I used this with some heavy modification recently.

This same idea can be used for dyeing faux fur. Just water down the acrylic. I was instructed to paint on the BACK of the fabric, but if the fur is a really thick pile, I actually just painted the watered down acrylic straight on it. As long as the mixture isn't too thick (it should be very liquidy) you can paint straight on the front side/pile of the fur. Mine was super saturated, but it turned out fine. Just keep combing it every few hours and let it air dry for a day or two.

It does somewhat mess with the silky texture of nice faux fur. It's still soft compared to cheap fur, but is nowhere near as silky as the pieces I didn't dye.

You can also color faux fur with alcohol-based markers like Copic or Prismacolor. If you need any fur that's "tipped" or has little bits of color and can't afford the expensive faux fur that looks like it (or just need a small bit), consider using markers. I used this to get a grey/brown rabbit fur look using JoAnn's white fur trim. Again, not as soft as it originally was, but it works and was economical.
