and you do all your mecha with cardboard coated in resin right? I'm thinking of doing a pyramid head that way, but at the same time I need to be able to add a 'cracked' texture to the surface, would your technique work for that or should I look at something else? this is the texture I'm going for, cracked and flaking, picture is my reference since I am only considering the original SH2 game design

My stuff is made from 90% sintra and about 10% foamcore board.

Id recomend you use foamcore board for your helmet since its light and super easy to work with, just make sure you use a nice sharp new blade when you cut it for clean edges.

As for the paint look at home depot for Rustoelum spray paint with a hammered finish like this http://www.rustoleum.com/en/product-catalog/industrial-brands/high-performance/spray-paint/v2100-system-hammered-finish-spray-paint

That should give you the effect you want :)

yeah it's not just a texture that a paint can give, it has deep cracks and metal flaking up, thanks so much I'm sure the paint will help too. sage for not talking about mechs
