I've worked with two women photographers and probably around 30 male photographers. Experiences with the female photographers were fine, both of them provided makeup artists and the photos came out great. Male photographers were a mixed bag, but also there was obviously a much larger sample size. Sometimes they made me uncomfortable, sometimes they made me feel great. Picture quality varied. I know some of them jerked off to the pictures, I don't really care as long as they don't treat me inappropriately.

Tl;dr It doesn't really matter to me in general.

I'm like a 4, maybe 5/10 anyway and don't really do "sexy" cosplay so I'm pretty sure there's no fapping (or schlicking) being done. Regardless, a photographer is a photographer. As long as I get some quality pictures, I couldn't care less. I have a few male photog buddies and they're all pretty decent (both in personality and picture quality).

Most of my prefered photogs happen to be men actually, but I only prefer working with them because we are friends outside of cons. I am generally more comfortable shooting with someone I know well, like I'm more comfortable taking risks because I know these people will tell me what does and does not work.

>> No.7192300

As a guy photag, it's understandable that girls would prefer female photags more. Saying that, I've still had a reasonable amount of females ask me for photoshoots.

>> No.7192367

I don't really care, I figure if my photo ends up online and some guy decides he's going to fap to that, it's really no different if it's a random internet guy or the guy that took the photo. Honestly I doubt I'm in anyone's porn folder, I don't dress skimpy and I'm not hot. I have a friend though that refuses to let guys take her picture because she thinks all male photographers are creepers and just want her pic for the spank bank, even though she's maybe a 6/10 and married.

>> No.7192396

I don't care. When people are taking pics, I only see the camera and don't really remember the person (unless they do something memorable) since there are too many people who ask. I do like it when families take pics of me with their kids though, I think it's cute.

>> No.7192990

I guess I would rather have my photo taken by a female then an equally talented male, just since they understand my mindset a little better and are easier to feel comfortable around.

As long as they are polite and respectful gender doesn't really matter. My favorite photographer in the cosplay community is female, but that's because of the quality of her work. I've "worked" with four females, one was really good, two were okay, and one was really shitty. In general it's much easier for a guy to come off as creepy, and several male photogs have. Not run in the other direction creepy, but certainly the type you wouldn't trade contact info with. I don't do any skimpy costumes so I've never felt like I was being photographed just to be masturbated over, even if I've thought the photogs were sketchy.

Outside of cosplay I have had a few really negative experiences with male photographers. Really scummy guys who make you feel gross even though they never touch you or see you outside of your clothing. Left those shoots as soon as I could and never returned.

Hello /cgl/

I'm a very well known photographer within the cosplay scene.
I am pretty tight with most other big photographers that do cosplay worldwide. These guys tell me everything. Trust me. Everything.

Yes. Sometimes we love shooting skimpy stuff with hot girls. But I can confirm that we don't really fap to this shit. Not because it's wrong, but because most of us can get pussy.
It's possible that the lower tier of photographers take pictures just to fap to but I think even that is unlikely.

There you have it. This thing people speak of in this thread simply isn't true.
We do show each other pictures of hot shoots though. That part is true.

I'm not a fan of the chick, in fact I'm pretty sure we don't especially like one another but her cosplays don't suck. They seem pretty well made and thought out.

I think she has a point. I've been cosplaying for longer than her and I am also giving the side eye to what it has become. This past D*con I saw a lot of what she was saying. People are caring way less about the costume now and more about the looks of the person in it. Ahahaha. This is just precious.

If you go to a con dressed up, expect to have your picture taken.
Take it as a compliment that someone liked your costume + face + body enough to even point a camera in your direction.
Acting all high and mighty and assuming every man who takes a picture of you is malicious is pure fantasy and shows how terribly dtuck up you are.
There are tons of pictures of women on the internet who are much more attractive than you, dont be full of yourself.

As a photographer my handsome face and focused personality open many doors and people biasedly assume i wouldnt fap to tgeir cosplay pics.
Of course you dusgusting 3Dpd are not what im interested in, too easy, I take pictures of otaku, fat neckbeards are the true spirit of the convention.

>> No.7206328

I'm a photographer. I could fap to anything if I wanted to. Who cares.
When I do a shoot though, even when the model is nude and showing me her asshole, I don't let it affect my professionalism. I feel privelaged to be able to obtain that comfort level with my models and have a good time doing what I do. I also shoot a lot of cosplay, in and outside of conventions.

Gender has nothing to do with anything. If you have a problem with a photographer who is trying to be creepy, then you should just be more selective.

One thing to keep in mind is that for some photographers, our social bubbles are really fucked up. An example is if you are with a bunch of friends and somebody points out a really spectacularly pretty person and people make note of that person and say how hot they are or whatever, but nobody goes and talks to them because of intimidation. I walk up and talk to the person and introduce myself and let them know that I am a photographer and would love to work with them. Boyfriend with them or not. So, doing that for years may have made me a bit more forward than most people are used to.
I am saying this because if a photographer suggests something that may seem questionable, you can't see what they see and maybe you might just be feeling overly sensitive.

>> No.7216698

There are really only two photographers I've used for paid/planned photoshoots over the years, and both are men. Really for me it is less about gender, and more about if the photographer makes me feel comfortable in general.

I've had both male and female photographers pull me aside during conventions before to ask for private shots, which is fine, and honestly I've received amazing pictures this way. However, I have also had photographers, both male and female, become inappropriate during these times. If that ever happens, then you just excuse yourself and leave, it really doesn't have to become a huge ordeal.... Just make a mental note to try and avoid that photographer in the future.

I guess my point is, that regardless of gender, when doing a photoshoot what matters most is that you are fully comfortable (especially if you are actually paying for the photoshoot, you are the client!) If a photographer is trying to make you do a pose or angle you are not comfortable with, say so, if they keep pushing, then simply end the shoot. It really doesn't have to be the huge drama a lot of people make it out to be on here.

I'm sure most of you here on /cgl/ are nice guys who don't grope women, try to take upskirt shots, or harass cosplayers.

The fact is, there are some people out there who do. A lot of these people are heterosexual men who lack self-discipline. You all know someone like that, your more-of-an-acquaintance friend who whines a lot and can't ever seem to get laid.

These guys are socially inept and can't have relationships and sex like you normal men.
These men decide it's not their fault they can't get laid, it's the fault of every woman who isn't interested in them.

So they become assholes to women. In front of you they might be rude or make mean comments. When they are alone with a woman then become defensive and hostile. They delude themselves into thinking every woman in the world owes them sex and attention.

You normal men don't see it because they don't grope or harass you, they don't do it in front of men who might come to our rescue.

Every time I hear "Stop making things up" I realize that most good men are oblivious to these freaks. I wish they weren't, I wish when we told our stories of harassment and assault men asked "Who did it and where can I find them?" instead of immediately writing it off as a lie. People should be outraged at the behavior of these guys. They are out there and someone should beat the crap out of them and tell them to quit feeling sorry for themselves and learn some social skills instead of taking their failure out on everyone else.

I'm sure you nice men on /cgl/ did not know about these men and how present they are [statistics say you know at least one rapist, and one of these assholes - maybe the same person, maybe not]. Now you know. So when you are at a con and see one of these weirdos harassing a woman, realize that we're all representing our gender and maybe they should try to represent it a little better for the rest of you.

>> No.7227169

If a woman is going to go out of her way to dress as an icon, then it's more than likely that a guy who idolizes said icon may or may not also want to have sex with that icon; meaning, those nerds are probably going to fap to that. The same is true of those attractive men who dress up in sexy costumes; they get fapped to by men and women as well; in fact, just as much if not more.

If you want to avoid this then there is a simple solution: don't cosplay in public.

I am a male and I will admit that men sexually objectify women; however, the way you present your point makes it seem that women don't sexually objectify men as well.

As a man who has been sexually objectified I can point to the fact that women (and men) sexually objectify men just as much as men sexually objectify women. It's in our fucking nature, an evolutionary trait.

I can understand your frustration with this, but please stop venting your anger about human nature specifically towards men. It's this kind of hate that changed feminism from the respectable suffragists who won women the vote, and equality in the west, to simple man-haters.

P.S. sexual attraction is dictated by genetics. If you have male physical genetics, but female mental traits, then you'll be attracted to men in very much the same way as a biological woman would. Additionally there are social conditions that influence sexuality but that's to a much lesser degree typically.

the issue is not that women objectify men just as much as men objectify women, it's that we live in a society where objectification of women is just a given, and seen as normal, and when you turn people into objects, you dehumanize them, and desensitize people from all kinds of violence, discrimination, and inequality, because it's seen as more acceptable when you disenfranchise a group of people and treat them as somewhat less than human. stuff as simple as ads that only show female body parts, or use female bodies to sell stuff are examples of women being portrayed as commodified things, as objects, not as people. that's where the issue lies. when women objectify men, it's not systematic, nor does it take away male agency or make men into objects only to sell things. it happens in limited contexts, but it's much less prevalent.

Objectification? I never quite understood that.

I look at it more as putting certain traits on a pedestal and making them more important than others.

Real objectification would requier you to disregard everything but 1 trait. And why would objectification be bad anyway? If you don't like that people just like 1 trait of yours or 2, then its up to you to be something more.

Thats why we have people exclaiming that they are nerds, or gamers, or whatever. Because they have nothing that they are good for, they have no real self identity, no skill or something others would look at and say "Hey thats pretty neat".

Why is all this conversation so offtopic, i tought this was about photography?

This is speaking from the pov of a female photog.
Male and female photogs generally have different aesthetics when it comes to photoshoots and see things from different angles; this isn't to say that all photogs of the same sex will end up with the same result, since everyone has their different take on things, but generally speaking. Male photographers usually do end up playing the sexy angle with the pictures more.

Idk it all depends on what you're going for. If you're looking for that sort of thing or are cosplaying a deliberately sexy character then you should pick a photog who is good at that, male or female. If you're going for a different style, pick a different photog. Look at their portfolio/website and see what their style's like. If you don't want to be ogled, ask not to be and ask for it disclosed on a release form (that you would have to sign anyway if the photographer is actually serious about their trade). If you're cosplaying a sexy character people are gonna assume you want that kind of attention and are going to check you out, sorry but it's just common sense.

Male photogs would have an easier time of things if it weren't for people like EBK. EBK set the standard for creepy. Some people try to be nice and say he's changed, but he hasn't. He's still a creepy old man that hits on girls half his age. I've never met a female photographer that creeped as hard as this dude. Or a male photographer, for that matter. That being said, female photographers do tend to be less experienced, but their photos are usually more flattering than a man's because they know how women want to look. But usually the composition's off or the lighting's bad or something.
For me, I don't care if people fap to my pictures as long as they don't write me letters telling me about it. Some of my costumes are sexy and some aren't. It's not like there's only-sexy cosplayers and never-sexy cosplayers.

Shooting pictures of mofels in the buff and making it not look like porn takes consideration and effort along with a little bit of trial and error.

Really though, it's no different than an artist caring more about getting the line of action and composition correct than they are how attractive said nude model happens to be when figure drawing.

Cute models are nice, but at the end of the day you're there to get work done. Fapping isn't a part of that creative process.

Artists are there for the beauty of the art itself, not how sexually attractive you think you are personally.

If it qualifies as sexual harassment DO something about it don't just claim it on an anonymous forum to gain the upper hand on a message board. Not saying it didn't happen, but Harassment is a purely subjective thing. What one person views as harassment is interpreted as flirting or banter by others.

One was a student photographer, went to Valencia. He was more aggravating than harassing, after he found out I shot nudes after we already discussed the details of a clothed shoot themed around a retro space outfit he asked if we could squeeze some nudes in. I agreed. Shoot day, we meet up, he asks if we can shoot the nudes first. I don't care, we start shooting. We're shooting nudes for awhile and he keeps on asking for various erotic poses. I do shoot erotic nudes so I do the open leg shots, he tries to direct me to touch myself. I say no, we take some more toned down shots. We go back and forth with me saying no, him backing down and me getting increasingly annoyed. I notice while I'm laying down that he appears turned on, plus when he'd be speaking to direct me his voice was becoming increasingly strained. I tell him that either we move along to what we originally agreed to shoot or I'd just leave. We spend about 15 minutes on what I really wanted to shoot. He calls me multiple times after it all and I ignore his calls after I pick up the photos, which he didn't edit. Still turned out nice, but I don't like how erotic nudes look and don't include them in my portfolio so I didn't have much to choose from. His references mostly said he was sorta shy and awkward, but otherwise okay.
Second guy, paid shoot. He has classical music playing when I get there, makes awkward small talk and we take care of paperwork. I don't remember what he said to me anymore, but it was awkward and uncomfortable, but not bad enough to make me leave and forfeit my money. Propositions me as I'm about to leave.
Third guy, by far the worst, also paid. Tried to get me to blow him. I said no. Tried to get me to have sex with him under the guise of offering me a porn contract and being able to make thousands of dollars, but oh, it's all amateur stuff with him as the male. Don't want to make this another post, too long, I stood up for myself when things got bad each time.

Fun fact... the pictures aren't for you. They are for public consumption. IE what sells. Nice pretty portraits are all fine and dandy but this isn't glamour shots. If you want photos for yourself, you pay a photographer. If the photographer pays you, they get the photos They want, and the ones they can sell.

still don't know who EBK is or a reputation. Pretty much the assumption of every paid model in the world. If you're talked into doing a shoot for some amateur for free who then sells the photos somehow, you're the one falling for a scam honey.

Except EBK didn't actually sell photos, or at least I wasn't aware that he did. Or am I that out of the loop? The thing about him though was that despite being a bit of a creeper with the more attractive girls, he'd get pictures of everyone. At least this was a few years ago. IDK about now. But that's not something you can say about a lot of people these days, especially the more creeper types who just take pictures of skinny girls in more revealing costumes.

I donno, I don't like paying for photographers. But maybe that's the old school in me where I'd get friends and rely on photographers like EBK to get my picture. Rather than pay someone for a service that's always been pretty much free in the past.

So you don't know who the guy is or the creepy shit he's done and you're backing him up....why?

I don't think he does. Anyway, EBK's ACP profile.

He had to take photos of every cosplayer back when he was the official photographer for Cosplay.com. When they booted him for inviting underage girls for "private shoots," he started uploading to ACP instead. He was really open about how excited he was that he didn't have to shoot with everybody and could just start shooting with attractive girls. He's also told people about his "private collection" and is known for asking girls half his age to date him.

EBK is not paid and does not pay his models. He doesn't sell the photos, either. So your assumptions are wrong on all counts.

The service isn't free, hell it isn't a service if you're not paying for it or directing how it's used or done. It is just some guy taking pictures of you and you want to use them for self promotion, fame, popularity, whatever your reasons might be. I still don't know who EBK is and what the controversy is with them.

If that controversy is that they are some behind the lens creeper kid who got a professional camera one day and started snapping pictures of girls he thought were cute/sexy at conventions. than yeah i'd expect nothing less than a voyeuristic sleazy kid.

Not backing anyone up. Pointing out that Photographers who aren't being paid aren't shooting for YOU they are shooting for themselves.

I'm guessing it stands for Euro beat king who has been around even 10 years ago. Still in his shitty Shinji ikari cosplay.

You're defending a guy in his 40's who asks teenage girls to go to the bathrooms to do photoshoots.

Fucking educate yourself before you go whiteknighting.

Ahh Eurobeat King, never met him. sounds terrible.

Again as I said before, perfect example of an unprofessional photographer using a minor skill and considerably expensive equipment to try seducing young women. I'm not assuming anything about the people involved though I was trying to point out that people are upset by the pictures being taken by people that they have no real control over.

People like that give anyone holding a camera a bad reputation.

Don't be naive then. I already admited that i did not know who Eurobeat King was. and just googleing EBK was not enough to pull up anything sufficient. I have personally dealt with this kind of creep and pedophile that chases underage skirts at anime conventions. It's not something I am in the habit of "sticking up for"

As a point of reality though it is very naive to think that someone holding a camera and taking pictures of young, attractive women in provocative clothing and not being paid for it are doing so for their own pleasure.

Ah okay thanks for clearing that up. I've been out of the broader cosplay scene for about five years or so and just attending more local conventions and not cosplaying as much. I do remember eye rolling at his avatars and profile pictures back in the day, but he was always pretty nice to me and others I knew (regardless of attractiveness or being female) but it probably was a facade. Didn't know about the underage girl thing though.
