"And seeing all of this, that’s where I’m at. I don’t even want to go on my Facebook or Twitter or Tumblr anymore. Literally, panic attacks. And, I always tell people, “When it stops being fun, stop doing it.”

Has tumblr genuinely broken one of the cast members? Jessica works for Bioware, she should be used to criticism. Will she leave cosplay? Has the show changed cosplay forever?

She never minded the attention when it was positive and she was quoting herself everywhere on the internet for being so funny.

The entire group should be ashamed of themselves. They sold out for money and fifteen minutes of fame, and now that's biting them in the ass and that's when they choose to cry about it.

You know I partially blame yaya for this since she's the one who wanted to have her own show and this is what she gets. I know it's mostly syfys fault for the editting to make the cosplayers look bad but who was the one who get these people to film her in the first place? It's obvious that she doesn't have a manager of some sort and the show was going to be called Yayas World. You'd think that after the first season of the disaster wreck would just make them want to quit after hearing feedbacks but I guess some people will never learn. This is what happen if you're drunk on fame, you will do anything to get noticed without thinking of the consequences. Hope Yaya enjoy those 5 more seasons.

You're right. Everyone who signs the contract to be on a broadcasted TV show is completely blind-sided by the fact that they're on a national TV show.

Pretending like you live in a bubble where no one would ever criticize anything you do, and being a damsel because you face that criticism is childish. Instead of just saying, "man, fuck cosplay", she NEEDS to mention her sob story. I don't see what her mom having cancer (which sucks, I've been there) has to do with with her witty post not getting any weblawgs ;--; If a normal friend of mine acted like this I'd cunt-punt her to the moon.

We seriously put up with far more bs in the cosplay community because everyone's afraid that "it wont be fun" and "its just for fun!!". You're a person who cosplays. Being Cosplayer doesn't excuse you from otherwise selfish, arrogant behavior.

I'm sure not all companies are the same but it can be shit.
A friend of mine is doing CM for another company and he gets to fly to the US quite a lot for meetings, meet some pretty cool people that appear in the games, etc. His experience is totally different to mine as its a different company, but seems to be the high life to me.

Any examples?

Of the few reality shows I've watched, the drama always comes from either two people conflicting (which reflects badly on one of them) or someone's shortcomings/mistakes.

Sometimes it makes them look retarded, sometimes it makes you sympathise with them, depends on the editor and the person watching.
>Something went wrong
>it's difficult for person X fix
Either you sympathise with X, or they're incompetent, both set that person below the viewer. When they win/pull it together is when X becomes the hero...

What other ways to do reality shows force drama? I'm not trying to be a smartass, but that's the only way I ever see reality shows creating tension.

Lets look at the flower example there are 2 ways to spin that.

>Hey Look its my friend grant, he's going to show me how to use servos for my next project. Cool look they move.
>Oh no they broke i gotta call Grant again. Hey i packed up my tools for the flight could I stop by to fix that flower you helped me made.
>I'm busy tonight, but stop by before your flight in the morning we should be able to work it out.

Essentially the same conflict and resolution without sacrificing your subjects credibility.

What they did on TV was unfulfilling, hey we have a problem, its ok we have this guy the lay person watching the show is not going to recognize solve the problem for them, no growth of the character nothing the human can relate too.

This we have a human with a problem, seeking a solution and presumably off camera fixing it herself. Growth of a character, and get to call on a C-lister again.

They are calling them heroes, which gives the impression of grandeur and allure. What they give us is a hero's journey narrative that is not well done therefore unfulfilling.

>> No.7669781

>>7669683
Aaah, I get you. I thought that WAS how they spun it. So she just asked him to fix it?
Then you're right, that's her bad.

Unless they had planned the later break and fix she did, but I do believe there is some spontaneity in the show, can't know for sure as I don't work on it, haha.
But that was spun fairly poorly as well, right? Kinda defeatist, like it was all luck?
I don't think they could carry the series without showing the 'heroes' incompetencies, it's the nature of the entertainment (format and subject matter). Sometimes it makes you sympathetic, sometimes it makes them look retarded. That's reality TV

Heroes of cosplay is a really lazy word association. They can't guarantee a decent heroes journey on reality TV, on that I think we're agreed.

>> No.7669829

>>7669781
I'd agree in as much as I don't think they need too. What is a bigger conflict then the internal narrative while looking at the other costumes while you wait to get judged.

Tons of good reality TV shows have been based on concepts of low conflicts. Like the pickers or the storage people. Instead of forcing acts of god they just make all their conflict between people, rivalries. There is no human conflict besides the occasional spousal abuse. That doesn't seem too realistic.

Like what if the synthetic wool they bought turned out to be real? Instead of the moronic play though the pain hur dur let's use wool.

The costume contest should be half the show. With confessionals to the heroes during costumes that stand out to them as better or tough competition to them. Now that's suspense build up then release if they win. And more insight to other costumes that beat them.

That's the next problem they use the confessionals all wrong by using them as a summary. They should be using them as an emotional release for the heroes.

>> No.7669866

I believe (through other cosplayers I follow) that in season 1 there was more interpersonal rivalry and people hated it. Although I wasn't on /cgl/ then, might have been a different reaction here.
Or are you saying there should be no rivalries? Sorry, I'm not quite sure from the wording.

Referring to other shows, do Syfy make many reality shows? I've seen an episode of Monster man and some FaceOff (which is more of a game show but follows the same formula). Are they relatively new to this or should they have it down?

The recap thing I've noticed as a trend with American TV in general. There are a lot more ad breaks in American shows and so much time is wasted explaining shit to channel surfers.

But really, I think you ought to package up that last bit and send it to syfy because it would make for a far better show.
I started watching in the hope of learning things, as if it was a documentary series, so I was interested in the building. But for what it is that's a much better way of building tension. Still lets the 'heroes' come down to the viewers level, lets the viewer sympathise without the risk of seeming (as) retarded... Bravo

>I believe (through other cosplayers I follow) that in season 1 there was more interpersonal rivalry and people hated it.

The only interpersonal things in the first seawson was YaYa, getting upset by "slutty jessica" trying to corrupt her protege. and crab cunts leaving the chubby girl out of their group show cause they though she was better than her.

People tend to not do a good job figuring out why they don't like something, so the interpersonal conflict is blamed, but the reason is never explored. In the 2 examples i remember there is "a pot calling the kettle black" moment which is obviously bad.

The other one might have actually been good. If that caused the other one to come from behind. What they did instead was have us invest our emotions into the sub plot and not pay it off. Chubby one even started working out on the show they could have spun that at a revenge/rivalry thing against crabcunts. Then ultimately have that pay off when they see her next cosplay and go like damn (pretty woman style).

>Or are you saying there should be no rivalries?
If the show they want to make is a force conflict vanity show yes. Bring in Jessica have her and YaYa duke it out. As long as they remember to keep an emotional arc in mind while they cut they should not try to avoid it, and keep a focus on their craft and not just being bitches.

That being said I personally would prefer a combination learning/showing show. With my idea for the contest taking the second half and the first half being like a how to. or at least learning tools of the trade/ or exploring different aspects of the art of cosplay. With every season following a new group of people.

Cool, I must go back and watch the first season.

I've picked up one or two things from crabcunts, but my guess is they would lose (or at least they think they would lose) a lot of the more casual viewers if the show went in-depth, technically.

We can dream though...

Yeah it's pretty bad but in the first season crabcunts where actually the technical instructional group. But incompetence became the shows short hand because of it.

Yeah, I wish it were more focused on the cosplay and the awesome costumes than the inane, forced drama.

How are the two chicks who don't know how to use a sewing machine between them the technical instructional group?

They were the ones who actually tried out new techniques. work through them on camera. They didn't do it well, but i think they did it the most in the first season.

They were the the technical ones because production wanted them to be. Other than holly then sculpting bullshit creatures, all their skills are most amateur level.

Man, this fucking show.

I have to hide my power level among my co-workers. They were just discussing this show and they know that I'm into anime and cosplay culture, but I don't like this show because of the people in it.

So much secondhand embarrassment.

Except Seth is actually widely liked by the community and has been a legitimate, longtime participant of it.
