Eh yeah, almost. The strawberries on the print are realistic ones while her bag is pretty cartoon-y, doesn't match well at all. She should have used a brown bag with brown and red hair accessories (instead of a flower crown when there aren't even flowers anywhere else) to bring out and balance the brown in the print and her shoes. A white blouse with some red accents would have been much less overwhelming.

Not that anon, but Jae was in our comm for a few weeks, and made an "Is this lolita?" post about her Hizaki cosplay. (Should have been our first clue...) She kept making "I found a dress online! It's not so much taboo as distracting, some people dislike it because it looks messy and clashes with whatever dress you're wearing. Consider that this is a fashion where girls will change their hair colour (ie-wear a wig) so that their hair doesn't clash with the colour of their dress. Things like facial piercings and tattoos can look really out of place with some of the sweeter, softer coloured styles. I think if you coordinated your clothes to the colour of your tattoos you might hear less complaints, otherwise, expect a few gripes here and there if you decide to display them.

Probably because most mainstream fashion patterns don't use so much fabric for the skirt. I started learning how to sew with basic Burda and Simplicity patterns and even their 'wide' skirts use less than 2 meters. Then I read somewhere that a lolita skirt should be ~3x your waist measurement which for me is a little under 2 meters, so I thought that was fine.
Just yesterday I made a skirt with 2.5 meters and holy shit it looks so much better over a petticoat, I'm never going back!

I really did not want to get involved with this, but I can't resist a challenge.

Thing is... I don't think this skirt is unsalvageable. Granted, I'm talking about the original Stella Jean piece and not the cheaper-than-cheap knockoff. There was actual craftsmanship and thought put into the original - the zebras are hand-painted and sequined, and the fabric is bridal-quality silk. It's definitely not my style, but I don't think it's objectively bad - but it will never, ever work for lolita or otome, and probably not for any j-fashion. It really only works when it's worn the way it was meant to be; with exquisitely crafted high fashion pieces. This outfit costs 4,135 goddamn dollars. And that's assuming the blouse is on sale.

IMO (different anon) it isn't just the fact that they're flats, but teaparty style shoes specifically. There are very few classic style outfits those work for, mostly in the vain of IW style sweet-classic borderline coords. There are certainly flats you can wear in classic and get away with, but I think those maryjanes have to have fewer frilly details such as the maryjanes IW has on their site right now, or ones with a less rounded toe, or something like that that adds a bit of maturity to the style of the shoe. Think those JM strappy shoes or the similar VM strappy flats. Brogues/flat oxfords can work too but it really depends on the outfit, imo, and I know for a lot of lolitas they're always a no (I just think they make your calves/ankles look unflattering). Pic related, other than the specific styles I mentioned, I think things like this can be more classic-appropriate than TP style shoes without being heeled* (speaking generally, not saying these shoes would look good in that coord).

That all said- for an outfit like the one being talked about, I do think you need more extravagant, elegant footwear to go with it. It's like wearing flats with a gala gown- they don't match in tone at all. I think the color is throwing them off too, if they were white I don't think it'd be quite as off.

The thing is a heel instantly matures the shoe, so a lot of the details you could get away with on a heeled shoe and still be elegant/classic looking might lean sweeter on a flat shoe, ie florals or scallops.

I agree. My deal is that I don't care if they have the most detailed depiction of the crucifixion blazed across the dress. My annoyance is that by putting on the crown and halos, they are dressing AS Jesus, Mary, etc. That makes me uncomfortable.

I think a slight heel always looks better than flats, even in sweet. They elongate the leg and make you look thinner. That said, I was mostly pointing out that those shoes are too childish/sweet for the dress.

Summarized my feelings well. Shoes with a less rounded toe, fewer criss crossing straps, less frilly detail, etc. look more mature and are more suitable for classic.
VM and antaina (probably altered VM replicas) also make cute short boots with varying heel heights that look nice, and I like the idea of brogues with a small heel in classic.

Tea parties have no place in a classic coord and just look ridiculous. Hell, they even look off in many more toned down sweet coords.

Also, the big rings and oversized wrist cuffs look childish and misplaced to me. Like I said in the original post, this might not be ita, but it's borderline for me. Like >>7604915 said, this dress is gorgeous, and everyone seems to be turning out shit coords with it.
