What is /cgl/'s opinion on the vintage/pinup look?

To me, this looks like more authentic and adult versions of lolita.

I really love it, but then people ruin it with rockabilly and I cry on the inside. Especially fat girls, they seem adamant that rockabilly makes them look sexy and cheeky retro. It looks trashy, you can still do something similar that isn't.

Vintage and pin-up aren't the same thing.
Pin-up emphasizes 50s sex appeal, vintage is a catch-all term that could mean any era from "she is showing her ankles and wearing strong makeup, how scandalous!" to "I have really thin eyebrows and listen to jazz"

>> No.7360621

Going along with OP's pic, I do really like the whole 40s/50s housewife aesthetic, especially the silhouettes, color palettes, and hair styles. I could drown myself in a whole wardrobe of mid-20th-century (both historically accurate, and modern inspirations) feminine fashion.

The bolder, more cheeky, "ooh look at how strong and independent I am in my red lipstick and victory curls" rockabilly look isn't as appealing to me.

>Especially fat girls, they seem adamant that rockabilly makes them look sexy and cheeky retro.
I've been guilty of encouraging a friend to kind of look into this. She's heavy and huge bust and is trying to ease into Lolita and it looks hideous because she tries to squeeze her breasticles into too-small JSK with a cardi over and is too fat to sit with her feet together.
Crossed legs, stockings + pumps and her cardi over a circle skirt ~would~ be an improvement.
(I'm sorry other pretty glam girls, I'm likely terrible for doing that)

I think chubby women can look really cute in actual retro fashion (the defined waists and full a-line skirts are very flattering), but not that sort of "edgy" Hot Topic rockabilly with badly dyed hair, tats, and whore makeup that everyone tries to do.

Modcloth is really bad for it. Every time I see someone wearing rockabilly I want to tear my eyes out.

The shape of the dresses is not so bad, it's when they add everything else and then have the audacity to call it classy elegant vintage because it's a dress and was called "rockabilly style"

Just put a nice blazer or jacket with cute bows and details on it

I like the retro thing, and have been trying to get my school to do a retro fashion day (its a trade school and we wear uniforms but often have special theme days). But I know someone's going to ruin it with pin up bullshit and we'll never be able to have it again.

I like the pre-WWII looks of old Hollywood, casual flapper outfits with cloches and even Edwardian frocks. I also like the 60s mod fashion, like >>7360574 said that's a whole lot of different styles and they're all 'vintage'.

Naturally I don't wear them all as they were, but draw inspiration from it or maybe wear full outfits on special occasions. The only Edwardian thing I wear is coiffures and the absolutely-no-makeup-at-all makeup. I do have one formal dress from that period, and it's really elaborate and beautiful.

Are you me? I wear Edwardian hairstyles almost every day.

I love vintage fashion, but I can't see the appeal of pin-up. Pin-up girls were usually dressed either in swimwear/lingerie or regular 1940s/1950s clothing. I don't like how pin-up has become synonymous with "victory rolls and retro clothes in flashy colours".

And it's not 'just 1930s fashion', hemlines in the 20s were lower and women's clothes had a straighter figure, less emphasis on the bosom etc. In the 30s, the female figure was back in focus and women wore different undergarments.

I'm having trouble finding tutorials, but I can tell you what I do to achieve something similar to pic related:
> separate hair in four thick strands
> take one of the two strands framing your face, twisting and pinning the ends to the crown, creating a wave over your ear (I don't really know how to explain this better, sorry!)
> do the same with the other strand
> by now you should have two loose waves over your ears and the rest of your hair cascading down your back
> separate each of the two strands into two strands more
> take the "inside" strands, twist and pin them (separately, like two loose buns) low on your head
> take the other two strands and twist and pin them so they cover the space between the hair you pinned first and the two buns

I find that it looks better if you twist your hair around your finger, hold it against your head and pin it a bit randomly so it will look less like a spiral and more like a flower.

Sorry if this was a bit confusing, English is not my first language!

Granted people are larger in general now. The average height has changed too. Most of the dresses we have at this museum would need to be worn by women about 5'4" and have an average waist around 20-24". I would say the modern average height woman is about 5'8" now and would ideally have around 28-32" waist. So that's pretty proportionate growth.

I offered to clean it out for a friend and she told me I could have anything I found within reason. The funny thing is, the dress fit her perfectly back when she wore it but she had MANY crinolines under it so the skirt was huge. It fits me almost perfect right now without anything under it but I'll get something to go underneath it and puff it out a bit because the ruffles look so much better that way. Lovely dress. I realize you are planning on drycleaning it, but if you want to try to yourself I can't suggest soaking it in a solution of bakingsoda and water highly enough.

I was given a vintage wedding dress and the fabric was falling to bits but the lace was still really nice an gorgeous! The only problem was that it was mildewed and stained with wine.

Several soaks later and then a thorough rinse and the lace was a soft, smelled nice and a pretty cream color!

If I have a vintage brand I particularly like I'll do a saved ebay search and have it send me e-mails every day.

If you like 50's style stuff there is plenty of 80's and early 90's dresses that have a very 50's vibe and are less expensive. Also alot of 50's dresses are unlikely to fit you well unless you have the right undergarments to go with them. The bra shapes are very different now.

If be reluctant to even offer her a gym pass to my gym. She'd take my head off! She's very snarky about it, alternately lamenting that her boobs are too big for lolita yet cannot go the length of a single social gathering without mentioning their size in regular fashion and soliciting compliments. I go to the gym and pay attention to balancing my nutrition, am average weight, and she thinks I am extreme fitness-chan. I've seen her respond to any hint that she could benefit from diet or exercise with ' uh curves' level defensiveness and is very mad she can't fit into bodyline 4L.
Not touching that. So best I could do was recommend what I did think would look best on her. At that she whines that she meant in lolita styles so I just deferred saying I'm not sure having never had big boobs and being bad with sizing.

Please excuse the self-post and the awkward angle, but I think old fit & flare/a-line dresses are really flattering on girls, like me, who are wide at the hips and small in the bust. The dotted ones are ones I want to sell or trade, I don't look nice in brown and the tunic shows my butt.

For sure! The reform and artistic dress movement was a godsend. So many interesting garments and a lot of beautiful couture came about at the time. Tbh I like a lot of early 1900's stuff up to about the 50's, then it gets a bit cheesy for me.

Please, please, PLEASE people! The word "vintage" is a noun, not an adjective. You cannot describe something as BEING "vintage" - at least not correctly. You can say something is "1940's vintage" or "Victorian vintage" (a bit redundant, but still correct) etc. But when you describe something as BEING "vintage" you sound ignorant - and for good reason.

The petticoats are lighter, and so are the dresses in general. Also, pin-up clothes actually usually come in smaller sizes than lolita clothes do, which means they fit me better! It's not necessarily about how big/fat you are, though. Their customized option can be used if you have super broad shoulders (something I'd do if I ever got a custom dress, although I wouldn't get one from them due to the reviews) or an exceptionally large bust, etc etc.

I was also a little "meh" after seeing a review here the "customized" neckline from a deep v to a regular v was just them adding a poorly sewn snap to the neckline.
