I've made a few things successfully, but it's always been when I've just looked at a piece of clothing and then sort of... winged it.

I don't have a dress that looks like the one I want to make at all, so I can't do that this time. i think when I get a pattern I overthink things too much.

It'll also be my first time sewing a zipper into anything, so I'm a little nervous about that.

You'll definitely need to do it more than once your first time. I'd find a cheap zipper an some scraps and practice a few times. I've literally ruined skirts by re-doing the zippers to many times. It's not easy, but it takes practice. OH and invest in a metal zipper foot.
