Only a couple months away!

What are you wearing?
Looking forward to anything in particular (panels, photoshoots, etc)?
How shitty are the lines gonna be this year? Place your bets.

>> No.7488145

I'm mostly just looking forward to seeing friends for the first time in ages. My best friend from a couple states away is coming; we're cosplaying Ryuko and Satsuki together one day, and I've agreed to let her dress me up in lolita on Saturday. Pretty excited!

>> No.7488200

I would say I'm looking forward to seeing how the new coaplay rules effect the quality of the show, but I'm not waiting in line for 6 hours just to get in.

>What are you wearing?
I'll be wearing lolita all 3 days. Pic related, I'll probably wear this coord on Friday.
>Looking forward to anything in particular (panels, photoshoots, etc)?
I'm mostly looking forward to meeting up with friends that I haven't seen in forever, though for a couple of people going with my group it will be their first con ever so I'll be hanging out with them for the majority of the time and just generally enjoying their reactions to everything, lol.
>How shitty are the lines gonna be this year? Place your bets.
On a scale of 1 to 10? On-site will probably be about a 9 and pre-reg will be about 4,500. I just hope the Anatole will take extra measures to protect the art this year, I saw at least one painting with a huge gouge in it and that wasn't even at noon on Friday.

Also, are there any murmurs yet about a cgl or a lolita meetup this year?

We stayed at the Sheraton Suites across the street (to the east) last year and are doing so again this year. It was such a great hotel. The suite rooms were cheaper than the Anatole's regular small rooms. Also, we totaled our vehicle on Thursday night and the hotel went out of their way to help us deal with it on Thursday and Friday, going so far as to let us leave the keys with the front desk and have them arrange the tow truck when it arrived on Friday, so we could go enjoy the con. Also, we never had to wait for the elevators over 2-3 minutes. One time, we were waiting 5 minutes, which is not a huge deal at a con at all since 30-minute waits are not that unusual. However, because we had been waiting 5 minutes, the hotel manager came and let us all use the staff elevator (even though no one had complained or seemed to even be upset at the wait). Highly recommend them!

>> No.7495570

I haven't been in a few years, so I'm excited to see the new hotel and all of the art. Here's some advice I'm giving my roomies this year, since our organizer likes staying at the con hotel:
>Bring your own towels.
Anatole was horrendously jewish with the towels last year. I think it was limited to 4-5 towels TOTAL per room, regardless of how many people were in your room. You could call to have dirty ones swapped out for clean ones, but goddamn, it was an ordeal.

>Bring your own hairdryer or coordinate with roomies to bring one, since Anatole will take 'em out before the con.

>Spend late Thursday night or early early Friday morning mapping out the hotel.
You'll also get to see the art without faggots doing their leledgyshit.

>If you stay at the hotel, they may show the cosplay on their shitty hotel channel.
The cameras are shit, but if you're like me and would rather be cozy up in the room and make a bad cosplay drinking game, this option exists.

I didn't mean to imply that SJ is filled with shit tier cosplay, just more that since A-Kon has the reputation as "the" con of Texas, because it's the biggest and used to be one of the biggest cons in the US, you get out of state people with really high tier cosplays who come to the con to show their shit off to a big audience. Not competing in cosplay this year, despite it being tiered. Looking forward to hosting a panel and having a more chill time since I'm NOT having to spend half Saturday doing contest shit. Hoping to go Thursday night and just hang with friends and maybe look at the art this year.

>How shitty are the lines gonna be this year? Place your bets.
About as shitty at any con with 20k+ people. Nothing beats Line Con/AB '08 but I've never had as big an issue with A-kon lines because I always pick up Thursday night. But even better, this year I've got a panel pass and will be by-passing lines altogether.

Speaking of panels, did you seagulls submit any and what got in? I've heard some rumblings on Facebook that some of the "usual" panels didn't make it, but everyone was purposefully vague in a butthurt kind of way.

Yep, signed up. We competed last year and were pleasantly surprised with how much better it was run than in 2010 (the other year we competed). And that was before they added categories. I think it will be even better this year. The pre-judging was really painless because we could just go whenever we felt like it that day, and we only had to wait about 10 minutes to talk to the judges. They really should make a rule where you can't enter the next year if you've already won. And they should put a cap on total "winnings." That would be nice. Give people more of a chance to enter art for a variety of settings. I just really have a hard time with how "unfairly" A-kon seems to run a lot of their contests and such, but at least with the cosplay contest getting tiered, maybe there will be changes elsewhere.

I didn't cap it before it got deleted, but I don't think A-Kon will allow any kind of reasonable discussion on the topic on their page because of something that happened a couple of days ago.
A week before the original deadline, they posted a link on their Facebook page to the Contest page on their site, saying they're "desperate for artists, especially for the t-shirt contest!" which basically means they thought all of the entries up to that point were shit. Note that the theme was "25 Years!", that's it. "Just keep 25 years in mind for the theme!" which is what they did for year 20 (pic related, it was the winning shirt that year).
Well, not only did they send an all-points bulletin that was a slap in the face to everyone who had entered so far, but they actually -changed the fucking theme-. Now, the theme is shown as " Celebrating A-Kon’s 25 years – Reflecting on the Past and Looking to the Future!" and they extended the deadline by one week. If they'd wanted a more nostalgic piece in the beginning they should've said so or waited until year 30 to play on that idea (because we all know they're going to be obsessing over these milestones as long as the con is running).
So after posting the page, one person immediately commented with something to the effect of "It's the same person year after year, why even bother posting this?" to which A-Kon replied, "Actually, for the t-shirt contest, it's a different winner every year!" And there were several days of silence on that, assumingly because people were stunned at the stupidity of that comment. One girl finally spoke out and said something like "I think people are just hesitant to enter because zimmay has won three years in a row", but after that stayed up for a day or two A-Kon deleted all of the comments on that post except for one girl asking about the status of her entry.
If zimmay wins again I'm definitely going to say something. This is ridiculous.

I think it wasn't saying they were shit, but I know a lot of artists waited last minute to enter. Then they had the extension so they were able to fancy their art up a bit. That's such bullshit. I've accepted the fact that A-kon is terribly run despite it's age and size, but sometimes it amazes me just how stupid they are.

I wonder if them designing a mascot might help lend some consistency to the designs. I admit it's a bit daunting with a theme so open like they had, I'm just never sure what type of person to draw and what gender, etc. I always liked how cons like Anime Boston had mascots, which I think make it a bit more approachable. At least I'd find it a lot easier to essentially draw a "fanart" that incorporates the mascot and the theme instead of having it so wide open. Maybe my creativity just isn't there.

And as much as I dislike that Zimmay has won so much, at least it's better than Kirsten McGuire "I still draw like I'm a 14 year old weeaboo." They slap her shit on all the mini/micro-akon stuff and I have no idea how anyone can look at her work and say it's remotely good.

They actually had a contest for an official A-Kon mascot back in.... 2000? 2001? Something like that, maybe it was 2002. (Oldfag is old and the memory ain't what it used to be.) The girl who won the mascot contest got a free pass to the convention, was a fan guest of some kind and her mascot was supposed to be used on all the signs, the program book cover, etc. I think the artist's name was Alice Edwards? They used the mascot for one year, and then immediately never used her again. Mascot in question was a purple alien girl, not that memorable. Previously, the unofficial A-Kon mascot was supposed to be the geisha robot they used to use on everything. I would very much like to push for a mascot contest. I think it lends some stability to the general art contests in that you're really judging based off artistic merit and creativity in adapting the concept/interpretation instead of "what's best to represent A-kon" which for me, was the biggest creative hurdle. What adequately captures a con such as A-kon (other than a steaming pile, now wouldn't that be funny, stick some moe eyes on a pile of shit and slap that on a t-shirt).

It's also not anything new or different than any other large convention. Heck, even if they had a local artist or bigger name artist design mascots as a commission/first year to roll them out type deal, even that's not so unusual.

A-kon's "brand image" is in the gutter, so a mascot contest and a bit more uniformity across the board with their brand might do them some good. While the tori gate is nice from a logo point of view, and would be interesting to still see in shirt designs, etc, what con DOESN'T have a mascot these days? If they want to be fair, design a male and female mascot so it's equal representation. Also might help if their themes were a bit more... concrete and less abstract.

A-fucking-men.
"Celebrating A-Kon’s 25 years – Reflecting on the Past and Looking to the Future!", what the fuck were they expecting out of this? I actually really like metsumei's entry because of that, she took elements from several past winning shirts and incorporated the shitty-looking girl from the very first A-Kon shirt and made her pretty damn kawaii. This girl put a lot of thought into this entry, it just sucks that probably none of that is going to be recognized by the average con-goer because A-Kon has been so generic and inconsistent with their "brand image". The most recognizable thing they've got going for them is all of artraccoon's same-face shit of Ai-ko and that's pretty pathetic.

Yeah, except Bang Ippongi was an actual published Japanese manga artist & B-movie actress. She still does manga, though none is translated into English anymore; she did one about getting older and her struggles with infertility (!!!) and her most recent one is a history of what Japanese fandom was like in the 80's. (For movie laughs, look up Exorsister, hilariously bad 90's direct to video Japanese horror schlock). I don't think Jnig does anything but cosplay and "model".

>> No.7512631

>>7511870

I did notice her entry didn't have a tori gate and I had thought you always had to incorporate that, but I like it well enough (admittedly, I don't buy a shirt, but if the art was really cool, an "anniversary year" shirt would be the year I'd buy).

But don't other cons have themes that are (maybe a bit boring) but really easy to translate, such as just going with genre themes? From what I recall, Anime Boston's themes were much more simple along those lines. I think the years I went it was something traditional Japanese, underwater, and then maybe the next year was gonna be crimefighting. Their theme also ties into the con-wide game they play, so it's a bit different, but they really need to streamline the contest.

Have a mascot (or pair of mascots), pick simple themes, be 100% clear about what HAS to be in the design, prohibit consecutive wins, maybe even put a cap on the total number of wins, etc.

But I totally agree with you on their brand inconsistency. The new website looks loads better than before but if you're gonna use a tori gate, slap that tori gate on everything. Same with the type. For a con this old, there NEEDS to be stability in advertising, marketing, branding, etc. I'm a designer so I'm hyper-sensitive to these needs I guess, but even if it's just a FACADE (because that's all it would be, you can't cover up shit and not smell the stench), it at least gives them a fresh start. Make the con LOOK professional and people might think it is.

I mean, if they FINALLY changed the cosplay contest to tiers, even with all this shirt drama, is too much to hope that they could be swayed to making some of these changes?

It would be really nice if they had someone to yes, volunteer to help them manage the brand, but they really need to PAY someone if it's serious logo or website work. About the only way I'd ever consider giving them truly free brand work would be to get free pass + hotel + food. They're a big and old enough con that for true design work in the branding department, they should pay someone.

Now for smaller things, yeah. And they really should have a better marketing/branding/social media operation. Because they need consistency across the board, and with how old the con is now, it really might be beneficial to seriously brand A-kon. Like I mentioned before in the thread, if you look professional people will think you are and might take the con more seriously, especially if, as a top 10 con they are attracting more and more out-of-town guests. If you want A-kon to be a con people travel to, then make it attractive. If you want people to come back again... well, no logo or website will be enough to do that, and they could use an overhaul elsewhere. But branding and brand consistency would be a very good start for them.

There were lines for everything at the con, that is expected. There was also a line for the tow truck place. Less expected.

The only real parking lots are the one for the hotel (small and will be full) and the one about a half mile away where you will have to cross under a highway underpass. You will possibly have to walk in the grass and in the heat.

Definitely echoing the parking sentiment though, my group was really pissed because the Renaissance was supposed to give us free parking because of some AAA membership perk our friend had, but then they said "oh, we don't offer that anymore~~", and there was a parking lot just a few feet from the hotel that other guests in the lobby were saying was for A-Kon parking (this is NOT the lot that the anon I'm quoting is talking about, that one is a bit further down the road). We didn't risk it though and thank god we didn't, every single one of those bitches got towed and that wasn't the only lot like that near the Anatole.

You seem to be really angry about the heat in the venue though, are you really saying you weren't expecting that at a convention with several thousand people in the middle of summer in Texas?? I'm looking forward to the masquerade ball on Thursday, but I'm probably going to have to unfollow the official A-Kon facebook page. The people posting there are so stupid it hurts. Rules & info for the masq have been up since December, but dumb bitches keep arguing that the masq is on Friday instead of Thursday. Reading comprehension, do you have it? It doesn't matter if you want it to be on Friday, shit's on Thursday, arguing about it with people who are trying to tell you the actual facts isn't going to change it.

The tabletop games is something the majority of cons have anyway, and there's a laughable amount of anime-related popular-enough games anyway (Pokemon and YuGiOh) that you'd need more diversity to thrive.

And that $20 could buy me something awesome in the dealer's room or go towards cosplay. Never understood the logic of spend more and take a gamble on how long the line will be. This is a pretty big con. I forget the exact numbers, but there's somewhere between 20k-30k people here? Something like that. It's also a party con. You're in a frat, so you'll feel pretty at home here. This is the second year A-Kon has been in the Hilton Anatole, so hopefully it's not as much of a hot mess as it was last year. Pick up a schedule and the guidebook app before the con so you know what you're doing. It's good to have a plan for A-Kon. It's HUGE. Also, enjoy the lines. I'm not kidding. Make some friends.

Of what? Money? Booze? Food? A lot to the three of those. Bring your own towels if you're staying in the Anatole as well.

>How much?
Money mainly, I'm fairly well off, but i'd just like to know how much i should expect to spend
And I'm staying a frat bro's house that lives in Dallas (but if my experience at San japan is like this i know that towels are damn near currency)

>Parties
Nice! I'll be sure to make some friends
And yeah i just read up a good band thats gonna be playing around there

Thank you!

Phi Mu Alpha? I'm Sigma Alpha Iota at my school, those are the only music frats I can think of besides Tau Beta Sigma, the marching band one, and SAI is a women's frat. Sorry everyone, moment of music frat nerdiness.
So, moving on.
>What to expect.
Far bigger con than y'all are used to, so definitely expect lines. Definitely get the guidebook app as was mentioned, it's great and I love it. The dealers room is mega large and has a fairly good selection compared to other Texas cons, so give it at least one run through for sure. If you like cosplayers, there will be some pretty impressive costumes in the open areas and the courtyard, so have a camera on you. The night life of this con is pretty lively, expect the older crowd to start to come out of the woodwork as the night goes on. If y'all are more partial to the older crowd, you may want to plan it so you sleep in a bit, because really honestly there isn't much you're going to miss programming wise, and you'll have slightly less exposure to 12-16 year olds that way, mainly because not as many in that demographic have hotel rooms. Also, compared to San Japan, this con is much less engaging, so be prepared to make your own fun.
>How much?
Depends on how much you want to spend on food and merch. If you're bringing food with you, this will be less, but if you're buying three meals a day, expect to spend about $100 on that alone for the weekend. Then just gage how much you're willing to spend on merch on top of that. Food and merch both are a little steeper compared to San Japan, at least in my experience. Food for sure, because you don't have a food court right there, instead you have overpriced food trucks and then expensive hotel food.
>Parties
Always plenty of room parties, just ask around generally. If you have other friends going besides your brothers, maybe ask them if they know of one that's going on.

I always set a budget for merch. Last year I really underestimated (hadn't been to a con that size in a few years) and only brought $50 cash. Will bring $100 this year. I usually have a list of series I want to collect for, and generally know the types of items I collect, so it helps me sift through e other crap. Akon has decent merch, but sometimes it IS stuff you can get cheaper online. I've also been spoiled by AnimePop here in Dallas, so I usually am more picky about what I buy at cons. Beware of vendors who charge extra to use a credit card, though.

The Anatole is not really great for food options that are cheap. Last year they set up a "fair style" food court of sorts. I personally picnic to keep cost down. Consider bringing snacks and eating only one meal at the con each day because it can get pricey. There are a few places around the area if you leave the hotel though.

Haha yup Phi Mu Alpha!
good guess!
I was hoping someone would tell me how much for food and merch so I'm glad I know now what to expect for that!
where are the cgl meetups gonna be?
I usually go to /mu/ or /fit/ but i go to this board to prep for cons and you guys have been a great help!

Welp, round 1 Voice-Over Idol winners were announced and it seems like a pretty good talent pool this year. Anyone else gonna go watch this batch compete? Agree/disagree with any of the contestant choices?

Bluh. I wish I was allowed to enter.
I tried last year but because I've done some work with Funimation I was disqualified.

My fingers are already so sore from hand stitching all this lace. Last year I was so coordinated and done on time. This year grad school threw me for a loop. I have 3 weeks to finish 2 cosplays and the panel ppt. Plus Mayterm. Ugh.

I'd think it would depend on how much work was done for Funimation. While the grounds for disqualification in that aspect are getting paid for singing or acting in any regard, it seems weird to place someone at that level who might just be starting out or only got paid once or twice for it. Sure the work with Funimation might help, but so would acting lessons and studying other voice actors. (I'm running based off the assumption that "some work" meant no more than 2, maybe 3 roles)

>>7561276
Despite not qualifying, were you there last year at the event? I'm not sure if I saw you there or not.

I've officially reached panic mode. Three costumes to finish, including the masquerade outfit. If I finish one this weekend, I think I'll be okay.

...but I also work 40-hr work weeks.

I've only voiced background roles, and participated in a few WALLA sessions. Nothing major.

Nah. I did sing for the halftime show during the cosplay contest though. I'll be doing it again this year. Hopefully I'll be a little bit less nervous this time around.

Did you get paid for those sessions? Once you start getting paid for that sort of thing, then I think you're professional. I mean you're IN anime. Background or not, that's kinda beyond amateur which I think the contest is meant for.

Yeah I did get paid. I mean, I can understand why I was disqualified, I'm just frustrated because I haven't really gotten any work since then an was hoping to use the competition to get my name out there again, I guess.

So does anyone know what changes are being made this year to cut down on bullshit? Idk about y'all but I think if I see another thing other than an elevator getting shut down for over crowding, I may just lose it.

I prefer anime simply because it's the most fun for me, personally. I love how over the top everything is and the challenge that comes with it. I'm not really trying to make a full-blown career out of it (I'm actually going into mortuary work), but radio work seems fun too.

So you're pissed you can't compete even though you already do work for Funimation, but you really just want to do work in anime. Do you realize how stupid you sound? You've already lived the otaku dream, but it's not good enough. You want to try and beat a bunch of people who probably won't get the same chance you have already had. And you're not even actually interested in it outside of anime? You sound like a huge asshole.
