I'm pretty excited for Fanime this year. I got my AA table with a friend and excited for just having fun times. I'm also really happy we can pick up our badges at the AA instead of the huge reg line so my heart goes out to those who have to wait. I couldn't believe how crazy long it was last year.

No new cosplays this year sadly cause I'm just working on AA stuff but I fixed up my Miriel from FE: A and hopefully can get pictures this time.

Excited to see the new areas now that constructions finished, too.

That's cool man, I understand that this stuff is really tricky as there's a certain "feel" that an ideal promo carries that's hard to describe. For gimmicks I find that you don't have to try too hard to think of gimmicks as you really just base your personality off of who you're dressing up as. If you're still interested in trying out I can help out create a personality.

As a Pro Wrestler, promo work is easy if you are creative. The only time it's ever an issue is in front of crowds. I don't want to deal with the CWF, but I may pop by to see how bad of a parody it is.

Cutting a promo sounds so much fun. I came up with mostly /m/ gimmicks like Stone Cold V3, or a /co/ gimmick like Captain Hulkamania. Horrible gimmicks I know, but when you can walk the walk, you better talk the talk too. WOOO!

If you're up for a little five minute drive, on Saratoga Ave. there's a great Japanese food place with really good desserts called Ringer Hut.

I have somewhere, a list of places in the San Jose area that deliver to hotels ranging from American to Asian to Mexican to pretty much anything. I'll see if I can dig it up.

I'm pretty sure there's a free shuttle service to the convention center and hotels since they were offering free shuttle service from the nearby hotels to the convention center?

As for something fun to do? There's a theater nearby if you want to catch a movie while you wait. There's a small mall area, shopping downtown and a lovely cathedral. Mostly touristy things but the area's very pretty. There's a park near the convention center that has a lovely creek and Science Center. Might not be ideal but it makes for nice walking around and admiring the scenery.

>>7554821
I'm not sure if a drive is going to work out since I think there are more people in our group than there is space in the one car we'll have access to, but thanks!

Do you know if they deliver later in the evening? At AX we had Thai food delivered to our room at like, midnight, because we were too drunk to feed ourselves. I forget what app one of my roomies used to find the place.

No problem. What I do love about Fanime is they have a lot of food places within walking distance that are usually open late. AX it felt like everything closed once night hit.

Most of them close around 10pm so if you order before then they should delivery it no problem. A lot of places have about a 6 dollar delivery fee but some are free.

Apparently our definitions of late don't quiiiite match up. Last year I was in masquerade and we actually ran into a huge issue of where to go for food. We actually bailed from masq way early, right after our skit, but a few of us felt really sick and wound up lounging around in our room until we got too hungry to not go find food.
We couldn't find anything open past 10 that wasn't Original Joes, which was honestly a kind of disappointing restaurant after all the hype I'd heard about it.
Usually we try not to eat too late but sometimes it just happens.
At least with Fanime there's a Safeway near by. I don't know if it's one that's open really late like some are, but it's great for emergency food.

At AX, everything just felt so disjointed from the con that getting delivery seemed like the most sensible thing for us to do unless we wanted to go to the Yardhouse.

>> No.7555020

A lot of the places by the convention center close really, really late. I've gone out to get food around midnight or later, and places were still open. Failing that, I'm pretty positive Jack in the Crack and McDonald's are 24 hour.

>> No.7555028

I had an awful lot of fun at the last Fanime, though that was mostly because I went to it with a great group. Unsure if I want to head back this year though, I seemed to have terrible luck with panel quality and I'm still bitter about that early bird SMT panel getting cancelled. I dunno, is it still worth it to go to Fanime if you'll probably be alone for the swap meet and artist's alley? Or would I be better off saving my money and shopping online?

Is this a new email or is my reading comprehension getting worse?

New email, technically. I had a really odd and complicated question about registration, and that was part of their answer.

I pre-registered when Fanime was claiming that we needed to do so in order to get the convention rates on hotels. When Fanime changed their minds about it, I asked if it was possible to get a refund if my panel(s) were approved. Once approved, I emailed them again, and asked about the refund and whether or not I'd be able to use the express line for badge pickup. They're giving me a refund post-con because of the confusion about the hotels and said "I'll have to discuss with registration how to allow you access to the express line, since normally your discount slip is your access key to that line." I'm just assuming that the line still exists based on that.

Anyways, yes it is SUPER close to the Fairmont. If you walk to Starbucks/movie theater, you'll see right there next to the parking lot.

They're really good for a decent price imo. I could barely finish one of their savory crepes for lunch (then I again I don't eat too much but still it's p big)

Ahhh you're right on the whole cutting thing, we wouldn't want to cause riots haha. Well we road trip in with friends from L.A and usually get in around 1-2pm. So!

Mexican fast food: La Victoria's or Iguanna's depending on your preference. Iguanna's has more snacks and MONSTER DIP, plus nacho fries! But La Victoria has their famous orange sauce and I favor their carne asada.

Ike's Sandwiches! A bit of a walk to Santa Clara Street (about 3 city blocks, or you can hop onto Light Rail 2 stops away) but LOTS of options here. It was featured on Man Vs. Food for their Kryptonite sandwich, but they have more tamer/ecletic fare, plus they have gluten-free/vegan options!

Pizza is more limited, there is Pizza Chicago which offers deep dish, YMMV. Pizza My Heart is the local favorite for thin crust, and I would advise avoid House of Pizza as it;s rather bland.

A new spot is Pauly's Famous Franks & Fries next to Iguanna's. Oodles of hot dog combinations plus fries! I think Hoagie's is overrated personally, for a better cheesesteak I would recommend the Blue Chip instead.

Pita Pit is right across from Safeway, they offer a little discount to Fanime attendees. They even have breakfast pitas, pick it up along with your caramel frappuchino!

For slightly formal dining, Original Joe's has Italian fare. I'd recommend going out of your way to San Pedro Square and eat at Los Cubanos. Family-run restaurant with great dishes like oxtails and PLANTAINS. Also Sonoma Chicken Coop!

My favorite yunknown gem has got to be Bo Town. It's on the other side of the club district and has your usual Chinese/Vietnamese family-style eats, but they have the best sizzling beef steak (on a hot iron plate!) & fried rice combo for under $10. Worth going out of your way to try =D.

Last year Tandoori Oven had a discount for badge holders too, IIRC. Hopefully they'll have it again this year since whenever my group of friends can't decide what we want, we usually just end up there.

There's also always Gordon Biersch for your beer needs + to escape from weeaboos since I don't think many of them end up there. One of their summer brews last year was kinda flat but I've always wound that the Palo Alto location has better stuff anyway.

Smoke Eaters for your chicken wing needs, plus the infamous 911/Hellfire Challenge!

Same, I'm from the Valley and it's the closest con that's not SacAnime. Anything else would be airplane/bus fees. I usually do split a Hilton/Marriot room with a good number of people so that price isn't too high. I'm hoping Japan Expo ends up being able to pick up some of Fanime's slack.

Also one day I'll save Fanime by starting a Steampunk, Homestuck, and Pony convention about 15 miles away on the same weekend to funnel out some of the shitty parts of it. Maybe...

>> No.7561674

If Japan Expo had Fanime's date it'd do great. Since it's in the back of the line a lot of people probably already spent all their money on Fanime and AX. As much as I want Fanime to do good they sure as hell aren't showing the same enthusiasm.

Seriously, if we could have Japan Expo in San Jose on Memorial Day weekend it'd dominate. They have the pull to get big name guests, the budget to really pull something off, would be the first big con of summer, would be on a three day weekend, and would have a great location in terms of performance hall, photo locations, and eating. It's a pity Fanime is just sitting on their ass wasting the spot they're in.

time and location. San Mateo in late August? Not the best for either. Colleges and high schools are about to start up or already have, people have already blown their convention budgets.

San Jose on Memorial Day is a plum spot. Three day weekend for many, great location, lots of colleges are out of session. Shit, just look at Fanime. It does fucking nothing and people go to it. It's been lackluster going on three years and people still go.

I loved JX last year but it was a ghost town because of the reasons above. Saturday was the only really populated date. If JX brings over HUGE names then maybe you'll have something but even then I don't know because a lot of the congoing demographic are schoolgoing folk and even a huge name cannot fight school.

I agree with Fanime being worse over the last few years, and as much as I like JX, it seriously needs more events before it can be big. I went to all days of JX and I ran out of things to do really fast. For Fanime I feel like I do need a weekend pass to see/do everything. Just going through AA and Dealers can take better part of the day, not to mention all the panels and the game room.

San Mateo is further away from me too so I think I will only make it to one day, but I think that's already plenty enough for that con.

JX definitely needs more events. Guests were okay. It's kind of hotel or small convention center size right now. I would even compare it to being kind of a variety show like J-Pop Summit or Cherry Blossom Festival are, except you have to pay for it. I have hopes for it but I don't know if it'll last long enough here to fulfill its potential out here in a very event packed state. We are both big/gl/normal guys, and just going in street clothes to enjoy everybody else and get some fun pictures. We dressed last year at AX as henchmen, but dont have the funds to do any cosplay this year.

Was hoping you guys could tell me more about how things are there, this is my(our) first fanime. (autocorrect famine)

We arent going to buy passes because...$$$
I did it at SacAnime and it was actually fun, still get to admire costumes, love up some favorite characters, and snap pics.
is this possible? like how AX has that open area bellow the stairs and the walkways.

Also, if there are any adult nerds who would like to buy our friendship and companionship to bars or clubs, we are pretty cheap, good, and (mostly) safe fun. Married wingmen for hire lol.

Current staffer here. As much blame as Wolfgang may get, speaking as someone in a department runs a bit autonomously it's not just one person at fault here. I think there is a culture of malaise in Fanime where we do what we do but the love and passion for working the show is not flowing throughout the staff. I say this because in my experience the more thrilled and excited you may be for staffing a convention the more on-top of things you may be.

This is not universal mind you, I've staffed shows where the opposite applies. But this feeling of going through the motions is what is hurting Fanime more than anything, despite whomever the chair is. Look back to the years of Scott Rux as chair or even further for when organization was even more tenuous.

>> No.7572326

>>7572306

Another issue I can see is the lack of headhunting for key positions, case in point Guest Relations. From what I gather the GR department as it stands does not have the connections or relationships to bring in name guests. Budgetary issues may also account for this. If a known GR person (like say, Taka of AX fame) was brought in to build of the department from the ground up, that sort of reform would be of great benefit in the immediate future.

I saw a hotel staffer walk over with a bunch of Ethernet cables and an extension cable and said fuck it and went downtown since I needed to get there anyway. Somehow after six years of linecon I wasn't believing the lady at CA saying there was no line to speak of at SJCC.
