I can't figure out what color ragyo's eyes are either. Sometimes the look brown, others they look reddish, others they look hazel. I have blue eyes so I need to buy lenses either way, but I want to get them right.

Nah. It's still offensive minstrel makeup, and even if you're some uninformed Asian dude/dudette who Googled "making yourself look black with makeup" there's a wealth of information on why blackface isn't considered tolerable.
They pretty much know what they're doing, they just don't care and ignore the implications (either because there aren't enough black people around them for them to think about their actions, or because they're just careless in general).

Not the one you're arguing with, but the underside of her eyes are also unpainted. It's common to use something larger (eg a sponge) to apply makeup to larger areas of the face, then switch to a smaller brush -- like the one being held in the photo -- to paint the makeup precisely into smaller, trickier areas. It would take too long to paint the whole face with the smaller brush, while the sponge wouldn't be able to get into crevices like the cupids bow above her lips (which explains why there's no makeup around her lips yet)

Since this is obviously a progress photo, not even the complete makeup, I'm going to hold off calling it blackface. I don't see why anyone would do a racist joke hououmaru anyway, especially if they've done the other characters from the show seriously. It's far more likely that the group of cosplayers is in some Asian country that doesn't have a lot of dark skinned people, so they approached it pretty much the way avatar cosplayers approach blue skin.

Using makeup to create the illusion that you are black is blackface. That's really all there is to it.

My contacts just came in the mail today (Friggin finally. Never ordering from Honeycolor again) and I'm working on his jacket as we speak.

No progress on his respirator minus just acquiring the Acrylic. I don't have any immediate access to a band saw so I'm going to see how a Hot Knife works for cutting it out and maybe I'll get to heating it after i'm done working for the next 5 days straight.

I am working on it though! And hopefully it'll be done before the month is over. I'd have it done already but my work schedule is insane.

Surprisingly enough, I found them at the dollar store. i'm contemplating screwing off the sides and attatching it to the respirator once I've finished it, instead of risking it falling down or off of my face.

I'll check at my local CVS or something, but on a side note i decided to take your idea on the respirator and heat form acrylic sheeting to a mold.
Heres how my mold has come out so far!

Hey Everyone!
In 2 weeks I will be attending Fanime as Tsumugu and I've got most of the outfit done, except for the sewing machine gun. I can't quite figure out how the Tsumugu cosplayers are making theirs. There are a couple really nice ones out there, but I just can't decide on which way to approach making the gun. Any help?

I have never had so much fun cosplay as I did as Mako earlier in the year.
I'm in the middle of remaking my skirt and collar for the end of the month. The skirt I originally made was too flimsy and didn't hold the pleats very well, and I stupidly made the skirt slightly too small and with not enough interfacing in the waistband so it just wrinkled making it very unflattering (other wise I'd post pics).

Progress on my second go at the Bakuzan blade blank. I've gotten way better at spray painting, especially compared to my first one. Candy-coat finish just like I wanted, and has an intense [blinding] glare in daylight, and gold-bar like reflection indoors. 5 clears so far, 3 more to go for total of 8. Wet sanded between all coats.

Sure, I could've just re-purposed a Rukia or other white katana like everyone else, but eh, what's the fun in that. Also wouldn't be to my specs, and con safe since it's wood.

Gonna use the culmination of what I've learned on this to make the scissor blade next. I reckon the scissor blade is way easier since mistakes can be brushed off as detail. Mistakes on a katana on the other hand stand out like a sore thumb.

I'm in the middle of making my Nui cosplay and hoping I could get some advice.
I'm not exactly the smallest girl and usually I alter bodice designs to be lace up so they're much more flattering. I can generally get away with it because the characters I cosplay have long hair which cover the back and inaccuracy.
Problem is, if I put in the lacing there for Nui; there will be no way to hide it...

TLDR; Do you think I could sacrifice the accuracy for a better fit?

I think you can get away with adding laces. She has some sort of lace structure on the sides of her dress, so it won't look too out of place.
Just be sure to use matching grommets/laces. Make it look like something she'd wear.

Do any of you guys have a suggestion for a Ryuko base wig? I really wanted to use Arda's Inigo in Raven, but its been sold out for ages.

I'd prefer a wig color closer to black than blue, but finding a good blue-black wig leaning on the black side is virtually impossible. They're all too blue.

How do I cosplay as this man? Now, I know how to sew curtains and canopy covers, this is beyond me. I may have to order the jacket and possibly the pants. I do have white pants but they may be of a different shade than the jacket and I don't want to risk that.

My biggest concern is the lighting effects, the light tube w/e it is. How do I go about making this? How do I power it?

Thank you, /cgl/. As for the shoes I might opt for simple white slip ons. I may also want to order the glasses, although that is a separate issue altogether, for I use glasses but do not have a prescription for contacts.

Inu's Slave cable is driving me up a fucking wall. I've tried looking a IDE ribbon cable that's longer than 3ft and I suppose that's impossible.
Should I just resort to transparent sheets, or is there such a thing as a longer-than-3ft-slave cable....what have others used?

Your sleeve cap needs to be a bit puffier and the silhouette of the skirt is really off. Making an a-line skirt with gored pleats like pic related would be more appropriate than box pleats for Nonon's uniform (also I feel like it would look better in general if there was no seam between the bodice and the skirt). Also the skirt looks too long.

at this point in time, it looks like you made a lolita dress based off nonon rather than looking at any references. The bib placement looks spot on to the references though.
-If you're going to do a separate bodice and skirt, you need the pleats to start flaring out lower, around the iliac crest/hip rather than true waist. Basically, where low riding jeans sit. Either close the pleats at the top or lengthen the bodice to make it low waisted
-skirt is too long
-sleeve not poofy enough

I would extend the bodice down to start flaring out like an A-line/princess line dress and either do a separate gored-with-pleats skirt or make it a fully princess line dress with pleats and no waist seam. You'll need to stick a centre front seam in the thing to put that centre front box pleat in though, so far I've only seen it done without a seam and just having the pleats either side (looks uneven usually because of a big gap at the front) or with a separate skirt or without a seam and some sloppily inserted fabric. I'm guessing once you split the centre front piece it's a 12 panel bodice, which will give you more than enough pleats in total - as far as I can tell, there's either 10 or 12 although in some references it looks like 8. I gave up, went for an 8 panel pattern and said fuck it. I'm currently struggling through getting the pleats to start at the right height, let alone actually sewing the thing up.

When I make the real dress, I'll be taking out the waist seam, it just makes it easier to work on it in 2 parts for now. Back to the cutting board for me, if I make any real progress I'll be back!

For anyone who gives a shit about a scratch-built Bakuzan, finally finished this bastard.
The sheath will go down the road but I gotta get working on a scissor blade for a friend. Then Kouryo and Gako just because. I really enjoyed making this.

lol, the blade looks like a car's paint finish. But that edge's gleam doe.

The one linked above was my first try though, but made the same. I messed up on the blade's paint job as well as blade material choice (MDF; too wobbly at 36", 1/2" thickness), so I disassembled it and redid the blade (this time with red oak, 1/2" thick) and paint on everything, as well as fixing some minor stuff like filling some gaps, updating the handle wrap, etc.
Then re-assembled it to what you see in >>7557091.

Spark notes:
Blade is red oak.
Chrome button-head screws on the pommel.
Blade collar and pommel are sintra.
Blade collar, thin middle part is styrene.
Circle on pommel is a magnet.
2 prongs on the guard are plastic golf tees.
2 plugs under prongs/guard are chrome hole plugs.
Everything else is MDF.
Tsuka-ito/handle wrap is just white 3/16" nylon fabric at Walmart. Wrapped the handle around first by basically twirling around like a candy cane, keeping it on with 3M 77 adhesive spray. Then did another traditional diamond wrap on top without twisting in the middle as seen in typical katana handle wraps for grip (ruins the clean look imo).

Paint
Primer is Rustoleum Filler Primer.
Blade is Duplicolor Graphite wheel paint.
All silvers are Duplicolor Starlight Silver Metallic.
Clear coat is Rustoleum 2X Gloss.
Everything wood sealed with 2 coats shellac, coated 2x with filler primer (sanded 220, 320 each coat)/2x paint/2x clear, except for blade. Plastic just primed with Rustoleum 2x Grey primer instead of filler primer; same paint 2x/clear 2x as everything else.

Blade process was:
-Elmer’s wood filler (to fill in grain).
-Sand smooth; 100 grit, 220 grit, 320 grit.
-Shellac (to seal wood grain); two coats.
-Sand with 220 grit, 320 grit.
-Rustoleum Filler primer, 2 coats, sand smooth with 220 grit, 320 grit, 400 grit each coat
-Graphite wheel paint, 2 light coats, WET sand with 400 grit, 600 grit, 1000 grit, 1500 grit, 2000 grit each coat
-Graphite wheel paint, 1 medium wet coat, WET sand with 400 grit, 600 grit, 1000 grit, 1500 grit, 2000 grit
-Rustoleum 2X Clear Gloss, 8 coats, wet sand each coat 1000 grit, 1500 grit, 2000 grit.
-2 coats Pledge FloorCare (known as "Future Wax" by scale model kit builders; name kept changing throughout the decades).

Could have done with less clear coats though, since the Pledge can do that gloss by itself with only 1 coat. It's THAT shiny/wet looking. Just discovered it later on, that's why.

Polish (or keep polished) with a *pure polish* type of car polish. I used Meguiar's Show Care Glaze 7 with a microfiber towel. Don't use abrasive polishes, will dull the Pledge.

Hope this helps. I do want to add this is my first wood prop (well, 1.5st, since I redid it), so there might be some stuff I could have done better instead that is glaringly obvious to more experienced woodworkers.

Forgot to mention, for the clears, you'll have to apply a close-up, WET coat, every coat. Otherwise all you get is gritty finish that takes more work. It takes practice to avoid runs, so practice on some scrap pieces first. When spraying, always be moving, being close and fast, never stationary.

Try godets? You'd still be stuck with the problem of drafting a form-fitting dress with an A-line skirt while hiding the seams for that under the gold trim, but once you get that sorted you can cut the skirt up and insert additional fabric in between to make the actual pleating.

what I ended up doing was 3 slave cables, .99 cent each, 24 inch long vertically, and gonna put one for the legs one and combine 2 for the back one. I liked the EL tape idea, but shits expensive, too expensive for me with all my brand new cosplays for fanime. it rounded out to be about 60 bucks, and I'd kinda rather go for that fun fact of actually having the slave cable, although thought to others, if you have the cash, I'd honestly get both salve cables and El wire and make it look all cool.

first off, my opinion, don't buy shitty ass China - quality costunes. period. If your not gonna make it yourself, commission it from a homie; they most likely need the money more and it comes out to 100% better quality. it'll probably be the same price, but it's worth it in the end.
I'm not sure how to qualify my costuming; an alterations-er maybe? I buy tops and jacket and pants (basic stuff) that look exactly like the base of the outfit, so like Inu's jacket and pants were pre-bought, then I go to work on everything else; the leds, the boxes, the wig, the symbols...yeah.

Anyone tried making Ryuko's shoes?

I'm thinking of taking these converse, folding down the sides, adding some padding on the back (the round bits) and putting in a new base... Does that sound okay? I've never really done this before.

I think you're going to be disappointed with the outcome as Ryuko wears Puma Jespers, which are nothing like converse. The trouble with using converse as a base is that converse have very distinct lines and are canvas whereas jespers are leather and have their own very distinct proportions, I'd actually go for an off brand pleather high top with velcro strap on it in preference as then you'd really only need the padded cuff at the top.

Opinions for the bottom layer of Nonon's final Ultima uniform? Obviously the lace is not strictly accurate, but it would save me cutting 3m of scalloped hem, plus the gold has a bright yellow backing which I worry would be visible...

Yeah, obviously I'm not suggesting actual jespers because they're long discontinued and still won't be quite perfect, but you're better starting with pleather high top knockoffs since they're much closer than converse ever will be, especially if they're a bit chunky.

I actually lucked out and got the last pair of off-white available off of ebay from a UK seller.
Honestly I'm probably going to sell my Ryuko cosplay after summer cons, but keep the shoes because I like them so much and they were expensive enough to begin with.
