The people who put on Dashcon were stupid. You CANNOT run a large convention with thousands of people in a large venue when you don't have any experience in running a convention. That takes a significant amount of money, staff and skill in various fields to pull off and even then shit isn't always going to go smoothly.

They should've just had a small con with maybe a couple hundred people in a small area of a hotel, maybe invite a couple guests, invite tumblr artists to come show/sell some of their stuff, encourage people to dress up, and have fun socially with fellow tumblrites. Then, if people enjoyed themselves, it will grow year by year into something larger. Just like any other grassroots anime or comic convention. But now they've shot themselves in the foot in a way they'll never recover from and the convention is now dead.

If someone told me I HAD to put on a convention for whatever reason, I would do whatever I could to find people with actual experience to help.

A friend of mine was actually the third panelist on this and has been kinda dickish about it. Basically saying "Everyone complaining wasn't there" and "Shut up, don't ruin the fact I had a good time". I usually have a lot of respect for her but what the fuck there's been more than one report of people crying and being upset and the vendors/artists got screwed over. YOUR fun doesn't change the fact that it was poorly organized, lacking in communication, and disgustingly unprofessional. YOUR fun doesn't change the fact that featured guests got fucked over. YOUR fun doesn't change the fact that the call for donations of $17,000 with the promise of refunds was so poorly executed that it really shouldn't be a surprise that people (including those who didn't attend) see it as a scam.

But yeah. All the shit that went down doesn't change the fact that you had fun. Good for you.

Yeah. When I say "Good for you if you had fun." I'm not being sarcastic at all. People SHOULD have fun at a con. No matter how small or all the problems with it.

The issue I have with a lot of these "I HAD FUN I DON'T CARE!" type people popping up is a lot of them are trying to use their experience to silence people who have legitimate complaints and concerns about the con.

I've seen a few posts on Tumblr now of people talking about all the fun they had and pictures and shit which is great! I am glad some people did have fun at DashCon. Best part is these few posts don't trash talk people who have actual complaints.

Really? A lot of the positive posts I read stated specifically that it's about their personal experience and that they personally had fun but were aware of some of the fuck ups but weren't directly affected by them.
Actually I see more postive posts admitting that some people might have had a bad time as I see negative posts admitting that some people might have had a good time.
In the end it doesn't really matter anyways, I'm just confused why people have an issue with some of the con attendees not having as bad as an experience as others.

Attendees who enjoyed the con shouldn't feel bad about having had a good time...but should understand that the "terrible things" that happened need to be resolved and addressed.

Which the people in charge of DashCon are not.

Having good intentions is a bit irrelevant when they are fucking over so many people and hiding from their responsibilities.

The admins or whatever definitely took on an endeavor that they couldn't handle. Which is unfortunate and hopefully a learning experience for them. They clearly don't have the organization or mindset to run such a thing.

But they are hiding from their responsibilities. They need to act like fucking adults and deal with all the issues that have been brought to light.

I did two LGBTQA panels. They weren’t perfect. The first one had an instance of a conflation between genitals and gender, and our trans panelist was not very up-to-date on proper terminology.

Just looked at this -- good post, I like that it's fairly neutral (not butthurt/defensive of Dashcon, not snarky and brimming with ballpit jokes) It's clearly by someone curious about events but not emotional or ready to defend.
The "unanswered questions" section at the bottom is really interesting to me because it points out that WTNV and Dashcon's versions of the story are actually blatantly different. I feel like Dashcon is fudging the arrival and departure time to cover their ass since as professionals WTNV seems less likely to lie about that.

It's not easy. Puberty was the worst time in my life. I've been suicidal about it in the past. I've been depressed about it often. I still have a mental disconnect with my physical body that is difficult to explain.

In high school out of desperation I presented and dressed 100% female. I tried to force myself to behave certain ways and look certain ways and dear god I never hated myself so badly. That's when I finally did try to kill myself but there were a TON of factors behind that attempt.

Though, because of all that, I actually avoid calling myself trans since I am not TRANSitioning. People who get to know me in real life...when they become close and comfortable in asking me "What's the deal?" I just explain I struggle with GID.

The Tumblr shit annoys me to no end. I think it is possible for trans people to be non-op/no-hormone...but having the disconnect between what your brain tells you and your body is the big thing here.

It's a medical condition.

With different TREATMENT options.

I can't imagine having this issue and doing absolutely nothing about it. I am sure it is possible, but even I...someone who is probably doing the bare minimum to cope couldn't do absolutely nothing.

Have a friend who after meeting two trans people suddenly became trans himself. It was so bizarre to everyone who had been friends with him for YEARS.

Won't bore everyone with the details as why we didn't believe him, but I made the mistake of asking some "truscum" folks on Tumblr for thoughts and advice on how to properly help him. He's our friend. We didn't want to be like "LOL we don't fucking believe you." We wanted to properly understand what was wrong and what is going on.

Unfortunately some tumblr-nutters found me and tried to rip me apart. I thought maybe /lgbt/ might be a bit better and the overwhelming amount of hate and shit that sounded like stuff I read on Tumblr...wow.

And you know what happened?

The guy found a quack who during his first therapy session said "I think you're trans" and agreed to sign him for hormone therapy. The second session he got the letter and he got HRT. We BEGGED him to see another therapist because that sounded sketchy as fuck. (btw so many people on tumblr/lgbt/ were so kind to call me a fucking gatekeeper for not just assuming he is and being okay with how quickly he got the stuff.)

He started taking it.

And wow, the description of "Going through a second puberty" is so goddamn spot on. And it was awful. It was awful to see what it was doing to him. Months went by and things just got so awful for him and then one day he quietly came to us and said, "I'm not longer going to transition." and he never spoke of it again.

also if you intend for a con to be a safe place for non-normative identities you hire real security and real admins who know what they're doing and aren't gonna have a mental fucking breakdown at the littlest thing to make sure shit goes smoothly. to insinuate it was a safe place merely because there were so few people in attendance isn't fair especially when they did expect a slightly larger crowd, one that would have definitely stretched the limits of their incompetent team

i truly do not think dashcon, a fan convention, was the place to be informative or interested with specific regards to social justice topics even if it had gone 200% better than the admins intended for it to go and i'm frustrated the writer of this post thinks it has anything to do with me hating their target demographic.
