It's not a fetish for everyone who does it. It's impressive to pull off an entire costume and look good with the mask as well and some people just don't have the courage to show their actual faces, so this is how they prefer to cosplay.
It requires a lot of effort to do it well, so it's respectable.

Then there's official kigurumi for promotional events which is a little different, but still neat when it's well-made.

moving mouths not being a thing and the majority of hobbyists being male and such

I have 2 issues with it.

1- usually the color of the mask doesn't match the color of the suit. (>>7308482)

2- The masks are often too big for the body, and are then disproportionate. In anime that's fine, but when you put it on a body with normal human proportions, it's really offputting.

I don't understand the use of bodysuits. I can understand when it's a hairy guy, but what about the girls who wear them or the guys who have little hair or shave anyway? The suit often doesn't match the face in color so doing so for matching skin tones doesn't make much sense. And the suit is always a thick fabric the wrinkles easy. If you are compelled to wear a suit then why not use something tighter like, skin colored tights? There is so much potential for this thing looking really good, but in the vast majority of cases they look horrible.

Yes you can see through holes on them. They are usually hidden, and the visibility is, therefore, limited.

They are very expensive. Please, if you are aiming for quality, make your own, or be prepared to pay a lot. You can find cheaply made ones, which look bad, for around $800.

If you want to get good ones tho, they'd be around $1,2k up to $3k

The suit often matches the mask much better than skin would. It's just hard to get perfect because it can look different in different lighting. And by seeing the details of the person's skin it can break the illusion and end up looking like a person with a giant thing on their head. Also 90% of them are men, they need it to hide some manly feature or fake breasts or whatever. Just think of it as crossplay for non-passable guys.

They basically are skin colored tights. If you mean something more transparent, it would still wrinkle unnaturally at the elbows and also probably have much more noticeable seams.

Basically you need to make a clay sculpt, then make a silicone jacket (or anything else to create a negative out of the clay), then finally FRP/urethane/etc...

Then, it's paint and wigs. There's not really a good tutorial.

Kig people from /jp/ typically don't like that site and don't recommend it, but there is a lot of useful information and pictures so you can at least get a sense of what the process is.

Meh, there ain't a good tutorial there, not even pics. Try reading it and you'll see what I mean. It's better trying to learn sculpting techniques, casting and such for general purposes then applying to kig. Cosplayers also use those techniques to make props.

The purpose is to look exactly like an anime/manga/vydia char in the real world, not a human representation of an anime/manga/vydia char, like cosplay usually is, so I don't think it really defeats the purpose.

I really want to make one myself. What are the Japanese suiters doing different from western suiters? I've never made one of these before and I don't want to spend all the work and money to be part of the uncanny valley that is western fursuiters.

They're a lot shapelier, for the most part. A lot of western fursuits sag a bit on the body and look like someone wearing a big sack covered in fur. Japanese ones look more like... sculptures, I guess?

Also, curves. The more intentional curves a caricature/whatever has, the better it looks. Living things don't tend to have many straight lines.
