As a long-time con organizer with moderate experience from different conventions, I'm dumbfounded by this mess. How can anyone in their right mind think $5,000 can pay for a congress center and a handful of GoHs? A starting, small convention with no connections whatsoever should start small and only keep community guests. Every successful convention starts as a small gathering and gradually expands to greater lengths as the people running it learn from their experience and gather more money from previous conventions. And above all, they know how to budget their resources. Sure, anyone would love to see their FAV ACTOR GOD OMG but you have to make compromises. And maybe someday your convention will be big enough for inviting them.

I've seen cons failing just like Dashcon, and they always have the same fatal flaw - they assume EVERYONE needs their convention and their awesome con has a huge demand and they will totally get 7000 guests and make a mint. When in reality they're falling victim to their skewed, narrow perspective. Last year there was a convention just like Dashcon, a tumblr-centered con, that had mostly tumblrfags running it. It had the same poor organizing, marketing and communication as Dashcon and ended up with a huge debt falling on the shoulders of the organizers.

Mostly it just has to do with the fact that the generic tumblr teens are so unstable, unorganized, unreliable and broke ass kids who couldn't organize a tea party for their toys.

I went to DashCon with my brother, and we decided to go to BDSM 101 for shits and giggles. It was disgusting, there were people getting off everywhere. They started off with some safety stuff you know? Then thEY DID A FUCKING DEMONSTRATION. We left when we saw someone who looked about 14 wanking next to us. It was horrific.

Sounds like one particular con I know. It was huge mess from start to finish. In the end most of the organizers (sans the head organizer) bailed the fuck out, leaving behind a large as fuck debt and couple lawsuits. One thing keeps bothering me about all of this is the location. I was really confused how a first year con ended up spending 17k on cost of space alone until I looked up the schedule and layout.

Rather than trying to book a cheaper and more reasonably small location for a first year event, they booked THE ENTIRE CONVENTION CENTER. Rooms are not even being used half the time or have no purpose for the amount of programming they had.

Something similar to Dashcon's $17k nonsense happened to a con I staffed at. Details are kind of fuzzy, it's been like a year, sorry.

Well, this way we hopefully won't have major cost overruns or overbookings, though really it's because not enough people are interested in doing panels again and we wanted some decent high-tier rewards.

Stretch goals are about as stupid though, again, not set in stone.
$300,000: Get the biggest ball pit we can find and stick it in the heart of the convention center.
$306,000: Honor everyone who saved us during the $17k fundraiser by commissioning a Dashcon trophy/plaque thing with everyone's names. It'll be easier than reimbursing the people who paid cash, who mostly didn't give names and emails, and is a nice touch of respect for them.
$360,000: Provide catering for all three days for the con.
$460,000: Try and get David Tennant/Matt Smith/Lauren Faust/John DeLancie to make appearances for autographs or something, paying for their expenses as well as appearance fee.

its called attrition rate. Hotel contracts often offer free or discount event space if you can fill a percentage of your room block (usually around 80%). If you are unable to fill the block you are on the hook to cover the cost of the unbooked rooms.

If the con thought they were getting 3k they probably had a huge block there was no way they could fill. I've seen similar things happen to other cons. Grossly misjudged attendance and had huge blocks. A hotel actually canceled one a few years ago because it was so far from reaching their block.

tbh i almost hope that dashcon actually happens again next year and it’s surprisingly well put together so aside from everyone’s quips about its target demographic it’s actually an enjoyable experience for people, mostly so that everyone who made all of those stupid shitty passive-aggressive tumblr posts gets to put their foot in their mouth

tumblr humor is really, really fucking uninspired and is almost aways centered around whichever embarrassing thing happens/someone does next until the op is shamed off of the site. at least 4ch has the benefit of anonymity and posts eventually go away/are archived and never really accessed again.

A loving atmosphere does not a good con make.

As for the BDSM security checks, there's so much conflicting information going around. If I was responsible for doing ID checks and heard that underage attendees were claiming to have been let in, I'd be pretty adamant that it didn't happen if only to save my own ass. Considering that DashCon is probably going to do everything they can to save face, it makes me hesitant to just take their word for it, especially when they don't have a track record of telling the truth.

Anyone who accepts Paypal as a form of payment from scam artists deserves to get swindled, anyway. The Paypal chargeback scam is notorious, and once the scammer does it, you're screwed.

Once you perform, you can't retroactively not perform and you've lost any leverage you have. But the scammer can reverse up to weeks later.

Originally I was told he was one of the con admins, but then was told he was only an attendee. Now it's been suggested that he IS staff of some sort because he "seemed to be acting in an official capacity" and was "the same guy who is present for the majority of the Dash for Cash videos and tells an attendee the money will go to charity in another, and is likely the guy markdoesstuff refers to in in his post saying everything would have been much better if he would have shut up."
