Welcome to the larp thread V2.0 feels edition!
Here we will discuss Feels and euro Vs. american larps as normal!

so aside from those two Post;

When your next larp is:

any new gear acquisition:

What you would like your dream kit to be:

larps you look forward to attending in the future(not necessarily your next larp) and what you hope to expect.

have fun! and remember, your here forever!

Pictures didn't come out as well as I would've liked, but Ill pick through them and post the good ones from the wedding.

I've thought about this, and my current idea is to buy an inexpensive pair of shoes (thrif tstore?) with sturdy and unassuming soles. Remove the uppers and then attach your turn-shoe or other style of shoe to this.

It would be best to work with a pair of shoes where the upper is stitched to the sole like some boots or sandals are.

>turnshoe pattern.

Isn't that always the case. Your duchess is rather elegant and I love the dagging on her dress (cloak?) and how well it matches the points on her crown! More pictures please.

I believe it is part of the dress where as the green is an undershirt. And yes she is, her and her husband(Sir Nigel Underwood) try their best to be as historically accurate as possible, and she is a very nice lady.

That could just be me and having an odd sort of liking towards her due to her being Queen when I joined.

hey man, ill hook yah up. i just got this, and its fucking fantastic, all the rings are either solid, or riveted, super super sturdy, which really surprised me considering the price was so low, probably due to the fact some of the rings are just fabricated washer type things(which is awesome because they wont split) and that also technically makes it historically accurate. they have tons of selection, the only problem with them is shipping is a bitch, and they also take a Ridiculously long time to make it. took me like 6 weeks to get mine.

So yeah, I was the guy from the previous thread who's going to be at Bico 2015. I think I'm going to ask for some DIY stuff. For example, How could I go on about etching metal? I have a dremel and I know there's some etching heads, just don't know if they work on steel/aluminium and brass. I'd like to also learn how to make my own coat of plates kinda like the one pictured. I have good access to metal sheets of any kind, mainly alluminium. Would it work well? What kind of leather should I go for, and where to get it, most importantly. Also, any good site with lots of DIY larp resources? I changed my mind with the kit and I'm going with something more plain, like the pic. Found a pretty good german site for LARP weapons but the armor pieces are kinda meh. Still gonna order the chainmaile hauberk from them.

also etching metal with the right etching head is not a problem.

You will find in the link a howto for a brigandine, coat of plates are like that but waaay more simple. Not the guy you're answering to buuuut... Isn't butted (assuming you don't mean butted AND welded) chainmaille pretty frail in comparison to both welded (cheap-ish, non-accurate but sturdy) and riveted chainmaille (costs a kidney, accurate and sturdy)? I'm planning to buy a long sleeved hauberk and I think I will go with welded, but I'm not sure the one I intend to buy (from a german LARP store too, probably even the same site) is welded or butted. I should probably ask them in a mail.

Riveted will always last longer and look nicer than butted maille, howvere I have friends who are long time LARPers who have had a decent butted set for a while and they have only lost a few rings over the years.
Badly made butted will just shed links, especially around the armpits, that's why I went for a set that had riveted armpits.
Can't comment on welded stuff, as I have never seen any for sale or anyone wear a set.

Last event I wore my friends chain for roughly 3 hours over a 4 day event, so it's not as if it's going to be taking a complete beating.
This is purely the cheap option since I have an event in a weeks time, and can't afford to dump £300+ on chain yet :D

I thought that too, especially as they had bought Wolfsknopf and Hammerkunst years back... Well, there's a reason we still call it Mülltolon.

Let's hope you're lucky with the shirt, sometimes they do manage to put out decent stuff. If you're looking for a new one at some point, check out the Zeughaus, they tend to have nice riveted maille for around £200 (also in aluminium if you're lazy).

I am pretty interested in later medieval garb. I want to restart a mercenary company - while it wont be possible to go all landsknecht, we want to be more flashy and fashionable than the typical medieval grunts with two colored tabard.

So I am interested in stuff that fits the bill as inspiration.

If you want something fix blade and modern, for really cheap. get a mora, if you want something period-ish, and still really cheap, get "this" mora

I'd say for the green areas probably cotton or linen, If you don't plan on quilting it like what the character has then I would go for linen as it breathes better. Most definitely use linen for the head wrap.

As for the boots and gloves, best bet would probably be deer skin, just dye it a bit of a darker colour.

youll only need half of a hide if that for the chest armor, and 10oz will work fine. for the bracers, 10oz will also work, but for the shoes i would try for something arround 3-5oz leather(excluding the sole) i cant help with fabric though.

Hmm well it would depend on if you are planing on wearing it for cosplay or larping. For larping I would suggest all natural fibers (due to heat/cold factor). For cosplay you could get away with less expensive fabric with more texture (texture good!).

Larping: Pretty much wool or linen for both green tunic thing and brown vest thing. Although the vest looks like it could be suede as well?

For cosplay any sort of heavy (non-shiney, non-cheap looking) fabric could work. Based on the texture of the green I would go with a finely waled cor dory or an upholstery weight velvet (which is far coarser then other velvet). Some roughed up canvas would work too. The brown vest really looks like suede to me, so you could use a faux suede or moleskin/peachskin (with the lining or interlining providing structure).

Either way you need to quilt the collar and skirt like portion of the tunic to make it stiff like that.

Also I would add a support to the green collar, maybe wire, rigilene boning. I like to use the plastic tubing they sell for ice makers in my hoopskirts. It's inexpensive and could work.

For the sash I would buy one of those inexpensive pashima scarves and add the red end and tassels. Will look so much more legit then something made of cotton.

And as a bonus here is my favorite tassel tutorial, it's easy and looks so much better then just folding and tieing a tassel.

Most larps will not allow wooden shields, and the ones that do will require substantial padding. No larp will allow the Rawlings, no matter how much foam you put on them. The metal armour is variable, based on the rules of the game (some larps dont allow metal helms, some don't allow elbow or knee armour etc) and if your armour has edges that will chew up the weapons.

>>7698612
Depends on the larp rules, the armours construction/quality/materials and the individual.

>>7698612
For just a hauberk, that is a little over weight. A hauberk with 3/4 arms that goes to just about your knees should be more in the 45ish range. 14g is actually a little thick.

>Would my stamina need to be more than what I am doing for HEMA
no, not really. larps just games so being physically fit is not a must have although it helps a lot

> Could you explain how the combat works as more of an average Larp
as it was said before every larp is different every one of them has a different approach.
But the VERY basic idea that you have to hit the other guy with your weapon in a way that you don't injure him but he will notice.
Some places allowes light taps, some allow harder hits.
usually you are allowed to hit the guy anywhere except the head and groin area. Sometimes there are more restrictions, like hands or breasts for girls, or anything under the knee, etc

And then there is the "when to die" thing. It's either some kind of hit point system or you play out everything to the best of your knowledge. And everything inbetween those two.

around the US the hitpoint system is kind of popular where every weapon has a different damage and you have different amount of hitpoints based on other game mechanics. And you call out the damage otherwise the other guy won't know it. And sometimes you have character skills and stuff like that, that you have to "call" as in shout at the other. Like you hit him, say "disarm" and he has to throw his weapon to the ground (personally I think this is the lowest form of fight system but it has it's uses)

So why are European LARPers so much more dedicated than Americans?

>> No.7699805

>>7699797
it has TONS of reasons, but the main one is cultural differences, as in in the US it's not really popular to put a lot of effort into your hobby.
But there are a fuckton of other reasons too, one could even write a book or two about this.

and if anyone tell you it's because the US has shorter history than the EU countries then you can safely assume the guy don't know what the fuck is he talking about

>> No.7699830

I've been trying to learn all the LARP stuff I can from Europeans to bring cool shit over to American LARPs.

>> No.7699838

>>7699830
well another big difference apart from the behavior of peoples is that around the US in the nerd culture tabletop games are way more important than anything else, and that DnD is THE rpg. Everything is compared to DnD and there are literally more than enough people who doesn't even know other rpgs exist.
in extent larps in the us is usually not a live action role playing game but a tabletop rpg in real life.
You can clearly see this if you watch the rules, most of them are made similarly like tabletop games not realizing that larps are a completely different medium.

Also in the US there is no real distinction between larps and battle games like amtgard and dagorhir and stuff like that. If it has swords and stuff like that then it counts as a larp there

The biggest issue isn't larpers, it's landowners. My game has serious issues finding sites because the insurance companies the owners use hate headshots.

They don't fucking care what we do, and players are a mixed base-everything from complete fucking faggots to people who want full contact fighting-but landholders don't cater to larps (ours doesn't bring in money, commercial games are shit tier and litter), and insurance companies are absolute nazis.

Doesn't help that games like NERO cause some people to NEVER want to do buisness with a larp again.

>Could you explain how the combat works as more of an average Larp (or the most common way as you said they can vary).

Mix one of the letters with the numbers to get your basic variances of systems:

CONTACT SYSTEMS
A: Touch: Any contact with legal weapon edge. Think of a lightsaber
B: Positive force: forward transmitting force applied at contact
C: With intent: as with positive force, but the strike must be deliberate and unmistakeable. Think of "pulling your shots"
D: Full contact: Swing like its a real fight, but don't be a dick

RESOLUTION SYSTEMS
1: Hit points/damage: You do X damage, I need to be hit X times. Location of strikes mean nothing.
2: Zone/Level: Limbs have one hit, torso and head have two. Mass weapons and great weapons count as two hits etc.
3: naturalized translation: "that shot to the arm would have been a cut, but the blow to my head would have ended me, I'm dead by my honor"

Me, i like to bath with my friends ...nude under the sun, eyes locked into another man's eyes...

Slowly rubbing my spear with one hand while the other reach for behind my bathpartner's ear
''What is this!?''

Behind the ear was a CRT

This is how you bath in the river, hardcore mode

I agree with Frenadian, I went to the maritimes once, it was horrid. If you are interested in SCA, Ealdormere is nice as it is small enough that you can be friends with just about everyone. If not, I'd say Vancouver or Quebec.

How important would you it is to immerse yourself in the roleplay aspect?

Only experience I had doing that was playing Neverwinter Nights 1&2 online. Coming up with backstories for characters based on a setting and lore, adhering to their persona, etc. I wouldn't say it's entirely new to me, but I haven't had much practice acting in person.

but having a character is more fun, i suggest letting the game universe get into you before creating a definitive character, start as a commoner and look at what is happening, over time you will ''grow'' and become a character over the course of your ingame actions, and that a lot more fun than writing a immovable background

latex, made by another hungarian larpfag. The one who is always mixed up with me on the pictures. And I can't remember. Long time ago I thrown some money at him and bought a few liters of latex milk so he make me daggers, it's still from that batch

Is armor coverage and material functional to the ruleset for an event? If so how? Or is it all aesthetic?

Get yourself a leather awl to punch leather (really cheap to buy). I then use an embroidery needle (blunt tip) to sew it up. As a beginner I find it so much easier than using only a leather needle, I think you will too.
