I always found this girl to be super sweet and helpful with her tutorials. Her costumes are usually simple but so well made and that's worth a thousand ballgowns poorly executed.

Also who else wished there it would be panels in conventions. They could be really productive and help with the dead time that plagues portuguese cons.

The only things that saddens me a bit its how much segregated the community is and how small the ratio of cosplayers is on the rest of the country not counting the capital. I think I know maybe four cosplayers from Coimbra, one from Albufeira and one from Porto.
is is because of the quantity of events?

>> No.7200914

>>7200911
There are as many events in Porto as in Lisbon, maybe even more. In the rest of the country, there's an event everywhere, except maybe Alentejo.

Events are much smaller, ofc, but it's not a question of quantity, more like quality.

>> No.7200915

I think it's because in Portugal cosplay started in Lisbon first like 12years ago so it had more time to develop.

In Porto and other cities is relatively young, in a few years maybe it will be different. The difference in the community now and tree years ago is astonishing, it will definitely continue to grow.

It's not wise to compare Iberanime to the rest of the trend of events. It's like worlds apart from everything else. Still, the OPO has less people.

Also, I see that a lot of people from Lisbon go to other cities, but people from other cities get stuck there and complain they don't have big events. Every other week someone appears saying "why isn't there an event at *city in the middle of nowhere*" and they don't make the effort to travel around.

I wasn't really comparing Iber to anything, I just said I saw quite a lot of cosplayers there. I know quite a few cosplayers from Porto too.
But yeah, I got your point.

And that is pretty true, I only know a handful of people who live in places scattered around Portugal who travel to cons, most just complain there isn't a con in their cities, wherever they might be.
I understand that transports get really expensive but it's a bit pointless to complain about no cons in the middle of nowhere.

dont anyone wish the prizes were a bit better at cosplay competitons? At Iberanime you only get stupid IA merchandize and at others competitions it seems you only get a certificate. I wish it was in like other countries where you get sewing materials, cash prizes or trophies. I once saw a girl post about wining a trophy though so maybe in five years we can start getting those?

>> No.7201084

>>7201077
Actually, most of the times you win gift certificates that you can use at some merchandise store. But yes, it would be nice if they gave something that was cosplay related (like sewing machines or prop materials)

>> No.7201085

>>7201077
Remember that most cons here are still made by people from within the community and not big companies with sponsors and shit that could afford something like that. Cash prizes would be a great incentive at competitions because good cosplays require quite a lot of money but most cons can't afford to give that much to cosplayers.

Everything at a con costs money, which is covered by the entrance costs. It's not unusual to see people bitching about the price of the entry tickets but they forget that money is what makes the con actually happen, nothing is for free. In those costs would be included the cosplay competition prizes. Some cons already gave out money at the competitions but it's never a big sum of money, of course. It's a start, though.

>> No.7201088

specially because when spanish danish or italian threads like this pop up they always talk about prizes that are fenomemal when compared to ours.

You also have to consider how much time and energy entering the masq is. At larger cons you need to show up for multiple check-ins for sound tests and judging sessions not to mention you gotta REALLY be early for when the show starts. Given how long the show is, thats' a good chunk of your time out the window. When you add in pre show practice sessions and meetings then you can see why people can spend an entire day on all this stuff.

You gotta understand that with a con I'm spending a lot of time and money to get there. Spending all that effort and work just for one event doesn't sound appealing to a lot of people who just want to enjoy the con for being a con.

>> No.7201246

>>7201223

That is actually a valid reason, but not many "normal" contests really have all those restrictions. Most of the times you just show up, confirm that you're at the con, get dressed and show up early to the contest.

The only competition when all that happened was this year's Iberanime OPO, and they still managed to screw things up.

When I said to grow a pair, was to the cosplayers that don't take part in contests because they're afraid of drama or they think they're not gonna win so fuck it. It's just a really shitty way of thinking, IMO.

To follow OP's suggestion, who are your favorite pt cosplayers and why?
What would you like to see them cosplay?

Also, what cons are you looking forward to?

>> No.7202244

>>7202227
Since I know a lot of people, it's hard to say "this one is my favourite", because it would be weird to say a "friend/aknowledgement" is a favourite...

And, this year, I'll probably not go to any more cons. The one at Azambuja is out for me due to professional reasons and I don't know of more. So, the Photoshoot next year! I'm looking forward to it!

>> No.7202258

You can always post a pic of one or two you like and say why, you don't have to pick a single favorite!

There will be Midori in December, too. I'm looking forward to Photoshoot as well, it's always a fun day!

>> No.7202263

Midori, I was invited to that one but I did not get what it was... Is it just a party or a "real" con? I said I'd not go, but if it's something more than a meet I will certainly be there!

When I get home I'll post some pictures!

It will be an event, they just called it "Christmas Party" since it'll be pretty close to Christmas and there will be some holiday related activities or something, I'm not sure. But it's a "real" con, not a meet!

im from the North and though I usually attend the southern events I'll stick for the ones here until the end of the year. I'll go to the meets and to the Christmas party that is being held here.

As for fav cosplayers I usually tend to like certain cosplays and not cosplayers. I specially loved the underground ones, I shit my pants when a saw Death from Sandman once.

>> No.7202408

Personally, I dislike the idea of "meets". If I want to hang out with my friends, I call them instead of making a facebook event, inviting tons of people I don't know and call it a "meet". I find them useless and I never felt integrated when I went to them, so I stopped going.

It does not help that I'm probably one of the oldest cosplayers around and most "meets" are hosted by teens.

You can also post the cosplays you like and state why (or not, you can just post to keep the thread going with nice cosplays), rather than a favorite cosplay.

I get the feeling that the people who dislike meets dont really bother to socialize tough. They just go and tare at other people chatting. I started going with my cousin and I just met a few people but now I know the whole group who usually appears although I made only two friends from it. Specially here meets keep us in touch with one another because everyone is from several cities scattered through Aveiro, braga and Porto and you get o cosplay with friends so even if you are in a public space you feel at ease since you are not the only basket case there.

There are also some small dramas here and there for really retarded reasons and there are controversial people in our small community too.
I feel hat we are experience cosplay the way Lisboetas did. It started small with few of us in shitty malls and now its getting bigger, more people come to parties and meets, the cosplay is still evolving and once it reaches a certain level the number of people competing will decrease a lot and people will start to group up though I hope it will be another direction we take.

I forgot to add that here people arent really interested in promote themselves at all. Few have facebook pages and the photos are always so dark and low quality. You also have people with really nice cosplays who show up the next party with plain clothes a wig because and I quote "didn't feel like it, just want to have fun". Basically they don really care that much to pop up a big cosplay at all. I remember in Halloween being like 35 competing and costumes were very poor quality and still everyone had fun.
tl;dr Cosplay is lived diferently and perhaps thats why there's such a big gap in quality/quantity north vs south

Kinda drifting from your post but I personally think that you can attend a con in a simple cosplay to just have fun but at the same time taking care of your imagine. You're putting yourself out there for others to see, you'll have your picture taken. Even if you're just having fun, you can at least make sure your costume is not falling appart and that you don't just look ridiculous.
I'm so sick of seeing people shove on a wig and call it "cosplay". Yes, you can go and have fun, no you don't have to be in full costume but least look put together.

I guess many people don't really care and I'm just being an asshole.

Bu there are lots of costumes who are indeed plain clothes. Just look at dragana cosplay of K. you can literally go out like that and nobody will care. What you post has to be made from scratch or at least altered and either way it does lock costumey or funny to innocent bystanders. Its a popular thing to hate on the shove a wig and clothes call it cosplay but you still need to pay closer attention to details, accessories, make up, shes etc. Thats why simple costumes are tricky. even L has some degree of difficulty with the right type of make up and the posture you must keep to be in character.

>> No.7202443

YES. Exactly my point. People just don't bother and make no effort, they just put on a wig and call it "casual cosplay", even. Then proceed to make a photoshoot of it and plaster it on dA and facebook.

Neither its mine but it doesnt stop me from having fun and meeting other people. Some times I even ended being the one to scream and hump because the mood is just much more relaxed. You also have your issues than can be just as annoying to those kids as you think hey are.

>> No.7202446

That's not the point. Cosplays of characters who wear plain clothes are just like any other cosplay, as long as the character DOES wear those clothes.

Thing is... I'm old (not that anon you're answering to, but also old). I'm all for making friends with 15 y/o kids, but I have nothing in common with them. They are talking about school and I only have a boring job to talk about. They are talking about the anime flavour-of-the-season and I'd like to talk about 70s anime. They are trippin' with the latest j-rock OP and I try to talk about Yellow Magic Orchestra. I suppose that in 7 years I'll be able to hold a conversation, but at the moment I can't integrate with the kids.

Sometimes I meet a group at a con (I usually go alone, so I mix with different people everytime) and I ask "do you wanna go to an after-party?" and they say "I can't because my parents won't let me". Then I realize that this is not my demographics.

I still cosplay because I love it, but I restrict it to events and avoid random "meets", especially when nobody I know is going.

I also do not agree very much with cosplaying outside of events, as I don't see any objective besides the "shock value" to the normies (and then complaining online about "all the weird looks")

Its hard not to find at least one person you relate with, some even bring their kids. has for after-parties I wont say they exist after meetts but after events and parties thats a certainty though only a handful go.

But I disagree with your last point. I dont see why cosplaying should only be done in events at all specially because of photoshoots or special occasions. yes I was the retard that went to the movie premiere once in costume but i had fun, cheered for one of my favorite franchise and no one glanced at me at all. I think that you have to be "gracious" (on the lack of a better word) when cosplaying in public. I believe there is a difference between a photoshoot when you have an /objective/, ie. taking some nice pictures, and cosplaying just for the heck of it. You wouldn't cosplay to school or work. The same way, I feel like there is no objective besides "being edgy" in cosplaying without an objective.

In fact, I don't care much. If I found some random kid cosplaying in the street, most likely I'd be happy and ask for a cell phone picture (already happened). It's just when15 people do it and scream "I'M COSPLAYING RESPECT ME" that it kind of annoys me

Not my intention to sound snobbish. I guess we just communicate with others differently.

Every event or con (and I go to a LOT of them) I meet a bunch of new people. We then proceed to add each other on facebook. But then it does not develop. I have my friends; they have their friends; none of these intersect, the interests are too different... We keep being friends on facebook, but we never talk. When we pass each other on a con, we'll greet, but nobody will ask "how are things going?" or "is everything ok?" It seems almost like a competition on who has more friends, who meets more people, who gets more photos. The community is VERY small and we all know each other. But do we care about each other? Not really. Out of the hundreds of people I know, I only talk to a dozen. Out of those, I only hang out outside of events with two or three. It's not that I don't want to make more friends, I absolutely love people, but there seems to be an "entry barrier" between groups.

As a person that does not belong to any group, I often feel excluded and unwelcome.

Sage because this is just a personal view on all of this, not by all means I say that this is true. It's just how I feel about "meets" and "meeting people outside cons"

The state of cons in Portugal is atrocious to say the least. The only one with an actually good budget (and therefore, conditions) is Iber, but the only thing Iber really wants is your money. There's no community spirit anymore and everything is sterile, boring, soulless. Aside from the stands there (which are tucked away into some far-off backwards corner to not bother the actual shops doing business) there's nothing made for the community by the community anymore. This doesn't happen even in big US cons: there's all sorts of panels and so on in cons like Otakon, some people have done fanwork for it since the 90s, and this simply doesn't happen here.
It also negatively influences Cosplay because you always end up getting the same few people every time: everyone else is pretty much indirectly shunned away and those few who aren't HAVE to join them in some way, and they're present in some way in the running of conventions, so you WILL run into them.
It's also tragic that the only place that there can even be constructive criticism of cosplay in Portugal and not mindless flattery is on 4chan. If you dare criticize a cosplay/er (in the higher "ranks" so to speak) openly, you get marked for your life as "the one that talked shit about me/my friend", they'll instantly whine on Facebook pretending they're not hurt of being criticized (fairly or unfairly it's always unfair to the cosplayer), and in some cases they'll be outright harrassed. This really isn't a good way to promote new cosplayers at all and sadly these people are the trendsetters in places of power.

The influx of new people is not constant and many people that go to one con (usually Iber) don't come back, so there's not new blood and things stay the same over the years because nobody bothers anymore.

But I agree that the events should go back to having panels and more workshops given by the people of the community. Also, they should totally go back to screening anime.

I think that the crossplayers, Dragana and Marta are improving a lot from the first time they started cosplaying. I remember seeing them for the first time in baggy costumes, with no binders and with their wigs all unstyled and now I see them with their wigs well cut and costumes well made and with tons of different makeups for each different character! They have improved a lot and their photos have been getting better and better.

I usually lurk around here and I really hope I could got to some american cons only because of the panels and workshops. They have literally every aspect of cosplay covered, wigs, prop making, basic sewing, patterns, advanced sewing, sewing techniques, shoes etc... and I feel that it affects positivily the level of cosplay tehre

I know APC has done some work in this areas but I wish they would invest more and bigger. Like in Iber they have sometimes six people sit there just staring but those are skilled persons who could, given a room, give a nice panel or workshop. I'm pretty sure they could do this in Iber, that con is flowing with empty rooms. I wish they would be more active on facebook too.

I also love Kurosisters and their work, I get the feeling that not many cosplayers that are achieving a high level are appearing at all, more like they are fewer cosplayers that could represent us internationally.

When you talked about Dragana's K cosplay and said how simple it looks and said that simple costumes should not be considered cosplay
well she even painted her skate to have it looking like Yata's. And modified her pants and shirt to look like his. She admitted not having spent any money on making this costume, but she did spend hours modifying her clothes for him and looking for shoes like his and headphones.

And since you're all eager to know about Dragana's Yata cosplay, here's a manga image. Yata's clothes are not as baggy as they are in anime and she has made that costume in September of 2012. I know it because it was right after the school started that we started reading Memory of Red and she said "I'M GONNA COSPLAY THE SKATER BOY AND RAP ABOUT AVRIL LAVINGE." <- this is even on her facebook if you scroll down to 2012's September. She even had a webcam shoot with the costume and she went to tinychat with Azu Hacete and posted caps of their chat about how cockroachish Mikoto looked like.
So stop this drama, please. She doesn't start the drama, so don't start it either. She's a nice person and she does accept criticism, when people are right. And she improved a lot thanks to it. But the criticism about this cosplay is wrong. She made it accurate (excluding the shoes which she didn't want to paint yet.) :|

Hello,
this is my first time using 4chan, so I'd appreciate if you could read this:
I'm sorry about the drama caused about my cosplays and I apologize if I was ever rude to you or if I ever offended you. I thank you for posting these stuff here because if no one told them to me, I'd never know I offended someone or not, since I don't realize when I or when I don't hurt someone. I'm sorry if I caused a big misunderstanding from my side and I'd like you all to know that I'm grateful you posted what bothered you about me, so I know what I should change about myself for the better. I will learn how to accept criticism and will be more polite about my criticism as well, so I don't hurt anyone by my comments and just tell people how they could improve.
As for my Yata cosplay, it was based on manga's first chapters and GoRa scans, back in September of 2012 and back then there weren't many reference images on this character, so, yes, my cosplay looks like trash. It was also meant to be work for a crack CMV, so the shoot were just quick pictures we took between the filming. I want to remake it from scratch and get new shoes for him, since I want an actual photoshoot of K.
And about the costumes I make and buy... I did buy a few of my cosplays, but most of them were actually made by me. I also usually go for simple looking characters, because I never came across a bling blingy character I like and I also lack skills to make a bigger costume. My last costume, Radu Barvon's, was the only complex one and I do want to improve at cosplay, so this was just a start.
Once again, thank you for posting what you trully think of me and I'd appreciate if you could tell me through a message or in person (I wouldn't get mad about it), because I would like to change what bothers people about my personality
As for dA, I believe you're talking about M.ichi and it was a joke, but she took it as an insult and we quit talking after that (we were friends before btw)

There are many cons scattered through the year but at the top of my head, we have Photoshoot which is more of a huge outside cosplay meetup in February, Iberanime that I think was in April..? Anicomics in May. We had a new con this year, Anifest, in September, Amadora BD in November and we'll have Midori in December.
The dates aren't always the same so take them as a guess for next year.

Hmm, don't get your expectations very high, cons in Portugal are relatively new and very small compared to cons in bigger countries. You always have cosplay contests, karaoke, game room, workshops, artist tables, stores, those kinds of things but the main attraction is usually just socializing, talking to other people and hanging out. That said, I think you can have a good time.
The biggest con is Iberanime but due to several organization issues it's not one of my favorites. I like Photoshoot, but that's more of a gathering during Carnaval than a con, really.

Something that could change is definitely the make up, in the community, old and new.
The problem with make up tho, is that its not an easy thing to do. I'm pretty sure that people who do their eyes and lips think its enough because they don't know how to properly do skin care and make up.

I can assure you it is a good excuse, even with the amount of tutorials out there for it. Its still not an easy thing to do, unless you have some practice. And to practice you need materials, and make up is really not cheap.

Even I do my make up for cosplays, and I feel still that I'm far from at least good. So I can understand how make up is a problem.

Basic make up workshops at cons would be a good idea. Or someone with a little stand doing make up. The thing is, I'm sure they wouldn't do it for free, because... make up is expensive.

But the show is one of the most important things? Up on the stage, you don't see shitty sewing. The public (and jury) want to see a good show, a skit that entertains. Of course costumes have to be important in a competition, the jury needs to see the costumes up close too. But in WCS's case, the competition itself values the show/skit over the costumes. LOVE CHIBI

Não há melhor prova de diva quando me intitulam de um comentário que não o fiz no 4chan. A cena está mesmo a ficar agreste e os cosplayers não se sabem para onde virar. Dudes, chill the fuck out and share cosplay — a sentir-se especial.

Now we can keep on the verbal drama

>> No.7204508

Then you keep the verbal drama, there are people who actually are interested in sharing and seeing good pt cosplays

>> No.7204509

this thread reminds me a bit tooga, at first it was actually pretty friendly and then things got out of control and adm even deleted the board.

Dont go the same path, lets reunite again in some time and post relevent content, pictures opinions etc. you don always need to have nice things to say but at least keep it civilized. you can do that right?

1 - Leonor had breakfast with IA staff before WCS.
2 - Chibi said that smart people would be participating in WCS. She wasn't in it, so she called herself stupid.
3 - IA can't organize shit, they didnt even read the rules.
4 - Anyone who thinks anything goes fair with APC or IA, never went to an event of theirs.
