I haaaaate when people use skirts or Daisy Dukes for AJ. It makes zero fucking sense. This is a character who is the complete opposite of feminine, who spends all her time working on a farm, and has an entire episode devoted to her disregard for fashion. She's likely to be out there in baggy cargos and a tank, not tiny shorts and a tied flannel top like some stereotypical southern cumdumpster.

Rarity's also tend to go either too breezy or too sexy. I picture Rarara to have a more classic look with pencil skirts and blazers, or something that's completely flamboyant and bordering on drag queen.

That's what really makes or breaks a MLP cosplay for me. Too many people are just like "AJ is southern, Rarity likes fashion" etc and don't actually take other character traits into consideration. Rarity likes fashion, but she's completely over the top about it and likes flashy, extravagant things, not a simple dress like that girl is wearing. AJ is southern, but she's rather masculine and incredibly active, so a skirt like that would be hard to move in and she'd end up flashing everyone.

Maybe not deathly obese because she bounces around a lot, but the Pinkie in the OP does have the body type I'd imagine her to have, just not... the outfit. Just look for Gala pinkies. There's a ton of good ones out there.

You know how Japan has Shoujo, an entire genre dedicated to little girls that is so competitive the quality of television is good enough that we have tons of otaku and NEETs enjoying it, leading to crossovers like Madoka and Nanoha?

The USA has suffered from shit after shit of horrible female "entertainment" that would be better served feeding to toddlers as an introduction to the English language.

MLP happened to be the first western girl's show that doesn't treat viewers like absolute morons, with characters deeper than "I like pretty colors!" "I'm slightly more self centered than all the other characters so I'm automatically a horrible bitch and the antagonist!".

So basically, if female entertainment is food, Shoujo is foie gras, rare, relatively unknown in the US, but highly appreciated for it's quality, and MLP is sirloin in a world where the only food is crusty bread.

I have seen ood individual. Osplays but never a truly strong looking group. Someone ways messes it up.

My maint contentions are that A) a lot of cosplays is unneccesarily sexy and B) a lot looks, well . . . Garish as opposed to looking like actual outfits anyone would conceivably wear. Maybe that is just a matter of opinion and people want to look 'costumey' but if i were to cosplay any MLP character I would want the individual pieces to look like real clothing that is actually worn. What I would do for different characters:

No daisy dukes, denim skirts or midriff bearing tops. Bootcut jeans over brown boots, orange button up with rolled up sleeves, perhaps left unbuttoned with a white or black undershirt. If buttoned, no crazy cleavage. I get a sort of a Hank Hill (I know, odd) vibe from her, I think she'd tuck in her top, thats what Hank would do. Oh and the hat.

I actually think she's done well a lot of the time, just that all too often they make her overly feminine/sexy when she's a tomboy. So like, sneakers, shorts/capris/pants, tees/hoodie/jacket. I am partial to the idea of goggles and a varsity-military type jacket, like she's a pilot who likes to wear uniform items with her civvies.

Hey anon, I understand where you're coming from. I see the same thing too. I think there's probably also a correlation between her being a seamstress and cosplayers identifying with that, since they sew and all.
It's interesting that the other anon thinks that people only complement girls by seeing past everything and only commenting on their natural looks. Rarity isn't ugly, but makeup flatters. So if everyone was on the same scale of attractiveness, her knowledge in flattering makeup and fashion would make her look more attractive than the others. I don't think that's a hard concept to grasp.

People tend to pick which pony they cosplay based off of their own personality (or the personality that they wish they had). A shy girl is going to lean towards Fluttershy before Pinkie Pie. Rarity is very grand and a bit haughty. That'll attract confident girls, but also attract girls who are a little full of themselves. Y'know. The ones who think they're a little more attractive than they are? The ones who think they have a better fashion sense than they do. Thus the terrible Rarity cosplays are born.
