The trick is to add enough detail and alluding to the original character instead of just no wig + yellow skirt + yellow bra + ears + tail = PIKACHU!!!!!

Now if you made a simple yellow dress without pockets on the breast or a weird collar or anything, and you sewed pikachu's brown strips on the back, wore yellow tights and yellow shoes, painted on (with quality, bright body paint, not makeup) red circles to your cheeks, maybe color the tip+nostrils of your nose black, style the yellow wig with spikey bangs to match the lightning motifs and pointy ears+tail. Now THAT would be an alright pikachu cosplay

I actually really dislike things that do anthro gijinka, the tail and ears are too much, just the ears would be fine, but I think it takes away from the point of gijinka to do too much animal stuff with it.

At that point it isn't purely humanized, true. I enjoy anthro myself, so I like having the extra details.
The black nose is definitely a maybe on the border between humanized and anthro, but the cheeks need to stay. That's pikachu's defining trait. Grossly exaggerated blush if someone really really wanted to keep it human levels of normal, but it's got to be there.

If the character has props, definitely incorporate it into the design. Having something specific shows that you put work into the outfit and also actually made something.
Having a group also helps with what you were going for, too. Here's the cutie crusaders with their capes.

I have a hard time liking MLP gijinkas that aren't any of their outfits/costumes (gala gowns, pinkie's chicken outfit, etc). A lot seem lazy. Buying every piece can come together to look like just an outfit. Though if you're doing "mlp inspired outfit" like with those "I wore green skinny jeans and a purple bustier so I can feel sort of like Ariel while in street clothes" types, I'm all fine and dandy with it. I just wish they'd say "I'm dressed as applejack" rather than "I'm cosplaying as applejack." I'm nitpicking, but I want the general public to think of cosplay like those ridiculous self-constructed armors you see at Blizzcon.
Inspired outfits are nice, though. It gives them a chance to express their love for the character and to have other people at the con come up and say, "hello. I see you like mlp. I also like mlp. Let us become friends." Which is one of the reasons I really like cosplay, honestly. It's a great icebreaker.

But MLP outfits/cosplay are so bland. What have they been like lately, though? I feel like the hype has died down, and I haven't collected any new cosplay pictures for nearly two years.

I like the pinkie's in pic related. It's obvious that the made it, it feels cartoony and like something pinkie would wear. Zecora looks good too

Always use a wig for this, and put the effort in to making it look good. The ponies in particular are most recognizable by their colors and their hairstyle.
No wig aid in the 'looks like street clothes' style

Look up gijinka fanart, but view them objectively. A lot of them will look like the character through artstyle and expressions. Take a hard look at what they're actually wearing and how it'd translate to real life

Oh, of course. Yeah, I left out cutie marks because I figured that was a given. But it does need to be said. It's nice to figure out a way to incorporate it nicely into the outfit, not just slapped on. Like this Celestia looks great.

Yeah, vinyl scratch. Here's a cap of the wig, white slim fit chinos and a white turtleneck are what I'm doing for the body pieces.

I have no idea what to use for the cutie mark. it's black eighth notes. I was considering electrical tape or iron-on transition paper since I don't want to ruin the pants. I think tape would look cheap though.

Materials to hand make the glasses are coming in the mail today, HoneyColor is shipping Super Pinky Bright Reds soon, and I made the horns and ears out of crayola model magic (still drying)

With mid-brown skin I think Babs or Apple Turnover would be really neat to pull off, although I've never seen a green wig pulled off well. Chrysalis would be great because there's so much detailing to be done with that elder look about her! Luna is awesome too, there's been a lot of great Lunas around lately.

Thanks, I haven't styled it yet, plan on hanging it upside down on a styrofoam head, and hair spray as straighten it. This is my first cosplay as well so any tips will be well received
