Alright, since the only wig general that's been attempted in awhile was an arda wig(lol) one, i'm making this happen.
Ask for advice on which wig to buy or how to style one. Just ask anything about wigs.

>> No.7478542

I need help styling the bangs of a wig I have.
The character has the typical middle piece that's shaped like a V which falls between the eyes, but I can't get the "V" to make a nice sharp point that sticks together.

Just a typical Miku wig.

>>7478547
I've cut the bangs short already, and roughly shaped the V with just the scissors

>> No.7478608

>>7478561

I'm pretty sure anon asked for a picture to see what you've done so far to offer suggestions.

Chances are you've already cut it too short to do a proper "v" style like you want. Getting that style is not about shaping it to an actual "v", it's about layering. Once you cut the sides too short, they will not stick together with the rest of the section. Instead, you want to thin out the fringe to get the look you want.

To get the best effect, I think you'd need to find a lace-front wig, alternatively, get B and buy a bit of extra weft of the same colour hair from the seller, then create the lace front yourself (lots of tutorials for it from when many people tried to cosplay axel or something).

....Well if you put a gun to my head and asked me to pick either A or B without resorting to lace front wigs, then I'd chose B.

Maybe try lightening some parts with a white fabric marker (there's a tutorial for it somewhere for Inori from Guilty Crown) and then using using the extremely-watered-down-acrylic-paint method to colour the lighter parts? Sharpie or FW ink dye methods might interact weirdly with fabric marker.

Several questions here.
How do you detangle meter long wigs that like to make two knots for every one you take out? How would you keep said wig from tangling again at cons? I was thinking of using mane 'n tail detangler and then braiding it for when I'm walking around although that might get really tiring really fast.
What products would you use to style a spiky wig without leaving residue and still keeping the 'natural' fluffy look? Hair in mind is Aoba from DMMd.
If a wig keeps curling in odd way and refuses to be straightened using both hot water and a straightener, does that mean it's too thick?
And last one, how would you go about trying to make ears with hair? Something similar http://rinnieriot.blogspot.ca/2013/05/kitty-earshorns-tutorial.html, but round like a bear.
I'm kind of new to this... sorry for the mass block of text

First-cosplay-clueless-Australian-idiot here, I was just wondering what the best course of action to take would be. I am planning a Schrodinger costume but am not sure what to do in terms of hair. I have dark brown hair and don't really want to bleach my hair to dye it (don't really want it to be long term or damage my hair). Are there any short term alternatives (~1 week) that I could go with or should I just get a wig? If so are there any in particular that would meet my needs?

Thanks in advance to anyone that has any advice to offer, sorry if I did something wrong

Wigs are good for complicated styles, unnatural colors, and anything requiring thickness. The only time we really recommend using natural hair is if the character's hair is too short or too much hairline/scalp is showing.
>Is possible to straighten a wig?
Depends on the fibers. Kanekalon and Hiperlon fibers can handle heat, among others. If you can't find the type of fiber, You can try straightening a small section that won't be noticed if it's cut. If the fibers don't handle heat, they'll crimp and shrivel up, which you can cut off and hide.
You can also just play it safe and use the hot water method, which is for lower-quality fiber. Basically you just heat a pot of water to about 170F and pour it over the wig. (this doesn't work for me though, so good luck).

Yeah I would say it is a little complicated, but I have seen more complicated stuff made with real hair. Guess I'll try styling it and will se how much it lasts that way. If doesn't work for me will go for the wig.
Will try both methods in a small sections. The wig is really good-quality, but is kinda old, so probably will try to play it safe in the end.

All long wigs tangle. Long hair tangles. Shit's gonna happen. There's a few things you can do about this in a wig:
1. the fiber epic cosplay uses has been noted by many people to be easier to untangle than other brands
2. pick a wig a bit shorter than the character has, they're more managable and won't tangle as badly.
3. treat it with a product that will minimize tangling. they make silicone based wig sprays for synthetic wigs.
4. detangle it often. if you're wearing it, try to work the worst of the knots out with your fingers periodically.
5. keep it in a loose braid if you're not posing for photos.
6. make sure you get all the tangles out as soon as it comes off your head every time and treat it with the silicone spray.

FYI, if there is anything on the back of your costume that it can rub or catch on, like a bow or trim, that's going to make everything WORSE.

Either way, that's normal. It's how they add volume. I have a wig where the bangs don't have any teased fiber under them, and it looks really strange worn because of how flat they are.

Hi there! >>7483291 here.

I got the wig in the mail today. And I'm a little concerned about the color. I think we can all agree that the color of the wig is too light to be Misato's hair color (or is it an okay color? I've never done this before). Is there anything I can do to make it darker aside from returning it? (Yes, I can see it's shine city up in this mofo, but I'm not too concerned as I'm probably not going to be taking too many pictures in the cosplay.)

i'm going to need some help with keeping a long wig in a good condition. i'm doing hatsune miku, in her 'love is war' outfit. i've never ordered a wig over a foot in length before, and i've seen so many miku cosplayers with knotty and scraggly wigs. i'm a little scared! (´・Д・)」so is there anything i should know about keeping a long wig safe? pic related, it's what i ordered.

Don't buy a new wig right away (I mean, you can if you want to, but that one isn't a total loss or anything). After combing it and cutting off the excess, get a purple sharpie and look up sharpie dye tutorials, then try dying the lower sections of the wig doing that. It shouldn't take long or cost much and should darken the wig somewhat (doing the bottom would give you a cool-looking gradient too, but if you don't want that you can just try doing it on the whole thing).

Yes, it keeps it from tangling
It will not make it wavy, as wig fibers won't hold a shape just from braiding like human hair would. When you undo it from the braid you might need to pull the comb through it a couple of times to make it lie fully flat again but it will not become actually wavy.

When you're storing it, keep it braided so it doesn't tangle inbetween uses. Carry a small bottle of detangling spray (or water, if you can't get detangler for some reason), a comb, and a brush with you at all times (and for gods sake comb it near a garbage can, don't leave wig hair behind, no one wants to get it stuck on them). Comb it a few times during the day, especially if you notice any tangles starting.
And before you store it, comb it. Don't throw it into a bag right after use and leave it. You'll regret it next time you go to use it.
Good luck, Miku wigs are a terrible pain sometimes (but if you don't let it tangle, they look rad as heck).

Okay, so I've posted here before and got some phenomenal advice on how to get these pigtails to work. I'm going to make an aluminum base with screws to hold it up. Buying all of that stuff tomorrow, a proper wig head is on its way. BUT I wanted to make transportation a little easier. My plan was maybe I could attach my long wefts to the hair accessories somehow. If I could design them to open and close around the stub I am making, I could remove the long ponies to pack separately and make life easier.

My question now is... Is that a good idea? Or is it needlessly complicated? Could you guys give me some help on how to transport more complicated wigs? I don't have much experience with ponytail wigs so I'm worried that between here and the conventions it could get messed up and it will never look as good because I packed it wrong.

>> No.7488662

>>7488653
I think that sounds like a really simple and neat solution. Go ahead and make stubs and supports for those on the base wig/head mount (remember to add clips to the wig so it'll stay firmly on your head.

It's really easy to strip the hair and mesh from the clips from standard clip on ponytails. They're generally just held in by the teeth catching in the net to wrap the hair around the clip. So you could easily replace the clip with something small, round or long dependent on what will suit your mount better.

If you're working with separate wefts to make your ponytails, wig off cuts or even a wig of it's own it would again be a fairly simple task to assemble it onto relevant clips.

I love my mermaid wig. I have the beachy one. It's really easy to maintain. Like any long wig, of course it will tangle, but I find that you can just brush it out again really easily. The only problem I have with it, and this will sound like such a stupid problem, but I don't really wear it for daily wear because it's so thick. It looks great when I'm more dressed up, but if I'm just wearing a pretty casual outfit then it can look kind of disproportionate. Not sure if it's just with that one or all mermaids are the same.

same person from >>7485411 here, i have another question.

obviously miku has the back of her hair entirely pulled up into pigtails (excluding the two little clumps on the crook of her neck) but i don't think i'll be able to recreate the naturally-pulled up look with clip on pigtails. anyway, does it really matter? i know that like 90% of cosplayers with pigtails just use clip ins and leave the back of the base wig hanging, so i don't think it'll ruin my cosplay, but is there any way to pull this off? have you done it before?

You won't be able to recreate a realistic pigtail look with clips because that requires the wig to be wefted differently. It doesn't matter too much though, seeing as most cosplayers use clips anyway.

You can probably style the hair to look like it's pulled into pigtails (by combing it towards the spot you'll put them, clipping or trying it, and setting it like that) while still using clip-ins for the tails themselves. It would be a lot of work though.
If you actually use a really long wig and put it into ponytails, I doubt they would stay up. Even with a ton of pins Miku just has way too much hair put way too high.

I'm trying to find a good wig for this - with good enough bangs to do the swoop. I'm considering something like Claudia from Arda because I feel like that could look pretty, but I'm scared that the Dark Copper Red might be too dark. Anyone have advice?

Actually, I have an Arda colour ring and the Dark Copper Red is not very dark compared to chocolate brown or mahogany. I think shade wise it's closer to the warm light brown but with that red undertone.

Hope that helps. If you need to see a color comparison I can post a picture for you?

I got the "Eros" (one of the "lace front alternatives) recently, and its has a pretty weird hair line. There's a row of wefts sewn into the skin top that go slightly up and forward. I was able to successfully train the hairs forward with a blow drier, and the weight of the rest of the hair makes the hairline look a little more natural, but its definitely odd.

I'm planning a Shiny Chandelure cosplay for sometime around Halloween this year and I'm kind of looking for a specific type wig. I want it to have kind of a fade to it, but I don't want it to be as bright and dramatic as the regular Shiny Chandelure's fire is. I was hoping to find some kind of pastel orange wig with ponytail clips somewhere but none that i've looked for seem to exist. If I can't find one I'm tempted to go with an orange bob-type wig but I'd probably want that to be a fade too. The only thing I can find that is even close to what i'm looking for is pic related, but it's gross and doesn't fit in with the theme of the Chandelure cosplay i'm planning. Does anybody know where I can get a wig even remotely resembling what i'm looking for?

If you want a subtler gradient and want to spend less time than dying a whole yellow wig to be mainly orange: Get an orange wig, Uni Posca yellow paint markers, and go over the ends patiently (if you want to go the extra mile get a white one too to take the gradient even farther.) Look up general spiking tutorials and adapt them. It helps to start with a Jareth or a Punky or in general a wig that is poofy to begin with, the under fibers are slightly kinky to begin with which adds body to allow gravity defying anime shit to work. If you have a non-poofed wig it's easy enough to do some backcombing.

Got2B glued is shit. Especially for spikes. Especially for Ansem's spikes which aren't even that spiky. Any good spiking tutorial will cover this but a lot can be accomplished with just hairspray and a blow dryer, especially with today's heat resistant wigs. Got2B can be good for pinching off the ends to a point but only if you use very very little of it, you've already seen what too much can do.

My only tip beyond that is try to keep a layer of "clean" hair on top, because with lots of hairspray wigs tend to get dry and stringy looking. Doing all the heavy lifting then styling that soft pretty layer over it helps a ton.

I need an Asuka wig, but I have one problem: I can't figure out her damn hair color!

These three shots are all from episode 9 of the original series, and I just don't know which one to choose. What is her hair color supposed to be? Not straight up red, maybe light reddish brown? Certainly not bright ass party orange like most Asuka wigs I find online.

I want to go for 50/50 accuracy/realism- orange hair is a no-go for me. Also, I want a really nice wig, I don't mind shelling out the cash for good quality.

I'm not really good with reds/browns (or blues but I had a friend help me pick out the lenses already, so it doesn't matter really), which makes me super paranoid that I might pick out the wrong color.

Your method is only going to be slightly fuller than the wig you linked to. There's no special method of sewing extensions that results in the picture you posted with. The best you could do is sewing graduated layers, it will look fluffier and better but it won't look like the pic.
Really, you need a shitton of hairspray and foamcore, depending on how full you want it to be. But yes, your method would slightly fuller. You could also just buy linked wig and add foamcore.

How do you go about brushing those pink tails? I have the same wig in black and i don't want to rip any hairs out brushing it to death. Any tips?

Oh, did you find that on ebay? Because I'm pretty sure I bought a nanami chiaki wig from the same place. It's alright from what I can tell (first time cosplaying). Warning you though, the color was a bit off on mine, the top part has very little hair, and its not heat resistant at all.

>"i think i can use this for my moogle gijinka i just designed!"
>four months later
>totally redesign costume to be more victorian
>tfw victorian hairstyles are long and/or updos

Should I try to make this wig work somehow? I'm totally inexperienced with wig styling or adding wefts. Might be a good opportunity to give it a try...?

Probably a bit of stretch, but has anyone bought an Arda wig in desert brown?
The thumbnail on the color page looks perfect for what I'm looking for (a grayish/brown blend), but when choosing a wig to put in the cart, the color looks... Nothing like it. Or at least it's a shitty representation.

I don't really want to chance it, I live in Canada so returning/exchanging the wig wouldn't be worth it.

I'm trying to find a wig for this character but in white. I've looked on ebay but I keep bumping into "party city"-looking wigs. I suck at cutting wigs so I would really appreciate it if it required minimal styling.

So I just received this wig. Do you think it's good enough to wear for daily wear? I'm growing out my hair that's been colored black for years and I want something to cover up the hot mess it's going to look like. I'm going to shorten it so it's more natural and thn out the bangs, but otherwise do you think it'll be okay?

I didn't happen to sell that wig to you in a buy thread did I? If so that took a fucking long time to get across the border.

It should be fine, wear somehing on top though

I styled mine by curling the wig hair around my fingers for layers and then used hairspray for it to stay up and fluffy. I'm only having trouble with keeping the red streak in place, it's not staying together for some reason.

Akatsuki's hair is just dumb. I've tried to make a similar style somehow work in the real world and it jsut doesn't work. Save yourself from the agony and just go thick, straight-cut bangs.

Do they make "short" afro wigs? Thank you /cgl/!

I've searched high and low for a good wig for Madoka. I adore Arda's Baby Pink color for her, but don't necessarily want to pay an arm and a leg for a wig from them. Wigs advertised as Madoka wigs are usually gross earmuff looking things and what I'm hoping to find is a wig in a style like Anya from Code Grass that I could cut into Madoka's style. Most eBay sellers I've seen carrying an Anya wig use the same stolen photos so I'm a bit iffy on which one to choose from, if any. Any advice, /cgl/?

Probably a noob question, but I've got a new wig that I'd like to treat with fabric softener. It's very curly but I would rather it be straight, so would I be better off straightening it before leaving it in the fabric softener, or can I just put it in as is?

I've been working on a Yasuri Shichika cosplay for a while now, I have the perfect bodytype for it, but I was wondering if I should get a wig, or would it be possible to just get really long extensions for his ponytail? Beyond that, should I try dying in the ring on his hair and the edge lines, or do you think they're just stylized shading?

Okay, here's one straight from the 90's.
Marvel comics- Shi'ar, with hair that's supposed to resemble wings coming out of the head. I'm guessing the thing to do would be to get a shoulder length wig and find a way to flair that hair out, then add a pony tail, but how does one go about adding a skull-tight helmet like that? 90's comics, why do you have to be so impossible?
