I don't want to derail the thread, but I have always had a question: what are the basics of otome?

Like, what do you need to put together a good otome coord?

I think its a really cute style, but I have no idea how to get started with it (other than buy a ETC dress and just kinda make a casual lolita coord with it)

>> No.7138869

>>7138843
Nothing specific, otome is more about the "feel" and it's not rigit as lolita. Even pants work with it if it's cute enough.

What other anon said. Also, it helps to look at brands like MILK, Jane Marple, and ETC to get a feel for how they coordinate their items. I've noticed a few trends that can make an outfit. Things like quirky prints and girly motifs and details (think hearts, lace, bows, ruffles). Otome is not lolita without the petticoat though. Otome can be low key- think less accessories, more casual hairstyles with minimal hair accessories, and sometimes it's a different silhouette entirely. Colors can often be mismatching. Otome feels like a feminine, girly older sister. Common items I see coorded are dresses like you mentioned, skirts, pants/shorts if they have the right details, cardigans, cutsews, blouses (though usually not as structured as lolita), belts, hats, berets, socks, tights, and usually some kind of cute bag. A common look I've seen is wearing a puff sleeve top under a "JSK". A-line is a common cut of the dresses. Again, there are no rigid rules. The overall feeling just has to be cute.

To elaborate more on what this anon said, one of the main differences between otome and lolita is that otome is a bit simpler and more suitable for daily life. It has less frills, almost never no lace and the skirts aren't as big. Otome is more about quirky prints than lots of embellishments. The colours are more subdued, also. You will almost never see a crazy wig in otome unless it's for a Jane Marple photoshoot. Makeup is usually subtle, too.

Otome doesn't have that historically inspired feel to it that lolita has. Otome is a bit quirky and retro but it typically doesn't take inspiration from the 18/19th century like lolita does.

.. You have to be more specific. The dress in the pic has an A-line skirt but will look like ass without a proper A-line petti holding it up. Box pleated and some gathered skirts will look okay without a petti because the way they're constructed help keep the flared out shape.
The material they're constructed out of helps too.

If the skirt looks sad and deflated, no. But the bolero should work okay. Same with socks, lolita socks work with otome coords. I feel that it's generally that some lolita items can work in otome coords, but most of the time otome items don't work in a lolita coord. There are a few exceptions like MILK heart purses for example.

Not a stupid question, because it confused me in the beginning. Some people responded earlier in the thread about differences. But while they're similar, otome has characteristics that set it apart. Some people think putting together a lolita outfit sans petti is otome. It's overall a feeling. I learned to develop this feeling from looking at a lot of otome snaps and what the brands produced. As for some differences I noticed, sandals/open toed shoes are often worn. Socks are optional. Hair can be whatever, and for the most part, I rarely see wigs. Showing shoulders is cool. Color coordinating is not important and I've seen mismatched prints before. My best advice is just check out the brands and how they coord as well as others. You'll eventually learn the feel of it.

I'm not familiar enough with otome to suggest shops or to pick out items from a page, but I'd recommend searching things on mogujie.com, which is kind of like social shopping, taobao-style. search the terms for "pleated dress" or "(pattern/motif) dress/cardigan etc," and you'll get a variety of popular items that are trending with taobao users

you can just search on taobao, obviously, but I'm pretty sure some shops pay to appear on the first page of results when they might not be the actual top result, so.

What would you recommend to a former Lolita whose clothes have been sitting in the closet unworn for over a year, but wants to get back into a similar style like this?
I haven't worn it in so long that I feel silly in full Lolita. But I really miss feeling hyper feminine and girly with how I dress. I feel like I have no style anymore. It's just tshirt and jeans everyday :(
Most of what I have is angelic pretty and btssb jsk's, I don't think the blouses I have would carry over very well, and some ap, meta, and body line skirts. Lots of socks.

>> No.7143350

Some things I've noticed that sets otome apart from lolita and I really hope I got it right because I plan on shifting there successfully:

-different silhouette - minimal poof, not as emphasized waist, often empire cut
-different color pallette - sweet lolita mainly uses pastels or just one bold color in an outfit whilst otome mixes multiple bold colors
-not as matchy-matchy - pairing dots with stripes is welcome, mixing different printed items is okay, colors don't have to match and even can clash
-simpler dresses - cute but simple, with minimal lace, ruffles, bows
-prints - all-over and busy unlike lolita's love for border prints
-natural feel - no wigs, easy hairstyles, little makeup
-vintage elements - leather shoes, fur collars, chiffon blouses and such
-super girly - often used ankle socks, straw hats, peter pan collars but no 'sexy' elements like tall heels, corsets, cleavage
-less accessory heavy - little to no jewelery, if used it's rather delicate and natural, no requirement of head gear (bow, bonnett, headdress, crown)
-less strict - long and/or loose cardigans can be used, bare legs and shoulders are fine, petticoats optional, no 'essential basics' that make an outfit otome
-no 'outside' influence - doesn't mix in styles like decora, fairy-kei, creepycute, cult party kei, mori

And having wrote all that I really don't see how anyone can treat it as 'just toned down lolita'...

Eugh, typed up a reply but the browser ate it.

Blouses - get simpler yet girly ones with interesting collars.

Wear with cute cardigans or nice blazers/jackets.
Adorn these with brooches, or ribbons.

Make sure you have a hair accessory of some kind, nothing OTT like in lolita, but simple and feminine. A hat works nicely too.

Wear patterned tights, otk socks or frilly crew socks.

Use a a-line petti or none depending on the skirt/dress. You can even wear pants or shorts so long as they're feminine.

Shoes - no loli shoes, wear flats, oxfords, boots, etc.
