It's only a month away so lets have a discussion about lucky packs.

Lets I say I am going to Japan again for the second time in a year for Comiket and New Years. I understand many stores in Japan release lucky packs to get rid of unwanted merchandise as it's considered to keep it after the new year. How does one go about trying to buying them? Which brands will be releasing lucky packs? Are they released on January 2nd since the day before most places would be closed for the New Year?

The lucky packs go on sale early on January 2nd and it's a lot of lines. In some areas, lucky packs go on sale for a few days. Tokyo Fashion did some pretty good coverage on it last year:

I was in Japan last year over New Year's and went luckypack shopping, so these answers are from first-hand experience.

Some places do online reservations, which have started already, some of which have already sold out (Liz Lisa's ¥20k pack and Amavel's, for example).
Otherwise, line up early. Sometimes this means prioritizing as to which brand is most important - my friend and I lined up 2 hours before the mall we were at opened (in Osaka), split up, and were able to get everything we wanted there (Liz Lisa and Ank Rouge). We went to other areas of Osaka afterward and some places were totally sold out (like Axes Femme), some places had plenty left (like Swimmer and Innocent World), and some places had the less popular packs still in stock, but others sold out (like Angelic Pretty).

Nearly every store in Japan releases them - including places like Starbucks. If you're not sure, check their website.

For the most part, things are released on the 2nd - however, like >>7222171 said, Laforet does theirs on the 1st and many stand-alone stores in Harajuku follow suit. Check the websites, they always announce when luckypacks will be on sale by mid-December.
Also note that they have big sales at New Year's too, along with luckypacks - some places start the sales on the same day, while others start them later (IW for example does luckypacks on the 2nd, but their sale starts on the 3rd).

In your experience, how long would you say you were out shopping for packs if you woke up really early before the mall opened? Assuming you went straight for the packs you wanted. Is it just really long lines or were you in and out within minutes after store opening?

And I really want a liz lisa trunk. Last year they sold out online pretty early but had a lot in stock at the physical stores a week before New Years day as well the day of. I had an SS get a trunk for me then. I hope that's the case this year!

We were out the whole day pretty much, but the only time we really spent in line was 1) at the first mall since it hadn't opened yet and 2) when I was purchasing some sale items at Axes Femme - the line was insane there for whatever reason, even though the luckypacks had sold out several hours earlier. Oh, and we also spent about 45 minutes waiting for the Rilakkuma store to open after that (mall opened at 10am, we were in and out within 15 minutes or so, Rilakkuma store opened at 11am). Everywhere else was very crowded, but we didn't have to wait too long. A vast amount of the time was actually spent traveling, since we went to three different wards of Osaka that day and were staying in a fourth.

You should be ok getting a trunk in-store. I'd try the Harajuku shop on the 1st, and if there isn't any left there, you can try 109 on the 2nd - that way you have two chances just in case.

I own a fair bit of ETC. Best suited to smaller busts (I reckon around 35inches) probably 30 inch waists max? I'm not sure. Obviously they have shirred/high waist/no waist/loose stuff now and then which is much more accommodating.

Older items tends to run smaller, but the length of the dresses are a god send for me (I'm 5'10) they're longer than most lolita dresses and reach a couple inches just above my knees while a lot of AP/baby is mid/upper thigh length, so good for us taller folk. I'd imagine they'd be fairly long on short people?

Jane Marple tends to be much roomier than ETC by comparison.

For the record I'm 34 inch bust, 26 inch waist, technically 28E bra if that is any help.

Yeah, most of them are pretty cheap, except for the huge IW packs but you do get a shitload for that price.
In my opinion the lower priced packs (ap, baby, meta, etc) are just as well worth it as the huge IW packs, and the quality is pretty good.

Misty sky and sweet cream house are re-releases so I don't think it'll be them.
