Most of the Homestuck props are not that hard if you put actual planning into making them. Ahab's crosshairs for example is not as complicated as people make it out to be. People need to a) stop using shit materials like cardboard and foam and start using actual materials like wood, mdf, and plastic and maybe for shits and giggles we can trying sanding your product smooth before priming and painting it so it doesn't look like a lumpy abomination like that fucking seahorse one up there b) STOP MAKING THE FUCKING THING THE SIZE OF A GODDAMN 1980s SAM LAUNCHER. It's a rifle for fuck's sake, not a bazooka. Scale that shit.

Make sure your horns stand up straight! It's a pet peeve of mine to see Peixes horns drooping sadly. I think the general consensus is that the braids should touch the ground but drapery cords are a big no no. Make sure your hair is short and choppy and appropriately spiky. And my personal preference is sticking as close to canon as possible and staying away from "headcanon" additions (like the crop top, the excessive jewelry, etc). I don't know why everyone always makes their fins - I like the sea nymph fins on GypsyTreasure just fine.

The thing about the blues is that I've seen people do two different things: One is to have the pants and hood be a royal/deep blue of sorts, while the shirt is light blue, and another is to have the whole outfit be royal blue. Don't use any panel image of John's god tier to reference your colors. Pull them directly from his sprite. The colors change wildly across panels, for other characters' god tiers as well, but the stylized sprites are always the same with their color scheme.

And from what it looks like, only the hood should be a royal blue, then the next darkest blue would be the pants, with the lightest blue being the shirt and symbol. I've got this all wrong... I just bought a royal blue shirt, I've got some sort of royal blue pants, and my hood is light blue. Argh.

I just think finding the shirt is what's bugging me because I've been so pent up on finding the EXACT shade that could work, and I've seen some people laud some good cosplayers whose outfits are all royal blue.

CBC are adorable to talk to. They kind of come in a pair though. Yaexrae is really unexpectedly funny! I dunno, I thought she was really elegant, I didn't expect funny. saccharineSylph is sweet but sort of a space cadet? Cifera is sassy, but super helpful and passionate about her work. I've watched her stand there and tell a beginner how to make everything. (Yaexrae does the same thing. I'm kind of in awe of her patience.) Cancerously is nice, but in groups she can get really shouty and frazzled which is understandable. Ceriene and crew are cute and funny, though I notice they tend to stick with their own.

All in all I find the HS BNFs are pretty cute?

A lot of kids see running events as a way to get instant tumblr-famous, so they all rush against each other to be first to "claim" an event. One local con had been over for a week before some highschool kid posted to the comm declaring that she was running next year's photoshoot. I'm actually in the same Homestuck comm as whoever posted the pic of that Equius, and our community is a mix of 12 to 30 year olds, to be honest. The teens all bitch at each other, but anyone above 21 is pretty mature and friendly. It's funny watching the teen drama, we all get good laughs out of it, and as the adults admin the group, nothing gets out of hand.

Finding a good cosplay community is all about finding all the ones in your area, then finding the decent people. They'll either invite you to a smaller group, or you'll make one, and then you'll have some sane cosplayers.

Well, er, mostly sane. Equius-type people excluded. Forcing your brats to watch hamsteak videos isn't the definition of sane.

Personally, I don't mind highschoolers, hell, I think middleschoolers are sweet. It's fun to watch them play and get excited, and some of the seniors have pretty good heads on their shoulders.

Barstuck is consistently always my favorite event. Everyone can RELAX, and not worry about 'oh god, minors' or 'oh god, don't break anything.' Terrifying shit to me is, if I'm hosting a meetup and one of my homestuck kids runs off and breaks something, I'm probably held responsible as the 'adult party.' Or, if something happens like, IDK, drunkroxy, it could get into severe legal shit.

So yeah, I've met some super immature 21+s, but at least that takes the nervousness out of the equation.

I'm on the older end of my local crew, and many of our younger kids are not bad to be around at all. The issue isn't being around 18 year olds, it's that some of us have jobs or are looking to get jobs that underaged drinking could damage. And the wording of these event rules is really important, because they always get pushed, By listing in the text of the event that 18 year olds are allowed in a place where drinking is happening, you're already crossing a legal line. And you're also making the stretch space that inevitably happens at events like this apply to under 18s, since as an anon already mentioned "Oh, I'm not far from the cut off!" Drunk under 18 year olds spells even more trouble that 18-21 for adults in jobs where that kind of shit matters.

it's not going to stop me from attending, but I plan to stick to my own, where as last year I felt more comfortable branching out. I don't want to get involved with kids who might have to be carried out on a stretcher ala drunkroxy at Otakon, and run the risk of having my face and/or name connected to it.

I actually prefer EpicCosplay before I buy Arda. My EC wigs look and feel more realistic (as realistic as a pale pink wig can look), and if I buy them at a con, they cost about the same. I guess Arda has a nice selection, but, yeah, I never really got why people jump to recommend them.

i've never worn one, but arda looks okay. usually. i've seen some odd colors come from arda. i'm considering going to them for a few wigs that will for sure need additional wefts just because they sell decent sized wefts and i can be sure the colors match. other than that i use ebay or taobao because they're cheaper and i don't have any cosplays that need really thick wigs or very specific odd colors.

however if you have trouble fitting asian wigs arda is excellent, apparently. and i've heard arda is good for short wigs but epic cosplay is better for long as theirs tangle less.

I have a big head by wig standards (eg, "one size fits all" hats usually pop right off), but Arda's wigs consistently fit my gargantuan noggin and are lusciously thick.

I've bought two long wigs from the same seller on eBay before (zhoujuntao, though they may have changed their tag). While the wigs fulfilled their purpose, the wig nets rode up in the back of my head with only the length of the wig to cover my exposed hair.

Hey HSG. I'm painting my first pair of horns. They've been sanded smooth and covered in layers of Mod Podge, but the paint is just not sticking. When I apply it, it loses all its colour saturation and washes out to an ugly pastel hue, and the paint refuses to blend into a gradient until the brush has wiped nearly all of it off (leaving behind a residual gradient but not a true one). What am I doing wrong? I'm following Yaexrae's tutorial for painting, but I've fucked up somewhere and can't figure out how to fix it.

do a base coat of white, like a nice thick titanium white that's super opaque first. that should help. let it dry completely. it also helps if you let the yellow/orange/red areas dry more and then go back to blend along the edges.

if the paint's still thinning out, you might be using cheap paint. I use liquitex acrylic for my horns and it works great.

Pinning wigs in place with several hair pins (not bobby pins) can help fix this. Most wig caps are made to stretch a good amount, so if you stretch them and then pin them, they'll stay. You should be doing this with heavy wigs anyway so they won't ride up.

Folk art is pretty cheap, so yeah, getting nicer paint might help. Get something quality for the white, at least. I use a paintbrush for horns but I don't see why sponge wouldn't work.

For gradients, personally, I drybrush with very little paint so that theres more variation and it looks a little more organic. If you want a smoother, more even gradient, I'm not sure.

Idk man, Folk art has always been very opaque and good to me. But then again, I DO NOT prime with mod podge first. I only use mod podge as a top coat. Mod podge is essentially a glue, so getting it wet with paint probably isn't doing you any favors. I say try it with the white paint base with Folk Art and see what difference that makes.

Paint anon here. Coated the horns in two thin layers of gesso and let them dry for a couple hours. During painting they too peeled and slid right off the Mod Podge. I've never had to let gesso cure for 24 hours, but I guess I'm gonna have to try that. Nothing is sticking to these goddamn horns. They aren't even staining.
