So ita and nitpick threads etc are pretty much par for the course in these here parts but what about unusual but great j-fash outfits that don't necessarily conform to the commonly expected norms but still look great and generally kick ass?

So, post great examples of the unconventional, the unusual, the unexpected and the improbably successful.

Bonus points for resisting the urge to post an excessive rant about why anons example is ridiculous and way off the mark, and actually post your own example instead.

it's interesting to see the different perspectives. The girl in question clearly knows how to coordinate in more conventional ways such as in the attached pic, so I see the blouse as more of a very deliberate style choice rather than mistake or because 'it was all she had lying around' or some other such thing. This is a great example of how to bring in a colour into a coord. The black looks so balanced, through top, middle and bottom of the whole outfit. So many times I've seen people just put it onto two parts of the outfit, and it looks unbalanced.

I have a few, some might disagree if they're actually unconventional or not. For starters, the shades of green used here don't remotely match the green in the dress and she's wearing what looks to be a dog blanket as a shawl, but totally pulls it off.
I think we're going to notice a common theme here though, that all these "unconventional and pulling it off" girls are qt 3.14

Sure you can, but black gets a bad rap and usually looks really out of place. I think it's mostly because black is a lot of "babbys first coord" mistakes because they already own black formal shoes and socks and maybe even a plain cardigan so they decide that matches their pastel vomit as long as they just use a bunch of it.

VanillaBlitz has conventional styling nailed down, but I've always loved her more adventurous outfits. Ordinarily you'd want to avoid all these different patterns (tartan, diamonds, dots), but in this case it takes a "just fine" sweet outfit into fantastic punk territory.

IMO these belong in the nitpick thread rather than here. The first coord is way too complicated, I don't know what I should focus my eyes on. She should have heeded the words of Coco Chanel and taken off one thing before going out. And the second one is maybe... too simple? No two things on that outfit match, but only because she's wearing the barest minimum amount of clothing needed to qualify as a lolita outfit.

I think the trick here is simply sticking with more solids to tone down the print. Nice plain cardigan, solid tights. Accessories, but not too many.

This isn't hard to do, I think a lot of lolitas just get caught up in piling too much on and being matchy matchy. A busy print can usually do a lot of the work on its own.

This is the only fandom-themed outfit I've seen that totally works, in my opinion. It mixes up the traditional Sailor Moon look enough so that it doesn't look like a costume, but keeps enough elements intact that fans of the franchise will recognize it.
