Fanime isn't really known for it's panels and Guests of Honor.

It's definitley a "Cosplay Big or go Home" convention.

It has:
a. room parties.
b. Or swap meet (which has an arguably better selection of goods than the dealers hall imo).

I've been in California for a year and a half now, but this is my first Fanime. I've been to Anime Expo, Anime Overload, Japan Expo, and J-Pop Summit. I can say with certainly that Fanime is by far my favorite con that I've been to in CA. In fact I'd say it's the best con I've been too, second only to A-Kon in Dallas.

What I like so far:
+ Great dealers hall - I've found lots of great original merch from my favorite '80s and '90s anime, plus my favorite anime vendor couple from A-Kon are here (I was so happy when they instantly recognized me, they'e such wonder folks), a guy selling anime cells for as little as $10 and had a nice selection to boot, an old Japanese guy selling original posters from a shit load of great '80s and '90s stuff

+ Best game room I've been to - Very happy to see all the arcade machines, tons of seating and tables, and some diverse choice for console gaming too (Sega Saturns, the TVs on their sides so you can play the Japanese plane shooting games... sorry the name of this genre escapes me right now)

+ Wonderful cosplayers and photo locations

+ Great venue - Very easy to get around, pretty, I love that stage 0 is in the middle of everything, I love the atmosphere of having two hotels attached

+ Food choices - The food in the convention center isn't too bad, nor or the prices, but the proximity to so many other restaurants and even a Safeway is just great, plus having a Pete's Coffee in the venue is really convenient for those of use who need caffeine pick me ups

+ Weather - Great geographic location and season (Nothing sucks more than sweating off all your makeup -_-;

+ Theaters play good stuff - Love the nostalgia room (watching Otaku no Video on Friday morning was the perfect way to stat off the con), love that they have all the hentai at night (even though I haven't actually gotten a chance to go yet), [does anyone know why AX was just playing a bunch of 5+ year old Netflix rubbish last year? Is that normal for them?]

+ General atmosphere is super nice

+ Friendly and accommodating con staff - I haven't encountered a rude staff member yet, they all seem pretty energetic and excited to here, when I needed band-aides for my feet they gave me plenty, the bag check room is an AMAZING service (every con should have this!)

+ Con is 24 hours

They need to make a distinction between skit and costume awards. The Final Form Ryuko only got the Epic Cosplay Wig award because she and Nui had ridiculous wigs but the Nui didn't look that great. Ryuko's wig looked like the only well constructed part.

The UtaPri group? Fuck yeah. I didnt' really get to see the costume up close but every one except the pink one seemed legit. They actually knew how to dance and picked something with something hugely entertaining compared to the usual shlock. The people in the background though with the letters were totally unnecessary.

I liked the Rap Battle group and appreciated the captions on the jumbo screens, but then I wasn't paying much attention to the cosplayers themselves.

The Satsuki's suit seemed great but that katana was fail. For Satsuki you need to have a long enough katana to make the pose work. You can't just modify something from the toy store.

I guess I like the Let it Go Skit more because it was Novice. The tear away costume was terrible (tearable?) and seemed to be slipping off her partway through. Also it was pretty easy to predict it was going to be a tear-away since you could see a couple blue sequin peeking through The "snowflakes" were just standing there during parts of the song where they could have at least been dancing or swaying around and their costumes were just white dresses. Also cutting up a super well known song like that was super jarring.

Sailor Moon Burlesque was solid

Kite was one of the few that didn't look like it was going to fall apart on stage. Just wish he did a couple more cool poses.

Not exactly sure what Accelerator won for? The costume is parts, shirt and a wig and their skit was one of the most confusing.

Yasuo seemed solid though the wig color was pretty off.

Overall a good year. The intermission entertainment was pretty good and seems like better placement than a preshow. The cringe-worthy skits are less than normal. Though some of the best performances ended up in the beginning. Don't really like how walk-ons got mixed in. Or maybe keep them mixed in, but at least indicate that it will be a walk-on?

But please get rid of that emcee. He doesn't seem like he wants to keep there and wouldn't stop apologizing for last year. You're allowed to say they've been working hard to make improvements but move the fuck on.
