I would like to make a Venetian type mask, except I don't want to cover my face but I still want the mask to be on my head. Is it better to

>make a mask from scratch, or
>buy a plastic, plain white halloween costume mask thing and modify it from there?

I've only ever used polymer clay and air-dry clay in my life. A lot of mask making tutorials I found said to use plaster but I don't want to risk my mask melting away. The other tutorials that didn't use plaster said to use some special material but that's for casting a real mask custom fit to a person's face. Not what I'm looking for. The other tutorials suggested cardboard which is too flimsy.

Pic related, the have masks on their hair but I don't want that...clown..? joker? jester? tentacle-like things dangling off.

It should be a lot easier to buy a plain one to modify, though plain white halloween plastic ones will be too flimsy. And plaster doesn't melt, I used a ton for my Jack Frost staff and it's really sturdy too.

I've seen Akira's Helmet done a few times and I literally do not have the confidence in detailing to do the Skull.

Finding a regular base Black Helmet without bells and whistles seems a little difficult in the current market too...
