Hey /cgl/.

I tried making a pair of earrings out of Sculpey, but when they came out of the oven they turned out all gross and splotchy.

Can anyone tell me what I might've done wrong? I feel like I followed the directions correctly, but this is my first time baking clay.

I do plan on remaking them, since I now see that the shape looks like shit too. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Air bubbles.

I don't think Sculpey is the best thing to make earrings out of, especially if they're particularly small

They're actually rather large, about an inch and a half tall. Do you know of anything else I could make them out of?

Do you have a reference picture

For earrings, you're probably better off making them out of paperclay or some other light air dry clay.

Yes I do. It's Betty Deville from Rugrats.

Okay, I'll look into it. Thanks.

If the earrings are flat on one side, I would sculpt one from Sculpey (color doesn't matter) and sand it to get rid of lumps and unevenness. Then, I would use it to make molds for resin. With resin, they would be lightweight and you can choose to make them opaque or transparent. They tend to look a lot more finished that way than any sculpted earring. Resin casting is a lot easier than it sounds, too.

Paint them, splotchiness gone.

Also next time you sculpt dip a finger in some water to smooth everything out before you bake

Making them out of resin is a nice idea but really overkill for this project.

>Paint them
Oh my god, why didn't I think of that? I feel dumb now.

I never thought about sanding them, it sounds like a good idea. I like the resin suggestion too, but I'm really tight on money at the moment. Next time though!

I second painting them. You can also add a coat of gloss or satin finish they sell for polymer clay. I've also heard that floor spray varnish works too.

I love you.
