I would NEVER venture to tell someone because of their looks that they shouldn't cosplay something.

I prefer people make their cosplay and I like them to put in effort and all. But looks are something you have little conrtol over (aside from weight) and it is the height of bitch to demand someone's genetics match a made up character.

I have pictures saved on my laptop. She went from buying everything online to making fully lined costumes with somewhat advanced techniques in a matter of months.
She's said both her parents are artists and her mom and grandma sew, but she's ~entirely self taught~. Her parents also buy her everything she needs for all of her costumes

these are the same parents that let her walk around otakon in downtown murdermore in 5" heels with her ass out of her cosplay from some hentai game at like 14 years old

I think her parents are a little overprotective (they do accompany her to cons and homeschool her??? idk I may have made that up), but they're supportive and have the means to fund her hobby. Doubt she told them that character was from a hentai game though...

I have a big nose, so it looks like I'll be ruining whichever Frozen costume I decide to do. Put aside the fact that I'll very carefully choose my fabrics, spend hours getting the wig just right, and will applique or embroider all of the designs. It will be RUINED because my NOSE is BIG OMG.
Seems like there's a disproportionate amount of Frozen elitism compared to Brave and Tangled. Yeah, some people got nitpicky about the wigs for those, but I feel like there's more vendetta posts for Frozen. Is that just me seeing that? At least they get deleted quickly.

Can we have a "how to do ___ right" thread? So instead of people bitching about things being done the wrong way, we discuss which materials and methods are best for the costumes?
Personally, I'd like to see ice dress Elsas using lacefront wigs. Even Arda has decent lacefront wigs and sells matching wefts, so it's not too hard to achieve a more natural-appearing hairline.

>> No.7267247

>>7267243
Have all the lace fronts I've seen been done wrong or do they just not do what they say on the tin in real life? The net is visible even with make up. Or is it just a photoshop aid in the long run?

>> No.7267264

>>7267247
A lot of people don't wear lacefronts properly. You have to trim the lace very carefully along the hairline. Most people just hack it down to half an inch and call it a day. I've seen some immensely convincing lacefronts, just takes more work than some people like. But if you're making an ice dress, might as well go the extra mile.

Can I get some feedback on my Elsa wig?

It's slipping off the wig head in the middle picture and I haven't quite worked out how to style all the wisps into submission yet.

It's also been handled a fair bit so it need's re-braiding to catch the stray hairs.

>> No.7267276

>>7267271
I like what you did with the braid, especially using hair to cover the band at the end. But I'm confused as to why you have bangs in your wig when Elsa has nearly all of them combed back.
If I may ask, where did you get your wig? If it's heat-resistant, try using a hairdryer along the roots while you pull the wefts back. Some heat should help shape them so that they naturally lie back the way you want them.

>> No.7267279

>>7267276
It's a recycled wig that already had some short bangs. I was going to leave a little bit forward as in several scenes and promo art she has a stray wisp and either style the rest back or trim it down so it didn't matter.

>>7267271
Color looks way too yellow, but there's nothing you can do about that at this point. Braid looks ok. Can't really give you any feedback on the front since the way you've got it on the head right now makes it look wonky.

>> No.7267282

>>7267271
It might be better for us to see it on your head, just so we can take into consideration your face shape.

I think your braid starts too high up, however. Additionally, I noticed during the movie that her swooped back bangs have a distinct point to the end. There were around six or seven bangs.

Everyone seems to be really elitist about Frozen. Disney fans complain it's 'not good enough', cosplayers are getting really nitpicky about everything...
Not sure if I just have my rose-tinted glasses on but I really enjoyed the film and am interested in everyone's attempts at the costumes.

For my own Elsa cosplay, I'm probably going to sew two wigs together. I've hunted for a lace-front but I can't find one that would be cheaper than just buying and editing two wigs. Not sure on fabrics yet but I'm thinking of using chiffon for the undershirt (obvious choice) and duchess satin for the base corset with possibly sequin detail. The cape is bothering me though as the designs are so block-y at the top, most methods will heavily affect the drape and flow.
Currently thinking of embroidery embellished with rhinestones/crystal beads (I can't spell it)?

Either tomorrow or Tuesday, I'll scan my art-book if people want? I'd do it tonight but it's nearly 2am, I'm tired and rambly, and the scanner makes a noise like a lawnmower eating a tin.

I'm glad I'm not alone on this one. I adored the movie and I'm really looking forward to seeing some Kristoffs and winter Annas.
If I were to make Elsa's armpit cape, I would start with the designs drawn out on paper underneath the cape itself the way Angela did. However, I'd rather use sparkly/metallic So Soft fabric paint. It's washable, iron-able (not that you'd be ironing the cape) and goes on pretty evenly. Rhinestones will prevent it from flowing, and most fabric or acrylic paints leave sheer fabric with a crispy texture.
I would adore you for doing that artbook scan. The designs on some parts of the costumes are hard to see in the movie.

not having the same features a character has is not auto shit.

Who lead you to believe that?

There are things you can do to help pull off a good costume even if you have bigger cheeks, different hairline, big nose, closer set eyes, different color skin, are taller, or bustier.

I'm certainly taller and probably a great deal fatter than characters I do. My first line of attack is a flawless costume. I fit things properly, use good fabric, line it, snip those threads, and iron everything. Proper shoes and good props if I need to make some.

Proper make up is next. You can correct a lot with that.

No shit wigs. None. If a good wig can't be had then what is the point of all the rest I just did?

Not being a lard ass. I said I am fatter but there is no excuse for me to be obese. I eat what I should eat and turn down the cake because I would like the costumes I worked hard on last year to still fit.

Agreeing on all these points: Good materials to start with, tailoring well, doing your makeup well, and finishing things with well-styled wigs and all the other accoutrements is what makes a cosplay a win.

I think even the Russian Barbie would be hard pressed to look exactly like a Disney/Pixar girl.

I would agree with OP's statement that the costumes require a lot of skill and are deceptively difficult. But that's no reason someone who isn't top-notch cannot work slowly and learn how to make the costume well if they have the time and patience.

I would also agree that Elsa's hair is platinum blonde, not white/silver/nor Rapunzel/Aurora/Cinderella shades of blonde. I know it can be hard to nail down exact colors from movie stills because of all the environmental lighting etc. but all the if someone doesn't believe, there are all the books, art, CG promo stills, and dolls that also have platinum blonde hair.

>>7267524

Then again, I'm seeing a lot of people making their bodice and skirts as separates and they have the gap between the bodice and skirt which looks kind of awkward and adds bulk, especially when Elsa's skirt is more like an A-line and doesn't have a full "Disney Princess" type skirt that would conceal this.

The patterns on the sleeve and cape are very inaccurate, her bodice looks nice but doesn't have the sequin and rhinestone detailing it does in the movie, and the dress isn't ombre. With a movie like this where they spent so much time animating each stitch of embroidery, accuracy is really fucking important with almost no creative leeway like in anime.

If you set them properly the first time, they stay until you repeat using ungodly high temps that set them in the first place. The adhesive is much stronger than something like hot glue.

That said, if you do any washing of the garment, handwash it, air dry it. Gently steam it to get the fabric smooth again. You can iron over it with a presser cloth, but just be sure not to touch your design again until everything is completely cooled.

To "sewing" everything in a matter of months.
Months.
You tell me her level of "expertise" isn't fish as shit, especially when she's admitted her mother is a seamstress.
While she might be sewing her stuff now, there's no way she reached that level so quickly just with self-teaching from youtube videos and absolutely no help from her parents (her original story, although I guess she's admitted to "taking classes" now?)

Sage for this not being an angela thread.

>> No.7269891

To be honest, I could believe she's embellishing what she's doing and what her mother and grandmother are doing. At the same time, since her mother and grandmother are both seamstresses, I can imagine Angela was learning to sew and such from a young age from them, on top of classes? I don't know why she would have chosen to buy sub-par Chinese cosplays for so long though.

>> No.7269894

>>7269879
Oh come now its not that hard to believe that she's been learning to sew her own stuff. Sure she might be getting some instruction but shes attempting to build a portfolio for design school. Shes going to half to know how to do shit if shes applying for schools. She's also home schooled so I could see her parents maybe allowing her more time on learning to sew and taking lessons than her other studies especially if this is the career shes chosen. So her improving fast isnt really that much of a shock if shes putting that much effort into it. And considering how fast shes turning out costumes it doesnt surprise me that shes picking it up faster then some other herp derp 16 yr old cosplayer who is doing this as a hobby.

>> No.7269910

>>7269888
I follow her blog and it's pretty obvious she makes everything because the process is so clear, and if she didn't it would be a fucking ridiculous effort to fake it all for internet approval. Her costumes aren't that difficult to make, but she does common sense things like alter patterns and make mock-ups as well as put effort into proper finishing which makes it look amazingly polished. Also if she's taking classes and her mother is a seamstress it wouldn't surprise me if she improved so quickly. I'm self-taught and never took classes but you'd be amazed at the amount of information on the internet, as well as what you pick up from cgl.

most of those outfits are pretty simple of you break the down the outfits they would be what I consider "beginner." (Pleated skirts, princess seams, gathered circle skirts.) Also her Royal Tea whatever costume has elements like the bodice that too me scream someone that is learning because its not that great. All her recent "historical" stuff isnt historical at all. However she clearly does research because she posts pages from books that show how to do different techniques that shes tried out. Sure she might have someone who she can go to if shes stuck or taught her a couple of things but I would say what makes her so successful is the amount of organization, planning and research she puts into her outfits. I wish I was more like that when I was 16 and even now.

I learned to sew in 2 months. Made 4 full outfits in that time, granted I am nowhere near professional level and I make stupid mistakes sometimes but I had judges at a competition at a small con I randomly entered disqualify me for apparently lying about how long I had been sewing. I made a boned corset after a few months, but really technically knowing how to make a corset is different than having it look perfect. I'm proud of it since it was my first outfit but I don't understand how they thought I was lying, if you look at the bottom my bobbin decided to fuck up, my boning channels are uneven and there are so many places where the garment took a toll from me having to rip out seams 10 times in a row.
It's not unheard of but she is probably getting help. Things like making correct fabric choices, knowing to press her seams, correct ways to get the fit perfect are things easily learned, what would really show how new she is is how straight her topstitching is, how many holes there are from seam ripping, and how many puckers there are from odd alterations not fitting quite right.

I enjoyed it a lot more than Merida, which I appreciated for the family values but the directing and pacing was really subpar. Frozen was much better, and I loved the song sequences which really flowed with the story. Only thing I didn't like was fucking Olaf's design, which from the artbook didn't change much at all. His character is very endearing but the art is so fucking ugly, but the trolls are dang cute.

Scrolling through the elsa cosplay tag on tumblr and it's fucking hilarious. I'm getting all sorts of 'dont's' from seeing other people's shit. This one girl spent 30 hours hand beading wonky inaccurate lines on her bodice and another's gluing chunky ass square rhinestones on.

Brave was a much bigger let down than Frozen, but still Frozen, when looking at the art book, had so much potential. The ending was something that a Disney movie needed to do, but it was so horribly rushed and there was too much that wasn't explained.
Not to mention that the reveal with Hans was really unnecessary as it took away from what should have just been focusing on a sister-relationship.
Olaf was a fun character but holy shit his design. nonononono
The costume designs were gorgeous, and I'm probably one of the poor few that prefer's Elsa's coronation outfit over her Ice Queen one.
But if you do a rewatch through, if you weren't a main character it was as if there wasn't any lighting on you. The ballroom scene for instance.
Not to mention how they rendered the ice for Elsa's palace. It looked like cheap plastic. I understand the look they were going for but they really should have added some sort of texture, it would have made that scene simply stunning.
Also Elsa was literally just a plot device. We barely knew nothing about her, since the movie focused on Anna and Kristof. And I actually really enjoyed their character interactions but for a movie that was supposed to be focusing on Anna and Elsa, it just left a lot to be desired.

Sorry I work in animation, so Frozen just irks me. I'm glad people liked it, but I wish more people would acknowledge it's vast amount of short-comings.

They're trying to streamline their look I think. In the end everyone just winds up looking like a Barbie. I don't want to sound like tumblr sjw, but that's bullshit, when in an interview, they claimed how hard it is animating women in 3D, which is why all the girls look so same face.

I didn't get that either. It looks like they probably just recycled the model, which is fine because then it's like turning the model into an actress which I think works, but just say you did that it's obvious. My main problem with it is that they're trying to make them look like their cartoons, which doesn't work with a 3D model, they have to branch out and make it work for them because to me it screams lazy and uncanny valley.

They obviously didn't read the notes on each page - it mentions who each character is.

It's interesting that the Queen (mother) and Elsa are basically recolors. They changed eye shape and "eyeliner" a but still, I'd agree with other Anons saying that the Disney approach to 3D characters loses a lot of individuality, though we all "get" why they are doing 3D.

>> No.7272494

I would never have guessed in a thousand years that the 2D concept art was so charming and pretty, considering how ugly and downsy looking the final characters are. WTF Disney, you cannot into 3D.

I don't suppose anyone has found any screen caps/designs of Anna's ending outfit? The green dirndl-looking one? I really want to make it, but I haven't had any luck sourcing some reference images of it.

Anyone have wig suggestions? I was looking at Arda's new Suzi wig but it's so layered in the back it's going to be a bitch to braid with all the shorter pieces sticking out etc. They're supposed to have the actual Tauriel wig with no layers out in mid February. The other thing with Arda wigs is that they tend to be too big for me, so even though that's a specialty style... I don't know how fit will be.

Is it worth waiting for the Tauriel, given possible size issues, or should I find something else? Suggestions on what else will work?
I wish I could try it on to decide.

>> No.7274368

>>7274325
I can't advise on whether to choose the Suzi or Tauriel, but I will state that a lacefront is the only option that'll give you Elsa's hairline without looking cheap.

The sizing issue shouldn't be an issue? Just adjust the hooks to fit snugly, and if the hairline's too wide, just take time to fill it in before cutting the lace back. Or if you want it to fit your head exactly, there are a couple tutorials in Arda's list on how to resize wigs
>http://arda-wigs.com/blogs/tutorials/7958661-re-sizing-a-jeannie-malinda-or-jasmine-smaller

>>7274368
Hm, thanks for the ideas. I guess I can try and be brave and use the resizing tutorials, I just would hate to buy the lace front wigs and fuck it up because they're pricey.

I know I'd have to hand ventilate the slight widows peak if I got a different brand which isn't hard, just time consuming. Hm, I'll have to do some more research to see which is the best for me.

New LE dolls! Anna's normal clothes and Elsa's coronation dress.
They're both so pretty, I'd love to see cosplays that incorporate some of the doll's designs!

Me too! I think it's much nicer than having it all one piece

>> No.7276455

I have platinum blonde hair that's quite thick but not really long enough, was thinking of getting extensions or half-wig gyaru-style because I don't want to deal with ventilating. Anyone got reputable online source for getting clip-in extensions? Human hair preferred, but mix is alright too I guess since it's just for cosplay.

>> No.7276503

>>7276455
Why wouldn't you go with a lace-front wig? You can trim the hairline into a slight widows peak if you want too. Plus style once-wear whenever you want. I foresee the styling on the front of her hair deflating throughout the day if you use your real hair.

>> No.7276847

>>7276455
I'm doing this too. Remy human hair is good, but I don't think it's thick enough, you would need 2 packs and that would be quite expensive. You can go to ghetto hair shops and they will sometimes have platinum blonde extensions. I got really lucky and found a pack with a ton of wefts.

>> No.7276852

>>7276847
Also depending on how light your hair is you may have a hard time finding human hair that is light enough, but if you get human hair, you can bleach it further, and tone it. I did that with my Remy extensions. Almost everything I ever find is too dark, no matter what it looks like or how it's described, but I'm about a step above white hair. Also, I think doctoredlocks has some good synthetic hair wefts.

Using a Jareth for Elsa seems wrong, is that why the braid's so thin? The top of the wig looks super static as well, needs some motion.

Disney is sponsoring a sweepstakes vacation to Norway and stated that it was the country that (mostly) inspired Frozen. They visited lots of different countries, but from what I've read, Norway was the main inspiration. I could be wrong, but that's what I remember reading.
