There is literally no way fangs WOULDN'T add to a troll cosplay unless you were wearing the wrong type of fangs. Ie, they're too big for your teeth and look bad, the dental distortions don't fit, or the troll you're cosplaying doesn't match the fangs you're wearing. Megidos don't have fangs, seadwellers don't just have elongated canines, etc.

I've heard it thrown around that lowbloods have flatter teeth and highbloods have sharper. We see Feferi/Meenah/Condesce and Eridan consistently drawn with shark teeth and are unlikely to see them on Aradia, Tavros etc while midbloods might have a handful of sharp teeth, vampire teeth like Kanaya, etc.

Colour-wise, it's a bit of both. Many purples and violets look just fine irl, but photograph awfully or simply look off in some lights. It's a bitch, frankly.

Also, everyone seems to always recommend clown white but is there really that much of a difference in final result? I know a lot of people also say there's not a lot of difference, but could that have to do with application?

My guess is they probably left it that way to cut down on the volume around the neck since it already looks a little bulky. Then again thinner scarves only bother me on Roxy since it's her only accessory piece.

I haven't tried clown white but I can confirm that both kryolan and ben nye creme are very difficult to apply.

Clown white is really greasy. Can't say much about the staying power because I only had it on for a few hours. There tended to be some ruboff but it also might have been the setting powder dusting off because I sealed like crazy. I didn't think it was any more opaque than creme makeup but then again I was in a hurry (I apply with brushes).

See, I don't think it's disrespectful, I just think it's absurdly stupid. The cosplayer looks like an embarrassing idiot. The Great Wall is culturally significant, yes, but it's not culturally sensitive. This strikes me as a dumber version of what people do pretending to hold up the Leaning Tower of Pisa. If the cosplayer were doing this inside the Terra Cotta Soldier excavation, it would be stupid too, but not disrespectful. Well, disrespectful in the sense that they're laying on the floor in a crowded area and people have to walk around them, and they clearly aren't appreciating the history of what they're seeing, but it's not offensive.

Doing it at a temple? A war memorial? A battlefield or burial site? Then it would be way out of bounds.

First cosplay ever, so I'm glad it's at least passable. I know it's not amazing (like you said, horns should have been pointier, and I did have some black lipstick but it was lost until the next day when I did Aranea, and by then it was useless). Did not contour, but I was pleased overall in the shade of grey I got. Most there were either too dark or didn't wear any makeup at all.
I was happy with some of the other stuff I did though, sewed my own scalemate and made the blind cane and glasses (which were a bitch to make). Money was also a huge factor, so I ended up doing a lot myself. The only thing purchased was the white/grey makeup to mix, wig was $8 (it doesn't feel cheap though, but it could have been styled if I had known how to at the time), ironed on symbol for the shirt, painted wooden rod for the cane, cut the glasses out of old heavy plastic 3D glasses and used existing parts from other glasses to put them together, and my boyfriend made the horns because he was the one with the clay.
Anyways, yeah, could have been better, but compared to what was already there, I was feeling pretty good about my first attempt.

I haven't gotten around to do any serious make up tests as I just got my hands on a clown white after having used Kryolan's supracolor 070. I'll report back after 413, but as of right now I have this:

The main difference is that the clown white goes on thicker. It is also a more "artificial" white because of this, whereas 070 is duller. I'll come back with how it is over bigger areas and not just a patch on my arm.

Not OP, but I have never seen a Dave wig that I'm 100% happy with. I don't like the side-flippy hair that he's drawn with. Yes, he had that hair in a few frames of a flash, but his hair is different in every other style drawn of him. It looks more slicked back or actually parted to the side, not swept to the side. I wish people would try this but instead it's just millions and millions of Dave with the same side-swept wig.

Makeup question: How badly/easily/quickly does PAX crack at the elbows/on hands? I'm considering going for PAX instead of armsocks but I do like that armsocks always look smooth.

In my experience, the finger joints start to crack within an hour. Apparently other people have been able to get away with no cracking but I have no idea how they do this. I find it easier to just use another kind of grey for the tips of my fingers and palms.

Carapaces in zentai with painted expressions will always look phenomenal if it's done right. It's because they aren't supposed to be human. They're chess people with cartoonish expressions, so a zentai is really appropriate for them. Guardians on the other hand are just stylized cartoonishly, like how the kid sprites don't have arms, which is why it looks weird to see them in full zentai (especially with a group of kid cosplayers). They aren't actually faceless white creatures, they're just drawn that way.

Use Kryolan Aquacolor Soft Cream instead. Apply it in two layers and then put on the rest of your contouring/makeup. Works beautifully and self seals for the most part once it's dry.

Arm socks are a good option if you're wearing a shirt to hide the seams and have the sewing skills (or you can commission someone for pretty cheap these days). This is what I personally do for my arms.

I hear PAX is pretty good. No rub off AT ALL but you do have to 1) shave your arms 2) spend like hours trying to get it off afterward. But anon upthread says it cracks like hell on your hands.

You can also try alcohol-activated airbrush body paints? Also no ruboff but MAY crack off around the hands. Comes off somewhat easily with rubbing alcohol. I haven't personally tried this and not a lot of people talk about it, but I've had friends who use it.

But if all else fails, I think water-based body paint like Kryolan aquacolor, Paradise AQ, or Snazaroo are going to be your best bet. Just use Ben Nye's Liquiset to activate instead of water, powder with baby powder, then seal with Ben Nye's final seal/Mehron's barrier spray. Minimal ruboff! You just can't really touch...wet things. This is what I personally use for my neck/chest and sometimes my face.

Cream makeup is more prone to ruboff! But it's more opaque and if you set/seal it well enough, ruboff is not that bad of an issue.

Water based paint is your go-to, even if just for your face and neck. Some options there are brands like Snazaroo, Mehron, and Kryolan. I'm not sure how much chest you're showing, but for that and arms, you can look into PAX. You can do your whole body with water-based paint if you seal it to hell and back, but I wouldn't recommend Mehron for that since it's a little streaky. You'll want to wax or shave prior to application too, it'll make your paint look smoother. Who are you cosplaying?

I love waterbase for my face and even neck but something about the skin on the arms makes it tough - seems to absorb a lot faster and requires a lot more paint for a basic coat. PAX or armsocks is really recommended.

For legs just get welovecolors grey tights.

You get some sun through the paint but it depends on the type and the color. A Porrim I know got tanned more under her gray than under the tattoos and ended up with weird sunburn patterns

Theatrical makeup is heavy enough to block a lot of the sun. I have gotten a light sunburnt while wearing a small amount of waterbased, and my skin was red everywhere except for where the makeup was. But if you're worried put some light sunscreen on underneath and wait for it to dry before putting on your grey.

No worries. We get lots of questions about paint from non-Homestuck cosplayers. Be sure to buy Ben Nye Liquiset and Final Seal though. You'll need that to waterproof and seal each layer of paint before you apply the next coat. Two layers should do the trick, three if you have time and want to be extra thorough. And yeah, the welovecolors grey tights are a great match to both Snazaroo and Kryolan, so don't worry about the tights not working out.

i'd avoid water-based paints if it's going to be really hot. no matter how well you seal them, they can always sweat off like mine did. unless paints like ben nye just don't agree with your skin, i'd suggest using them for hot weather. once you seal it up, sweating won't be a problem.
