Can we get another Ohayocon thread guys? Finals are over, and it's a little over five weeks away!

...oh god.

So this is going to be my first con, and I'm just going to drive and hang out at it on Saturday. Anyone have an idea of where the best/cheapest/not-sketchiest lot to park my car is at?

Only five weeks away? I'm not sure if I'll get my cosplay done in time from not even starting yet so I might just cave in and buy it from someone. Such shame.

I'm the Homura crossplayer from the other thread, this is just a stretch, but with the popularity revival from the madoka movie, and I know there's another potential Kyouko crossplayer on /cgl/ here... I wonder if a trap Madoka ensemble is even possible... or if a stupid idea.

>> No.7252561

I'm sewing Madoka's magical girl costume. I started it last February and had no idea that rebellion and the ohayocon theme would bring out so many Madoka cosplayers. I entered craftsmanship for the first time and everything but I am very, very worried that I'm just going to be 1 of 8000 madokas and completely unremarkable in every way... when I worked really hard on this.

Yeah i dont know why theres no activity here either. I get that it has its faults and everything, but its still the biggest con in the state, and personally i think its still pretty decent. Sure security is a bitch and its not ran perfectly, but its still a lot of fun. I kind of think that we're all spoiled by how incredible colossalcon is and basically nothing else in this area can come close to matching it, so we get pissed about every little detail that isnt perfect. Whatever the case may be, im still excited for it and i know ill have a great time, just as i have every other year, regardless of how shittily it may be managed. Is Colossal really that great? I mean... I went the year before it moved to Kalahari and it was awful. I paid way too much for a one-day. The staff was rude and I was threatened with ejection for standing on a tape line instead of standing inside it, and I was assaulted by weeaboos and yelled at in the lobby for 'loitering' by sitting in a lobby chair when I was in a crazy cosplay... and then I left my digital camera there and con staff ignored every email/call I sent them.

I swore I'd never go back, and it moved, and now everyone says it's just the best fucking thing ever.

So as not to contribute to the emptiness of the thread, my boyfriend and I have been lurking, we go every year but don't cosplay. The con has gone downhill enough that it's kind of a make-your-own adventure where you can't expect the con to provide all the fun. If you're prepared to bring a friend and make it fun, it can be great. The con itself seems to have been overtaken by really casual highschoolers, so I'm not too surprised /cgl/ is quiet on it right now.

Last year's steampunk theme didn't seem to bring out much more steampunk than there usually is, so I'm interested to see if the magical girl theme will bring out any more madokas/moons than usual.

I've made a mental note to go to Colossalcon next year, though. Even if the con is terrible, there's a zoo and a waterpark. The backup plan is a destination by itself.

Colossalcon is the shit. Love it. I've never been to it before it moved to Kalahari so I can't compare...But it really is a bunch of fun. Just make sure you do stay at the hotel 'cause then the waterpark & stuff are all included. I made the poor decision of staying at a friend's house one year who was nearby and we couldn't do nearly as much since we didn't have access to the waterpark, animals, etc.

Anyway, yeah you really cant get better than colossal in this area. I never went before the move to kalahari, but whatever it was that may have been wrong with it back then has been more than made up for.

>>7267193
You have a very valid point there. If you go to the shittiest con in existance, you can still have a pretty great time if youre in good company. Still, having a good con to begin with definitely helps. I totally believe that if they got rid of the prepetually butthurt security staff and made sure that more of the stuff that should be taken care of before the con is actually taken done correctly (i.e. legitmately planning the schedule and having everything set in stone before hand instead of the "everythings kind of up in the air at the moment" attitude theyve had in previous years), then it could be an amazing experience. I mean look at it, its got a huge attendance, easily one of the best dealers rooms in the region, and its big enough to draw in much bigger names in the industry than it does right now. They need to take advantage of these attributes instead of squandering them. There is so much potential in ohayocon, it really pains me to see just how much theyve ignored it.

Let's talk about how artist alley doesn't sell fanart..

I used to think it was whatever- I didn't buy fanart anyway when it was started. Then I went to Otakon for the first time, and saw stuff I'd actually want in the dealer's room, good art and nice works that weren't just shitty OCs, draw-you-a-chibi or glued-together plush and cat ears, and almost fell to my knees sobbing. What kind of bullshit is it that they decided not to let people sell fanart? I mean, according to Ohayocon staff they've never had a legal problem with fanart and figure that they're so big that they had to 'act preemptively'. Don't most all, much larger, cons allow fanart?

I guess essentially they cut out the karaoke panels to make room for some guest and tried to slip the people some free badges anyway, but the panelist just wanted to run their panel and an explanation why their shit was cut. >> No.7270232

The year before it went to the Kalahari, it was a clusterfuck. Overcrowded, security staff at least was pretty rude. Hotel staff wasn't great either. I've been going to this convention for probably 10 years? Back then it was really just kind of your average joe small local con, and Ohio was overrun by them years back.

It's much better now and the staff is a lot better and better managed/trained, with exception to the random staffer, but the people in charge seem a lot more on the ball. The space is a lot more accommodating to a big crowd (plus the con has grown a lot) and they deal with young kids a lot so the con people aren't a big deal. Basically the location is really fun, a lot of effort was put into making things more enjoyable. Basically, it's not really the same convention anymore, and it's worth going to.

Are you joking? Yeah sure some of the places there are junk, but theres still a subway, and whatever that middle eastern place is thats just clockwise from subway has some awesome breakfast stuff. I dont know about you, but i fucking leap on the opprotunity to have perfectly edible food at a con for decent prices. Not to mention its actually part of the center! Ive been to cons before where the closest food option was literally a dirty ass wendys that was a 30 minute walk from the center, and was in a really shady part of town. Once youve had to eat at a shitty wendys in the cincinnati hood while wearing only the top half of a masterchief cosplay because the legs broke during the walk there, then you start to appreciate having a food court at a con. The fact that i dont have to go out of my way to grab something to eat or drink real quickly is a great benefit to myself and im sure many other con-goers. Cons only happen every few months, you can go out and have a good meal whenever you want. The cheerleading competition is just one of the many times they double-book the convention center with Ohayocon. Last year they had America's Got Talent as well as a homeowner's expo.
A few years ago there was some sort of Christian group that was doing... something? All I remember seeing was these teenagers sitting against the walls of one part of the con center and eating pizza.
The next day at school this girl came up to me and told me how she was there for the Christian group and saw me.

I hate the wristband thing. I spend so much time attempting to hide it when I took photos. It's too tight to roll too far up my arm. And they expect me to wear it all weekend? I showered with it on twice at Magfest and it was not nice feeling.

>> No.7294551

>>7294536
I hate it too. I'm not even sure it will work with the gloves I have and their alternative is putting a wristband on a lanyard and presenting ID every time you go anywhere. I can only imagine the huge lines.

They claim it will 'speed up registration' but I can't even imagine how, since they now have to put the wristband on. It will definitely slow down entrance to events if any significant amount of people use it. And really, the only benefit they have is for staff- even the staff post pretty much admits it. Can you just imagine, really, how disgusting the underside of a homestuck's band is going to be after a whole weekend?

I wont be going to Ohayocon again after this either. This is so short notice and asinine. I'm paying all this money for a "badge", I want an actual badge that I can tuck away and not have to carry an ID for.

It's not a short notice. At least Ohayocon is giving everyone two weeks to plan for the wristbands. It's also not asinine because it will prevent counterfeits and people from using someone else's badge.

If they would come out and say that, I would accept it and I would think many others would. It would still be disliked, but it wouldn't be so much of an issue.

What they did here was say that to create convenience in getting inside panels/the dealers room (which never had issues with quickly admitting people in, but had problems with keeping order), we now have to be inconvenienced at all times this weekend with something attached to us.

>> No.7294693

>>7294671
No, it's not bullshit. Just look at MAGFest for example. Their wristband thing was very successful and there wasn't any complaints from the attendees.

If Cons need to continue to be successful by bringing better guests, events, concerts, etc., Cons need to clamp down on counterfeits and people from using another badge.

For the staff it's to collect more money to line the pockets of CEOs. I can't help but think it's greedy. To me this is just another shortcoming of Ohayocon. It offers me less than the next just-as-big convention but with ten times as many rules and regulations. They're also not allowing nerf guns, cap guns, airsoft guns, etc even if they're proven to be non-firing this year and trying to get rid of all bags in panels, dealers room, and dances. I feel like I'm a criminal being babysat instead of a welcomed attendee and that's just wrong. I don't think I'd go back.

And it is short notice if you've been working on a costume forever. Someone on the FB page was told to insert a zipper into the arm of their zentai to show the wristband easier....

I bet it stems from the huge counterfeit problems they've had in the past. I unknowingly ended up rooming with a guy who sold fake Ohayocon badges for $25. It was an inside job too, he got the badge designs early from staff and made laminated copies. He couldn't replicate the foil stickers though so he told people to sign over them. People were constantly coming to our room to get badges. It was like he was dealing drugs. He had fake staff badges too that were sold at a premium. Someone from Baltimore did the same when Otakon happened every year. He would make all these counterfeit badges for his friends and give them out for free. I don't know if he was ever caught.

I felt that was more along the lines of shoving it down people's throats (especially when most people know about the religion as it is and if they are curious, there are only as many churches as starbucks on every corner). Though the one year I judged there, I had my one-hour break to get food, so I ran to the food court and got surrounded by a bunch of teenagers trying to witness. I probably looked like a good target because I was by myself. I'm like, guys, I know what you're doing. There's no tally card you have to fill up, there's no contest.

But most of the people I encountered were pretty chill and interested, except the mothers that would drag their children away from the "freaky sinners"

I'm assuming that some asshole pulled a fire alarm. Whatever the cause, it was really dumb and I feel bad for the people who weren't dressed for the outdoors, it's absurdly cold.

Honestly, though, I can say this is the best time I've had at a con in a while, the panels I attended were decent (except for the League one, the panelist didn't know his panel was in the program and was like 20 minutes slate, even then it was alright). Plus I had a nice even amount of hanging with friends and roaming alone (which I like to do). Overall decent Friday night.

The only regret I have is forgetting my makeup at home. I felt super bare in my cosplay.

Interesting, all the panelists I know are pissed. Staff was behind by a ton this morning. My friend's panels started almost an hour and a half late.

Went to get in line for Anime Hell- thought it was at 11:00, got in line at 10:15. First ones there! Awesome, because I'm >5' and have a really hard time seeing in panels. Staff told us we had to leave, that we were not allowed to start lining up until 11. I was wrong- panel started at 11:30. I reluctantly left, got a drink at the bar, and came back at 10:50. Line was already wrapping towards the convention center, past the bathrooms, pretty much capped. Even if I had gotten in, I would have never been able to see. I was so pissed.

We also tried to opt my 7-year-old brother out of wristbands because he doesn't deal well with it/easily irritated skin, and staff threw a fit because he didn't have ID to verify that the name he was giving him was really his, etc.... Children badges are free, btw.

I've heard a few stories about Ohayoncons staff getting shitty with people over ridiculous things.
They have a tendency to get really upset if you stand in the stairwell too long and not right against the wall. Every year I've been I've seen staff shouting at people on the staircase, even if it's just a few stragglers.

A friend of mine also once told me she wore a western cartoon outfit to the convention and they denied her admission to a panel over it.

I didn't get to go this year due to money issues. I wish I could have at least got a program guide though.

So does anyone care about this thread?

Personally I thought this year was decent, which is honestly a huge turnaround from what I've experienced in the previous few years. The fad cosplayers were in much smaller number than before (so happy with the vast drop in homestuckers), the staff was much less mad with power, though still a bit irritating and there seemed to be less jackasses among the crowds. Also I figured the staff wouldn't give a single fuck about checking ID if you put your wristband on a lanyard and I was only asked to show it maybe twice.

Could just be me, but I really enjoyed this year over the last one and will go back at least one more time now.

I agree and disagree. Like always Ohayocon just wasn't quite together. Lots of scheduling problems. Registration problems. Being kicked out of Anime Hell.
More than anything I was very uncomfortable by the level of creep Saturday night. After the masquerade I wanted to go back to the room. Between the bar and the escalator were roaming bands of drunk guys. I don't even know if they were there for the con. Some talked about not even buying badges etc. anyway they were just very vulgar, drunk, and invaded my personal space. I went up a floor to avoid them and some guys came out the stairs. A couple came over and circled around me, just staring and drinking. Then they went to leave, one guy said hold on and came back to stare at me some more. It was so fuckig awkward and uncomfortable.

At least the programming was better than usual. Being in the masquerade was kind of awful?

I thought panelist badges were only free if you had three hours of panels, so I applied for three hours of panels but only got one hour accepted. But then apparently they gave me my badge (well, wristband) for free anyways, so hey, good end.

Also, what's the point of switching to badges if they let you put it around a lanyard anyways? I was only asked to show my ID to verify the name on the wristband once, and while I didn't have it on me at the time they just let me in anyways since it was a panelist badge. I don't get it. Not that I'm complaining, certainly.

Only had 2 minor run-ins with con security and luckily nothing came of them, met a ton of amazing people, had an unholy number of hallway shots taken of me, managed to stay in character just about the whole time i was canti, came incredibly close to breaking my finger while raving in said cosplay, swatted imaginary flies with the greatest raoul duke cosplayer in existence, and finished off saturday night by riding the elevators till 5 am with the most kickass dudes ever. Greg's panels were pretty funny. I had to head back home Saturday night for work in the morning so I kind of regret not getting to see his Tumblr panel.

I told this story multiple times over the con, but fuck it- I'm telling it here because I'm still spilling spaghetti over it. If anyone went to the video game philosophy panel you'd remember how friggen crowded it was and that multiple attendees were standing in the back. Being one of those said attendees I was leaning against the wall near the doorway, barely getting a good view. About five minutes into the panel a grill-cosplayer came in wearing an outfit that showed a lot of her better physical features; naturally, many guys also noticed these features. One guy got this huge grin on his face as he admired said person; and, as many of these stories go, he was wearing a fedora.

"Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me," she whispered as she tried to make her way through the crowd to get a better view.

"Heh," fedora chortled loudly as he stepped aside for her, "you can excuse me anytime when you're wearing that." Poor girl croaked out a fake chuckle in response and quickly shuffled to the other side of the room. I only wish he had tipped his hat like a true gentlesir.

So was anybody else at the Dangan Ronpa photoshoot? We were totally asked to move by the League of Legends photoshoot who claimed to have the spot reserved for their photoshoot.

Whilst moving we had somebody check the forum to confirm this, and it turned out that it was a lie. What's up with that? Spontaneous photoshoots can't just kick out people who reserved an area.

Ha, I'm not sure yet. Whatever it is I want the hair to not fall apart when dancing. You are currently saved as "Siggy dan" in mine because I thought it was catchy.

Actually he thought you guys were cool. He just doesn't really know how to connect with anime con people yet because he's more into western stuff, that's all. Also he's really weary of bars because we were so far away from home and he knows I could never pass for drinking age.

But yeah, definitely want to go to the meetup next time! Maybe I'll be more well-versed in anime from the last three years haha

I loved the Boondocks panel despite the dude that got his panties in such a twist they had to kick him out.
.... who was the creepy chick...? The one that jiggled EVERY fucking door and started yelling when she got in?

I also absolutely loved the Yu Yu Hakusho panel with Justin Cook. Love him, oh lord.

>>7330977
I saw you dancing! You were dancing in the circle I was in, and then you stopped suddenly and went off to the side with friends. I was wondering what had happened. Hope your finger's okay!
I wanted your picture but it was never a good time when I found you.

>>7331061
Was it a Celes? Devon and I came to that panel with a Celes part-way in but she moved up front (since she was friends with the guy who ran the panel) and we stayed in the back. Just wondering because on the way home she told us she was having trouble with guys all up on her lady junk

I've never gone there, but I've heard it's better than ohayocon in a few ways.

And then there's Armageddicon, I had no idea there were so many cons in this area

Do not go to Armageddicon (or Anime Punch, whichever you prefer). It's gone so far downhill. I stopped by last year and the new location was so awkwardly partitioned.

>lays her child down on the couch I'm sitting on and proceeds to change it's shitty diaper

I get parents get upset when there changing tables, but goddamn, they could have found a different place than right beside me.

I really liked the Gameboy cosplayer whose outfit was a legit gameboy emulator with buttons on the outfit. That was really cool.

There was also a Ryuk in Snow White, which was great by default.

Also I felt like there really weren't as many magical girl cosplays as I was expecting given the theme. Homura crossplayer here, felt weird because I didn't run into as many madoka cosplayers as I was expecting.
Although I missed the photoshoot so that might've been it.

I'm sorry anon. I was a Madoka looking for a Homura to take some photos with. If I would have seen you, we could have got some.photos together! The photo shoot was like a 3:10 Homu:Mado ratio, to the point where I just wandered out of the shoot because it was just me standing awkwardly to the side. Also fuck those Swagdoka cosplayers. The joke is no longer funny and they were annoying.

Seriously though? I'm mad as hell. I was on the FB group before the con, when the wristbands were announced. I don't like the idea, I opted out of mine, and I was glad they gave us that option. I was calmly and rationally saying why I didn't like them, and answering people who didn't understand the change. Some brony came in yelling "SHUT THE FUcK UP YOU ANNOYING BITCH" directed at me personally, over and over. staff came in and ignored it, responding to others. Even the guy that usually gives warnings about being nice didn't say anything. I blocked her, thinking it was just a troll.

SHE WAS FUCKING STAFF. SHE WAS A STAFFER. SHE IS STILL HARASSING PEOPLE ON THE FB GROUP POST-CON.

>> No.7332145

The thing is, it's way easier to see a 3" x 2" graphic square than a little blue wrist band, so how is that more convenient for staff anyways?

I'm not who you were replying to, but I though wristbands were dumb anyways. Half the time I went to panels or the game rooms nobody even really checked. Also I'm kinda jelly at my friends who kept theirs on their lanyards. When I picked mine up, the guy put it around my wrist without mentioning there was an alternative.

The Ohayocon Game Show.

The Randy Newman category slayed me. I think it's my favorite panel I've attended in all time. Runner ups would be the Jojo's panel on Saturday, the Myth of Fanservice, and the League of Legends panel that got horribly out of hand due to the panelist showing up like 30 minutes late.

The Ghost in the Shell panel was one of the best panels I've ever been to, because there was legitimate debate going on about the themes the franchise presents, and everyone that spoke besides one particular guy brought interesting points to the table.

I wish the Boogiepop panel received the same treatment which it easily could have with a better planned presentation and a different timeslot.

Does anyone know if the noitaminA panel was cancelled or was it just moved?

The guy at the Boondocks panel was trying to give his two cents when it made a turn for the racist... in a room that was like 90% black (or at the very least mixed) people. People were shaking their heads like "no man, no... stop while you can... don't do this" but he just couldn't take a hint. Eventually he said something about black people destroying themselves and the already-irritated crazy chick (who jiggled every door several times when they were locked to get in and came in almost crying and yelling) yelled "THATS FUCKING RACIST."
A few questions later the same chick talked about reclamation of slurs and he imitated her from across the room in a high pitched voice "dats wascist~" and then he was asked to leave. He got mad, said something like "But I'm on your guys' side!" He was resisting leaving and saying inflammatory things until everyone in the room was telling him to leave.

He left in a flurry of fuck you's and that was the end of it.

And to think I probably could've made it a 4:10 Homu:Mado ratio... It doesn't like like it was all that good, though. That ratio sounds about right though, I think I saw two or three Madokas on Friday but I was one of maybe two Homuras on Friday.

>>7332298
I missed several as well for the same reason. There really were too many people; the Whose Line Is It panel was run by a bunch of people who tried to override the "close room when at 'max capacity'" rule, and succeeded, but didn't have enough chairs and no microphones at all. So my friends and I were stuck in the back not understanding a word that was being said.

I'm usually really patient with this kind of stuff, but did they really not anticipate these crowds?

I can't remember which hotel it was in at all, but it was several blocks away from the convention cente. It looks like they're having it in the Worthington Holiday Inn again so the location shouldn't be a problem. I don't really know how else to explain it, everything was separated and in smaller areas/rooms, whereas the convention center is very open. It was a bit confusing to navigate.
