The term you're like for is gijinka. Generally when it comes to making a gijinka design. You want to keep some things in mind. 1. Colors. You generally want to stick to the colors of the creature without to many odd colors. Otherwise it'll make them harder to recognize. 2. Your theme(are you doing a fancy version, punk, armor, etc....), details. 3. What does the creature have that help make it recognizable? Their ear shapes, certain patterns on their coat, odd tails, etc... 4. Also does the creature have a certain quirk or habits? Like a lot of Kyubey cosplayers like to have clipboards with contracts on them.

Not gonna work, never used worbla but gluing anything already painted you'll just be gluing the two paint surfaces together. They'll end up peeling and cracking off, exposing the material underneath. You need to sand lightly the specific area you want to glue together, until the base material is visible, then probably glue with UHU or some other light solvent based glue (which will melt the paint partially for a more secure bond).

While the best tape is Hollywood Fashion Secrets
>http://amzn.com/B000YOSI6U

I've used both on thigh highs which stuck exactly where I put them throughout lots of activity and then for weird shit like sticking a heavy belt to itself + clothes due to lack of belt loops for four hours.
Removal's also ridiculously easy for both. Just peel at a corner for the tape and apply water to the glue.

I want to cosplay Nonon's Symphony Regalia uniform. What could I use for the wings to make them sturdy enough to wear at a con without them breaking, while keeping them lightweight?

>> No.7284615

PVC pipe for the main structure and air dry clay/ papermache to build up the bone shapes, and foam shaped into a cone with a longish wood dowel to stabilize it for the spikey bits. Also be sure to cover the foam similarly to however you cover the rest of it.
There will be weight. Not unbearable do to mostly lightweight and hollow materials, but clay and papermache will weigh it down considerable. There is no way around that, but if you have a proper harness built for it, you won't notice it much at all.

just get a metallic spray paint in whatever color you need and paint your foam. Once its dried, wet sand it til youve knocked most of the shine off of it. rinse and repeat until the foam has soaked up enough of the paint that it seems to have an almost plastic-y appearance and feel. then do a last coat of the metallic paint, clearcoat it, and you should be good.

I have a few things I need help with /cgl/. I am fairly new to cosplay and my project at the moment is Takagi from BAKUMAN

Firstly, he wears glasses. I don't need them in real life, but what do you suggest for cosplaying? Will real ones hurt my eyes? Should I get fakes that are lensless or ones with fake lenses? If so, where is a good source?

Secondly, I have hair about 3/4 of the way down my neck. If I wore a wig would this be irritating? I don't really fancy getting it cut but I would much prefer a wig to just my normal hair so it doesn't look shitty.

I've styled an afro wig before and believe it or not, they are very easy to style. It's kind of like sculpting; you use larger tools to hack off the excess portions, then smaller tools to even it up and make it look nice. The best thing about afro wigs is that if you slip up, you can just gently pull on the fibers and it will help fill in gaps. I recommend snipping it to the preferred size around your face and the side of your head, then taking it off and putting it on a wig head to trim the back and neaten it all up.
Oh, and cut down the side of a garbage bag to line whatever surface you're cutting over, because afterwards it will look like there are pubes all over your bathroom if you don't.

I already posted in the wig thread because I can't into wigs, but does /cgl/ have any ideas what to do for the back of this?
Wont let me repost the file, so here's a link.
>>7285731

The character never actually shows her back, and the original art is so stylized that I'm using fanart for a ref.
I know shes based on traditional Huldra, so I'm wondering if I should attempt the bark-back with the branches sticking out, or just the branches since you can't actually see her back. I wanted to use real, dead wood with a clear varnish because dead wood is incredibly light and looks, you know, like wood. Should I include the cow tail, or do you think her rendition is farther from original swedish huldra, and closer to a tree spirit? For the hands/arms I was thinking the homestuck armsleeves thing, with brown tights instead, or a bodysuit, since you never see her legs. And the dress itself I was just going to modify one of those lab-coat patterns to make it much much longer, and sleeveless.

Shes the Huldra from the game "Year Walk" for those who don't recognize her.
Sorry for the tl;dr, I've never made my own cosplay before, and this character seemed like a good place to start.

I'm going to be cosplaying Robin have most of it done- but I finally got stumped on the mask. Already know how to make said mask but I need opinions/suggestions for the eyes?? Not sure which way would be the best in terms of how its going to look.

One option was covering it with really thin white fabric under the mask, while my other option was painting around my eyes/eyelids black, and just wearing white contacts that cover my eye. I'm struggling so hard with the concept design for cosplaying Toothiana from Rise of the Guardians. There's not many Tooth cosplayers out there as it is, and most of them end up looking like chickens, and the rest of them really don't bother to make tutorials or help guides (unless you want to look like a chicken.) I was thinking about purchasing a blue morphsuit as a base, then using a diamond stencil to create the colored gradient all over the suit that would reflect her colors. I'd then take small feathers in the same shades and begin to cover the torso, back, partially the arms, and only about to he knees on the legs, slowly fading them so that they have a natural transition into the previous diamond gradient that I created. This would be to avoid the chicken look. I'd cut the heart shaped hole into the face of the morphsuit, and create the feather headpiece seperately. The wings would more than likely be cellophane and wire. Help, I need ideas.

I don't know how many of you have played Disgaea 4, but I really want to cosplay Fuka (pic related). After looking up other cosplays I was really disappointed at the quality. That being said I've never cosplayed before and I really don't want to disappoint.

First of all, I'm definitely making the hat and sports jacket. I definitely have to buy her bag. My dilemma is the uniform. I was going to buy a white blouse and add the sailor top to it, but my boyfriend claims we should make it all completely from scratch. When it comes to school uniforms that are common do cosplayers usually buy them or make them?

Hi, Fellow Fuka cosplayer! I personally made the uniform, because I wanted to try to make something all on my own, but I do see a lot of people buying uniforms. I have seen a fuka uniform for sale while looking up images so finding the right stripes should be easy. But I'm definitely looking into making it now. Are you making the bag or buying it? Hello! I'm 5'5 and about 153lbs. I've been wanting to get into the Lolita and cosplay scene but I'm working on losing weight at the moment. I've reduced my carb intake and increased my protein intake, am going to the gym every day for half am hour to an hour, etc...
Should I wait until I've lost some weight to go ordering things? I mean, I definitely don't want to have lost a bit of weight by the time they get here resulting in them being big on me.

And I also have another question. How can you cover up scars? I'm interested in cosplaying a character with her thighs visible, but I have a lot of self harm scars on my thighs that nobody knows about, and is prefer to keep it that way.

I'm a little concerned about the colour matching the jacket (since I'm having that commissioned), so I might just leave it to them too. On the other hand, I don't want them to be like "white feathers are good enough" and such. I've no experience with fabric stores so I hope they have the right shade.

I was in a similar position to you last year, anon. At the start, I bought pieces with shirring and corset lacing that would fit me at that particular moment in time, and would still fit when I lost weight. I avoided buying smaller pieces to "aim" for, and only started buying pieces that were more unforgiving (i.e. no stretch/ shirring) once I reached goal weight. You can make your wardrobe flexible, just be really careful and honest when looking at measurements.

Good luck with your weight loss, anon chan. I'm 5'7" and was 10lbs heavier than you when I started, and I've been stable at about 130lbs for a while now. You're gonna look fabulous!

I'm going to try to make a prop from that insulation foam board at Lowe's. I see a lot of cosplayers coat theirs in gesso or epoxy resin. Not sure on epoxy resins because ive never used them, but any polyester resins (fiberglass) will actually melt insulation foam if you dont first coat it in something like gesso or modge podge. Depending on the size of your piece. Id coat it in gesso, then if its large coat it in fiberglass resin, and bondo if its smaller. Bondo will be way easier to sand, but its also way heavier.

I like to sew the basic pieces together with either cotton thread or something close enough to the color I'm going for. Then I dye the fabric and do all the hemming/seams that require topstitching with a thread color that closely/perfectly matches the new fabric color. You could buy thread that you estimate will match, but it's always frustrating when the thread you bought to finish the final product is just a hair too light or a shade off or whatever.

Honestly as much as you may hear horror stories about that kind of thing, it really almost never happens. However id confidently say that if you mad a sword from insulation foam and covered it in a thin layer of bondo (just enough that you can sand it a bit, probably around 2 or 3 mm), it would be more thand sturdy enough, and really not all that heavy at all. Thats your best bet at this point i think.

Depends on what kind of ahoge you have. You can usually just wash it out if it was styled with styling gel. If heat was used, you can only cut it out. If it's just a weft, you can just simply cut it out as well.

Really you can pick. In some early concept art and in the early seasons it's a very dark green. It's gets lighter as the series progress, super Jupiter is generally depicted much brighter.

Groups tend to go for more saturated colours for Inner scouts and leave the darker colours for the Outer scouts as Neptune and Uranus are also quite darkly coloured in their initial appearance.

Basically everything from emerald green to a dark bottle is valid based on personal preference.

If you want a really luxurious option for a microfibre.

Dependant on how you're pleating (or not, some people like the gathered circle look) your skirt really determines the weight you want. Don't use a really light cotton or else the the pleats won't be weight nicely and they'll have a tendancy to crinkle and sit out of shape.

Using fabrics with drape like most economy or acetate satins will give nice flow to the skirt. Not recommending you use satin (though again where magical girls are concerned that's personal choice) but trying to give a frame of reference as trying to describe levels of drape is like trying to articulate a smell.

Look for "foam tennis balls". They'll be lighter and probably easier to string up. If you've ever felt one of those foam stress toys, they're pretty light.

Another option, which is far more complicated, is to remove some of the weight of real tennis balls but cutting them open and sanding the rubber on the inside. This'll give you the realism, but again, it's going to be a lot of tedious work.

well I will just throw wild guesses at you but consider this:
Don't try to make your cloths too shiny. Most of the time people try to use artifical stuff for their cloths which are too shiny, plus they make them too clean and perfect. Try to use wool or linen, although I realize that could be expensive but cheating as always allowed so you don't need to use 100% ones.

also as far as I understand the skirt is a must have for anything that tries to be magical girl themed. As I showed on my previous picture there were kind of similar skirts in the late medieval periods / early renaissance. And those were fashionable for men too at the time (although I will assume that you are female for the sake of my sanity)
And don't worry about the skirt thing if it don't go below knee height and you cut it up front and back or the two sides then it's perfectly good for combat there were a lot of cloths like that.

also also, here is a little tutorial on medieval tailoring
http://www.gjar-po.sk/~kassayova9c/the%20medieval%20tailor's%20assistant.pdf
it's very useful and could give you a lot of idea, although keep in mind that documents only shows a very few things from a very wide time interval.

okay, first of all. This is for a larp, right? That means you don't have to be authentic. At all. Of course it greatly depends on the larp in question but most games doesn't require authentic cloths.
So it's only a question of how much authentic YOU want to be. And for example you don't have to be worry about your hair because very few people know (and care) about authentic hair styles. Most people who are very loud about it just pulling stuff out of their ass or repeating something they saw in a movie.

ruffles are okay, actually there are a lot of stuff that have similar things, bows are... well no sane person would care about that either.

Bike shorts now that could be out of place. although I can think of a workaround of it but first a question: what kind of larp is this? because if this is the kind of larp when you go out camping for three days then you REALLY don't want to left your legs bare otherwise running up and down in the nature won't be too much fun. If it indoors only then it's okay.

about the motifs, it would be the best to be slashed/sliced/whatever is the english term for it into the cloth (which also means more than one layer of cloths or one cloth made out more than one layer)

This subject has been bothering me for a while now and I didn't really know where to turn, so here I am.

I have been wanting to do a taobao order for 2+ years now. I FINALLY got financially stable enough to order.

Now, I know when people first recommend taobao they say to order with a friend to save on shipping. So because of this I've promised a handful of my friends that they can order with me once I finally decide to order from taobao. But since I've had such a long time to explore the website, my wishlist is now ginormous. So I feel like if I were to include my friends in my order shipping would be suuuper expensive.

So my dilemma lies here:
1. Should I make a smaller taobao order to start off with anyway? I mean this is gonna be my first order yet I'm planning on buying 15+ things (a few wigs and then everything else is pretty small. Hair accessories, false lashes and maybe a purse or two)
2. If I were to go with the 15+ things I want to order, should I make the effort to involve my friends?
3. Is there any way for this order to be cost efficient if I were to include them? I do see taobao group orders happen a lot, so I'm wondering if it's possible.
4. Maybe I could just break up my order into two transactions. One including the heavier items I want (wigs and purse) and the other the lighter items (hair accessories and false lashes) and then have the lighter order be the one I join with my friends.

There are benefits to making group orders worth it.

Shipping starts with a baseline when you first order. I don't know from the top of my head but I'm sure the tb thread has some info somewhere there. Since the initial 500 g or 1 kg is a lot more than the additional 500g/1kg, having more weight saves money. However, weight is rounded up rather than to the nearest 500 g or 1 kg.

A bigger order will be more favorable, generally, compared to a smaller one.

The shipping depending on 500g versus 1 kg depends on what shipping method. I don't know which off the top of my head.

And would you advise in splitting the shipping evenly? Cause that's another thing I'm sort of struggling with, I'd feel bad if I were to buy a ton of things and then a person bought just two or three items but still had to pay $30 for the shipping

If I were a participant in a group order, I would never want it that way. I would want to split it by weight and weigh every single item out to make it fair for everyone because of the situation you just said.

That's how I usually do group orders.

First up, I recommend getting a wig despite the already apparent matching hair color. Wigs will style and maintain their look better throughout the day.
Secondly, the biggest problem people generally have with superhero costumes, is doing applique on stretch fabrics. For that, I recommend this http://crashcult.blogspot.ca/2011/01/costuming-stretch-applique-tutorial.html

>>7299028
Go very tight on your seam allowances and use a zig-zag stitch to ensure it holds and can still stretch and move as much as is required.
As for the bow, there are so many types of bows, it's hard to say what would be best for your cosplay without knowing who it is you are cosplaying as.

>>7299078
Have you checked goodwill, thrift stores and consignment shops?

>>7299160
What exactly is the tail you are going for? Is it a raichu tail? If so, it is hard to get proper stability from something that long and thin while still having it flexible enough that you can sit down. It is kind of a cheat. but it may be best to go with a less stiff tail, like a rubber hose or tube attached to a belt, and then, at the bolt on the end, run a tight length of fishing line back to the belt. The result will look like your tail is swooping upward and will bob and weave like an actual tail might as you move. As an added bonus, it will be easy to grab and move your tail when you want to sit.

>>7300133
Best and cheapest way would be to use foam and then cover it with either fiberglass or bondo. It will be lightweight and pretty sturdy, though you wouldn't want to larp with them.

Find a wood shop and some basic tools then. Or get a friend who knows how.

Crossbows are relatively simple to make. The easiest way is to make the stock from wood, the crossbar from foam and plastic, etc etc. The sword, just use sintra. Easy shit.

Not a big fan of pink foam. The texture's bad and it's good for large projects, bad for detail work and if you need to make symmetrical objects.

I'm hoping to go to AB this year as Juniper Woods but I seriously have no clue how to do her hair and I have zero experience cutting or messing with wigs. Would you say her hair is just a light brown? And is there a way of braiding a wig so that I don't damage the wig and I don't make the wig cap visible underneath, especially in the back? Also, since her hair sticks out to the sides I was thinking of using metal wires in the braid to keep them sticking out. If that's a bad idea or if you have a better one please let me know. And finally, how do I get her hair into the spherical shape at the bottom? I seriously can't come up with anything for that. Thanks in advance!

I might recommend Arda's Leia wig for Juniper. The wig is pre-braided and about the right thickness, and has some unbraided fibers at the bottom you could use to make the balls at the end of her hair.

Of course you need to finish it. That's a given, but not what I'm talking about. I mean the texture's not that great for carving flat shapes or symmetrical shapes. It's too easily dented, and not as easy to work with for beveled edges.

As I see it, Insulation foam is good for two things. Large objects and irregular or rounded 3D shapes. Blades, platemail, anything with a "hard" edge or a part you need to keep straight, there's always a better alternative.

>> No.7301677

I'm doing craft foam covered in gold vinyl, but I like the idea of them as 3D because I see them as armor. You could appliqué on the vinyl if you wanted it more 2D, I think. As for the boot covers, I'm using spandex, but matte 4 way stretch vinyl could also work.

Since the parts I need are relatively thin, would using foamboard as a base and slapping bondo on top to thicken and stiffen it work? I'll probably just use worbla for the "metal" parts on the crossbar.

I've seen tutorials using nerf swords and bondo, so I'll probably do that for the sword.

>>7301419
I seriously don't have access to a wood shop, trust me, I've looked. :/

Well, sucks then. You don't even need anything that complex, either. Metal shop, maybe they'll let you use a saw. I know from experience that usually those tools can be used for either. Ask around first, all you really need is the stock.

Crossbar, use some pink foam, reinforced with styrene or sintra, and the bits near the center you can just make from bent styrene or something.

Blade I'd say make out of sintra or PVC foam. Not hard to get, cheap, best material for swords. Everything else should be easy enough.
