Alright, we got less than two months to go on this sonovabitch. A few GoHs have been announced, the usual events are up, but panels are still TBA. Who's ready to wait 6+ hours in line for their badge?

>> No.7480774

One thing I'm always happy for at Fanime is that they always have decent/good MusicFest guest(s), so I'm at least glad they still haven't fucked up that aspect. Home Made Kazoku is p coo.

Something I'm wondering though is how many people are actually picking up their badge at the Clockworks location? I heard so many people talking about doing it but are people actually doing it? Also, it's pretty late, but do you guys think volunteer spots are still open and should I go for it if so?

I've had many theories as to why fanihousing is such a mess even though it's a smaller con. Like how many rooms are actually blocked off for staff?

And how shitty is the San Jose Garden Airport hotel? I don't mind being the weekend DD and driving people back and forth, but I do care about clean towels and comfy beds. I'm hoping to make a switch around the cancellation deadline to Fairmont or Doubletree.

lol that's preeeeeetty shitty. Parking can be a pain, too.

A good amount of rooms are blocked off for staff and it's usually the closer, main hotels. But you can't room stuff and there can only be up to 4 people in your staff room.

>>7483170
>>7483163
Fanimecon needs to use their noodle and realize that people with badges and AA/industry professionals/dealers should get room priority. Sorry, but why the hell should these people worry about being homeless or sleeping in their cars for the weekend while scalpers and con shadowers party in a room? Such bullshit, no wonder this convention is going downhill.

i think the larger issue for housing is that there just AREN"T enough rooms in the hotels near the con available to meet demand. i don't think scalping is a major issue for fanime, but i do think they should put a cap on the number of rooms that can be in a person's name (like 2). i like the badge requirement, as long as it's announced early and can be implemented with artists and professional reg (which this year, it was not).

Well, it's been a week since the initial post. No movement on the website, Twitter, or Facebook since. Not terribly surprised.

Anyhoo, I got a question for youse guys - got any food recommendations? I'm particularly fond of Hoagie Steak Out, and the gyro place nearby was pretty good too. Didn't like Iguana's all that much, but I remember Pizza My Heart being decent.

Fast food you mean? There is also a hotdog place next to the Steak Out place now, and numerous milk tea/bubble tea places have opened up downtown. Don't forget about Cream, an icecream sandwich shop.

I actually just pack my own lunch or buy something in advance. There is no point wading through the crowd for an hour to get food.

Imo Downtown has tons of good/decent food places, just gotta know what you like.
There's a Old Spaghetti Factory nearby-ish if you want cheap Italian and don't mind walking. There's also a place near there called "The Market" which has a shitload (probably up to 20) of small food places if you don't mind passing by drunk people. Good if you have a group of undecisive people.
If you walk past Johnny Rockets and towards Quickly's you'll encounter Whispers, and fairly new crepe place which is both spacious and delicious (they have savory crepes and sandwiches and such too), also pretty good price for how much you can get.
If you want a cheap Denny's like place, Peanuts is a little father than everything, but it's cheap as heck. Small place though.
If you like paninis and really good cake, Bijan is right next to the Fairmount.
For bubble tea, Thirst Tea also near the Fairmount is the newest place and my favorite. They also have brick toast/honey toast.
I could go on since there are so many places to eat, but these are my favorite that haven't been mentioned/are obvious (I assume you know about Hydration since it's near the area you mentioned).

hire a company who does registration for large conventions. i go to a meeting in SF every year that easily has 75,000 attendees. they use a company to ONLY deal with reg. i think the longest i've ever waited for my badge/guide was 30 minutes when half their computers went down. every other time there's been no line, even the day before the meeting starts. they scan your bar code, pull up your info to make sure it's right, print the paper that goes inside your plastic badge sleeve, and you're done. maybe a minute tops.

hell dragoncon does an amazing job processing registration quickly...though i don't usually prereg, so i can only say that on-site reg is always quick and painless.

CREAM just opened up recently and it's actually really good. They bake fresh cookies and have fresh ice cream. Snickerdoodles, rocky road, mint chocolate, and etc.

Near Old Spaghetti Factory is this neat place called San Pedro Square Market. It's really buzzing on Saturday nights, with a lot of families and couples hanging out. Lots of good cheap food, nice bar scene and very friendly.

Peanuts is really good, but it closes usually around 7PM. Like anon said, it's really cheap. You can get a sandwich and fries for 5 bucks and it's a fairly big sized plate. Keep in mind, Peanuts is a small restaurant and it's a little grimy. But it's good wholesome food for your buck. I wouldn't call it a place simliar to Denny's. If you want a Denny's atmosphere, try Flames which is across from the MLK library. You can also get drinks there and really large portions of cake/dessert

Bijan, is a nice place for sweets but it can get busy since people are ordering their baked goods.

Thirst Tea is where all the asians hang at, so if you're into that try your luck.

I really, really wish they would do this. Tbh i feel like the line is really the only serious problem that's keeping people away. Hotels too I guess, but the problems are interconnected in that if they do reg earlier, the scramble for hotels wouldn't be as bad

>>7513636
I agree with this also. The Bay Area is huge and there's lots of friends that don't find it worth it to drive an hour or so to go to single day events. It'd probably take about an hour or so for you too then to take the light rail. If you're commuting for multiple days, I'll say it can be a little troublesome if you forget something unless you just bring a bunch of stuff with you and store it in a friend's hotel.

If you're going for one day or getting hotel then you can go for it. It takes a little longer but it's an effortless and cheap trip.

I haven't been to a con in a while, and this will be my first time at Fanime. I gotta say, I'm excited that it's a month away. It'll also be the first time I'm there independently, meaning I have the freedom to go and leave whenever I want. I know a few friends will be there, but I was wondering if people on this board usually have meetups?

I'm neutral on the idea of internet people meeting up, but I do wonder what it would be like to see real life people from a place like this in public. It was surreal enough seeing people mention restaurants like Peanuts and Bijan in downtown San Jose that I am quite familiar, so I'd imagine a meetup would be even stranger.

But besides that, how are the cosplayers at Fanime? The only con I've been to is AX and the size and quality of cosplayers there is all I know. To be honest, I"m not even sure what I'm expecting to be at this convention.

So registration is going to be different this year and I'm really hoping for the best. But this is the information I have gathered so far.

To claim your badges you're going to get a QR code when you register online. You will soon get it in an email. And yes, you can use your smartphone to show the code.

Badges will be printed on the spot as you confirm or pay for your badge. They'll have the card swiper right there in front of you. You can also pay cash. (I think)

There will be a special registration for panelists, A.A, and disabilities (just like last year).

Registration will be open all through out the con. So if you only want to go Saturday you can buy it either that day or the day before. There will be a cut off time for you to purchase it. (I just don't know the times, sorry)

Some other updates

The convention center is completely updated.
A.A is upstairs in the new section.
Registration is downstairs in the newly created area
Panels have moved to the Fairmont as well as the maid café
There is the shuttle bus again this year and will be doing stops at Double Tree (CA) and the airport hotels as well as the usual stops of the Hilton and Fairmont hotel.
Hall 1 will have some runoff of dealers and more food vendor stuff
Marriott will probably be used for speed dating and other things (I don't remember in detail)

My imput
Don't forget during the weekend there is that art festival across the street from the Fairmont. Which means food trucks galore. So keep your eyes peeled for them. I think they run the weekend or just Saturday.
Dakao is a small Vietnamese deli that has 2$ Bahn mi that are really tasty. They also have pho and other ready made foods and is about 2 blocks away from the convention. My personal favorite cheap eats spot.

I didn't like the method they used this year for A.A. They used a judge system which Imo was implemented way to late in planning. I have a feeling that they just said "fuck it" and copied CA's A.A requirements.

You gonna Park for only the day? Park in the garage attached to Psycho Doughnuts it's $5 flat for weekends(free if you spend $5 at Psycho Doughnuts) . Behind the Tech Museum there is the also a parking garage it's $7 for weekends or free if you buy something from Peggy Sue's Diner (they got cheap eats too)
Please don't forget all staff members are unpaid and really really REALLY OVER WORK AND UNDER STAFFED in almost every department even Registration we still have to pay for our rooms, food, parking etc. We are fans just like you guys. If you guys have any input after the con please write an email, I think they have a questionare somewhere or look at the forum.

More than anything this year I just want the masquerade to be back to some form of what it used to be. Karaoke contest winner concert, some sort of nerdy musical performance, that awesome emcee, then some pretty good skits with little to know technical difficulty.

Fanime's masq used to be my favorite part of the con, but a few years ago it started slipping a little more and more till last year it just fell off a fucking cliff.

I can deal with reg, I'm at the Clockwork Alchemy hotel anyway, the halls always have great costumes, AA is usually top notch and panels are a good selection and most of those are all I need. Not really big on guests unless they got someone spectacular like Takehito Koyasu or Hayami Shou (longshot, I know)

But goddamn if they fuck up the masquerade again...

You'd have to have it fit something from games or animu. Like maybe Isaac and Miria from Baccano or...well I can't think of any other anime that takes place in the 1930s.

It can be anything from dramatic to comedic skits or dances, as long as it has something to do with games or anime. Western franchises are iffy, but they make some exceptions. Check youube for Fanime Msquerade and some of the popular entries over the years will show up.

However, if this is your first Masq, then Fanime's kinda big. Like, small area sized.

Officially, no. This year you can only merge with another table if you signed up with an account.

I'm not sure unless you kinda squat or 'illegally' sit at your friend's table which I feel like most people will be doing, although that idea sounds pretty solid too. I feel like there might be a good handful of people who could give you their reg because they're out of state and Fanime is taking so fuckin long to get their shit together. How you can get around their system probably depends on how they'll be enforcing it, but again, it's a large alley and once you get in, they aren't really the strictest when it comes to quality control or whatever else. If anything, though, I don't think there's a way to loophole it- I feel like as soon as you mention or ask the staff they'll just outright tell you "no."

As for lining up, At-con Registration Day1 is like an hour or two depending if they separate you from Pre-reg. There's also no guarantee they will open at the posted time since they might have stayed up the night before dealing with Prereg. Like they did last year. Saturday waiting time is pretty bad though.

A lot of in character acting tends to be quite tame. If you see someone from the same series you are, you may shoot them a line or a quote that's relevant, but nothing more since you don't know that person and you don't know how they'll react to your angry character coming up at them and ranting out of the blue, or having that creepy yandere love interest whisper something creepy to you in the middle of a hug or something.
These guys >>7546475 either arranged this before hand, or went further into this kind of interaction naturally on their own.

I always find Monday the saddest day of the whole convention. Not because it's dead, but because it's over. I don't go to many cons, but it's the one I always enjoy going too. Hope people like my monster hunter cosplay I'm making for me and my friend.

>have friend who is gold member at Fairmont because he helps a ton of people snag rooms every year
>have friend who is handicap so best parking imaginable
>have someone deliver fanime pass right up to the hotel room
I feel like a VIP at the weeb fest.

Wait listed until now and I got the Marriott and Fairmont :)
Needed roommates and got them.
Staff privilege to also not have to worry about my badge and waiting in the horrible line for once<3 Everything worked out for once.

It was so bad. To choke. In that fashion. To the Kings.

I'm bummed that my AMV didn't make it to the finals. Does Fanime do a pre-show screening? All I care about is that my video gets shown on the big screen, finalist or not.

lol staff doesn't need to compete for a room though...There's a block of rooms reserved for staff members. Have fun staffing and dealing with shitty attendees!

They do if you have a regular attendee coming with you and staying in your room that is not staff as well :/ So yeah.
