Please thread don't die before this get answered!
I have a washing and ironing question about the cosplay in pic.
The shawl is (what I believe is) 100% cotton, the see-thru fabric is (again what i think is) organza and the white dress that you can't really see underneath the organza is white bridal satin. How do I go about washing each of them and Ironing them to get the wrinkles out? I was going to hand-wash the organza and bridal satin and hang to dry then use dry iron on low with a towel in between the iron and the fabric (or if I can get to my mom's friends store I might be able to use her garment steamer) for the cotton shawl I was just gunna throw in with a load of whites and iron on medium
thanks for the tips
Forgive the horrible picture

So, I know you're supposed to cut hair vertically for a natural look, but I don't think that works for the girl I'm cosplaying. I'm a total newb with wigs so can anyone tell me how I'd go about cutting/styling a wig like pic related.

I'd say hand washing in cold water with a delicate detergent is a fairly safe bet. Just be sure to wash them separately in case the colors bleed. As for ironing, most irons have a heat guide, but you can always use a setting lower if you're not sure. Always, ALWAYS clean your iron first! Some fabrics leave a residue on the iron and that can turn to burned up grossness that gunks up the iron and sticks to the next thing you iron!

I'm wondering what I should make the gold parts out of? I have an unused bucket of plaster of paris to make a mold but I don't know what the gold parts themselves should be made from. Obviously not real gold. I was also thinking of making the shirt out of rayon. Also what's the name for metal loops in belts? (I highlighted them in blue)

Any general contact lens advice? I'm new to wearing them and I just want to make sure to keep some things in mind. Like I hear you shouldn't keep them in for more than eight hours, for one.
Mine are from EyesBright if that counts for anything.

I actually wore them today, on a very hot and sunny day. With the hot sun beating down on my eyes with contacts on them, probably a dumb question, but would that have affected them somehow? One almost felt dry by the time I took it off, though this was after six hours while also being out in the sun, so I'm guessing any longer, with the lack of moisture in my eyes, probably would start to hurt, right?

As for pic related, I have recently acquired funds to really focus on cosplay, and ive decided this one will be my first 'real deal' one i make. From scratch on everything possible. but I have a few questions:
1. Does anyone know of any good patterns for a suit coat and pants? And what fabric would be best for making it in a green without being complete shit?
2. I want to make a giant lollipop, preferably something made out of resin. It would have two different colors in it, and I was wondering if I would have to paint those colors on after casting it or if there is a way to color it while its in the mold. (im assuming not, but figured id ask) And if anyone would know how much an approx. 16"dia x 1 1/2" thick piece of resin (possibly larger dia.) would weigh, if that would even be possible to make? Resin is not your best option for a large prop. Carve it out of foam, prime the foam so it'll take paint, paint, then seal it off. Unless you're mass producing the end product, casting anything just gives you a lot of unnecessary work.
Google "mens suit sewing pattern" and look though results for a matching pattern. You can either buy online or write the number down and see if a local joanns/hobby lobby carries it and then sit tight until that baby goes on sale.

I'm currently gearing up to do my first cosplay (which I'm sure I'll tweak more post-con because I'm a perfectionist) and I'm trying to find a pair of knee-high boots for a Lon'qu cosplay. Problem is, I have big calves (17" circumference) and large feet (I wear a size 12).

I found a basic pair on Amazon, but because I'm somewhat of a manlet I'm afraid they'll be less "knee-high" and more "over the knee" if I order the large size, especially since the measurements aren't exactly detailed on the listing. Anyone have any experience ordering these before in any size? I'm thinking worst-case scenario I can trim the top part of the leather down before adding the fur, but it's still a $50 investment I'd be modifying.

Personally, I really dislike when people make fabric ears. It works a little better when they go full dog (black nose, tail, etc) but I still wish they would work harder to make the fabric ears come out from under the hair so it looks like the ears are sprouting from the head, not just pinned on top of the hair. You're right about fur being superior over fleece/felt since the hair on Isabelle's ears are the same as her bun and bangs, as it would be on a dog.

Still, that would be the reasons that I prefer I prefer clip-in pigtails over ears. Pic related. I see most girls wearing a bob wig and clipping in the pigtails (or ears) over that, but I had planned to make my own Isabelle with a ponytail wig and clipping the pigtails to that. It would look like three pigtails, just like that silly default hairstyle in Wild World.

This is one of Arda's Jeannies that has been re-positioned to the top of the head. I'm not sure if she just used the shorter stub that Jeannie comes with or if she cut short a clip-on ponytail. I would put clip-in pigtails on the side of this. I kind of like loose hair rather than a bun, since I've interpreted her roundness as curls or volume. Her pigtail ears have a similar roundness, so it makes sense to me. It'd also be easier to do a dip dye if you wanted the very top to be darker for accuracy.

Alternatively you could use a double ponytail wig and clip the bun or ponytail on top, but I think that'd be a little harder to do.

I hardly see the bangs done well either. People either give up and give her side bangs, a side part, a middle part, straight bangs, or straight bangs fully clipped to each side. She has loose bangs parted down the middle, which is kind of awkward. I think it'd read best as basically two side bangs. IE you'd need to angle the cut shorter at the middle of the forehead and longer at the temples. This girl cut hers like this, but I think her bangs could use more fluffiness. You could probably do that by leaving the bangs longer and then teasing them. Or maybe teasing first and shape them afterwards. I haven't looked enough into fluffy bang styling.

The girl I posted up here >>7650040 is a good way to clip, since I like how she pointed the ends rather than clumping it entirely to the side. I can't tell if she just molded the ends or if she thinned them out.

Another note, if you went the ponytail-wig-with-clip-pigtails route, you could make the base wig a lighter yellow, dip dye the ponytail the dark yellow, and have the pigtails be the dark yellow too. You wouldn't have to fiddle with clip in bangs in that case.

Sailor Moon has those same silly bangs, so checking out (good) tutorials for her wig would be a good idea. Since she's so commonly cosplayed, there should be some good resources out there. But for the same reason, there are lots of bad resources. So you'd have to sift through some overly simplistic tutorials.

Alright, those are all my thoughts about Isabelle's wig, but I'm just as annoyed as you are on the fabric. If it helps, a wide checker like that is called a buffalo plaid, while smaller checkers would be gingham. I've thought about sewing together the plaid myself. If you find something good, please share!

I don't think the bangs are the same though. Usagi's bangs curve out from the hairline and then back to touch the forehead, leaving almost a complete circle of space between the two. Issabella's don't give that impression at all. Usagi wigs are also almost always done wrong and the bangs are hardly ever done right. You can tell the different between the musical wigs and almost any cosplayer to see.

In general, you cover foam armor with plasti dip or something similar, which is basically a rubber coating in a spray can. This not only serves as a base so you can paint on it (otherwise it absorbs paint and takes a lot of coats), it hardens it so it won't be flexible enough to put over your elbow.

I don't know the source material but it looks like it's supposed to be made out of cloth.

I've been working on Wander from Shadows of the colossus for the past few months now, made more progress in the last month though than anything. I'm to the point now where i'd like to add the detail that he has around his sleeve there. He also has some around his chest and it also goes up and over his shoulder. I have yet to find anything that can show it. I'ved tried looking at the ps3 version of the game to give me a better idea but even then, keep the camera steady for a few seconds..good lord. It's also impossible to see what's going on detail wise under his cloak thing. I ended up looking at a few cosplayers to get an idea of how the pieces should look under the cloak but for the smaller details, that's another story. It varies greatly. I tried to dowload Dormin editor as per one of the cosplayers recommendations. It's a shit ton of computer programming that will eventually let you see all the models of the game. Posted in the prop help thread but no response.
I'm a total newbie to prop making, but I'm really solid with deconstructing figures into 2D shapes, so I recreated the whole thing with cardstock, and my friend told me i'd be able to coat the paper with fiberglass cloth and resin in order to make it look good. I'm sitting here with the model, and I don't really know what to do next though.
Besides an idea of where to start, I have a few questions:
Will it be secure enough incase someone bumps into it? It won't happen a lot since I'm behind an AA table and the convention is known for being super spacious, but I know it's going to happen .
Will the texture turn out alright? I plan on spray painting it afterwards, but my biggest worry is that it just ends up looking like... paper. Is there any chance of this turning out okay? (If not, suggest alternatives, and at least now I have a pattern to work with?)

I personally get all my contacts for cosplay from Pinky Paradise (and I also ordered once from Honey Color).

Both websites are reputable, the lenses come with a seal of authenticity and there's reviews you can check out.

Now, I'm not sure if I've seen lenses that are close to what you're looking for, but I think I have seen some blue lenses with some yellow/gold in them (they were pretty natural looking though). PP does carry some out there/cartoony designs though, so take a look in their cosplay section.

I live in Canada as well, so no worries about shipping.

One last thing: if you haven't seen an optometrist about contacts, please do so. I ordered mine first (since my prescription is stable) and took them with me to the optometrist. She had me put them in and made sure they weren't going to scratch the shit out of my corneas. So not only will you be protecting your eyes, you'll also have a peace of mind.

PS: props on the character choice, I hope to cosplay Jibril myself at some point.

Get eye drops for your contacts. As long as there's no burning or serious redness, keep wearing them a few day a week for a few hours and your eyes will get used to them. It's probably not the sun and just your eyes not being used to them yet. Especially if they're cosmetic contacts with any enlargement. Your eyes have to adjust and you need drops to re-wet them. Visine makes one that also helps keep them cleaner while wearing them.

When you wear them for a con, pack your glasses if you have them (I wear prescriptions), solution and you lens case. When you get the chance after a few hours in the con, take them out, clean them and either let your eyes rest or pop them back in if you feel confident in extended wear. If you aren't confident with it, just let your eyes breath, use some drops and drink water.

It depends on how good you are at making props, and how badly you want to be this person. 130$ (I'm assuming more for you due to shipping) is only a little overpriced, although it's difficult to tell the materials/how sturdy it is.

Get a regular 2-way stretch pattern, make a mockup and adjust it to your size. You'll have to do it anyway if you want to get the fit right. The pattern will probably get you to choose if you want maximum stretch widthwise, or lengthwise. Since your fabric will stretch both ways you can still use the same pattern, but will either have to take it in or shorten it depending on how you lay it on your fabric (with the grain or perpendicular to it). I hope that makes sense; it shouldn't be too hard.

My friend is going to be doing wushu modern arts in the Zuko (Avatar) boots we worked on. I modded them from thigh high to under-the-knee and they look pretty good, but he says they reeeeaaally need more grip on the soles or else he'll be accidentally doing the splits and other potentially dangerous slip-ups. His actual wushu shoes are kinda ribbed and rubbery, almost sticky instead of the plastic on the boots we got.

Is anyone experienced with dying fabric? A coat I made for a cosplay is a light bright red, and I'd like to dye it a bit darker. Are dyes made to be used only on white fabric? First things is dyes work differently with different fabrics. What fabric is your coat made of?

As long as it's not synthetic, or mostly synthetic, then basic color theory takes over. If you have blue fabric, add yellow, you get green. So if you have red, use a darker red, you'll get a much darker red.

I had a ita bodyline dress from when I was ~13 that I have no use for, and I want to cosplay Chii from Chobits, She wears some similarly ita stuff and it could be cute. Pic related.
What do you think?

I'm working on Lissandra from LoL.
She has dark crystals near her feet and the way I'm planning to do it is making each crystal out of polycarbonate, lining it with cellophane, then putting an LED in some of them

My question is: what's the best adhesive for gluing polycarbonate to intself?

I have pretty much those exact measurements and I'm usually fine with a medium. If it's a skirt/dress that isn't tight on the hips then then I guarantee you M will be fine. If it's pants, you'll probably have to ask the seller because the the length can cause trouble if you go a size up.

Okay, I just need confirmation here before I potentially fuck up and waste time and materials.

For pink insulation foam pieces, you coat in layers of PVA glue, THEN you can add bondo for filling holes and resin hardeners for strength?

I've lurked a ton of RPF threads and this seems to be the case, I know Volpin uses urethane casting resin to seal, but I'm on a budget. I just need a sanity check!

Do thin layers over sections, mix about a golfball size of Bondo at a time, any more and it'll get too tough to spread as you try to use it all. Don't glob thick layers on, thin in multiple passes is best. Oh, and Bondo clogs sandpaper like nothing else, so be prepared.

It's cosplay with stuff from your closet. e.g. a sheet for a cape instead of making a cape. You could buy a toga from a costume shop or get some fabric and a pattern from a store and make it yourself. For the staff, get a wooden dowel, carve styrofoam for the head and attach them, the cover it with plaster, scruntch it up to give it a wooden look. The silver arm bands can be made with worbla, or bought online, even if you need to spray paint them silver. Buy some fabric for the hat and cape, the hat looks easy, but look up some good cape sewing tutorials, make sure the neck area is puffy.

Yeah. Its pretty straightforward. Now the question is do u want to be authentic/realistic? or are u all about getting the shape? reality cloth doesnt work like that and u would need a custom shaped cloak. Other wise you could use about a 4:1 ratio of hight to width rectangular cloak.

begin by wrapping around your head at the end.
Fold the end peice into the underside touching your head.
Next repeatedly wrap the remainder around were you folded the end piece until it is tightly around your head and there is no fear of the tail popping out.

And there you have it! In this particular image the cloak is actually slumped over his shoulder then continues to fall. If you want the breezy look the image has simply incorporate wire to hold the position
