I don't think this deserves it's own thread, so I'll ask here: does anyone know of a good place to find rare or no longer manufactured fabrics? To be specific, I really need some Casa Collection Satin in hunter green, but JoAnn's stopped producing it, and none of the stores near me had any on clearance or in remnants. Any ideas? Thanks!

I'm going to be doing a Monster Hunter cosplay in the future. I have access to all of the materials I could ever want to create pretty much all of it, but I don't know how to make these horns. There's main armor segments on it, all of which can be done easily with foam, a little bit of wiring, and good painting technique. I just don't know how to make those odd horns that jut out from all over the place. Same logic I assume applies to those teeth.

When reinforcing craft foam armor with a fabric backing, how important is the fabric that you use? Most tutorials use gauze, but would over wovens like sateen and poplin be okay?

>> No.7479099

It needs to be something that will absorb the adhesive well enough to make it sturdy. Synthetics are bad for that, you may be able to get away with muslin, but gauze will hold more adhesive.

There are two ways to go about this. One would be to paint your face silver. It won't look super metallic, but it can look okay, and gives you the bonus of actually being able to move your face.
The other way is to make a tight fitting helmet/mask. This can be made to look very much like metal, but it will be a stiff face, and not look human.

Soo,
there is a con in three weeks I'd like to attend. I'll cosplay as Naked Snake and my costume is nearly complete, but I have one huge problem:

I need a beard. I can grow one, but this takes about 2 or 3 weeks to look decent and out of costume i kinda look like a hobo with it. Normally I wouldn't care about that, but I ahve a couple of job interviews in the next weeks and I would most likely have to shave/trim heavily for them.

So is there any way to make a beard seem fuller or longer than it is? I guess it won't be too much of a problem since I'll also be using face paint, but I still hope that there's a better solution.

I have used fabric paint for this exact reason. It will not bleed as long as you don't use too much paint and do it in layers. Also use a sponge brush. You can wash it. Use painters tape to cover up the parts on each side of the stripe. It does not take the paint off. Hope it goes well!

That looks like it's either been chromed in gold or it's made from a sheet of brass and cut and bent and polished up really nice. I know that lionboogy for his props gets posterboard in super bright metallic somewhere and uses that to cover things, and that might be more in line with what you're willing to try. You could also get some really thin brass (you can cut finer gauges of sheetmetal with scissors if you're willing to sacrifice the scissors) and glue it to your foam and polish it with metal polish (I'd also suggest getting a fine triangle file just to make sure you don't leave any sharp edges). I've heard of people gold leafing props, but that wouldn't last well on the foam because of the flexibility.

I'm starting Sakura's butterfly dress (pic related).
I've posted some pics of ther skirt in previous progress threads but I'm having problems with her blouse.
How do I get those frills around the shoulder? I didn't want to have a line there, like just sewing frills to the top of the blouse. I'm searching for a way to do it in one piece.
I tought about drafting the blouse pattern normally then cutting it vertically and adding around 5 cm in each space, then sew the blouse like... pleats I guess, leaving them open on the top.
Problem is, I'm using chiffon, so it would never work out, I tought about using thermal adhesive fabric facing (is this the correct name), but would it work?

I usually overlock or zig-zag stitch the edge then flip it under and sew it normally. The trick is: Do not pull the fabric. Hold it in place firmly but don't stretch it.
Try it out before on some scrap fabric till you get used to it. Pretty simple.

You can buy unfinished rifle stocks air/bb guns or you could probably make it out of a mix of foam and maybe some pvc pipes for the bolt and barrel + scope.

I would suggest if possible or you have friends with rifles to take a look at how they behave. Rifles are pretty simple mechanically.

I know its been asked once or twice before (and I checked the archives) but I'm having issues finding a nice semi opaque bodysuit for Tharja. All the links I've gotten from people on other sites haven't panned out.

I was hoping there was a way to find one that's under $40 and not on taobao or something. At this point, I don't even care if its crotchless given the fact underwear will be under it anyway.
Also her bra and cape are supposed to be the same shade, right? So it should be a navy color? But I see a lot of people just doing black for the bra.

And yes its actually a really dark navy blue which is seen on the figure but some people do it black. The bra part a lot of people just use a bra and add a trim underneath

Those shoes are pretty cute, and it MIGHT be possible to make the skirt work, but it would require a good understanding of the fashion, which unfortunately I don't really see.
Orange can be hard to make it work especially with yellow because it can start looking bad very fast, better to coord it with pink or something.
I'm not even sure how you even got the idea that shirt would even work, like literally any random cute graphic tee would have been better. It's not even an uncommon idea or anything like look at any fairy kei coord and you just see a cute graphic tee/sweater/etc.
The legwear is far too plain and just looks kinda trashy.

Your best bet at saving yourself from embarrassment is to just maybe, y'know, google what it actually looks like and copy outfits until you actually get the fashion.

Don't make those out of rubber boots, the shape is wrong. Also, the vinyl rubber of the boots won't hold paint well.
If you don't feel confident enough to sew boot covers, I would do the following: get some ankle boots with the appropriate heel/toe shape, cut some cuffs out of pleather (so the texture's the same), hotglue them on (tuck them in), paint everything blue (acrylic paint + fabric medium + heat-setting), and then glue on some gold bias tape.

At this point it looks finished, has the paint, etc., which means it's too late to resin/fiberglass/reinforce. You want to do that once you've got the basic shaping done so that you can clean up any bumps or drips and then paint on top. Also the resins can eat into the foam and destroy it, if you decide to do something like that in the future use cardstock like the halo guys do.

I am about to make my first two-piece mold to make copys of my ebony & ivory props. I have read tons of tutorials, watched videos etc but I am still left with some questions because the materials are so expensive and I am simply horrified to fuck up.

My questions:
- I intend on using Mold Star 16 fast; how broad do you think the silicone needs to be on the sides in order to keep its shape?
- In some tutorials, I have seen air vents added to the molds. Is this usual? Do I really need them?
- I want to use Smooth Cast ONYX. Is it better to use the fast or the slow variant?
I am a bit scared the fast variant might have tons of bubbles in it due to having to mix and pour it so fast (pot life is only 2.5 minutes).
-Any tips and experiences are welcome!

Look at BlindSquirrel's build (http://blindsquirrelprops.com/devil-may-cry-ebony-and-ivory-pistols-2/)), I don't think you want a two-part mold for casting anything as complex as a gun. You'll get bubbles in the trigger guard. Like, you can mold it in two halves, but cast each half separately and then assemble them after the resin has cured, it'll save you air-vent planning/leaking at the seams/overall grief.
- Use the slow variant. Fast variant is for people doing mass-production.

I know how to make the armor pieces, but I'm not sure how to easily affix them to me. I have a pink zentai suit to wear. Would I just have to flat-out velcro every single piece to me at the con, or might there be other methods?

I'd really prefer not to do anything at-con (bad experiences, constantly) and want to avoid it if I can help it.

I was thinking of making them a kind of digi-grade leg where the metal one would have my toes where the joint is. Covered in maybe some foam painted to match and the lower bit made of wood painted the same? If posed right with that leg it might not even be noticeable?

Sorry for crappy picture. I'm on my lap top.

Also I'm 5ft 9 so this will most likely bump me up into the 6ft+

How do I pretend to have big boobs with a cutout as large as this one? I thought about using those sticky boob cups but they have a middle clip in them that's hard to hide.

Also, can I get some fabric recommendations? I'm leaning towards 4-way stretch spandex but will I be able to make a foofy skirt (even with a petti) and decent ruffles with spandex? imo spanex's too lightweight for a ruffled effect but I'm not confident about making a tight fitting bodice with nonstretch fabric without weird puckers.

Very high budget. This is my main plan but the biggest obstacle really is being able to pull off without my parents knowing. (I know, but I can't help it.)

Aside from that I'm thinking about going as Armin from SNK but I need to figure out how to get blue contacts (never used contacts myself, only glasses.) and where to get the boots (or make them if needed.)

A friend of mine went as Jean last year and made some last minute maneuver gear out of foam and I'm thinking about going the same route.

I have a lot of cardboard that I can probably wrap in aluminum foil but I'd rather not focus on two projects at the same time.

Alright, I had a look at their page, and I pretty much only have one question:

Have you ordered from them before? Paypal is very convenient, however being that we're almost mid-April, I'm wondering how long it would take to receive the items before July. I've ordered other cosplay stuff in the past that didn't take long to arrive, but it was usually through Amazon.

Also do you recommend purchasing all accessories from them? Wondering about where to get shoes as well, although I know a shop where I can perhaps get matching mary janes.

This isn't cheap at all, wow. I'm pretty glad I saved up enough beforehand. I greatly appreciate your help, by the way.

I will (eventually, probably not gonna make her till 2015) have the same problem, anon. I figured I'd smish my boobs together as much as possible and fill in the rest with cutlets. As for fabric, Spandex World/House sells heavyweight spandex that would probably ruffle OK. I feel like I might make the skirt and sleeves out of something non-stretch and just dye everything to match, though.

I've searched pretty much everything you could for these on ebay and found nothing. The picture is from an etsy shop, but I'd really like to avoid spending $40 with shipping on a pair of cosplay glasses.

Glass paint can work, as long as you paint it evenly. You might want to practice a bit before doing the lenses.

I would use a combination of methods.
First method is elastic, which you'll have to either buy in the right color or dye pink (use RIT, it'll take). For the pec/lat armor, make some kind of harness out of elastic (two crossing loops to make X shapes front and back). Affix the armor pieces to this: if they're foam you can use hotglue, otherwise make "belt loops" on the back (I use pieces of cable-tie) and run the elastic through these loops before sewing it together. You could do the same thing with bands of elastic for the paired armor plates on the biceps/forearms/thighs/calves.
For the armor over the deltoids, and the circular pieces over your hips (unless it hangs off the 'belt' armor?), I would do a single jumbo snaps under the center of each piece, so it can rotate as you move. Handsew one half to the zentai and one half to a scrap of fabric, and glue the one on the fabric to the underside of the armor. You can hotglue the snap directly but sewing to fabric first = more surface area = better hold. I'm going to assume you made your armor out of something lightweight like foam, don't do this with fiberglass or it will sag and look ridiculous.

>> No.7495391

>>7494351
When you pattern the top, include padded cups; you'll have to cut them up, but it'll give you something solid and boob-shaped on the sides. Sew a clear strap to anchor them together across the cut-out. Fill empty space in center with cutlet-magic and contouring makeup.
As for the skirt, a double circle skirt over a petti would probably work even in spandex, and you can flat-line the spandex to another fabric if it's too limp.

I'd say a combination of both, depending on how intense you need the volume. Start with the heating iron and then go around doing some backcombing and hairspraying. Unless you want to reuse the wig for something else you don't have to worry about undoing the backcombing later like normal hair so you can get in a really solid foundation.

I've never cosplayed before, despite being a fan of cosplay since I was a wee preteen, now as I approach age 22 as well as my local con's prereg dates, I decided to take the plunge.

for my first time I want to cosplay school uniform Asuka. I have everything but the actual uniform (including the official Cospa interface clips, fucking expensive shits), and since I can't sew, I want to buy it.

Problem is, I want the best one I can get, and so far all the sites I can buy from without using an SS/don't use stolen stock photos just look iffy in terms of the uniform construction and color.

For example: the proportions are off, the skirt part is pleated all the way around instead of box pleated, the shirt's collar is the wrong style, etc. The most noticeable issue I see is with the color- I've seen them range from light teal to almost navy blue.

I found pic related, but the article links back to a Japanese site (http://www.sekai-seifuku.org/)) that just looks like an empty calendar-layout page with a bunch of "NO IMAGE" stuff everywhere.

So I guess my question is, does anyone know where I can get a really nice quality one like this? I have standard measurements so I won't need custom sizing, and I know a tailor if I need anything altered.

Depends if you want to go realistic or cartoony.

If you want cartoony, you'll need a foam core for the top and I'd recommend maybe bits of foam for the curls. Connect and shape with wire, paint in a color close to your wig color, cover it with hair.
If you want realistic, tease the tops and brush hair over them to hide the teased parts, then just spiral-curl the bottoms.

anyone have tips to do Tharja's neck thing? I've seen so many people with folds in their fabric and I've seen people using thicker material that just looks weird. How do I make it not look dumb?

>>7500847
Pattern it out on your own neck first. Anytime I make a collar with a piece that has to extend to the neck/shoulders it's impossible to make it with one piece. Get some paper, make a pattern, try the paper on, check how it looks with some scrap fabric etc.

To keep it from folding get the super thick interfacing they sell for stuff like making handbags.

Hey cgl, I've got a wig I can use. (http://shop.cosplay.com/rose.html ) (but in royal blue)I originally used it for lucina from fire emblem awakening, but I have to go overseas so I cannot risk certain parts of the cosplay in travel (sword, armour pieces, etc.) but I really love this wig and want to cosplay when I'm overseas.

Is there another character I can use for this? Preferably no cutting of the wig and one that will pass through customs without questions asked. If I don't know the original source material, I'll make sure I am by the time I wear it. ) ) but

I plan on making a BigBand cosplay, and I was looking for some suggestions on how to do the legs. I plan on making some sort of leg armor, but I have no prior experience in doing so, so I'm not quite sure how to go at it design wise. My main concerns are it it staying on my legs, and the ball-like knee-joint.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Do you want them to move on their own, or have them so you can pull them in when you want to move? I can't remember/find the tutorial, but I there's some out there for both types if you search for Angel Sanctuary or Clover cosplays. Don't know if you need a wing tutorial, but the Dragoon wings always kind of remind me of these (from Angel Sanctuary): http://www.teamblasecosplay.com/tutorials/kurai-wings

Id make the base foamboard with the support rods and then fill in the areas the foamboard doesnt get with expanding foam and just shave it away. After that just seal the foam and paint

It would be light and sturdy and you'd get a good paint finish depending on how well you seal the foam

I'm planning on doing a genderbend of Ryoji from P3 for my first handmade cosplay, and I was just wondering if the skirt has a specific name? Is it really just called a jumper skirt? I'm seeing a lot of different kinds when searching them up and I'm completely clueless when it comes to actual clothing names other than the basics you see at malls.
Also, what kind of fabric would be suitable for the scarf? I'm was thinking fleece would look too childish but I really don't know what other fabrics would be suitable for one.

Coming from this thread: >>7498091

Looking to cosplay Shiroe from Log Horizon. Found costume here http://www.cosplaymagic.com/log-horizon-shiroe-cosplay.html for $120 and I've been told it's pretty awful. Being new to cosplay, I don't have an eye for quality.

Also suggested was this http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.28.CECeo6&id=36819506424# but Taobao continues to boggle my mind and keep me too cautious to try it out.

It was suggested that I try to make my own costume. I think the only real difficulty would be making the cloak. So, any suggestions? Pic related for any who don't know the character.

>> No.7503041

>>7503023
If you're "new to cosplay" you'll find difficulty all over the place, but don't despair. As for the cloak, you won't have a pattern so you'll have to play around with the pieces and probably waste a lot of fabric. As for the collar, thick interfacing is your absolute best friend, and even some kind of a support construction in the fabric perhaps, though I've never had to do a collar that huge before so I dunno totaly

!!! Oh my goodness LOGH cosplay.
If you want to do a good job, get a brown lacefront and ventilate it add silver wefts near the hairline. There are plenty of tutorials for adding streaks, ventilating, etc (maybe look up one for Eridan from Homestuck and modify accordingly). A wig that already has those colors would be hard to find unless you want to use a Rogue from X-men wig and look like shit. If you fuck up this cosplay I won't forgive you anon...
