Do you think cosplay should be incentive to catch up on a series' manga? Should a person expect to be spoiled? (Warning: Spoilers inside)

I think they do because fans of the series might come up to them and ask them for their thoughts on the manga / latest chapter. It's a little embarrassing for the cosplayer to then say 'oh, I've only seen the anime'.

Shit.

Well that settles it. I'm sticking to video game cosplays (what the hell, my autocorrect changes "cosplays" to "violated") so that I don't look like an idiot 24/7.

I was Princess Bubblegum at a convention once (I'd gotten into Adventure Time recently and had only watched the first three seasons) and a Lemongrab ran up to me quoting something from a later episode. I bantered at him the best I could manage, but he may have cottoned on to me not knowing all of the extensive AT archive.

There was a chick in one of the MSPA threads a while back who'd lost her arm in an auto accident and was looking to cosplay a character who had her arm blown off, so it's not unheard of.

Though with the level of shoop already in OP's photo, yeah, computer magic.

The thing is, even if I have seen a series its usually a fair bet I'm not going to know fucking every small thing about it in incredible detail.

If I was cosplaying Spike from Cowboy Bebop and a Cowboy Andy showed up I probably wouldn't recognize him honestly. Which would be awkward as shit. Its just how it is, you can't be expected to know all the ins and outs of a series off the top of your head.

>> No.7632646

Definitely catch up with all the source material if you're cosplaying from a series. Beyond assholes who'll try to quiz you on the spot, there are a lot of people who are just looking to talk about the game/show/manga/whatever and understandably see cosplayers as good people to talk about the material with.

>> No.7632681

I was at a con, waiting around in the hotel lobby and two girls were talking next to me. They had complimented my cosplay of Ymir from snk earlier and they were whispering not so quietly and glancing over at me and asking each other "if I even read the manga".
Turned around, casually commented that I would have if Ymir was still alive to read it because she ran off and is probably dead now tbh and they shut up.

>> No.7632765

I read up on snk because I was afraid of seeing walking spoilers at a recent con plus I was cosplaying from that series so I didn't want to be chatted up into a spoiler. My surprise was that most of the ppl who talked to me was casual fans of the anime and our convo went along the lines of:
> guy runs up to me - "OMG I LOVE THIS SHOW. YOU ARE LIKE SO COOL"
> "Thanks :)! I really like it too!"
> "Any news on when season 2 is coming out?"
> "Umm..nope! Sorry! I haven't heard any news."
> "Aww...well that's too bad, it's getting so good!"
> "Yeah but if you really can't wait then read the manga because it's really really good too!"
> "...oh...I didn't even know there's a manga for it..."
> "Um...yah! You should definitely give it a try if you like the show!"

I don't usually initiate conversation at cons with strangers so to be fair I didn't go up to ppl to start a convo about it, I'd ask for a picture but that's the extent of me initiating any sort of talking. I guess I'm just surprised at how many ppl talked to me as if I was some ambassador for the show (so many ppl asked me about when season 2 was coming out :\) and most of them seemed to know so little despite telling me how much they love the show - I mean I consider myself pretty casual in terms of the fandom.

The only thing keeping me into SnK is that sometimes I get really vivid dreams where I'm using the 3d maneuver gear and it's really fucking fun

I think the best reason for catching up on a series is the character interactions, photoshoots, and poses you can do. You won't be limited to only the earlier parts so you can fully explore the kind of pictures you want to take. It's not like you have to remember everything off the top of your head, you can easily take your time and search parts you want to recreate, what poses they're doing, what characters they are with, and/or any outfit details that might have changed or been added.

I know there's fuss about the material of the jackets/capes and the quality of the belts, so where would you guys recommend purchasing the outfit from? Which sites or retailers do you think work best?

I'd make the jackets out of stdnard waterproofed military drill (Like any M65.) and the capes/rain coat things out of a weatherproofed thin suede/leather.

But then I'm a faggot for realism and it'd cost a fortune.

if you havent watched and read the whole series you shouldnt be cosplaying it.

Jessica Nigri does this all the time.i really hate her Curly Brace from Cavestory, pic related.

Also 99% of people who cosplay Game of Thrones have only watched the series and hardly know the names of who theyre cosplaying. I swear if I have to see a "Khaleesi" Cosplay one more fucking time. Its fucking Danaerys Targaryen. And on top of that Emilia Clark does a shit job of potraying Dany, Why does everyone like her? Most people know people by their nicknames. Tyrion is "the imp, or that midget guy." Jaime is "the guy with no hand that fucks his sister". Robb is "DA KING IN DA NORF". Jon snow is "you know nothing". and Ygritte is "that horny redhead"(whos actor butchered her part)

Same, like it would make no fucking sense for the jackets to be leather as they're short on livestock.

If you cosplay Cowboy Bebop and don't know about bang then your should really kill yourself. Either than that go ahead cosplay all you want. Its the really important stuff that matters anyways.
