Seriously, what's the point of dressing up in ridiculous outfits?

once you really get into character the sex can get quite wild

Attention. Girls with low self esteem who don't get noticed in normal clothes, due to them being either ugly or crazy, like to dress up as a character men like in order to receive some kind of validation from a sex that otherwise normally ignores them.

It was supposed to be a way to meet other fans of something at conventions. Back in the day anime wasn't as accessible as it is today, and you couldn't talk about it as much on the fledgeling internet, so dressing up in a costume you made (because again you couldn't buy shit on the internet like you can now) of a character you liked was a way to meet other people who liked the same obscure ass chinese Pokemon show you did.

It's different for a lot of people. Some people have so much obsession/devotion to a character that it's about to burst out of their chest, alien-style. They can express this by cosplay. Other people do it socially, because all their friends do it. It's a social activity for them. This is separate but related to people who do it to meet people. Cosplay is excellent social currency in fandom communities. Some people do it because they want to show off, either their skills or their body...or both.

This right here sums it up.

I've been cosplaying since 1998 and I watched the slow crossover from what you cosplay being a calling card to talk to new people change into being a casual way to one up others or get attention you aren't getting elsewhere.

because I hate myself and need validation from strangers both in real life and on the internet that I'm good at something and that I'm pretty (even if it's just flattery) <3

It's less the dressing up for me than it is the making things. Crafting is very therapeutic to me, I like working with my hands and getting a (hopefully) nice product out of it.

This is what it was like when I used to actually cosplay. I keep wanting to go back to it (hence /cgl/ posting) but there's too much exposure and drama nowdays for me to deal with, and when you meet somebody in a costume they turn out not to be actual fans and are just somebody who saw a costume and thought it was cute/sexy/popular.

Seems to be mainly an english-language country issue though, where I live it is nothing like this but that's probably because the cons aren't as big as the popular US ones.
