool filled with colorful plastic balls, and unlikely to accommodate more than one of the convention's adult attendees at a time.

>Photoshopped images of the pathetic little pool in outrageous locations and situations have cropped up on Tumblr and on Twitter under the hashtag #dashcon. One example is a movie still of Oliver Twist with a bowl of the plastic balls in his hands asking, "Please sir, can I have another hour?"

>Among the things bloggers calculated could be bought for $17,000 are 5,576 Jell-O pudding cups or 932 years of the 5-cents-a-day psychiatric advice of Lucy from the "Peanuts" comic strip.

>> No.7691553

>>7691550
>The $17,000 raised to keep the three-day convention from ending on Day One was collected in cash from those in attendance, as well as from PayPal donations from those who weren't. The convention was billed online as "the largest gathering of Tumblr users to date, concentrating on the particulars of this stand out social media site."

>The convention was not affiliated with Tumblr, a microblogging and social media platform that allows users to post and share text, video, photos and other content. According to the company, it hosts more than 195 million blogs that have produced 83.1 billion posts.

>Money going out was as much an issue as money coming in.

>One of the scheduled panels was for members of The Baker Street Babes podcast -- female fans of Sherlock Holmes who embrace all versions of the character in print, film and television.

>Lyndsay Faye, a New York-based member of The Baker Street Babes, attended DashCon with an understanding that the group's airfare and hotel rooms were being paid for by organizers.

>They had their credit cards swiped when they arrived, apparently only for incidentals, but were later informed they would be on the hook for their hotel rooms, Faye said. Organizers, she said she was told, had removed their own credit cards from the system.

>The only reason The Baker Street Babes are expecting to be fully reimbursed is that their leader, Kristina Manente, took a very adamant stand with the organizers, Faye said.

>The owners of DashCon LLP, Megan Eli and Roxanne Schwieterman, did not return calls or emails from the Daily Herald seeking comment on what went wrong.

>"They're not explaining what happened to anyone at the moment," Faye said.

>Faye said she's sure the Schaumburg Renaissance had nothing to do with any of the event's mistakes or mishaps. On the contrary, she said hotel staff treated her and her fellow panelists with extraordinary care and politeness.

>> No.7691556

>>7691553
>Lisa Timbo, general manager of the Schaumburg Renaissance, said she wasn't at liberty to discuss the specifics of DashCon LLP's contract, other than that it had been fulfilled.

>Timbo added that the attendees of the event were a welcome and very respectful group largely made up of Millennials. DashCon is not under contract for a return to the convention center, she said.

>The first indication Faye had that there was something not quite right with the convention was that attendance estimates were listed between 3,000 and 7,000 -- an unusual lack of specificity. And though the audience on Friday night was very enthusiastic, their numbers were far below even the lower range of the estimate, she said.

>The presence of the now infamous ball pit on the convention floor wasn't a specific popular culture reference, but merely intended as a fun or cute addition to the event, Faye explained. The promise of an extra hour in the pit was offered to make up for the cancellation by a panel of members of "Welcome to Night Vale," a podcast described as "A Prairie Home Companion" for horror fiction.

>"That did not seem compensatory at a rational adult level," Faye said.

My brother wrote this up, but had no where to put it, so Imma throw this on here.

>I work for a leading event management company and I’m sorry to say but Dashcon fundraisers were most certainly scammed.

>I work for a leading event management company. I won’t say my name or the name of my company for integrity reasons but I can say that we work on over 300 professional conventions a year. We are invloved in the planning, registration, and housing for these shows, so needless to say, I know a thing or two about the industry.
>My brother made me aware of this Dashcon uproar and wanted my input on the situation. Mainly he wanted to know if the $17,000 needed to stay in the hotel was legit or not.
>Well, sadly it looks like you all have been scammed.
>When doing a mass booking for a hotel, you have to give them a rough estimate in advance of how many rooms will be booked. From there the hotel will give out a block of rooms for the convention to give out to it’s attendees. It is expected that all of the rooms blocked will be booked for that weekend. When youdon’t have the rooms booked, you will have to pay the difference. Basically, when people block rooms, they need to be pretty on point when it comes to the number attending.

>Seeing as there was a poor attendace for the show (I read it was about 1000 attendees when they were expecting 5000), it sounds like the hotel threw them a large bill for giving misinformation and they didn’t want to pay it (which if you are an organizer for the show, you shouldn’t make attendees pay for your mistake). The whole “getting kicked out if we don’t pay” is a load of bullshit. That goes against the Innkeeper Law.
>Or the actually just took the money for themselves (which is even worse).
>Regardless, there’s no way on this planet their “we are gonna get kicked out if we don’t raise $17,000” is true. Sorry. If I were you, I would demand my money back. Like that would happen, but still.

Late to the party but I do beleive it is possible. It happened to a brony Con named Unicon, on the third day money run short for the same mismanagement bullshit (not enough fund for way to many guests) where the organisers couldn't pay for the hotel and simply ran away, and the con ended up finishing early because the hotel kicked them out (they did the same "rush for donation thing" but instead it was to pay the Guests who came because the organiser bankrupted), still a sortof scamming I guess.

Roxanne can't act like anyone else is responsible for mismanagement and lack of oversight. Unless she was passing the buck to others to get things done, she is the boss and is responsible for how things were run.
Even if she gave someone else a bunch of responsibility and power it's still her fault for giving it to them! They need to stop blaming faceless people and take responsibility for how ultimately, everything is their fucking faults.

>most panel descriptions were written by this totally random person that got sick from cancer or something
wtf, most panel descriptions are written by the PANEL AUTHORS and approved by the staff, at every legitimate con.
>we were using numbers that were gathered through an RSVP-style poll. For a first year convention, much of the initial information is based on informed guesses. Given that we had around 1500 people pre-registered, I still stand by the estimate that we’d have reached about 3000 if things had gone as planned. It was the issues we faced that deflated our ‘at-the-door’ sales, and with good reason. There was no intentional misleading done there. Also, we had stopped leaving the upper end at 7000, dropping it to 5500 due to space limitations.
So you're saying <500 people who registered dropped for no fucking reason. Either you guys are dumb enough to have prereg you don't have to actually pay for, or you're lying out of your ass
>Also, the 5000-8000 estimate was made prior to the events of this past weekend.
You made this event with zero evidence you'd actually obtain these numbers. I haven't seen a single reasonable dashcon post that breached 4,000
>we were wrong about nightvale
wow, no fucking shit.
>The IndieGoGo was never within the realm of my or Cain’s control. I was not brought on as a partner until May 28, 2013, whereas the IndieGoGo (based on the actual campaign page I just went and found) ended on April 13, 2013.
So invisible people no one knows anything about were responsible for these statements you couldn't be bothered to retract. Sounds legit.
>The fact that someone changed rule 21 during the event has no bearing on the fact that rule 25 states: “The Schedule is subject to change at any time, even during the convention.” Everyone who bought a badge agreed to these rules, including the fact that the schedule could indeed change at any time. >http://dashcon.tumblr.com/post/92035400621/fuckno-con-dashcon-dashcon-separating-facts
So I've been searching their statement for self-incrimination language. Not surprisingly, most of it blames other, invisible people.
>In light of those events, we felt it was questionable whether they would even want us to continue with our original plan and, thus, we didn’t. I’ve since spoken to our Random Acts contact, and it seems we made the right decision.
So it wasn't their fault, they just didn't notice this.
>Most of our panel descriptions were written by an admin who left DashCon several months ago due to medical reasons. Neither Cain nor myself approved those descriptions, rather believing that the description approvals by others could be trusted.
So it wasn't their fault, they just didn't notice this.
>Overlooking the detail of reading each description myself is inexcusable, and I can only promise that we do better next time.
Okay, that's a bit better.
>In the very beginning, we were using numbers that were gathered through an RSVP-style poll. For a first year convention, much of the initial information is based on informed guesses.
> I still stand by the estimate that we’d have reached about 3000 if things had gone as planned.
You planned for 2k walk-ins?
>We actually didn’t tell the Indiana Convention Center that we only expected 2000 in attendance. The person who did our RFPs actually copied the number we used for this year’s convention (from around April 2013) when scouting out locations for 2015. I called this number into question, but I was told that it just needed to say something and the number on the RFP wasn’t really all that important. It bothered me at the time, but that number has played no role in our actual planning for 2015.
Another invisible scapegoat. Note the misleading language, it played no role in planning for 2015. They still mislead the 2014 vendors.

>Former Admin & WTNV:

I have very little control over what others say and do. She was going off of the information that we knew and had made available when the convention ended. Since the press release, she has since rescinded her statements. Source: [x]
So you threw someone under the bus based on (according to x, see link) emaisl that were "discovered" (aka the con admin SOMEHOW DID NOT SEE)
Where the fuck was all your communication?
>Cain and I have barely been home for 24 hours, and we spent the vast majority of today doing internal damage control, including the writing of the very long press release that we posted tonight. The raffle will happen within the week. I’m sorry for the delay, but it hasn’t been forgotten.
Wuh wuh
I can't wait for the raffle.
>We have no right to speak to what was or was not done with rewards for this campaign, but I will attempt to reach out to DashCon’s former associates who were in charge at the time to try and get this question answered.
So you profited off an Indiegogo run by invisible people who are to blame for all of this, and you had no idea this was happening Wow, much competence.
>The fact that someone changed rule 21 during the event has no bearing on the fact that rule 25 states: “The Schedule is subject to change at any time, even during the convention.”
I can't. I don't even know what rule 21 was but I have no idea why I should trust these people at this point.
So here you have it. Dashcon taking responsibility == blaming invisible people for everything, except not looking over the panel descriptions more, which was CLEARLY the main problem with this convention.

And what's even the point of more of these threads? Con's over, we have the statements from most parties. I mean, there should be more threads if there are new developments, but seems pretty barren at this point.

Apparently a few issues still need resolving and I suppose we're waiting to see how the "contact us before the 19th for a refund" will go.
I guess there also is some kind of perverted hope that legal troubles will follow.
And sorry for the off topic anon.

Hell no, then I gotta take care of it. I just want a sister with not to many age difference (I hate little kids). Maybe around 10 or 11 years old or something. So I can be her onee-san and teach her the ways of being kawaii.

I just realize that 10/9 years difference still is a big age gap. But it isn't as big as say having a baby sister or a little one of 3 years old.

It's possible if each person got their own room. Don't know what the rates were that weekend...but I couldn't find any major events going on that weekend that would have a hotel jack up their prices.

So I picked a Thursday through Monday date to get a rough idea of what the cost would be at the hotel where the convention was. I also went ahead and picked two rooms instead of three.

Of course. That isn't the hotel WTNV stayed at. They stayed at a hotel IN Chicago so their rates were probably higher. So I picked three hotels of different prices that were also owned by Marriott.

Granted, WTNV could have stayed at a different hotel chain, another day than I am assuming, one more expensive, or booked three rooms instead of two. Who knows.

But it isn't hard to rack up a $2,000 hotel bill.

Its still a lot for a first year con to do.

...hotel prices depend on location and quality. I'm not sure what you're getting at, anon.

If you started up a new con in Monterey California...prices are going to be outrageous there too for a first year con. First year con has nothing to do with it. We shouldn't be surprised that a Chicago hotel is pricey.

If you want to make an argument in defense of DashCon and against WTNV you should be saying, "DashCon got screwed a bit when WTNV decided to stay in Chicago. They should have gotten a hotel in Schaumburg where it would be cheaper."

>> No.7693432

We're in autosage, new thread here

>>7693430

>> No.7693443

>>7693431
To add on...

If anyone apart of DashCon was smart and actually had experience in a business setting where companies pay for travel expenses, DashCon should have tried negotiating in the beginning with WTNV.

"We are wanting our guests to stay at the hotel the convention is at as we have a relationship with that hotel. However, if you wish to stay at a hotel of your choosing, we are willing to comp the price up to what it would have cost you had you stayed at Renaissance." They could have asked how many rooms WTNV would be be needing and returned with the total price of what it would have been at the Renaissance.

A pretty reasonable request.

But of course it is so painfully obvious that no one at DashCon has an understanding how how businesses work, event planning, and negotiating. That or they don't have the business mindset and rather try to be everyone's friend which means saying yes to everything.
