So who's going to MTAC this year? It'll be my first time going and I'll be with a group of friends. Discuss what you're cosplaying, panels you'll be going to, potential meetups, stories, etc.

>> No.7469702

Not much in here, so I'll give you a bump.
I went to it last year, and it was a lot of fun. This year, however, the hotel complex that hosted last year, and many years before, isn't hosting this year. In short, new area.
Also, don't take everything I say for fact, this is all from my friend's mouth.
As for this year, I don't know what I'm cosplaying as yet. My friend has a cosplay for me. As for panels, probably some yuri panels and whatever I get dragged into.
No meetups currently.

A word of advice:
>Some boys do really, really good girl cosplays.
Don't be fooled.
Unless you like traps, which is cool too.

>> No.7470186

They just posted the schedule, so I'm excited

sorry to burst your bubble, but I didn't see any Yuri panel. I do believe there is a yaoi panel though. Its basically the same thing. You should check it out.

I'm almost finished with my costume. Its mostly just a few details and painting them 3D printing the last major part on thursday. Hopefully this new venue will work out ok and won't be to crowded. Last year was a little crowded but I blame the line waiting to meet Norman Reedus at the Horror con. Defiantly going to the cosplay contest, might compete if they will allow my costume (i'm not sure I meet the rules)

>> No.7470724

was there drama with the staff? why the change in venue

also, I'm dissapointed that they didn't do a fedora themed ball as a followup to their MLP ball last year.
It would of been amazing
"no formalwear needed, just a classy hat"

and they're shoving vic micdingdong down our throats as well.

>> No.7470831

>>7470724
In the last thread somebody who knows some MTAC staff said that it was probably because of damage to the hotel (broken rotating door/broken elevator/and several rooms had to be steam cleaned)

>> No.7470989

I'm happy to see that there are no general random panels in the schedule this year.
Females ages 18-24, I can't tell you what stormtrooper it is once he's in costume, but if he tries to give you his phone to add him on facebook, decline and say you'll do it later. He's not fedora creep, but nice guy, disguised date creep.

>> No.7471044

Ugh, I have a feeling this year will be crazy crowded with this smaller hotel. Not looking forward to that part, especially since this year my costumes are all heavy/hot. I also miss the para panels. I liked watching people wave their arms around like idiots.

Luckily I'm just recycling my Katsucon cosplay so I don't have to worry about that. Doubt anyone will recognize it at a con like MTAC though.

The crowd is the thing that scares me. As far as just people hanging out goes, it should work itself out since they're capping attendance, but that won't stop popular events/areas from being even bigger clusterfucks than usual. Fortunately for me I usually only go to smaller events.

Anyone know what they're going to do about parking? If you're staying at the main hotel, you're good to go, but where exactly is everyone supposed to park? Just as I was typing this someone on Facebook said this:
>Here is an MTAC Truth I beg everyone to spread:
Do NOT park at The Avenue, the shopping center next to the con hotel! You will be towed! This is The Avenue's policy not MTAC. There will be shuttle service from the overflow hotels and overflow parking lots available. More information coming very soon!

I'm skipping out on my larger cosplay props just because I don't wan the small space/large crowd to mess with it.

I've got a room one mile from the con. It's just me, so there's an extra bed and couch open, if anyone needs somewhere to crash for free. I'm heading down on Thursday, and leaving Sunday.
Anyways, I plan on going as Hunter S. Thompson. Nothing fancy, but it's still a costume. This will be my first year going alone, so if anyone wants to hang out, lemme know.

Just a few more days. Even though it's already been said, just gonna help out some fellow seagulls:
>reminder that you can't park at the main hotel unless you have a room under your name
>reminder that if you park at The Avenue as an MTAC attendee you will get towed because The Avenue folks are greedy jews.
>reminder that the Chamber of Commerce right across the street from the hotel will have a lot open for the weekend starting thursday at 5pm (spots are limited, get one while you can)
>reminder that if you're at an overflow hotel they'll shuttle you for free as per MTAC's own funding, so no need to worry there

Also, I hear a lot of the shit staff members have been purged since last year (though a few of them still linger). Hopefully that's true.

Anyway, I'm excited. Cosplay's ready, I'm not broke, and I got crash space in the main hotel. Sucks that I'll probably pass by some of you without realizing it; it's hard to find cool people at cons in these parts. Hope you all have a good time.

Yeah, they were told that they can't come to the new nashville convention centre unless they put down a ridiculously huge deposit. Apparently they were concerned over how much we damaged the old con centre in 2013 O.o

Heard from two people who are working staff that they asked for a $5 million deposit to use the new con centre, which is obviously why they had to move. Don't know if that number is real, but it's crazy nonetheless.

First time attendee here. Disappointed with this con overall. The venue is just too small, and there seems to be some problems with them cancelling things last minute, like the Halo tournament, or opening late "because some of the dealers seem to still be sleeping!". I also wasn't allowed to walk in the gaming room because I had a tiny purse on that wouldn't even fit a controller. I wouldn't leave it unattended so I turned around and walked out. It was impossible to even look for a couple of minutes at anything in the AA because there was a huge clusterfuck of people and staff constantly yelled at people to keep traffic moving. Once the Dealer Room opened, you had to stand in long lines that they kept shifting everywhere causing you to wait longer because of confusion.

Akaicon is great. The con heads are really great people who legitimately just want to make the best convention they can. Would recommend.

Anyways, my Friday here's been uneventful. Had to go back to my hotel (not the Embassy) cuz the bf started feeling bad. We'll be coming back later tonight though.

Thursday was great though. While standing in line to grab our tickets, a few people ahead of us - one dude, a few ladies - were having a conversation about corsets. I joked with my boyfriend to try one on, which he was TOTALLY against (one of those hurr me macho no dress no makeup ever types) and the dude overheard. It turns out he works for Timeless Trends, and not only did he let me and a friend try on a few corsets they had on hand, but he also somehow convinced my boyfriend and his buddy to try one on too. Long story short, they now love wearing corsets. So my Thursday was basically great. Hope tonight's fun too!

Oh, nothing much; just that the old Con-Chair, Lucas Levertt was well known for fucking teenage con goers (even though he's married and has a kid), to the point to where he'd actually book himself several "fuck rooms" around whatever con hotel MTAC was at, so he could have more freedom in pounding little girls.

Which, of course, would cause problems when staff ACTUALLY needed him, because they never know which room to call.

MTAC staff has some fucking bonkers stories. But, then again, it was founded by a group of BDSM swingers, so stuff like this is bound to happen.

>> No.7507182

Long time MTAC goer and native of Murfreesboro here:

To me the con wasn't as good as it could have been because staff didn't really put much thought into the venue aside from "yep; it can hold a bunch of people" and didn't think of how to make the panel rooms and the hallways work. If you'll notice, there was ZERO con security there; as in: The guys who would yell at you for just standing in the middle of the hallways and kept the lines and hall traffic sane at every other MTAC.

Honestly, if they actually got their shit together and really tried to work with their space, they could make the Murfreesboro venue work.

And they has better, because MTAC has basically been booted out of the Nashville from everywhere big enough to hold it but Opryland Hotel, which would end up being "MTAC Gold Member Edition" due to us probably having to pay Opryland prices for EVERYTHING.

I'm glad the Vash won the part of the contest. The Sephiroth should've won. The chick-pony-whatever didn't deserve 1st place. Like, at all. No one applauded her at first, then did it out of courtesy. The Garridos was pretty cool, and the Isaac was also really good. Also, surprised the twins didn't win something, but the couple as madhatter and his woman deservedly won. Most of those are from butthurt Nashvillians who were mad that they had to drive for 20 minutes to go to a convention.

People whined about the lines being long, but they've ALWAYS been long. Same thing with the dealer room. Had to wait in line for the dealer room on Saturday? HOLY SHIT, WHO'D HAVE FUCKING THUNK IT'D BE FULL ON THE BUSIEST DAY?

Shit going down at the rave? That's an every year occurance, my friend.
The only thing to be upset about is the small hallways. There were a small amount of panels because they were short on panel room space, and JESUS FUCK, WE DON'T NEED 17 SnK, 13 HETALIA, AND 70 HOMESTUCK PANELS AT AN ANIME CONVENTION WHEN THE SAME PEOPLE HOST A GENERAL NERD CONVENTION; GET THE FUCK OVER YOURSELVES.

tl;dr The con was just like it is every year, but we were spoiled by the Nashville Convention Centre and then took it out on Murfreesboro because con staff fucked up our reputation in Nashville.

Nobody's mad about having to drive; the catastrophe was parking/shuttling when you got there.

It was less so the lines' lengths and more so the horrifyingly disorganized management of them. I shouldn't have to explain why.

Everyone and their dog expected the rave to be shut down, that's not a big deal anymore. People just whine about it because they can.

Few panels is fine, but only a couple of them weren't lame as shit. You're not wrong but you're retarded if you think those are the only possible panels that could have existed.

Hey I was FF7 Cloud on fridat and Marth on Saturday!

I skipped out on the contest because of the lines, I didn't want to waste my Saturday ditching out on my friends just to compete.
That being said, Yu-Gi-Oh panels were cool and I fanboyed right the fuck out.
Venue was super pretty even if it was crowded.
Dealers actually had cool stuff and everyone seemed to be having a good time.

Did anyone else encounter that douche in a Servbot hat at the rave? Dude put hands on me 8 times to actually physically move me so he could get through. Where was he going that he had to go in and out of the crowd so much? I only asked because everyone I asked afterwards knew who I was talking about haha.
Also the YuGiOh duel panel was super anticlimatic, but whatever, I'll be back next year, had tons of fun and everyone I talked to was so nice! Did anything cool happen Sunday?

Seriously, if you guys have real complaints or issues with the con, post it on the forums or go do that survey they post every year. They're not gonna get any better if no one tells them what's wrong.

The only real consistently awful thing I remember after 7 years was the long-ass lines. The only reason things were so pants-on-head retarded this year was that we were in a newer and smaller venue. I was sick of the getting moved around bullshit too, and made sure to tell staffers that shit wasn't acceptable. At least they had their heads on straight by Saturday night.

As far as panels go, I went to quite a few and enjoyed them all. If you ever go to a panel where the guy's just sitting there being boring and reading a slideshow off verbatim, let a staffer know so they can talk to him, or better yet, say something to him (nicely). There's a real concern with people just hosting panels to get in for free, and they're trying to cut down on that shit.

Personally, I had a damn blast, and though it wasn't perfect I'm hoping they've learned a lot about the venue and will fix the problems next year.

Missed this. Some brony chick dressed as Chaos won it. Admittedly, her costume was pretty fucking good, and she supposedly made it 100% by hand, which is always a big bonus to judges.

That being said, the winner is almost NEVER really the best costume there, and the judges usually fuck something up, so it's not surprising to see a lot of "why the fuck did they win". REALLY sad they did away with the categories, it was a good opportunity for newer cosplayers to win amongst the pros.

All in all it wasn’t the worst convention I’ve been to, but for a con that has been running over 15 years it was a major setback. Things were missing and felt rushed or forgotten.
Let me put the con in perspective of last year.
There were about 9,500 attendees in 2013, so reasonably you’d expect around 10,000 at the next year, right?
MTAC ’13 had 71,180 sq. ft. of function space.
MTAC ’14 had 43,000 sq. ft. of function space.
That’s 40% smaller.

Anyways. Same complaints as everyone else I guess. Weird lines. Super crowded. I had fun overall, but yeah. I loved the guests, and there were plenty of panels I enjoyed.

See like, honestly? I feel like the smaller venue was better for the con. At Devil's Dozen, I felt like things were really impersonal. Everyone was sticking to their own groups. There wasn't a lot of social interaction, everyone was kinda... cold. Cliquey, is the way my friends put it, especially compared to GMX the year before.

I got a lot more of the close, social feel from In Love. Even though we had to dial back to a smaller venue, I feel like it was overall beneficial to the feel of the con.

Not knowing the line was outside the fucking hotel (wtf?), we lined up outside the door. Because that's generally where lines begin. The staff member at the door started flipping out and saying that there's a line somewhere and he didn't know where it is, as more and more people asked where the line was and we told them that the staff didn't know. Eventually so many people were lined up with us and pissed off that the guy started crying and let us in.

No, the only reason we didn't get towed is because we lucked out. A friend was at his car and saw them coming with the trucks, so he called us and we were able to run back and move the car before they got to it.

GMX isn't really my thing. Went a couple of years ago and thought it was the biggest waste of money I'd ever spent. And I know some of the guys who run Akaicon and think they're a bunch of asshats. Was it actually any good last year? I assumed it would be full of a bunch of high school weebs, knowing some of the people associated with it.

I'll keep going to MTAC, because it's the local con all my friends go to, but I'm not going to expect much from it. For a good con, I'll go to AWA and Momo.

I parked at the commerce center the first day, and left my car there the whole time. Rode with some friends instead.

I just parked at the Best Buy across from it and walked there.

I can't be the only person getting sick of this TV head shit. Is it from a manga or game or is it a stupid tumblr thing?

Did anyone get towed at this con? because I've had awesome parking the whole weekend and live 10 min away. There was always a spot right in front of the main entrance I parked at everyday and whenever I left for food. I got really wasted Saturday and had to spend the night at a friend's room, but I found a parking pass on the floor randomly that night.

we parked in the grass all 3 days, surrounded by others.. I remember them announcing that they were going to tow untagged vehicles

We saw a ton of cars getting towed. Like Friday, we saw them towing cars parked at the bank in front of the convention center. Then Saturday, they were towing cars that were double parked at the Commerce Center lot because the bus couldn't get through.

I don't know for sure beyond that, though.

Akai-con...a lot of people have mixed opinions about it. I've got a bit of a bone to pick with them, but I already posted that in this thread. (Found here >>7504724)

I'm feeling a little more reasonable right now, so I say only go to Akaicon if you've got a free weekend and you live close enough to make a commute.

My guess is stupid tumblr shit; they have a bunch of pictures of TV-head people, and none of the tags gave any context.

I'm going to say it,

I don't want to go to Akai-con because of the dude that runs it. I know he doesn't represent the con, but the idea of feeding his ego is... yeah I don't like it.

I was in the risque too. They warned people not to show ass, and made the other girls put duct over the bottoms of their ass? They didn't tell us about covering your entire ass until everyone showed up for the risque.

Anything you can tell us 'bout the guy running Akaicon?

>> No.7523403

>>7523279
not that anon, but I don't have anything against him. He's a really nice, chill dude. At mtac he visited the hotel room I was staying in several times and we just had legitimately nice conversations that didn't revolve around anyone in particular. Whenever the subject was Akaicon they really only talked about how they could make it better and fix what needs fixing.

I get why one would see him as egotistic since he's so outgoing, but he doesn't come off as conceited or anything. I dunno. I feel like that anon has bad impressions of him, if not a weird relationship or something. Personally I think he's just trying to create a con that's as not-shit as possible, and have fun while doing it. There's literally only been one Akaicon, too, so it's not like they don't have room for improvement.

For what it's worth, I promise I'm not being a shill. I just happen to be around him a lot since my friends know him well and help run cons.

Yeah, yeah. I still hate most of the department heads working under him. Seems like Akai has potential to be something more than an excuse to get drunk with friends and they're just holding it back.

Also, what the fuck, I'd help deliver but I still can't find any photos from the contest. Found an extremely shit video and that's it.

There's not that much. People mad about the venue being so damn small, and people anxiously waiting for cosplay pics. That's about it.
