Question from a newbie here.

I've recently figured out that the overall aesthetic and colors of mori look really god damn good on me, so I'm trying to get into it.

What are some specific things I should keep my eye out for when I go thrifting?

Also, what are some things I can search for when shopping online? Specific styles of dresses and skirts, materials, etc.

I don't really like taobao because I never have enough to make a big order, so it's not really worth it for me.

The best thing to do is just look at other mori girls, maybe have some pictures on hand while you're out shopping and find things with a similar look. It's not really much more complicated than that.

I haven't shopped online for mori ever since you can actually build a wardrobe secondhand with a lot of patience and time, but but searching for cardigans, tunics, sweaters, and maxi skirts could all yield good results depending on where you look. Go for natural fabrics cotton, wool, hemp, etc and sometimes it can be tempting to go for solid prints but make sure to get some patterns in there too, mori may look kind of dingy and worn but there's a distinct quirk about it too.

Hippie stores can sometimes carry easily mori-able items, especially long skirts. I've seen a lot of really cute outfits with shorter skirts lately too so that makes it easier to shop at stores now. Just make sure nothing is too form fitting (avoid words like "bodycon" and "pencil skirt" when shopping online, for example).

sorry for the novel, I hope that helped a little and wasn't too mori 101?

Review of >>7226705.

Mediafire folder with more photos: http://www.mediafire.com/?9fly77ek3jun3

All in all I'm quite happy with what I got.

1) item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=26645824404
White dress with beige lace.
Main fabric is very thin and gauzy cotton. Hasn't ripped yet, but I've only worn it a couple of times so far. Same fabric is used as lining. The unlined sleeves are rather transparent, the dress itself is lined and almost opaque, but a black bra would still show through.
Lace is thick, soft cotton.
On the underskirt there's a 5 cm stripe of thin netting between the OK lining and the nice lace. Looks kind of weird - about 2 cm of it peek out from under the main skirt.
Lots of loose threads, but no seams are coming apart.
Fits a petticoat really nicely.

7232289

Cont'd.

2) item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=23428924854
Axes Femme replica JSK.
Main fabric: polyester chiffon, feels OK. Gorgeous flocking print, crisp and detailed, feels lush. Lining: ugly cheap shiny polyester with a flounce of main fabric covered with thin netting.
Lace: Thin and terrible. Doesn't even match the colour of the dress (white VS cream). Also, they use a strip of netting as lace on top of the bodice. Thankfully, it's not at all prominent - it's only on the removable straps and under the bodice, where it's covered by a strip of netting.
Ribbon: Velvet, one-sided but nice looking.
Some loose threads.
The dress itself can fit a dozen petticoats (like the other dress, it's really generous with the fabric), but the lining is very narrow, maybe 100 cm in circumference.

3) item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=27189820204
Polka dot cropped bolero.
IT STINKS. The stink should go away soon as I give it a wash, though.
The knit fabric is nice, though I can't tell what it's made of. The crochet edging is really nice, made of a shimmering mercerised cotton. Sadly, it's offwhite whereas the polkadots are white. Because of the shimmer it's hardly noticeable, though.
The polkadots are made with some sort of stiff fabric paint, might show cracking in the future.
The buttons are sewn on securely, the seams are clean and nice.

that's pretty wasteful, anon. mori aesthetic calls for a return to the old country, where natural fabrics and lifestyles are preferred. (i am not saying mori is a lifestyle, haha, but the clothes themselves invoke greenness, definitely.)

I meant more like, what would a basic wardrobe look like in terms of items.
For example, as a lolita, you would want a plain dress, a skirt, a fancier dress, petticoats, a few different types of blouses, a jacket, a go-to bag, etc.
I'm still working on my taobao image collage, but I'll post it in a while. I already have some mori type stuff (thrifted free people and vintage sort of stuff), but I want to expand my mori wardrobe so that I can really wear it.

For basics I'd start with, a few maxi dresses, big sweaters, tights and over the knee socks,a few blouses. I always love finishing things off with a knit scarf and a nice cardigan.

Lolita is formulaic in a way that mori isn't. People ask this question all the time and rarely get answers because there's nothing that's explicitly required in mori and we can't read their minds and know how exactly they want to dress. For me, I felt like my wardrobe was fleshed out when I had a lot of cute jumpers, cardigans, long skirts, hats and scarves, mori-appropriate jewelry and shoes, etc., etc. (though I really need more sweaters, I think), but I like the understated approach and people who are into a more OTT aesthetic might want a lot of underskirts to layer with or a variety of cute socks and tights or whatever. Some people might even want to have pants instead of dresses or skirts. When you look at your wardrobe or go to make a mori coordinate, what's the missing thing that stops you from feeling like it's complete? I think that'll help you to narrow down what you need.

So this is all of the stuff I plan to buy from dearli.
I was also going to get one of their big, puffy coats, but the colourway I want is out of stock.

I also am buying things from a few other shops, such as cheaper cardigans, more skirts, stockings, etc.

Alright, today I went thrifting to try and begin a mori wardrobe, but I'm pretty lost. How do I avoid looking like a grandma? What is 'good' in terms of collared shirts? I prefer the 'dark mori' look so I'll probably try and have a a lot of black and dark greens and beiges as my base colors.
I'm so used to the formulated, rules-oriented lolita. But mori is way more practical for everyday. Anyway, mainly I'm having issues finding tops. I have a couple skirts that work already, and understand the layering concept for skirts pretty well. But tops? No. I don't get it. Thanks, guys.

If you're seeing frumpy old lady, you're seeing shit coords. A lot of people think earthy colours+long skirt+scarf=mori, without really taking into account the way things may drape on them. Half of the look is draping and layers, so if you're broader than your average Japanese person, and try to compensate by just making the clothing bigger, you're going to look less like a forest fairy, and more like a bag lady.

The guy is really just wearing jeans, boots, and a cardigan with some scarves and pelts. You could easily incorporate earth tones and maybe a few mori brooches/pins and whatnot into your outfit and have it look nice. I think it really just requires layering and a solid (as in good) colour palette.

While I don't think the looks on this blog are "mori" enough for my tastes, I think they're a good startin point.

I am just starting trying to do mori (mostly because I like the lifestyle/mentality behind it). This style is really hard for me... I am an hourglass, so if I find something that is loose and hangs on my boobs, then I look like I'm 200lbs (bag lady style) unless I accentuate my waist somehow.

I love love love this style but I want to look like a foresty person not someone who wears pillowcases.

So I'm having a hard time finding things that go together when they are *on* me.

So far all I can guess to do is wear a fitted shirt, then overlay a crop lace half shirt or long sheer "vest". I feel like there is more though.

You can wear belts with mori, you know. Also, wearing dresses with little drawstring waist cinchers and then layering lacey cardigans and shawls over them (and maybe a longer skirt under) is always an option.

My advice would be to look at as much inspiration (via tumblr, spoon, mori shops, etc.) and think about what would work with your wardrobe/body.
Mori doesn't really have a defined silhouette, although I think plenty of outfits end up looking a bit boxy/baggy. Your body type really doesn't put you at any more of a disadvantage than my super straight body type does.

I've bought a few things successfully off of store envy, mostly from artists. Look up reviews of the shop or person via google or tumblr before you buy. Then, always pay with paypal so that you can file a claim if you need to.

other key words to add to your search:
boho, gypsy, hippy, patchwork, etc.
just try to boil it down as much as possible to get the most out of your search
if you dont want to wait or risk getting bad product, i would suggest narrowing clothing searches down to your region as there's a lot of china sellers who make questionable quality clothing via ebay. (accessories are ok though)

I personally prefer fairly layered mori looks, so i would say that's a difference.
"Hippie style" always makes me think of just maxi dresses or long skirts with little layering. I think a lot of patterns (like puke-level paisley) are found in that sort of style that would not really be used in mori.
Also, rather than long, somewhat untamed straight-parted hair styles that are so common in hippie or boho styles, I think bangs are much more common in mori.
Mori would also incorporate more woodsy, cutesy, and sometimes weird accessories than hippie/boho.

Also, as a general rule, calling or wearing "gyspy" style clothing is bullshit and really shouldn't be done. I'm usually against calling out "cultural appropriation!!1!!", but this the commercialization of a certian "gyspy" aesthetic is really troubling, imo. Roma are still seriously persecuted throughout Europe and taking bits and pieces of their culture that you like while still treating them like shit is not okay.

sorry for the rant.

Uh, as a person living in a European country where gypsies are a big chunk of the population:
No one is doing jack shit to them, at least generally. Americans don't get this because "muh culture!!1 muh racism!!1" can be heard whenever someone calls someone a bad name, but honestly the Roma (not Irish gypsies that live in the States and UK) have some parts of their culture that aren't that welcome here or anywhere else.
Sure you have a LOT of Roma people that are well-adjusted in the society and have nice families and steady jobs, but a lot of them just cause trouble. They take one (1) baby to several municipalities to register it under different names as a citizen of x country so that they'd get more money, and then leave the country altogether after several months. They put their children in schools to avoid legal persecution but then forbid them to go and instead flee the country and marry them off. They pose as political refugees in multiple countries, live there for several months and then get deported. For those several months they get their accommodation and expenses paid by the govt and then take that money to wherever they came from to build big tacky houses (my country is particularly riddled by these, we are next to Romania and there's a huge community of Roma here)
They can be extremely violent for no reason, gang up against anyone (I'm talking huge families of brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, uncles coming together to kick someone's ass) that forbids them to start shit and a lot of time they beg on the streets while holding a child (usually not theirs) that's been drugged into oblivion. If any country dares speak up against them causing shit (stealing IS in their culture, by the way) and conning the government, most recently France and Germany, the Americans start QQing "racism!!!" even though they know jack shit about what the situation actually is like.

Oh and cultural appropriation isn't what you think it means.

OT, but Roma are treated shit here in Europe because that's the impression they've created for themselves. i.e. That they're filthy, thieving parasites who'll steal from your pocket and ruin the area they settle in with filth and petty crime. They pay nothing towards the state but still sponge on its services. The UK has an issue with Roma going to the UK purely to sponge of services like the NHS and welfare, and to commit petty crime like pickpocketing.

We know not all Roma are like this, but when the majority of a population that you encounter is like this, that negative opinion sticks. The issue is that the ones people are encountering are the shitty ones.

A different anon, but while yes, Roma can be problematic, they do indeed face discrimination. You need only look at the forced repatriation of Roma by the French or the numerous destructions of Roma settlements to see that. It's a disgrace to the EU.

Further marginalizing already marginalized groups isn't going to help integrate them into society and the justice system at all. The "examples" you just wrote simply show that you are ignorant and prejudiced.

All of this. I'm tired of the whole "you're just being racist" bullshit from people who haven't even met the actual Roma themselves and witnessed what they can be like. Especially those that say Eastern Europeans are racist for this, when we have a huge mix of different cultures and religions and no one is having trouble with anyone except them, and there's criminal reports to prove it. Recently the gypsy camp in Serbia was upgraded to mobile homes with running water, free electricity and some luxuries others have to pay for, and our country is incredibly poor as it is and unemployment is OVER 50%. What did the gypsies do when they moved into their new homes? They asked for free internet too.

Roma were deported back Romania and Bulgaria as they were citizens of those countries. All three are part of the EU.

I haven't heard of the castration thing, that's horrible and I'm honestly disgusted about that and really sorry to hear it, but the fact is they cause a lot of trouble and that is the reason they get deported. The Roma that come there legally, with papers, are allowed to stay and the Germans and French are squeamish around anyone coming from Eastern Europe. When a lot of people travel there from my country, we get interrogated like hell about where we're going, how long we'll stay, do we have any criminal offenses, who we have living in the country, etc while others stick around for a few seconds and they let them go. Recently they reinstalled visas for my country because Sweden complained about the surge of illegal immigrants from here after we got on the white schengen list or whatever.

You do realize that part of the reason they engage in such behaviours and have such a bad "rep" is a result of the fact that they've been discriminated against for more than half a millennium, right? People on the edge of society (you can say that they don't want to be integrated, however, I would argue that the governments haven't done much to truly help/accommodate them and their culture [which is not all thievery and child abuse, you know]) often behave in such ways because 1) "traditional" or lawful routes are not easily or not at all accessible , 2) there is a feeling that they can't get out of the cycle no matter what, 3) if people are going to see them as a bunch of thieving fucks, why even try?

The arguments you've presented are all fairly familiar to me, given that they're frequently used against African Americans in the US (where I am from) and by the older gen against Turkish people in Germany (where I now live and work). Some good points were made already, but "cute" things and fairytales can influence mori pretty strongly and neither of those factor into gypsy/hippie/boho, as far as I know. A lot of mori looks strive for girlish and youthful whereas the aforementioned usually read more to me like... free, wild, untamed? What about that bothers you?
I used to work in a secondhand shop and everything gets laundered before we put it on the shelves. If you want, you can take it home and launder it again.

I've always loved vintage things specifically BECAUSE they belonged to someone else before me. I like to imagine the stories behind them- my favorite are things that came from members of my family, like my great grandmother's school medal, which she won for having the best grades.

Did you have to wear handme downs as a kid or something? Does it bother you when you buy new items from shops with fitting rooms that someone else probably tried on? Is it a germ thing?

If you want vintage stuff that's never been worn, lookup "new old stock" on etsy or ebay. All of those items were produced then unsold and they sat in a warehouse somewhere without being used.

These. My current shopping list involves a cute warm hat, a lace maxi skirt to layer under things, a maxi sweater coat like the ones that were popular in the early 2000s, and 3-4 gunne sax style blouses.

I live where it's super cold, so the hardest thing to find is thick maxi skirts- the kind that are warm instead of sheer, summerweight type things.

Also, I think for mori in general you can never have too many knit accessories like scarves, armwarmers, leg warmers, boot socks, hats, etc.

I've noticed that mainstream stores like American Eagle often have some pretty moriable sweaters if you either buy a size up or pair them with an extra flowy skirt.

Just some pointers in this thread about the Roma.

They're not a European ethnic group, they came from the Indian subcontinent, they are interlopers on our continent.

They're responsible for a disproportionate amount of crime wherever they go. But in this case I guess "victim blaming" is ok, they must commit all that crime because of... erm... cultural appropriation? lol.

France are well within their rights to deport them. But it's inconsistent, France should be deporting boatloads of Algerians and other North and sub-Saharan Africans too.

There is nothing wrong with Nationalism. Part of the reason you're on this board is because you idolize a highly xenophobic, nationalist country's unique culture. So basically, by importing immigrants you import the costs of having to accommodate their negative externalities?

Why import them in the first place then? Simply remove them from the Nation/Body politics, and you remove the associated problems.

It's funny you're complaining about nascent German desires to control their borders as "nationalism" in relation to Turks of all people, some of the most jingoistic, fervently nationalistic people on Earth.

I really wish this was true but it's not. Sure, be happy with the skin you're in and enjoy various fashions etc and whatnot, I don't think being over certain measurements means you're necessarily 'fat' however, Japanese measurements are approximately the following:

Japanese 'S' = bust 31 waist 22-23 inches
Japanese 'M' = bust 33 waist 24-25 inches
Japanese 'L' = bust 35-37 waist 26-28 inches

Having recently come back from Japan, I can tell you now that a Japanese 'L' is only slightly larger than a UK 10, in some cases smaller compared to the brands that are very inconsistent or use 'vanity sizing'.

>> No.7256780

>>7256774
The measurements you listed were smaller than a UK 10, though? Maybe it's because of my short height and weird shape, but I almost always wear a 6-8, and I'm 33-34/26.5/32.

To anons worrying about sizing, I think that most mori is really accommodating to slightly chubbier girls, particularly if you've large hips/legs, as the clothing is rather voluminous.

>> No.7256796

>>7256780
Sizing can be a funny thing, especially considering if you have a short or long torso etc etc. Plus as most items are not very high waisted, you can 'get away' with wearing smaller clothing than your size and still have it fit well, particularly if you have small hips. If you look at most women's UK size charts, a 10 is between 26-28 inch waist with a 33-36 bust, this doesn't take into account all the vanity sizing that goes on though.

I agree that mori clothing in general is very forgiving and is often designed to be worn very loose and not form-fitting at all. I would check the style first to be sure and if possible check how the clothing sits on the models.

>> No.7256817

In the USA it varies hugely depending on what store you go to.
I'm fat. I'm not going to lie. I have a bust between 40 and 44 inches depending on weight fluctuations. In most "ladies'" brands I wear a size large, in most "junior's" brands I wear XL, and in most high end brands, I'm a 2xl if my size is carried at all.

TBH I'd really rather have no vanity sizing. It seems like people in the UK, for instance, generally know they're a UK whatever size all the time because a UK 18 is a UK 18.

An american size means jack shit. I have skirts in my closet that are a size six, and tops that are a size medium.

>> No.7256833

>>7256817
UK sizes are weird. Men's are in inches while women's are some arbitrary number (that doesn't go to zero at the same size as american zero...). Even with inch measurements, you've got about 4 inches between the actual measurement and the one it says on the tags.

Those 4" are a mishmash combination of stretch allowance (when fabrics are now much stretchier) and vanity.

the only solution is to make your own clothes.

>> No.7256843

UK is suffering from vanity sizing too. In the past few years, the sizes have gotten bigger. I used to wear a UK size 10 and I've dropped to between a size 6 and 8 while staying at the exact same measurements. Oh actually, I lie. I have gotten bigger hips and breasts and somehow dropped a dress size.

>> No.7256860

>>7256833
Agreed, the vanity sizing in the UK is starting to go the way of the US. I own clothes from a UK 4-12, all of which fit perfectly well. I'm supposed to be a UK 8 but I've bought clothes without trying them on that fit friends that are two dress sizes larger. One of the main problems I find are 'floating' waistbands where the clothing doesn't properly sit on your waist or hips. Vanity sizing works though frustratingly, I often hear girls celebrating the fact that they fit into a 'smaller' size the last time they went shopping, even when they haven't lost any weight. I try to stay away from the subject though since telling a girl that's larger than me that it's all bullshit would make me sound like a complete asshole bitch. Besides, my figure isn't very nice, I'm just on the small side by UK standards. It would be nice to talk about the subject though without fearing that I'm just attempting to declare how fabulously slim I am or other such crap.

So try getting skirts from taobao occasionally, and get sweaters and tops from etsy.

I'm the fat person with the 44 max bust from earlier in the thread- I find cute vintage blouses and dresses on there all the time.

Oh skirts aren't an issue. I was kind of trying to chime in on the sizing conversation. I've never tried taobao, I don't think I'm ready to try to figure it out yet.

I have had great success at the local thrifts. I used to be a size L, and the selection available to me as a now size M is so much bigger at the thrifts.

People above said they were looking for belts.

I think this belt could work for mori... you could make it really easily and I bet you could add some crochet accents right down the middle, or make crochet ties, or something.

UK mori girl here. Been watching this thread for a while now I have the following to add: Primark. This store seems to have Tumblr knowledge as they stock mori girl items as well as hipster stuff. Aside from that, previous anon is right, ebay is a gold mine but be specific in your search. Tips: Oxygen do mori style shoes. I use gingham and check or tartan when I refine my searches for smocks and my best finds are from personal sellers NOT ebay shops. Cheaper too.

But that's why you measure yourself at home and look at charts to find your size. At the store you take your size, one lower and one higher and go try it on. That's why people have changing rooms. Also, not all cuts suit you even if they are your size.

You'd think so, but even men have to deal with vanity sizing bullshit. I'd argue that they have it worse when it comes to vanity sizing, because while our number sizing was arbitrary to begin with, theirs was supposed to correspond to their actual measurements.

Well, maybe it's more the layering--I love it, but I live in a climate where most of these outfits would be impractical. I also prefer more fitted clothes, but that's a personal style thing; I know I can take mori concepts and tweak that to fit my aesthetic.

Generally, I am looking for more nature/natural focused style keywords or buzzwords to make internet searching for inspiration a bit easier.

Ah, I see. I was going to say, if it's just the layering, you don't have to layer a lot for an outfit to be mori, but I do think loose clothing is pretty important to the style overall. Sorry I don't have any other suggestions for you, though.

Guess it's time for a new thread.
